Meteoroid orbit determination from HPLA radar data

High-power large-aperture radars have revolutionized meteor science by allowing highly accurate position and velocity estimates to be made from meteor head echoes. This paper describes a new open-source software, MODA, for determining the heliocentric orbital parameters of these meteoroids. We compare MODA with other current methods, both analytical and numerical. We describe our modeling of third-body perturbations and atmospheric drag, as well as solar radiation pressure, which is not taken into account in other works. We verify MODA against results from the literature and use it to compute the orbits for two small particles observed by ALTAIR in 2008.

A Study on Meteor Head Echo Using a Probabilistic Detection Model at Jicamarca

AbstractA coded long pulse is applied to the Jicamarca 50 MHz high power large aperture radar to study meteor head echoes. We develop a probabilistic detection model, which finds 25% more meteors than the commonly used signal‐to‐noise threshold method. The long code and the probabilistic approach allow us to detect over 180 meteors per minute during the dawn hours, which is several times higher than reported previously. The typical mass of the meteoroids is estimated to be about 10−9 kg, slightly smaller than other sensitive very‐high‐frequency and ultrahigh‐frequency high power large aperture radars except the Arecibo radar. The high sensitivity allows us to observe numerous meteors in the presence of the strongest equatorial electrojet. We report and discuss the characteristics of meteor flux rate, ablation height, and velocity with a constant noise power for the first time for the Jicamarca radar. The highest average detection height is found to be near 2 a.m., instead of near 6 a.m. when the largest average velocity is observed. This is likely due to the combination of the relative large atmospheric velocity and the substantial atmospheric entry angles around 2 a.m. The observed characteristics suggest that many meteors are detected 8° off zenith despite that the full beam width is only 2.4°.

Evidence of Meteoroid Fragmentation in Specular Trail Echoes Observed Using Gadanki MST Radar

Meteoroids are responsible for deposition of thousands of kilograms of annual mass flux in the Earth’s upper atmosphere but the disintegration mechanisms of these bodies, and hence their composition, still remains a subject of debate in the meteor radar community. The role and significance of fragmentation as a meteoroid disintegration mechanism has been of particular interest in the past few years but in contrast to the head echoes, relatively little work has been done to study the effect and extent of fragmentation on trail echoes observed by the high power large aperture radars. Using the 53 MHz Gadanki MST radar, we present examples of radar meteor trails whose evolution cannot be explained with just the aid of classical meteor ablation theory. These examples are analyzed and discussed on a case-by-case basis and it is reported that the evolution of these trails can be explained with the help of fragmentation. This study will form the basis for future modeling efforts of fragmenting meteor trails and has important implications on the form in which the meteoroid mass is deposited in the upper atmosphere.

Interferometric meteor head echo observations using the Southern Argentina Agile Meteor Radar

A radar meteor echo is the radar scattering signature from the free electrons generated by the entry of extraterrestrial particles into the atmosphere. Three categories of scattering mechanisms exist: specular, nonspecular trails, and head echoes. Generally, there are two types of radars utilized to detect meteors. Traditional VHF all‐sky meteor radars primarily detect the specular trails, while high‐power, large‐aperture (HPLA) radars efficiently detect meteor head echoes and, in some cases, nonspecular trails. The fact that head echo measurements can be performed only with HPLA radars limits these studies in several ways. HPLA radars are sensitive instruments constraining the studies to the lower masses, and these observations cannot be performed continuously because they take place at national observatories with limited allocated observing time. These drawbacks can be addressed by developing head echo observing techniques with modified all‐sky meteor radars. Such systems would also permit simultaneous detection of all different scattering mechanisms using the same instrument, rather than requiring assorted different classes of radars, which can help clarify observed differences between the different methodologies. In this study, we demonstrate that such concurrent observations are now possible, enabled by the enhanced design of the Southern Argentina Agile Meteor Radar (SAAMER). The results presented here are derived from observations performed over a period of 12 days in August 2011 and include meteoroid dynamical parameter distributions, radiants, and estimated masses. Overall, the SAAMER's head echo detections appear to be produced by larger particles than those which have been studied thus far using this technique.

