AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ READINESS FOR AUTONOMOUS LEARNING OF ENGLISH SUBJECT

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahuikesiapan siswa untuk belajar mandiri mata pelajaranbahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif. Sampelpenelitian ini adalah tiga puluh empat siswa kelas sepuluh.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode langsung dan tidaklangsung, yaitu pedoman wawancara dan kuesioner. Analisis data menggunakan metode campuran, danpeneliti menggunakan kuesioner tertutup dan wawancarasemi terstruktur. Data dari kuesioner dianalisis secarakuantitatif menggunakan perangkat lunak Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Versi 22 dan versidesktop Microsoft Excel 2011. Hasil kuesionermelaporkan bahwa skor rata-rata tertinggi adalah 3,18. Sekitar 59% siswa selalu memiliki target prestasi belajaruntuk belajar mandiri dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, dantingkat interpretasi siswa dikelompokkan antara tingkatmenengah dan tinggi. Berdasarkan hasil wawancara, siswasiap untuk belajar lebih banyak tanggung jawab di banyakbidang proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.Kesimpulannya, siswa siap untuk belajar mandiri dalampelajaran bahasa Inggris karena siswa memilikikarakteristik otonom. Namun, siswa perlu merencanakanproses belajar mereka, menetapkan tujuan, dan mengambilperan yang lebih aktif dalam menegosiasikan proses belajar mengajar. Selain itu, guru dan siswa harus bertukarpikiran untuk menemukan gaya belajar yang dapatdigunakan untuk menerapkan pembelajaran mandiri.Kata Kunci: Kesiapan, Pembelajaran Mandiri, Mata Pelajaran Bahasa InggrisThe purpose of this study was to determine students' readiness for autonomous learning of English subjects.This research is descriptive. The sample of this study was thirty-four tenth-grade students. This study uses direct and indirect methods, namely interview guidelines and questionnaires. The data analysis used the mixed method, and the researcher used a closed questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The data from the questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version 22 and Microsoft Excel 2011 desktop version. The results of the questionnaire reported that the highest average score was 3.18. About 59% of students always have a learning achievement target for autonomous learning in learning English, and the level of interpretation of students is grouped between medium and high levels. Based on the results of the interviews, students are ready to learn more responsibilities in many areas of the English learning process. In conclusion, students are ready for autonomous learning in English lessons because students have the characteristics of autonomous. However, students need to plan their learning process, set goals, and take a more active role in negotiating the teaching and learning process. In addition, teachers and students must exchange ideas to find learning styles that can be used to implement autonomous learning. Keywords: Readiness, Autonomous Learning, English Subject

SHIFTING TO HYBRID LEARNING;WHAT DO RURAL ENGLISH TEACHERS NEED ?

This research focuses on Shifting to hybrid learning; what do rural English teachers need?, how is the learning system during hybrid learning, to illustrate the difficulties in achieving successful learning practices with limited time in several schools in Kapuas Hulu. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection technique is direct communication. The data collection tool is an interview using an interview guide. The schools are SMAN 01, SMPN 02, and MTS Hidayatul Mustaqim Bunut Hulu. The data analysis technique is to make a transcript in the form of text from the interview results. The results of the study are, there is not much that teachers can do in the learning system during the hybrid learning period. From the results of research in 3 schools where teachers have difficulty implementing hybrid learning. Some of the problems experienced by teachers are about the learning media, the learning media used are only books / worksheets, besides that the lack of science and technology knowledge from teachers and attention from schools causes the application of hybrid learning to experience problems, especially during online learning, lack of awareness from students in utilizing hybrid applications. During the pandemic, the role of parents is very important in reminding students. Therefore, what English teachers need in the application of hybrid learning learning is English teacher training regarding learning media and other supporting facilities, collaboration between schools and parents to realize more effective hybrid learning learning, and support from the government to simplify the material. The researcher hopes that it can be a solution for the future, especially during the pandemic. In order to meet the needs of teachers in difficult times, because the needs of teachers also need attention so that practical learning can still be carried out effectively.

ENGLISH TEACHERS' STRATEGIES IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION IN THE FORM OF HYBRID LEARNING

This researcher aims to determine the strategies used by teachers in teaching reading comprehension during the hybrid learning period in implementing this strategy at SMAS Karya Budi Putussibau. This researcher involved only 1 school located in an urban area. This researcher used a descriptive type of research with a qualitative approach. Collecting data using semi-structured interviews and an Observation checklist, with interview tools using interview guidelines. In this research, there was 1 school involved, namely SMAS Karya Budi Putussibau. The informants chose 2 respondents, namely the English teacher. This data collection tool is carried out by telephone which is carried out face-to-face (offline). It was used to support this interview data and observation checklist. Then, these results were analyzed to answer the research problem by collecting through interview guidelines and knowing its relevance, so that they could explore and obtain information contained in schools, especially about teachers' strategies in teaching reading comprehension during hybrid learning classes. This researcher found two strategies used by English teachers at SMAS Karya Budi Putussibau in teaching reading comprehension during hybrid learning classes. The first strategy is Think-Aloud and the second strategy is Question-Answer Relationship (QARs). Applying this strategy, can also improve students' reading comprehension and improve students' reading ability to find main ideas, especially in reading English both inside and outside the classroom during the hybrid learning period.

