The fluctuating temperature poses challenges to the survival of amphibians. This study employed two cold-adapted brown frog species, Rana dybowskii and Rana amurensis, from high-latitude cold regions as research models. We explored the mechanism by which contrasting peak daily habitat temperatures affect their physiological function and symbiotic microbial community. The results indicate that these two cold-adapted brown frog species exhibit a common physiological response of enhanced immune capacity and suppressed antioxidant capacity when subjected to elevated temperatures. However, they demonstrate unique coping strategies and physiological regulatory effects on gut microbiota: R. dybowskii activates its immune system by reducing the abundance of Actinobacteria and inhibiting metabolic pathways, but the decrease in Bacteroidetes abundance impairs antioxidant efficacy. On the other hand, R. amurensis experiences impairment of antioxidant function due to the regulatory effects of a significant increase in Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, a marked decrease in Bifidobacterium, and a decline in gut microbiota α-diversity. For the first time, this study reveals the adaptive mechanisms by which two cold-adapted amphibian species respond to the contrasting peak daily habitat temperatures, providing a scientific basis for understanding how ectotherms react to climate change and for predicting their population dynamics.

The fish liver serves as a crucial metabolic organ, integral to detoxification, nutrient storage, and energy regulation, thereby playing a pivotal role in enabling organisms to adapt to environmental fluctuations. The silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), an important species in Chinese freshwater aquaculture, demonstrates limited tolerance to hypoxic conditions. Nevertheless, the alterations in gene expression patterns within the liver of silver carp under hypoxic stress are not yet fully elucidated. In this study, we exposed silver carp to hypoxic conditions using a natural oxygen depletion method and utilized RNA sequencing to investigate transcriptional regulation in the liver across varying levels of hypoxic stress. We identified a total of 628 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), with 42 being common across all stress conditions. These DEGs were classified into four groups based on their expression trends and subjected to GO enrichment analysis, which revealed significant enrichment in terms associated with the endoplasmic reticulum, cell proliferation, myofibrils, and sterol metabolic processes. The KEGG enrichment analysis identified nine pathways that were consistently and significantly enriched across all stress levels, six of which encompass the maintenance of cellular homeostasis, metabolic regulation, and immune modulation. The elucidation of the molecular network associated with hypoxia adaptation in the liver of silver carp presented in this study provides crucial theoretical insights into the mechanisms underlying hypoxia tolerance in fish.

Managing community cats on islands requires reconciling animal-welfare mandates with biodiversity protection under real operational constraints. In the Canary Islands (Spain), national Law 7/2023 endorses ethical, non-lethal colony management, while subsequent regional resolutions restrict TNR in and around protected areas, narrowing municipal room for action. We combine a multilevel governance assessment with stochastic demographic simulations parameterized from official records to compare three sterilization regimes over 20 years. The intensive regime (≈60–70%/year) reflects the coverage threshold previously identified by Spain-based modelling and field evaluations and adopted in national program guidance; the 20%/year regime represents the pre-resolution baseline widely observed across the archipelago up to December 2024; and the 4%/year regime reflects the post-resolution reality, with abrupt declines in sterilizations, operations largely confined to urban cores, and program suspensions in multiple municipalities. Minimal (4%) and low (20%) efforts produce rapid population growth, bringing numbers close to the assumed carrying capacity under our deliberately high-K configuration and sustaining high densities and associated welfare and ecological risks; only sustained high-coverage TNR prevents saturation and produces progressive declines across island contexts. Under insular constraints, outcomes are determined by achievable coverage rather than regulatory intent; aligning policy and implementation to secure continuous, high-coverage TNR—particularly in risk-sensitive areas with appropriate safeguards—offers a feasible pathway to meet animal-welfare obligations while limiting ecological pressure.

This study evaluated the effects of thermal and noise stress on rabbits (90 HYLA hybrids), focusing on physiological responses, production performance, and welfare. Three dietary treatments were compared: a control diet (C), a diet supplemented with milk thistle seed cake (SMT), and a diet containing fermented milk thistle seed cake (FMT). The aim was to assess whether these feed additives could mitigate the adverse effects of environmental stress. Health status was monitored through clinical observation and analysis of biochemical indicators, including enzymes, lipid and protein metabolism markers, and total antioxidant status. Thermal stress at the onset of fattening influenced average daily gain, feed intake, and carcass yield, while dietary intervention modulated these effects. The FMT group demonstrated the lowest feed intake and most efficient feed conversion during later growth stages, but had lower slaughter weight compared with the control. In contrast, rabbits fed the SMT diet achieved the highest slaughter weight and superior growth efficiency. These findings suggest that milk thistle, particularly in combination with probiotic fermentation, can enhance feed utilization, growth performance, and stress resilience in rabbits, contributing to more sustainable and welfare-oriented production systems.

Thoroughbred race performance is influenced by genetics, training, recovery, and management, but decisions about race readiness are often subjective and lack validated physiological markers. This study evaluated thiol-oxidised albumin, a blood-based indicator of oxidative stress, as a potential biomarker of pre-race fitness in Australian Thoroughbreds. Seventy-five clinically healthy racehorses from seven stables were monitored across 216 competitive events (150 races, 66 trials). Blood samples were collected from the jugular at baseline, 48 h pre-race, and for each day up to 8 days post-race to examine levels of thiol-oxidised using the OxiDx test. At baseline, thiol-oxidised albumin levels were stable, but 24% of horses exhibited oxidative stress before racing, rising to 53% after three consecutive races. Thiol-oxidised albumin levels also remained increased for at least 8 days post-race. Statistical analyses were conducted in GraphPad Prism 10.6 using paired t-tests or repeated-measures one-way ANOVA with Dunnett’s post hoc test, alongside a generalised estimating equation model to assess associations with ordinal variables; significance was set at p < 0.05. Reference change values were calculated to determine thresholds for biologically meaningful changes in thiol-oxidised albumin levels. Increased pre-race oxidative stress was significantly associated with poorer finishing positions and lower trainer-perceived performance but was unrelated to horse age or sex. Horses without oxidative stress were more likely to finish in the top three. These findings demonstrate that oxidative stress prior to racing is common and adversely affects performance. Thiol-oxidised albumin represents a promising objective biomarker to guide training and racing strategies, with implications for both performance and equine welfare.