The Meteoroid Input Function and predictions of mid-latitude meteor observations by the MU radar

The majority of extraterrestrial particles entering Earth’s atmosphere originate from the Sporadic Meteoroid Complex (SMC) and are associated with many mesospheric layer phenomena. The Meteoroid Input Function (MIF) is a model that has been developed with the purpose of understanding the temporal and spatial variability of the meteoroid impact in the atmosphere. The MIF has been shown to accurately predict the seasonal and diurnal variations of the meteor flux observed by High Power Large Aperture (HPLA) radars at various geographic locations, including the Arecibo Observatory (AO) and the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR). For this, the model requires the assessment of a potential observational bias of the particular HPLA radar utilized: the minimum detectable radar cross-section (RCS). The RCS sensitivity threshold provides a metric to characterize the radar system’s ability to detect particles with a given mass and speed. In this paper, the MIF model was used to predict meteor properties (e.g. the distributions of areal density, speed, and radiant location) observed by the Middle and Upper atmosphere (MU) radar while leveraging the system’s interferometric capability to address the model’s ability to predict meteor observations at middle geographic latitudes and for a radar operating frequency in the low VHF band. This study demonstrates that the MIF accurately considered the speed and sporadic source distributions for the portion of the meteoroid population observable by the MU radar, and the applicability of the MIF to the MU system increases the confidence of using it as a global model.

Meteor studies applying incoherent scatter radar instruments

AbstractOne of the interesting aspects of optical meteor studies is that the spectral composition of the brightness reveals information about the element composition of the solid particles that enter Earthfs atmosphere from interplanetary space. Deriving composition from optical spectra requires understanding the entry process during which the entering solid interacts with atmospheric species. This is especially so, because most meteors are observed at altitudes where the mean free path changes from tens of meters to millimeters, that is in the 120 km to 80 km altitude range within the atmosphere. The ionization that causes optical emission also reflects radio waves, so that meteors are observed with different kinds of radar instruments. Incoherent scatter radar facilities are in particular designed to study the upper atmosphere by using the backscattering from free electrons and are basically High Power Large Aperture radars. During the past 15 years they have been increasingly used for meteor studies. The phased-array incoherent scatter radars that are currently under development, such as the planned EISCAT-3Dsystem in northern Scandinavia, will further improve the spatial and time resolution of radar observations and will allow simultaneous measurements of the meteors and of the parameters of the surrounding ionosphere. Radar backscattering is also sensitive to objects that are smaller than those detected optically, so that the observations also permit studying the extension of the meteoroid size distribution to smaller sizes. In this presentation we consider the possibilities for measurements with the future EISCAT-3D as a new path of studying the physics of meteor phenomena with high accuracy.

Meteor head echo polarization at 930 MHz studied with the EISCAT UHF HPLA radar

Abstract. The polarization characteristics of 930-MHz meteor head echoes have been studied for the first time, using data obtained in a series of radar measurements carried out with the tristatic EISCAT UHF high power, large aperture (HPLA) radar system in October 2009. An analysis of 44 tri-static head echo events shows that the polarization of the echo signal recorded by the Kiruna receiver often fluctuates strongly on time scales of tens of microseconds, illustrating that the scattering process is essentially stochastic. On longer timescales (> milliseconds), more than 90 % of the recorded events show an average polarization signature that is independent of meteor direction of arrival and echo strength and equal to that of an incoherent-scatter return from underdense plasma filling the tristatic observation volume. This shows that the head echo plasma targets scatter isotropically, which in turn implies that they are much smaller than the 33-cm wavelength and close to spherically symmetric, in very good agreement with results from a previous EISCAT UHF study of the head echo RCS/meteor angle-of-incidence relationship. Significant polarization is present in only three events with unique target trajectories. These all show a larger effective target cross section transverse to the trajectory than parallel to it. We propose that the observed polarization may be a signature of a transverse charge separation plasma resonance in the region immediately behind the meteor head, similar to the resonance effects previously discussed in connection with meteor trail echoes by Herlofson, Billam and Browne, Jones and Jones and others.

