Homoeopathic Management of Menopause: A Comprehensive Review

Background: Menopause signifies a crucial physiological shift in a woman's journey, denoting the halt of menstrual cycles caused by the gradual decline in ovarian activity. Conventional management options, such as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), are effective but not devoid of risks and limitations. In contrast, homeopathy offers a holistic approach to symptom management, aiming to address the underlying cause of menopausal disturbances. Aim and Objective: By critically analyzing clinical studies, randomized controlled trials, and observational research, this paper seeks to elucidate the role of homeopathy as an alternative and complementary therapy for menopause. The objective is to provide insights into the potential benefits of homeopathy and contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting its use in menopausal care. Methodology: A comprehensive search strategy was done to identify relevant literatures from databases such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar. The selection of eligible studies was conducted according to predefined criteria for inclusion and exclusion. Results: Our findings resulted into nine studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria, including randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and clinical trials. These studies collectively provided evidence of the efficacy of homeopathic medicines in managing various menopausal symptoms, including hot flushes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. Conclusion: The reviewed literature suggests that homeopathy offers a promising avenue for managing menopausal symptoms, providing an alternative or complimentary approach to conventional therapies. Individualized treatment strategies tailored to each woman's unique symptomatology appear particularly beneficial. However, further clinical trials are needed to fully elucidate the efficacy and mechanisms of action of homeopathic interventions in menopausal care.

Assessment of the level of patient satisfaction in Homoeopathy using 12 Item Japanese Short-form Satisfaction Questionnaire: A cross-sectional study

To strengthen the health care services, it is important to know the patients’ satisfaction about the quality of health care they are getting exposed to, in different modes of treatment. There are a few studies on the topic but are mostly related to modern medicine. It is desirable to make such efforts in other systems of medicine in view of recent emphasis of the Govt of India for the use of AYUSH. The present paper aims to present findings of a pilot study examining the usefulness of 12-item Japanese short-term self-administered questionnaire and the level of patient satisfaction following homoeopathic healthcare encounters. The pilot study was conducted in the OPD (out-patient department) of Bakson Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Greater Noida (BHMC&H) to understand and estimate patients’ satisfaction related to health care service. The study was cross-sectional of 81 newly enrolled patients in the Hospital’s OPDs by using a bilingual 12-Item Japanese short form self-administered consultation questionnaire. The questionnaire appeared to be reliable and valid. The internal consistency scores of Cronbach’s Alpha range between 0.62 – 0.93. Most of the patients have given positive feedback against all the dimensions/ subscales related to patient’s care. It is recommended to conduct further longitudinal surveys with greater sample size in an AYUSH health care set up as being emphasized by the present national programme effort.

Add-on homeopathic treatment to institutional management protocol in children suffering from acute encephalitis syndrome: A retrospective comparative cohort study

Background and objectives: Acute encephalitis syndrome is a health burden to a populous country like India. It is characterized by a sudden onset of fever, altered sensorium with or without seizures, irritability, abnormal behaviour, or unconsciousness. This study aims to augment further evidence on the effects of add-on homeopathic treatment in reducing mortality and morbidity in children. Methods: This comparative retrospective study included children hospitalized with acute encephalitis syndrome between July 2016 to December 2016. We compared the parameters of children for whom decisions on Glasgow Outcome scale and Liverpool outcome score aided by add-on homeopathy against those of children from the same year when the add-on homeopathy was not used. All the children were on conventional supportive care and treatment tailored to each child. We also counted the days until the resumption of oral feeding and the length of hospital stay. Results: Ordinal regression analysis on analyses on 622 children (IH +CSC=329; IMP only=293) was done. Odds of a shift towards increased recovery were superior in the homeopathy-added group than in the IMP group without adjustment (crude OR 2·30, 95% CI 1·66 to 3·20; p=0·0001) and with adjustment (adjusted OR 3.38, 95% CI 2·38 to 4.81; p=0·0001). There was 14.8% less mortality and 17.4% more recovery in the add-on homeopathy group compared to CSC alone. Individualized homeopathic remedies commonly used were: Belladonna (n =238), Stramonium (n =17), Opium (n = 14), Sulphur (n=11) and Hyoscyamus niger (n = 7). Conclusion : This retrospective cohort study advocates for add-on homoeopathy in children suffering acute encephalitis which can produce notable improvements in terms of mortality and morbidity. Further studies in different settings are warranted.

Homeopathy for Hypertension: A Comprehensive Scoping Review of the Current Evidence

Background: Hypertension is a growing health concern linked to sedentary lifestyle choices and behaviors. Homeopathy is one of the most frequently used complementary medicine for hypertension, but the state of evidence is not well characterized. This scoping review aims to map the current state of evidence and explore the range of prescription methods used in homeopathy for this condition. Methods: Three electronic databases (PubMed, Cam-Quest, Core-Hom) were systematically searched for published studies evaluating the effects of homeopathic medicines on hypertension. Only clinical trials published in English that assessed the impact of homeopathy on hypertension were included. Data were extracted and organized in a spreadsheet, capturing study population characteristics, prescription methods, outcomes, and specific homeopathic medicines used. Results: A total of 18 studies met the inclusion criteria. The primary outcome assessed in most studies was blood pressure, including systolic and diastolic measurements. Eleven studies reported a statistically significant reduction in blood pressure with homeopathic treatment. Both individualized homeopathy (n=11) and prescription based on specific remedies or complex homeopathy (n=7) demonstrated improvements in hypertension. Lifestyle modifications were consistently incorporated into the management plans in all the studies. However, most of the included studies had short treatment durations. The review provides a list of potentially helpful homeopathic medicines for future research. Conclusion: This scoping review reveals a limited number of studies that have examined the effect of homeopathic medicines in managing hypertension. In addition, determining the optimal prescription method for homeopathy in hypertension management remains challenging. Further research, including well-designed randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes and long-term follow-up, is warranted to strengthen the evidence base.
