The Ontology of Digital Transformation in the Perspective of Resource-Based Theory

Digital transformation research lacks theoretical coherence while practitioners experience high failure rates, questioning the field's knowledge completeness. Given digital transformation's nature as a resource-driven process, this study assesses whether decade-long research has addressed all essential elements defined by resource-based theory. We constructed a conceptual blueprint incorporating resource-based theory's core principles, drawn from theoretical critiques, empirical validations, and extensions, to evaluate research comprehensiveness. Using systematic literature review and keyword analysis across 46 studies (2012-2024), we mapped digital transformation scholarship against our blueprint. Results show substantial coverage of environmental contexts and resource domains, yet reveal a critical gap in digital resource orchestration. Examination of 42 empirical studies confirms zero attention to orchestration concepts, highlighting knowledge deficiencies that may explain transformation failures. To address this limitation, we introduce a digital resources orchestration framework integrating resource-based and dynamic capabilities theories across two dimensions: content (aligning digital assets with transformation phase requirements) and mechanism (adaptive coordination via multi-organizational layers). This framework offers a holistic resource-based perspective on digital transformation, providing structured ontological mapping to direct future research toward resolving fundamental challenges and improving transformation outcomes.

This paper examines the role of human resources in supply chain management practices in fostering organizational resilience and transformative resilience within logistics firms, with a focus on the moderating effect of artificial intelligence technology readiness. Drawing on dynamic capabilities theory and supply chain resilience frameworks, the study proposes a model in which cross-training, managerial support, and flexible shift design act as key enablers of resilience. Using a cross-sectional survey, data were collected from 280 employees across various logistics companies in China to explore the relationships among human resources in supply chain management practices, organizational resilience, and transformative resilience. This study contributes to the growing body of transformative supply chain research by examining the connections between workforce adaptability, digital readiness, and resilience outcomes. The results suggest that organizational resilience, supported by robust human resource practices and artificial intelligence integration, is essential for sustaining long-term resilience and competitive advantage amid global disruptions.

This study explores the role of digital technology on the relationship between strategic orientation and international trade performance, focusing on construction enterprises in Guangdong Province under the WTO framework. While market orientation, innovation orientation, and learning orientation are key drivers of trade success, digital transformation significantly enhances their impact by streamlining operations, improving regulatory compliance, and optimizing supply chains. However, slow adoption of digital tools due to financial constraints, cybersecurity concerns, and inconsistent WTO digital trade policies pose challenges for construction firms. The research utilizes a Systematic Literature Review following PRISMA to integrate findings from twenty peer-reviewed investigations regarding digital transformation along with strategic orientation in the construction trade. This study integrates the theoretical underpinning of the resource-based View (RBV) and Dynamic Capabilities Theory (DCT) to explain how digital resources serve as strategic assets and dynamic enablers of trade performance. The systematic literature findings suggest that harmonized digital trade regulations and industry-wide digital adoption initiatives are necessary to improve global competitiveness. Future research should explore longitudinal studies and sector-specific digital policy frameworks to enhance the technological adaptability of construction enterprises in international trade.

Enhancing Telecommunication Infrastructure Performance Through Dynamic Capabilities: The Mediating Roles of GRC Implementation and Artificial Intelegent Adoption

The telecommunications infrastructure sector faces unprecedented challenges in balancing operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and digital transformation amid capital-intensive investments exceeding USD 428 billion globally in 2023. This study investigates how telecommunication infrastructure organizations can enhance their performance through dynamic capabilities, examining the mediating roles of Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) implementation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption. Drawing on Dynamic Capabilities Theory (Teece et al., 1997) and the Resource-Based View (Barney, 1991), this research develops and tests an integrated framework using data from 87 telecommunication infrastructure organizations across 23 countries spanning 2019–2023. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the relationships between dynamic capabilities, GRC implementation, AI adoption, and organizational performance using secondary data from annual reports, industry databases (ITU, GSMA Intelligence), and regulatory filings. The results reveal that dynamic capabilities significantly influence organizational performance both directly ( , ) and indirectly through GRC implementation ( , ) and AI adoption ( , ). GRC implementation and AI adoption exhibit complementary mediating effects, together explaining 68.3% of the variance in organizational performance ( ). The findings provide strategic guidance for telecommunication infrastructure managers to systematically develop sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring capabilities while concurrently strengthening governance frameworks and accelerating AI-enabled transformation. This research integrates dynamic capabilities theory with GRC and AI adoption frameworks, explicating mechanisms through which capabilities translate into superior performance in infrastructure-intensive sectors.

