Logging in to Learn: The Effects of Online Civic Education Pedagogy on a Latinx and AAPI Civic Engagement Youth Conference

ABSTRACTCivic education is essential to the health of any democracy. When COVID-19 emerged in the spring of 2020, almost all civic education efforts went online. This increased interest in the effectiveness of online civic education. Does it lead to similar outcomes as in-person education? I used student evaluations from a youth civic engagement conference co-run by Latinx and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) non-profit organizations to compare learning outcomes on multiple dimensions of civic education, from an in-person conference in 2019 and an online conference in 2020. I find that although students improved over the course of both conferences, the 2019 in-person conference yielded slightly greater improvement in civic knowledge confidence than the online conference. Other dimensions—verifiable knowledge, self-efficacy, and community consciousness—increased after participation in the conference in both years; however, the increases were similar between the online and in-person formats.

Consistency in Beliefs and Behaviors of Highly Religious Christian Youth

Abstract With Christian Smith’s consent, research was conducted at a life Conference (Christian & Missionary Alliance’s national youth conference, July 2013) using a modified version of Christian Smith’s and Lisa Pearce’s interview instrument, used in the National Study of Youth & Religion (2002). Approximately two thousand life Conference attendees (close to 400 youth leaders and 1600 students) participated in the research, though this study reports only on the adolescent responses. Frequency measures and multiple regression analyses provide evidence that adolescents’ religiosity appears to be positively associated with pro-social beliefs and behaviors and negatively associated with pop-culture-religiosity (zombies, vampires, good witches, etc.) beliefs. Single items and scales represented the religiosity variable and the associations of these varying measures of religiosity to dependent variables were compared and contrasted. Implications for issues that may need more or less focus in the classroom with future youth leaders will be discussed.

Online interventions for reducing hate speech and cyberhate: A systematic review.

The unique feature of the Internet is that individual negative attitudes toward minoritized and racialized groups and more extreme, hateful ideologies can find their way onto specific platforms and instantly connect people sharing similar prejudices. The enormous frequency of hate speech/cyberhate within online environments creates a sense of normalcy about hatred and the potential for acts of intergroup violence or political radicalization. While there is some evidence of effective interventions to counter hate speech through television, radio, youth conferences, and text messaging campaigns, interventions for online hate speech have only recently emerged. This review aimed to assess the effects of online interventions to reduce online hate speech/cyberhate. We systematically searched 2 database aggregators, 36 individual databases, 6 individual journals, and 34 websites, as well as bibliographies of published reviews of related literature, and scrutiny of annotated bibliographies of related literature. We included randomized and rigorous quasi-experimental studies of online hate speech/cyberhate interventions that measured the creation and/or consumption of hateful content online and included a control group. Eligible populations included youth (10-17 years) and adult (18+ years) participants of any racial/ethnic background, religious affiliation, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, or citizenship status. The systematic search covered January 1, 1990 to December 31, 2020, with searches conducted between August 19, 2020 and December 31, 2020, and supplementary searches undertaken between March 17 and 24, 2022. We coded characteristics of the intervention, sample, outcomes, and research methods. We extracted quantitative findings in the form of a standardized mean difference effect size. We computed a meta-analysis on two independent effect sizes. Two studies were included in the meta-analysis, one of which had three treatment arms. For the purposes of the meta-analysis we chose the treatment arm from the Álvarez-Benjumea and Winter (2018) study that most closely aligned with the treatment condition in the Bodine-Baron et al. (2020) study. However, we also present additional single effect sizes for the other treatment arms from the Álvarez-Benjumea and Winter (2018) study. Both studies evaluated the effectiveness of an online intervention for reducing online hate speech/cyberhate. The Bodine-Baron et al. (2020) study had a sample size of 1570 subjects, while the Álvarez-Benjumea and Winter (2018) study had a sample size of 1469 tweets (nested in 180 subjects). The mean effect was small (g = -0.134, 95% confidence interval [-0.321, -0.054]). Each study was assessed for risk of bias on the following domains: randomization process, deviations from intended interventions, missing outcome data, measurement of the outcome, and selection of the reported results. Both studies were rated as "low risk" on the randomization process, deviations from intended interventions, and measurement of the outcome domains. We assessed the Bodine-Baron et al. (2020) study as "some" risk of bias regarding missing outcome data and "high risk" for selective outcome reporting bias. The Álvarez-Benjumea and Winter (2018) study was rated as "some concern" for the selective outcome reporting bias domain. The evidence is insufficient to determine the effectiveness of online hate speech/cyberhate interventions for reducing the creation and/or consumption of hateful content online. Gaps in the evaluation literature include the lack of experimental (random assignment) and quasi-experimental evaluations of online hate speech/cyberhate interventions, addressing the creation and/or consumption of hate speech as opposed to the accuracy of detection/classification software, and assessing heterogeneity among subjects by including both extremist and non-extremist individuals in future intervention studies. We provide suggestions for how future research on online hate speech/cyberhate interventions can fill these gaps moving forward.