Podcast: Its Implementation for Entertaining Public Speaking Skill

This research aimed to find how the implementation of podcast for entertaining public speaking skill and to find out the students responses toward the implementation of podcast in entertaining public speaking skill of English Education Study Program of IKIP PGRI Pontianak. This research used a case study approach.To obtain the data, the researcher used observation technique and direct commmunication technique, they were observation checklist and interview as tools of data collection. The subject of this research was the second semester students of IKIP PGRI Pontianak. To analyze the data, researcher used in this research was descriptive narrative. This technique is determined through three steps, Data Reduction, Data Display, and Conclussion(Miles and Huberman, 1984) from the results of observation checklist and interview.Implementing the podcast have advantages to students,one of them when the practice students of podcast can help improve students' english skills, especially in the speaking. The activities by video live podcast support the advantages of the implementation of podcast in public speaking cours, and implementation of podcast in public speaking course is very useful for students in improving their speaking skills due to interesting learning methods, so that they can increase their insight and confidence in doing public speaking. STUDENTS’ ANXIETY IN LEARNING ENGLISH ( A Descriptive Study to the Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 03 Mempawah Hilir in the Academic Year of 2021/2022 )

This research is the result of research on students’ anxiety in learning English by students of SMPN 03 Mempawah Hilir, West Kalimantan. Anxiety in learning English is often reported to negatively affect English learning. This research aims to determine the level of anxiety and the factors that dominate the anxiety of students at SMPN 03 in Mempawah Hilir, West Kalimantan in learning English, which will then be carried out further research to respond to the findings in this research. The method used in this research is descriptive approach, where the findings are presented in the form of a description of the calculations from the data obtained from questionnaires and interviews. This research took junior high school students in one class as respondents. They are class VII A students in 2021/2022. Questionnaires and interviews were distributed to collect data on students' anxiety in learning English. The questions in the questionnaire were made to determine the level of students' anxiety in learning English but interviews were conducted to determine the factors that dominate students' anxiety in learning English. The data obtained from the questionnaire will be calculated the average and percentage. Then the value obtained will be categorized such as mild anxiety, moderate anxiety, severe anxiety, and panic. From the results of interviews with students, conclusions will be drawn to see the similarities experienced by students. It was found that level of students’ anxiety in this school is severe anxiety. In mild anxiety, the average result is (59%) with enough criteria. On moderate anxiety, the average result is (57%) with enough criteria, (67%) of severe anxiety belongs to the strong criteria. There is a (47%) average score on panic anxiety that belongs to the enough criteria. Based on the results of these percentages, students are in the Severe Anxiety. From the results of the interview, it was found that the factor that dominates students' anxiety in learning English is test anxiety. All respondent are 24 students of class VII A in 2021/2022.

AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS' DIFFICULTIES IN READING COMPREHENSION AT SMPN 05 TANAH PINOH BARAT

Quantitative descriptive research was conducted to determine the students' difficulties in reading comprehension and the factors of students' difficulties at SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat. The subjects of this study were seventh grade students of SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat. Son. Samples were selected using purposive sampling. The purpose of this study was to determine the difficulties of students in reading comprehension, and the factors of students' difficulties in class VII SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat. Researchers used quantitative descriptive methods. The subjects of this study were students of SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat. Samples were selected using purposive sampling. Data collection techniques in this study using measurement techniques and indirect communication. The instruments used are reading test and closed questionnaire. The researcher gave a test with 20 multiple choice questions. After getting the data from the reading test, the researcher analyzed the data by calculating the students' scores on the tests that had been given to each class. Then the researcher categorizes the students' scores on the test based on their ability level. To find out the students' difficulties, the researcher calculated the percentage of students' difficulties in five aspects of reading comprehension. Data from closed questionnaires were analyzed by calculating the percentage of answers from students. The test results showed that the seventh-grade students of SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat had difficulties in five aspects of reading comprehension. Namely, the main idea, supporting details, vocabulary, inference, and references. The most challenging aspects for students are vocabulary with a percentage of 58%, and references by 62%. The main idea with the percentage of student difficulty 38%, supporting details 38%, and inference 42%. The results of the questionnaire show that students' difficulty in reading comprehension is caused by 3 factors, namely: Lack of understanding of reading material, difficulty in using reading strategies, and the last is limited vocabulary knowledge. The conclusion of this study is that students fail to understand vocabulary and make conclusions. Speaking Anxiety of Students of Parit Baru English Village