Polarization and scattering of a long-duration meteor trail

[1] High-power, large-aperture (HPLA) radars have been used over the past two decades to characterize the plasmas formed both around and behind meteoroids as they enter Earth's atmosphere. These plasmas, referred to as heads and trails, respectively, occur with relative frequency (peak head echo detection rate of ∼1/s) but are extremely diverse and have been difficult to define in a general sense. One particular type of plasma, referred to as the nonspecular trail, occurs when the meteoroid travels quasi-parallel to the radar beam with the radar beam lying quasi-perpendicular to the background magnetic field. Reflection is believed to occur from field-aligned irregularities (FAIs) that form after the trail becomes unstable. While FAI scattering pertains to the majority of nonspecular trails that are short in duration, a subset of these trails, referred to as long-duration trails, still remains open to interpretation. In this paper we present a case study analysis of a long-duration, nonspecular trail and its associated head echo detected with the Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) Long-Range Tracking and Identification Radar (ALTAIR), which is an HPLA radar. These data are unique in that they are high resolution (with monopulse angles), dual frequency, and, most importantly, dual polarized, which allows for unprecedented insight into the scattering process from both heads and trails. First, we determine the velocity and mass of the parent meteoroid, which is a particle weighing more than a milligram and is one of the largest meteoroids ever detected by ALTAIR. Second, we determine the peak plasma density and polarization of the head echo and characterize the unique, yet strong returns in the opposite polarization, which may be due to multiple scattering centers within the range gate. Finally, we examine the polarization properties of the trail and discuss the first conclusive evidence of polarization flipping along the trail striations, which we believe corresponds to sharp gradients at the edges of the trail related to turbulent mixing of a dusty plasma that is elongating along the magnetic field. We look into a new idea, namely, the notion that some nonspecular echoes might correspond to a high Schmidt number, dusty plasma, as is found in and above noctilucent clouds. Our results show how polarized return can aid in scattering diagnostics and that single polarization radars must be used with caution for determining head and trail plasma densities given that some of the return can occur in the “unexpected” channel.

Nonspecular meteor trail altitude distributions and durations observed by a 50 MHz high‐power radar

High‐power large‐aperture (HPLA) radars frequently observe nonspecular meteor trail echoes that result from plasma turbulence driven by the intense pressure gradients on the trail edges. This paper analyzes the altitude range, duration, and dependence on head echo strength of nonspecular trails using two large data sets from the 50 MHz HPLA radar at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory. Over 2100 trails were used to build altitude profiles that extend from 86 km to 120 km altitude, with 97% of events occurring between 90 km and 110 km. Longer‐duration trails tend to form at lower altitudes than shorter‐duration echoes. The peak of the altitude distribution of trails lasting at least 5 s can be up to 12 km lower than the peak of the distribution of trails shorter than 5 s. Further, the data show a clear power law relationship for the frequency of both head echo and nonspecular trail power. An improved knowledge of nonspecular trails will allow researchers to better understand meteor trail evolution and their use in monitoring lower thermospheric winds.

