Oxides of Iron and Zinc Prepared with Use of Waste Biomass from Allium Sativum: Sustainable Antineoplastic Agents against HT29 and HepG2 Cells

AbstractThis study focuses on the synthesis of iron and zinc oxide nanoparticles (IO/ZnO NPs) using outer dry skin (waste biomass) of Allium sativum. The prepared NPs were found to be polycrystalline, polydispersed, and sphere‐shaped, showing average sizes of 47 nm for IO NPs and 49 nm for ZnO NPs. Both types of NPs revealed robust antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. IO NPs exhibited superior antioxidant activity (61.63% at 150 µg/mL) and brine shrimp lethality (LC50 of 162.13 µg/mL) compared to ZnO NPs. In a similar pattern, the IO NPs exhibited low hemolysis and proved to be compatible with human RBCs. Zeta potential measurements indicated mild stability and poor flocculation, with values of −24.6 mV for IO NPs, while ZnO NPs depicted moderate stability with a value of +21.6 mV. Similarly, IO NPs exhibited superior antineoplastic activity than ZnO NPs against HT29 cells (IC50 of 82.98 µg/mL) and presented better efficacy against HepG2 cells (IC50 of 49.09 µg/mL). Flow cytometry indicates that IO NPs induced higher early and late apoptotic rates in cancer cells. So, it can be inferred that IO NPs synthesized from A. sativum disclosed superior biocompatibility for its use as an antineoplastic drug with reduced cost.

Bioengineering Innovations in Global Dental Infection Control: Applications and Adaptations in Clinical Settings.

Dental practices pose a high risk of microbial contamination due to frequent exposure to bodily fluids like saliva and blood. Bioengineering innovations have emerged as vital tools to enhance infection control in dental settings. This review aims to assess the global applications and effectiveness of these innovations, particularly focusing on antimicrobial biomaterials, sterilization techniques, and personal protective equipment (PPE). A systematic review was conducted across major databases to identify studies from 2000 to 2024 that examined bioengineering technologies used in dental infection control. Inclusion criteria included studies focusing on antimicrobial materials, PPE, or novel sterilization technologies. Data extraction followed PRISMA guidelines, focusing on study design, dental settings, and clinical outcomes related to infection control. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria, covering diverse geographical regions, including Italy, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and India. Antimicrobial agents like silver and zinc oxide nanoparticles, UV-C sterilization, and low-temperature plasma were found to significantly reduce microbial contamination. The pooled effect size across studies was 1.62 (95% CI: 1.41-1.82) with low heterogeneity (I² = 6.4%). However, barriers such as high costs and limited resource availability were highlighted, particularly in lower-income regions. Bioengineering innovations show significant potential for enhancing infection control in dental settings worldwide. While the technologies offer improved safety and hygiene, challenges related to cost and accessibility persist. Further research is needed to explore cost-effective and scalable solutions, particularly in resource-limited settings. The integration of bioengineering technologies in dental practices can significantly improve infection control measures, reducing microbial contamination and enhancing safety for both patients and healthcare workers. These innovations hold promise for global adaptation, particularly in response to emerging public health challenges.

Effect of ablation time on the optical, morphological, and electrical properties of ZnO nanoparticles synthesized via eco-friendly laser ablation in deionized water

Abstract In this study, we present an eco-friendly and scalable method for synthesizing ZnO nanoparticles via pulsed laser ablation in liquids. A Nd:YAG laser operating at a wavelength of 532 nm was used to ablate high-purity (99.99%) Zn targets immersed in deionized water for 15, 30, and 60 min to produce colloidal solutions of ZnO nanoparticles. The morphological, optical, and electrical properties of the laser-synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using several techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), photoluminescence (PL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and Mott–Schottky analysis (MSA). The average particle size was found to decrease from 36.8 to 27.4 with increasing the ablation time from 15 to 60 min due to fragmentation effects resulting from the interaction of the incident laser pulses with the laser-generated particles. A reverse behavior was observed for the energy band gap where it showed an increase from 3.23 to 3.32 eV with increasing the ablation time from 15 to 60 min. PL spectra exhibited a distinct emission peak around 400 nm, indicating the optical properties of the synthesized nanoparticles. MSA and EIS demonstrated an n-type conductivity and enhanced electrical properties of the ZnO with increasing ablation times.