ABSTRACT This study investigates how artificial intelligence (AI) drives green innovation (GI) in the Turkish construction sector by examining the strategic roles of organizational agility (OA) and technological readiness (TR). Grounded in Dynamic Capabilities Theory (DCT), the research explores how AI enhances sustainability performance through adaptive organizational processes and reconfigurable resources. A quantitative design employing Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze survey data collected from 302 managerial-level professionals across construction organizations. Results reveal that AI significantly influences both GI and OA, while OA not only contributes directly to GI but also mediates the AI–GI relationship. Furthermore, TR moderates these relationships, amplifying the positive effects of AI on agility and of agility on green innovation. This suggests that firms with higher technological readiness are better positioned to convert AI-driven insights into sustainable outcomes. By integrating AI into decision-making, resource optimization, and predictive analytics, construction firms can enhance their dynamic capabilities and improve sustainability performance. The study extends DCT by clarifying how AI-enabled agility operates as a pathway for sustainable transformation in emerging markets and offers actionable insights for engineering managers seeking to foster innovation, digital resilience, and environmental responsibility in an increasingly technology-driven industry.

The Impact of Green and Product Innovations on Competitive Advantage: A Case Study of Medium and Small-Scale Distilleries in Thailand

This study investigates the interrelationships among green innovation, product innovation, competitive advantage, and business survival in Thailand’s small and medium-sized distillery sector. Drawing on the Resource-Based View and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the research explores how environmentally sustainable practices serve as a strategic foundation for product differentiation and long-term viability in a heavily regulated market. The study employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze survey data collected from SME distilleries across Thailand. The findings confirm that green innovation has a strong positive effect on product innovation, which in turn significantly influences competitive advantage and SME survival. Product innovation also independently impacts survival outcomes, highlighting its dual strategic role. Competitive advantage is shown to be a critical mediator linking innovative efforts to long-term business resilience. These results underscore the need for SMEs to embed sustainability and innovation into core strategies while also highlighting the importance of regulatory reform to support local entrepreneurial ecosystems. The study contributes to the literature on SME innovation in emerging economies and offers practical recommendations for policymakers, including easing production quotas and investing in green technology support systems. The findings suggest that fostering a policy environment conducive to small-scale innovation can enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of Thailand’s craft distillery industry.

This study investigates the role of dynamic capabilities as a mediating mechanism that bridges SEO, social media marketing, and Personalization with economic performance. Grounded in the Dynamic Capability Theory and Resource-Based View (RBV), this research aims to understand how digital marketing practices contribute to firm performance in a dynamic business environment. Using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), the findings reveal that SEO and social media marketing have a positive and significant impact on dynamic capabilities. At the same time, Personalization does not show a significant effect. Furthermore, dynamic capabilities have a positive and significant influence on economic performance, confirming their strategic importance. Mediation analysis indicates that dynamic capabilities significantly mediate the relationship between SEO and economic performance, as well as between social media marketing and economic performance, but not between Personalization and economic performance. These results highlight that a firm's ability to adapt, integrate, and reconfigure its digital resources is essential to achieving superior economic outcomes. The study contributes to the ongoing discourse on digital transformation and strategic marketing by emphasizing dynamic capabilities as the key mechanism linking digital marketing strategies to economic success.

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between digital culture, the digital transformation of the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT), and digital leadership, knowledge management, and organisational agility. In order to determine the nature of the relationships between the variables, this quantitative study used descriptive statistics and SEM-PLS analysis. We used dynamic capability theory to analyse data gathered from a survey of 450 DGT employees that were selected using cluster sampling techniques. Knowledge management only significantly affected organisational agility, whereas digital leadership significantly impacted both organisational agility and DGT's digital transformation. The connection between digital leadership and knowledge management on digital transformation was enhanced through organisational agility, which operated as a mediator. Meanwhile, digital culture did not act as a moderating variable, but rather as a supporting element that increased the effectiveness of digital leadership, knowledge management, and organizational agility. These findings confirm that DGT's digital transformation is determined by the organization's core capabilities, while digital culture functions as an enabler that facilitates the creation of these capabilities.

This study examines organizational adaptation strategies in digital transformation within manufacturing firms through a qualitative interpretative library research design grounded in a critical constructivist epistemology. Drawing on systematically selected and thematically synthesized scholarly literature, the analysis integrates operational, structural, leadership, and human resource perspectives to explain how organizations respond to digital disruption. The findings demonstrate that successful digital transformation depends on the coherence between adaptive operational practices, flexible organizational structures, digitally oriented leadership, and continuous workforce capability development. Fragmented or technocentric approaches are shown to generate limited performance gains and organizational resistance. The study further highlights the relevance of dynamic capability theory in explaining how sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring processes enable sustainable adaptation. By synthesizing diverse empirical and conceptual contributions, this article advances an integrative framework that clarifies the mechanisms linking digital transformation and organizational performance in manufacturing contexts. Methodologically, the study contributes by offering a transparent and replicable approach to theory-driven literature synthesis.