Meteor-head echo observations using an antenna compression approach with the 450 MHz Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar

In this work we present a novel use of the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR) to study meteor-head echoes with wide (W) beams. Until now, most of the meteor-head echo studies have been performed with High-Power Large-Aperture Radars (HPLARs) using very narrow (N) beams. At PFISR we have implemented an antenna compression approach using a defocusing scheme, similar to Chirp (linear frequency modulation) in pulse compression. The resulting effective beam is ∼ 3 times wider than the narrowest PFISR beam. Using the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as a proxy measurement of cross-section, from the combined W and N beam experiments, our main results are: (1) observed meteors in the W beam are approximately half the number of meteors observed in the N beam, (2) we detected 10 times more large cross-section (strong) meteors ( > 15 dB if they were measured by the N mainlobe) than using only the N beam, and (3) more than 15% of the total N meteors were observed in the N sidelobes, therefore being at least 20 dB stronger if they were observed in the N mainlobe. Our results are summarized in a corrected distribution of relative meteor cross-sections as if all of them were observed with the N mainlobe, namely correcting their SNR values depending on where in the beam they were detected (sidelobes or mainlobe). In addition, we show a qualitative meteor cross-section distribution that one can obtain combining W and N beams. The resulting distribution is incomplete, since the W beam is not sensitive enough to detect the very small (weak) meteors, but could provide new information about the large cross-section events.

Dependence of radar signal strength on frequency and aspect angle of nonspecular meteor trails

When a meteoroid penetrates Earth's atmosphere, it forms a high‐density ionized plasma column immersed in the ionosphere between approximately 70 and 140 km altitude. High‐power, large‐aperture (HPLA) radars detect nonspecular trails when VHF or UHF radio waves reflect off structures in a turbulent meteor trail. These trails persist from a few milliseconds to many minutes and the return from these trails is referred to as nonspecular trails or range‐spread trail echoes. In this paper, we present analysis of nonspecular trails detected with ALTAIR, which is an HPLA radar operating simultaneously at 160 MHz and 422 MHz on the Kwajalein Atoll. First, we investigate the aspect sensitivity of nonspecular trails and show that as the angle between the radar beam and the background magnetic field increases, the signal strength falls off 3 to 4 dB per degree at 160 MHz. For ALTAIR, this means that the aspect angle must be within approximately 12 degrees in order to detect nonspecular trails using the chosen waveforms. Second, we compare and contrast the meteoroids that form nonspecular trails and find that the meteoroid energy causes much of the variability in the nonspecular trail's signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) for a given aspect angle. In addition, we show two range‐resolved fragmentation events that also affect the SNR. Finally, we determine the dependence of SNR on wavelength using two wavelengths and show that the maximum nonspecular trail SNR scales as approximately λ6, with a variation that depends upon altitude.

First definitive observations of meteor shower particles using a high-power large-aperture radar

We present the first clear observations of meteor shower activity from meteor-head echoes detected by a high-power large-aperture radar (HPLAR). Such observations have been performed at the Jicamarca VHF radar using its interferometric capabilities allowing the discrimination of meteor shower echoes from the much more frequent sporadic meteors. Until now, HPLARs were unable to distinguish meteor shower from the much more common sporadic meteor ones. In this work we have been able to detect and characterize the η-Aquariids (ETA) as well as the Perseids (PER) showers. The shower activity is more conspicuous for the ETA than for the PER shower due to the more favorable geometry. Namely, PER meteors come from low elevation angles, experiencing more filtering due to the combined Earth–atmosphere–radar instrument. In both cases, there is an excellent agreement between the measured mean velocity of the shower echoes and their expected velocity, within a fraction of 1 km s −1. Besides the good agreement with expected visual results, HPLARs observe meteors with a variety of particles sizes and masses, not observed by any other technique. Taking into account the different viewing volumes, compare to optical observations Jicamarca observes more than 1000 times more ETA meteors. Our results indicate that Jicamarca and other HPLARs are able to detect the echoes from meteor showers, but without interferometric capabilities such populations are difficult to identify just from their velocity distributions, particularly if their velocity distributions are expected to be similar to the more dominant distributions of sporadic meteors.