This Research aims to find out the kinds and sources of speaking anxiety of the Students of English Parit Baru Village, Sungai Raya Regency in the academic year of 2021. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Ten students from different grades of primary school around Parit Baru village were involved in this research. This research used a semi-structured interview and field note as the tool of collection data. data collection used an observation about students’ behavior during class that direct students to become Anxiety. The result showed that the kinds of speaking anxiety of English Parit Baru Village students were trait anxiety, where several students keep silent when the tutor ask them, students incapable to express their feelings, ideas, and thought; situation-specific anxiety when the tutor ask students to speak they sometimes can do it, in other condition or topics they also incapable to speak; state anxiety, when students ask by their tutor to speak suddenly, they cannot control their nervousness. Furthermore, the sources of speaking anxiety from personal anxiety can be overcome by actively of students during learning; interpersonal anxiety students need any motivation to learn speaking skills; teacher belief about language learning can be manifest by a good impression of teacher during teaching. For classroom procedure, the class needs to be relaxed; language testing derived from fear, shame, and doubt of the students.

An error anlysis on english descriptive text at the first grade of junior high school

Abstract This research consists of problems, objectives, methods, findings, and conclusions of Error Analysis in English Descriptive Text at the First Grade of Junior High School. This study aimed to determine the types of grammatical errors, the most dominant errors and to analyze the causes of grammatical errors made by students in writing descriptive text essays. This research was conducted on grade I students of SMP Assalam Pontianak in the academic year 2021/2022. the total population is 94 students from three classes. The sample was grade one C which consists of 35 students. This type of research uses descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques used were direct communication techniques and documentation. Data collection tools were interview guides and student worksheets. This study found that from 35 students who had made descriptive texts, there were 402 grammatical errors. The data collected were from 61 English essays written by 35 students. Data were analyzed based on student worksheets and interview transcripts to find the types of errors and dominant errors and the causes of errors. Based on data analysis, the results of this study showed that the errors of 35 students in producing English writing were (1) misformation 47%, (2) omission 40%, (3) Addition 10%, and (4) misordering 3%. Based on the results of the interview, it can be classified that translation was the main cause of grammatical errors.

AN IMPLEMENTATION OF CHARACTER EDUCATION IN TEACHING ENGLISH (Descriptive Research at SMPN 2 Pontianak in the Academic Year of 2021/2022

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana implementasi pendidikan karakter dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris dan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor apa saja yang membuat siswa tidak menerapkan pendidikan karakter dalam kegiatan sehari-hari. Subjek penelitian ini adalah seorang guru bahasa Inggris SMPN 2 Pontianak tahun ajaran 2021/2022. Sampel dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui dokumentasi, observasi dan wawancara. Dokumentasi digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data dari RPP. Observasi digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data dari proses pengajaran. Sedangkan wawancara digunakan untuk mengumpulkan informasi lebih lanjut tentang implementasi dan faktor siswa dalam menerapkan pendidikan karakter. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru bahasa Inggris telah menerapkan 14 pendidikan karakter di setiap RPP dan 16 nilai karakter dalam praktiknya. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat selisih sebesar 0,875% (hampir sesuai). Diketahui juga bahwa faktor utama yang membuat siswa tidak menerapkan karakter adalah faktor keluarga. AbstractThis research was aimed to analyze how the implementation of character education in teaching English and to discover what are the factors that make students not apply character education in their daily activities. The subject of this research is an English teacher of SMPN 2 Pontianak in the academic year of 2021/2022. The sample was chosen using a purposive sampling technique. The data were collected through documentation, observation and interview. Documentation was used to collect data from lesson plans. The observation was used to collect data from the teaching process. While, an interview was used to collect more information about the implementation and the students’ factor in apply character education. The research showed that English teacher has implemented 14 character educations in each lesson plan and 16 character values in practice. So, it can be concluded that there is a 0,875% difference between them (almost fit). It is also known that the main factor that made the students have not applied the character is the family factor. An Analysis of Students Writing Anxiety At IKIP PGRI Pontianak

The emergence of anxiety in writing will affect the results of writing, the students are anxious how to use proper grammar, and they are worried if their writing will be evaluated. Several previous studies examined students in the early semester and found that their anxiety is still high, this study aimed to analyze writing anxiety to know the types and the levels of writing anxiety experienced by the students. This study involved sixth semester students of the English Education Study Program at IKIP PGRI Pontianak, with a total of 36 students, 25 of whom were female and 11 were male. The research method used is descriptive quantitative, where the data analysis statistically, and the data were collected through SLWAI questionnaire adapted from Cheng (2004). The result showed that students in the sixth semester still experienced writing anxiety even though it was at a moderate level with a percentage 53%, while the types of writing anxiety was measured based on three types: Cognitive Anxiety, Somatic Anxiety, and Avoidance Behavior, data analysis showed that students experienced Cognitive Anxiety with the highest mean score of 18.41 among the two types mentioned. The researcher hopes that this study will useful for readers that want to know about writing anxiety, and this research can be used as additional references for other researcher that has similar topic in the future.