Green intellectual capital and organizational learning: pathways to sustainable innovation and firm performance in Pakistani SMEs

Purpose This study investigates the impact of green intellectual capital (GIC) on green innovation (GI) and firm performance (FP) in Pakistani manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The study aims to analyze the mediating role of organizational learning capability (OLC) between GIC and GI and evaluate the direct and indirect effects of GIC and GI on FP. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research approach was employed, using partial least squares structural equation modeling to test the proposed relationships. The data were collected from 452 executives across Pakistani manufacturing SMEs in sectors including textile and apparel, food processing, and chemical manufacturing. A structured, self-administered survey was conducted over a three-month period (February to April 2025). Findings The results demonstrate that GIC significantly influences GI and FP, with OLC mediating the relationship between GIC and GI. GI also positively impacts FP, both directly and indirectly through GIC and OLC. Practical implications This study contributes to the resource-based and dynamic capabilities literature by highlighting the role of intangible green resources in driving sustainable innovation and enhancing firm performance. For SMEs, investing in intangible green assets and integrating organizational learning capabilities are crucial for fostering innovation and achieving sustainability. Policymakers and business leaders can leverage these insights to support green innovation and promote long-term sustainable growth. Originality/value This study expands on the RBT and dynamic capabilities theory by examining the role of GIC and OLC in driving GI and sustainable firm performance within Pakistani SMEs, offering a unique contribution to the literature on sustainability in emerging economies.

How Artificial Intelligence Application Bolsters Organizational Resilience of Chinese Listed Firms

ABSTRACT In the current era of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), enhancing organizational resilience represents a critical global economic priority. Artificial intelligence (AI), a crucial factor in fostering resilience, has often been neglected in previous studies. Utilizing dynamic capability theory and analyzing China’s listed enterprises from 2010 to 2023, we ascertain that the adoption of AI enhances organizational resilience. These findings withstand robustness tests. Elevated industry competition, environmental uncertainty, and efficient resource allocation amplify AI’s positive effect on resilience; conversely, managerial short-termism attenuates this relationship. Furthermore, we treat the 2018 U.S. tariff list imposed on China as an exogenous shock to U.S.-China trade friction. Enterprises located in AI innovation pilot zones were designated as the treatment group, whereas others constituted the control group. A DID model was constructed to examine how trade friction affects corporate resilience. The results passed parallel trend tests. Our findings demonstrate that firms with superior AI application proficiency possess enhanced crisis response capabilities. This evidence substantiates AI’s pivotal role in resilience and provides new implications for leveraging technological transformation to navigate challenges.

ABSTRACT The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping healthcare by improving diagnostics, patient outcomes, and operational efficiency. Yet, many frameworks for AI adoption overlook the complex and iterative nature of healthcare systems. This study introduces the AI Healthcare Symbiosis Cycle (AI-HSC), a novel framework based on Dynamic Capabilities Theory, Systems Theory, and Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model, conceptualising AI adoption as a continuous and adaptive process. Dynamic Capabilities Theory highlights the need for organisations to sense opportunities, seize resources, and change processes in response to AI advancements. Systems Theory focuses on optimising interdependencies within healthcare organisations, while Kotter’s model ensures a structured approach to managing change. The AI-HSC aligns phases of AI integration – initiation, integration, evolution, and revolution – with Kotter’s steps, promoting a systematic and scalable adoption strategy. Key recommendations include implementing pilot programs, fostering interdisciplinary coalitions, embedding AI literacy into organisational culture, and developing robust ethics and compliance frameworks. By bridging theory with practice, the AI-HSC provides actionable strategies for sustainable AI integration, addressing critical barriers and fostering continuous innovation. This research contributes to the digital change discourse, offering valuable insights for academia and healthcare practitioners.

