The literature review concerning (PGs) prostaglandins and their importance in obstetrics is given. Their structure and incidence, metabolism, and synthesis are outlined. Special attention is paid to their function and meaning in gynecology and obstetrics. Seemingly these substances play an important role in fertility and sterility and perhaps also in the origin of some menorrhagias. At the present time they are most successfully employed for inducing abortiosn and for deliveries when indicated. The author gives an analysis of different means of PG application (intravenous injections and drop infusions, intramuscular, intraamnially vaginal and oral applciation) and their dosage. The mechanism of the effect of PGs is also mentioned. (Author's modified)

(PGs) Prostglandins with the pharmacological and biological effects are intervening in a number of physiological processes of the reproductive cycle. They influence the motility of myometrium during the menstrual cycle, and through the relaxation of myometrium, they permit the migration of sperm cells and thus allow for fertilization. PGs act as etiologic factors in primary dysmenorrhea. Their effect on oviducts is not yet quite clear. Of considerable importance is their function in steroidogenesis of the ovary, mainly in luteolysis. Their contraceptive effect is considered as well. The clinical use of PGs in obsterical practice proves their significance in obstetrical dynamics. (Author's modified)