Sporadic meteor sources as observed by the Jicamarca high-power large-aperture VHF radar

We present, for the first time, the main sources of sporadic meteors as inferred from meteor-head echoes obtained by a high-power large-aperture radar (HPLAR). Such results have been obtained at the Jicamarca HPLAR (11.95° S, 76.87° W, 1° dip angle). Observations are based on close to 170,000 meteors detected in less than 90 h spread over 14 days, between November 2001 and February 2006. Meteors with solar orbits are observed to come from basically six previously known sources, i.e., North and South Apex, Helion, Anti-Helion, and North and South Toroidal, representing ∼ 91 % of the observations. The other ∼ 9 % represents meteors with observed velocities greater than the Sun's escape velocity at 1 AU, most of them of extra-solar origin. Results are given before and after removing the Earth's velocity and the sources are modeled with two-dimensional Gaussian distributions. In general, our results are in very good agreement with previously known sources reported by Jones and Brown [Jones, J., Brown, P.G., 1993. Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 265, 524–532] using mainly specular meteor radar (SMR) data gathered over many years and different sites. However, we find slightly different locations and widths, that could be explained on the basis of different sensitivities of the two techniques and/or corrections needed to our results. For example, we find that the North and South Apex sources are well defined and composed each of them of two collocated Gaussian distributions, one almost isotropic with ∼10° width and the other very narrow in ecliptic longitude and wide in ecliptic latitude. This is the first time these narrow-width sources are reported. A careful quantitative analysis is needed to be able to compare the strengths of meteor sources as observed with different techniques. We also present speed and initial altitude distributions for selected sources. Using a simple angular sensitivity function of the combined Earth–atmosphere–radar instrument, and an altitude selection criteria, the resulting meteor sources are in better qualitative agreement with the results obtained with SMRs.

Meteor head echo radar data: Mass–velocity selection effects

High-power, large-aperture (HPLA) radars detect the plasma that forms in the vicinity of a meteoroid and moves approximately at its velocity; reflections from these plasmas are called head echoes. For over a decade, HPLA radars have been detecting head echoes with peak velocity distributions >50 km/s. These results have created some controversy within the field of meteor physics because previous data, including spacecraft impact cratering studies, optical and specular meteor data, indicate that the peak of the velocity distribution to a set limiting mass should be <20 km/s [Love, S.G., Brownlee, D.E., 1993. Science 262, 550–553]. Thus the question of whether HPLA radars are preferentially detecting high-velocity meteors arises. In this paper we attempt to address this question by examining both modeled and measured head echo data using the ALTAIR radar, collected during the Leonid 1998 and 1999 showers. These data comprise meteors originating primarily from the North Apex sporadic meteor source. First, we use our scattering theory to convert measured radar-cross-section (RCS) to electron line density and mass, as well as to convert modeled electron line density and mass to RCS. We subsequently compare the dependence between mass, velocity, mean-free-path, RCS and line density using both the measured and modeled data by performing a multiple, linear regression fit. We find a strong correlation between derived mass and velocity and show that line density is approximately proportional to mass times velocity3.1. Next, we determine the cumulative mass index using subsets of our data and use this mass index, along with the results of our regression fit, to weight the velocity distribution. Our results show that while there does indeed exist a bias in the measured head echo velocity distribution, it is smaller than those calculated using traditional specular trail data due to the different scattering mechanism, and also includes a bias against the low-mass, very high-velocity meteoroids.

The hyperthermal ionization and high absolutemeteor velocities observed with HPLA radars

High Power Large Aperture (HPLA) radars generally observe very high meteor velocities averaging over 50 km s−1. There are only a few events recorded around 30 km s−1, while meteors at 20 km s−1 or slower are very rare. This is a clear and debated contradiction to specular meteor radar results. A high plasma density condition contributes, but the dominating phenomenon is the hyperthermal ionization mechanism due to chemical dynamics of the ionization process. The observed high velocities can be explained in terms of high hyperthermal ionization cross-sections for collisions between ablated meteoroid metal atoms such as Na and/or Fe and atmospheric species.