Open innovation and export performance in SMEs

Purpose This study aims to investigate how open innovation contributes to export performance in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating amid volatile institutional and trade environments. While openness is often viewed as a pathway to external knowledge, its effectiveness under fragmented and unpredictable global conditions remains underexplored. We reframe open innovation as a capability–governance hybrid and examine how it enables firms to adapt and thrive internationally through internal strategic mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach Anchored in dynamic capabilities theory and a paradox perspective, we develop and test a multi-stage model linking open innovation to export performance through two mediators: market agility and business model innovation. A structured survey was conducted with 162 exporting SMEs. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was employed to examine the hypothesized relationships and mediation pathways. Findings Our findings reveal that open innovation improves export performance by fostering strategic agility and enabling business model reconfiguration. These mechanisms operate both independently and sequentially. The benefits of openness are strongest when firms simultaneously enhance their responsiveness and transform their value creation systems. The model confirms that strategic orchestration of openness is especially valuable in volatile institutional environments. Originality/value This study reconceptualizes open innovation as an internally governed capability system rather than a purely external knowledge process. It contributes to the literature by identifying dual pathways – agility and business model innovation – through which openness leads to superior export outcomes in SMEs. The findings offer practical insights for firms navigating uncertainty and theoretical implications for understanding innovation in volatile institutional settings.

ABSTRACT This study examines the ideals of idea creation and concept development in couples’ relationships and family business sustainability. Guided by dynamic capability theory and commitment–trust theory, this study explores how couple relationships mediate idea creation, concept development, and family business sustainability. Using a survey, this study adopted a quantitative approach and collected data from 259 couples who owned family businesses in Greater Accra. SmartPLS 4 was used to formulate the model. The results revealed that couples’ relationships significantly affected concept development, idea generation, and family business sustainability. This study recommends that couples or family businesses invest in idea creation and concept development together, as this helps build trust and sustain their family businesses. This study’s conceptualization of the Couprenuership Model raises our understanding of idea creation, concept development, family businesses, and couples’ relationships.

Examining the nice-to-have and must-have digital and sustainable-oriented capabilities for sustainable end-of-life management in manufacturing firms

Purpose Manufacturing firms are increasingly under pressure to manage products responsibly at their end-of-life stage, which requires stronger digital-, intelligence- and sustainability-oriented capabilities. However, limited empirical research clarifies which of these capabilities are essential (must-have) and which enhance performance only at higher levels (nice-to-have). Drawing on dynamic capability theory, knowledge-based view and stimulus–organism–response theory, this study examined how digital transformation (DT) and supply chain intelligence (SCI) enhance sustainable end-of-life management (SELM). The study also examined the mediating role of SCI and the moderating role of sustainable product design and development (SPDD). Design/methodology/approach The proposed model was validated using survey data from 309 managers purposively selected from manufacturing firms in Ghana. Structural equation modelling (SEM) using partial least squares software and necessary condition analysis (NCA) were employed to analyze the data. Findings The findings demonstrate that DT directly enhances SELM and indirectly influences it through the integration of SCI. It was further found that the effectiveness of intelligence integration is strengthened by SPDD, particularly for customer and supplier intelligence. NCA results further reveal that DT and SPD represent foundational necessary conditions for SELM, whereas SCI integration remains desirable until higher SELM levels are achieved. Originality/value This study is among the first to offer empirical evidence (via SEM and NCA) of the nice-to-have and must-have antecedents of SELM among manufacturing firms in Ghana. The findings offer practical guidance by highlighting that firms seeking high levels of SELM must invest deeply in DT, SCI capabilities and SPD, particularly DT and SPD at advanced performance levels.

Pathways to Sustainability in SMEs : The Role of Green Behavioral Intention and Technology Adoption

ABSTRACT Climate change, resource scarcity, and rising societal expectations have made sustainability a strategic imperative for firms worldwide. To address these global challenges, organizations are increasingly embedding environmental principles into their operations and adopting green technologies as a pathway to balance economic growth with ecological responsibility. This study examines the factors influencing green technology adoption among small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries, focusing on Türkiye, and explores how such adoption contributes to economic, social, and environmental sustainability performance. Guided by the TOE framework, dynamic capabilities theory, and institutional theory, survey data from 368 SME owners and managers were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS‐SEM). The findings show that green technology adoption significantly enhances sustainability outcomes. This study contributes to the limited literature on SME‐focused green technology adoption. It contributes original empirical evidence from an emerging economy and highlights the mediating roles of green behavioral intention and green technology adoption. Practically, the study implies that managers should view green technology not merely as compliance but as a strategic tool for resilience. By demonstrating how adoption drives multi‐dimensional performance, the findings valorize the role of SMEs as foundational pillars in building sustainable communities, suggesting that policymakers must foster mimetic ecosystems where green success stories can be easily replicated.

