The Dutch embraced in the 1920s the idea that they could improve society by forcing antisocial families in so-called housing schools. Slums were cleared under the pre-text of urban renewal, and vulnerable families were put under supervision in special projects that became known as “Woonschool”. This government interference into the lives of citizens resulted after WWII into the deportation of two thousand people from the larger Dutch cities to remote provinces to be trained in becoming decent citizens, starting with the forced removal of victims of the German bombardment of Rotterdam. Shifting opinions on what deviant social behaviour is and what the role of the government should be in society gradually eroded the support for housing school practices in the late 1950s, early 1960s. The fact that the approach hasn’t been successful did help. However, a new generation of populist politicians was able to breathe new life into this old concept: smaller in scale than previously and now marketed under the Danish name “Skaeve Huse”. Once more, cities test the boundaries how far the government can go with intervening in the lives of individuals for the benefit for society.

The author considers the art of a little-known Russian architect (including his own archival and field research) who worked more than 25 years in Qingdao and who created a huge number of projects and buildings. As a result of the survey of buildings in Qingdao, the author identified more than a dozen buildings designed by V.G. Yuryev, including those preserved up to the present time, such as his own house, the building of the oceanarium, the castle of the newspaper magnate M. Lembich, the Church of St. Paul and other works of the architect. Typological, compositional and stylistic features of the identified buildings are considered in the article.

The book describes the life and creative activity of Iosif Yulievich Karakis, one of the talented Ukrainian architects of the Soviet period, who designed many buildings, which later became outstanding historic landmarks of architecture of the Soviet period. Iosif Yulievich is featured as a talented teacher, expert in architecture, who had not only deep and stable professional principles, which he did not renounce even in the times of strong ideological pressure, but also human principles, which caused him to make decisions according to his conscience, but not “the demands of the moment”. These principles often had a crucial effect on his destiny.

Метаморфозы общественной жизни в ХХ веке на территории СССР происходили так стремительно, что была прервана «связь времен», которую поддерживала архитектура площадей. Имперские площади советского периода в России, образовавшиеся на месте площадей, где стояли кафедральные соборы, утратили свое прежнее предназначение и не обрели новой жизни. Попытка искусственно их оживить не имеет успеха в силу многих причин: гигантский масштаб, перегруженность транспортом, отсутствие мест притяжения, новые здания, не соответствующая характеру прежней застройки и композиции. Установка качелей-каруселей-скамеек не спасает, а лишь подчеркивает неорганичность такого дизайна. Площади в новых жилых массивах не проектируются. Их заменяют торгово-развлекательные комплексы, напоминающие гигантские сараи.

Итальянский триптих Леонида Салмина погружает нас в интерьер городов юга Италии, где пространства тесны и обжиты горожанами давно и полностью, а над выставленными на тротуар или даже на проезжую часть креслами и столиками реют флаги приватности – простыни и пододеяльники (114). После жаркой Сицилии и Неаполя переносимся в сказку туманного Лондона и вместе с Ольгой Смирновой, известной прекрасной сказочницей (120), побываем на файв-о-клоке в Челси у миллионерши. И сразу следом – большой материал Георги Станишева о Руди Риччиотти, архитекторе, в работах которого интерьер города плавно и незаметно перетекает в интерьер здания, а мосты соединяют фрагменты города, как межкомнатные двери.

Размышляя о чувстве интерьерности городской среды, мы неизбежно обращаемся к опытам переживания пространства, в которых взаимодействие человека и города выстраивается как эмоциональное со-бытие. Человек пребывает внутри, в центре особого энергетического поля, архетипически проживаемого как ДОМ. Тело человека и тело города образуют тесное единство, глубинные смыслы которого неизбежно проявляются в повседневных практиках городской жизни.

Обсуждаются вопросы идентичности Иркутска. Отмечаются те процессы, которые могут способствовать ее формированию. Анализируются узловые проблемы, связанные с «иркутскостью», деревянной архитектурой, разработкой и реализацией новых проектов, затрагивающих исторический центр Иркутска.

If we look closer at the biographies of the professionals of the first half of the 20th century, we can see how conventional and inconsistent the simplified scheme of the history of the national architecture of the 20th century is. The traditions of classicism preserved until the middle of the 1950s by old experts, graduates of the Imperial Academy of Arts and the Institute of Civil Engineers, have been lost. Professionalism has been lost together with the traditions. The logical consequence is ruin and chaos in the city environment.