Periodontal disease is a progressive inflammatory condition frequently diagnosed in dogs, particularly in small breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers, Toy Terriers, Spitz, Toy Poodles and other breeds predisposed to rapid plaque and tartar accumulation. As the field of regenerative medicine becomes more popular, more and more attention is being paid to substances that promote tissue regeneration, one of which is platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is an autologous blood-derived product rich in growth factors that stimulate tissue regeneration and modulate inflammation. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of PRP injections without additional activating agents in the management of stage 2–3 periodontitis in small-breed dogs. Forty-two adult dogs (Yorkshire Terriers, Toy Terriers, Pomeranians, Toy Poodles, and Havanese) were enrolled and divided into two groups: PRP (n = 30) and control (n = 12). Following standard dental prophylaxis, the PRP group received gingival, submucosal, and periodontal pocket injections of PRP (0.1 mL per site). Periodontitis stage, gingival index, periodontal pocket depth, and horizontal bone loss were evaluated at baseline and 30 days post-treatment. PRP therapy significantly improved all evaluated parameters (p < 0.05). The gingival index decreased threefold, periodontal pocket depth was reduced twofold, and horizontal bone loss decreased by more than twofold compared with baseline and controls. No adverse reactions, discomfort, or postoperative complications were observed. The administration of non-activated PRP as an adjunct to dental cleaning significantly enhances soft and hard tissue regeneration in small-breed dogs with stage 2–3 periodontitis. PRP therapy represents a safe, minimally invasive, and effective regenerative approach for improving periodontal health in routine veterinary dentistry.

Including soybean hulls (SH) in ruminant diets increase the carbon circularity of livestock systems. We evaluated whether SH could partially replace corn grain (CG) in the diet of lactating cows (≈7.5% of the total diet). Six Holstein multiparous cows were fed a 50:50 (dry matter basis) corn-silage to concentrate diet for two 25-day periods in three replicated 2 × 2 Latin Squares using linear mixed models. Feed intake, milk yield and composition, N excretion, CH4 production, and ruminal microbial profiles were measured. Enteric CH4 was measured in respiration chambers. The DMI of cows fed SH (28 kg DM/d) was greater (p = 0.034) than those fed CG (26 kg DM/d), but no differences were observed in milk production (p = 0.557) or enteric CH4 emission intensity (g/kg milk, p = 0.387). Enteric CH4 emissions tended to be greater in SH-fed cows (484 g/d) than CG-fed cows (456 g/d; p = 0.075), and N excretion was significantly greater in SH than CG cows (p < 0.001). No mayor shifts in ruminal microbiota or overall ruminal environment were observed. In conclusion, SH can partially replace CG in diets of lactating dairy cows without affecting production, but potential negative environmental impacts should be considered.

In this study, eight treatment groups were set up with three replicates in each group to investigate the effects of Bacillus, Lactobacillus, and molasses on the chemical composition and fermentation quality of fermented rice straw. Furthermore, an animal experiment was conducted to determine the nutrition apparent digestibility, ruminal fermentation characteristics, and methane emission in Hu sheep. The results showed that the dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) content in the group treated with Bacillus megaterium and Lactobacillus acidophilus (BMLB) was significantly higher than that in the group with no additive (CK) (p < 0.05). Compared with the CK group, all treatments with single or composite addition of Bacillus significantly reduced the content of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) (p < 0.05). The content of acetate, propionate, and NH3-N in the BMLB group were significantly lower than those in the CK group (p < 0.05). In addition, the Hu sheep in the BMLB group showed a significant reduction in daily methane emission per unit of metabolic body weight. In conclusion, the BMLB treatment significantly improved the nutritional value, fermentation quality, ruminal fermentation, and methane emission of rice straw haylage in Hu sheep.

The specific objective of the current paper was the description of some health-related outcomes in sheep and goat farms in Greece with common grazing with wildlife ruminants. Faecal samples were collected and information regarding health management applied on farms was obtained from sheep and goat farms located throughout Greece (325 and 119 farms, respectively). Common grazing of livestock (sheep, goats) with wildlife ruminants (roe deer, red deer) was reported in 9.2% of farms. Faecal epg counts in farms with common grazing with wildlife ruminants were higher than in farms with no common grazing: respective median values were 270 epg versus 150 epg; also, there was a tendency for faecal counts >300 epg to be recorded more frequently among the former farms (36.1% versus 23.1% of farms). Median annual incidence of cases of abortion and of cases of diarrhoea in lambs/kids was significantly higher in farms with common grazing with wildlife ruminants: 1.7% and 9.0%, respectively, versus 0.0% and 1.7%, respectively, in farms with no common grazing. The findings have revealed associations of common grazing with wildlife ruminants with the health of sheep and goats. These can have implications in the health management of farms, for example, in the administration of anthelmintic treatments and in the development of vaccination programmes in livestock farms.