Drawing on Dynamic Capabilities Theory (Teece, 2016), the Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989), and the Sustainable Marketing Framework (Belz & Peattie, 2012), this study develops and empirically tests a comprehensive model linking AI adoption, Big Data analytics capability, and sustainability orientation to marketing agility, innovation performance, and competitive advantage. Data were collected from 412 senior marketing executives in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, representing the FMCG, retail, technology, hospitality, and manufacturing sectors. Using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS), results indicate that AI adoption, Big Data analytics capability, and sustainability orientation each significantly enhance marketing agility and innovation performance, which in turn strongly predict competitive advantage (R² = 0.68). All seven hypotheses were supported, confirming the robustness of the model. The findings contribute theoretically by integrating technological and sustainability perspectives within a strategic marketing framework for emerging markets, and offer actionable insights for managers in SEA seeking to leverage digital transformation for sustained market leadership.

Will AI Replace Us? Changing the University Teacher Role

This study examines how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the role of university teachers and transforming the foundations of academic work in the digital age. Building on the Dynamic Capabilities Theory (sensing–seizing–transforming), the article proposes a theoretical reframing of university teachers’ perceptions of AI. This approach allows us to bridge micro-level emotions with meso-level HR policies and macro-level sustainability goals (SDGs 4, 8, and 9). The empirical foundation includes a survey of 453 Ukrainian university teachers (2023–2025) and statistics, supplemented by a bibliometric analysis of 26,425 Scopus-indexed documents. The results indicate that teachers do not anticipate a large-scale replacement by AI within the next five years. However, their fear of losing control over AI technologies is stronger than the fear of job displacement. This divergence, interpreted through the lens of dynamic capabilities, reveals weak sensing signals regarding professional replacement but stronger signals requiring managerial seizing and institutional transformation. The bibliometric analysis further demonstrates a theoretical evolution of the university teacher’s role: from a technological adopter (2021–2022) to a mediator of ethics and integrity (2023–2024), and, finally, to a designer and architect of AI-enhanced learning environments (2025). The study contributes to theory by extending the application of Dynamic Capabilities Theory to higher education governance and by demonstrating that teachers’ perceptions of AI serve as indicators of institutional resilience. Based on Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the managerial recommendations are divided into three levels: government, institutional, and scientific-didactic (academic).

Dynamic Capabilities and Signal Transmission: Research on the Dual Path of Water Utilization Reduction Impacting Firm Value

Driven by the national policy of total water resources control and efficiency improvement, the behavior of water resource utilization reduction by firms is widespread, which may have an impact on the value of firms. This study integrates dynamic capability theory and signaling theory to construct a dual-path analytical framework, systematically investigating the impact of water utilization reduction on firm value and its intrinsic mechanisms. Based on data from Chinese A-share listed companies spanning 2012–2023, fixed-effect models, mediation-effect tests, and heterogeneity analysis are employed for empirical verification. The results reveal that water utilization reduction exerts a significant dual-path promoting effect on firm value: it enhances financial performance (ROA) primarily through technological innovation, reflecting the process of resource orchestration and dynamic capability construction; concurrently, it boosts market performance (Tobin’s Q) mainly by improving ESG performance as a signaling channel, mirroring the capital market’s positive pricing of green signals. Further heterogeneity analysis indicates that these effects are more pronounced during the policy deepening stage, in non-water-intensive industries, and in humid/sub-humid regions. This study contributes theoretical support and empirical evidence for firms’ green transformation and the formulation of differentiated water resource policies by the government, highlighting the synergistic development of high-quality economic growth and ecological civilization construction.

Determinants of digital integration and indigenous language adoption in SMME management: A case of KwaZulu-Natal Province

This study examines the integration of digitalization, mobile applications, and vernacular languages in Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMME) management within KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. A quantitative descriptive analysis was conducted using systematic probability sampling of 147 SMMEs across five sectors (agriculture, hospitality, construction, healthcare, and transportation) in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands region. Findings reveal significant gaps between policy support and the actual implementation of digital-vernacular language integration, with 45% of respondents indicating inadequate policy support and 58.9% expressing dissatisfaction with the current progress of digitalization. Results suggest the need for targeted policy interventions to support the digital transformation of SMMEs that incorporate indigenous language capabilities. The study contributes to understanding the intersection of digital transformation and linguistic diversity in emerging economy entrepreneurship management, and the dynamic capabilities theory was undertaken as the benchmark to support the literature. The findings revealed a disconnect between the provision of support from policymakers and authorities regarding the program of action and deliverables that could help SMMEs integrate their entrepreneurial management with the demands of digitalisation, including resources and capabilities. The findings further exposed the gap between the expectations of SMMEs and the current level of digital and vernacular language integration in terms of systematic support and deliverables. Additionally, the findings characterized the slow pace of transformation supported by policymakers in digitalization, mobile applications, and the adoption of vernacular languages, which is already at an advanced stage in similar emerging economies in the global South.