The article aims to demonstrate the current state and directions of the institute's development in line with the adopted strategy. It describes the results of fundamental and applied research performed over the last 5 years, reveals the main aspects of scientific, organizational, innovative and social activities, and presents the achieved and target personnel and economic indicators of the Institute's work. The research has been performed using retrospective analysis and statistical data processing. The paper shows the achievements of the Institute in rejuvenation of its research staff, advanced training of young researchers at its own postgraduate courses, preparation and defense of theses at the Institute's Academic Council. The Institute's efforts related to its integration with academic and university research, as well as its activities in the international arena, are outlined. The strategy to improve the material level provides incentives for high quality implementation of the researcher's individual plan. Significant results have been achieved in addressing the social concerns of the Institute's staff, most of which relate to availability of housing. Activities of the Young Scientists' Council to organize competitions, the All-Russian Youth Conference, and launching of a web-based publication on issues of subsoil use are described. Innovative and research and education centers, laboratories for non-destructive testing and geomaterials testing have been set up to develop the required infrastructure. The main anticipated results of the Institute's development strategy are the concentration of material and human resources to tackle research in priority areas, achieving world-class results in these areas, creating an innovation potential for the development of critical technologies in the Russian Federation and reaching the top-level category of institutes

The 23rd Russian Youth Conference on Physics of Semiconductors and Nanostructures, Opto- and Nanoelectronics (RYCPS) was held in Saint Petersburg on November 23 – 26, 2021. It was organized by Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.The program of the Conference included semiconductor technology, heterostructures with quantum wells and quantum dots, bulk properties of semiconductors, opto- and nanoelectronic devices and new materials. Given the restrictions on meetings of a large number of people associated with COVID-19, the organizing committee of the conference decided to hold it in a virtual format. The oral sessions were held on the Zoom platform, and the poster session was organized using the Miro online whiteboard and the Skype platform. This provided an opportunity for valuable discussions between the conference participants and experienced scientists.The conference included two invited talks given by leading scientists from Ioffe Institute, devoted to actual problems and major advances in physics and technology. The keynote speakers were Anton Vershovskii (presentation "Optical quantum sensors based on thermal atoms and atom-like structures") and Mikhail Glazov (presentation "Spin noise in semiconductors"). Students, graduate and postgraduate students presented their results on plenary and poster sessions. The total number of accepted abstracts published in Russian (the official conference language) was 105. Here we publish 24 selected papers in English.Like previous years, the participants were involved in the competition for the best report. Certificates and cash prizes were awarded to a number of participants for the presentations selected by the Program Committee. Alexey Kuznetsov (Alferov University, Saint Petersburg) was awarded for the best presentation among students with a report "Influence of plasmonic effects on the localization of electromagnetic waves in GaP nanowires". Sergey Savchenko (Ural Federal University, Yekaterinburg) was awarded for the best presentation among postgraduate students with a report "Thermal quenching of luminescence of excitons and defect centers in InP/ZnS quantum dots". The wave of the technological revolution has a strong correlation with the globalization process which has succeeded in creating a new culture and lifestyle in society. With or without realizing it, the world is undergoing a transition process, which is quite a change. These changes can bring about both change and disaster in particular for young people. From the available data, it can be seen that the decreasing interest of young people to worship. Relevant services are needed in responding to technological developments in the era of the industrial revolution. The discussion in this article emphasizes how to serve young people in today's context and according to their style and language but still based on the truth of God's Word. In writing this article using a descriptive analysis method with a qualitative approach. The Unlimited Fire Youth Conference is an example of a relevant youth conference and community. By maximizing the use of existing social media to reach and serve young people.

Abstract: The study sought to monitor, analyze and compare the political marketing tools used by the means of communication under study in creating the media image of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during the seventh and eighth youth conferences, by applying to Al-Akhbar newspaper, the seventh day website, and the president's official Facebook page during the period 1/7 / 2019 to 9/30/2019. The study found the diversity of strategies and techniques that were used according to the political and social contexts surrounding each conference. The results also found that Al-Akhbar newspaper was the most diversified in using marketing strategies and techniques to promote the person of the president, and the means of communication under study focused on building the media image of the president using three basic marketing techniques: • Highlighting the president's interest in the humanitarian aspect to all audiences • Highlighting the president's focus and attention on internal issues of concern to the public. Highlighting the president's support and promoting national institutions such as the army. The analysis showed that the president's Facebook page is producing what is actually productive. In other words, the page did not provide any technique or marketing method for the president's media image, as it is only a vector, despite the presence of a large number of followers, and the analysis showed weakness in the press articles within the seventh day website in the process of political marketing and building the media image of the president, while Al-Akhbar newspaper diversified In the editorial arts, which leads to an impact and a process of conviction for the audience.

The 1972 Soviet-American Youth Conference: The Illusion of Consensus

Hoping to capitalize on the spirit of detente, in June 1972 the National Council of American-Soviet Friendship (hereafter the NCASF, the official Soviet-Amer-ican friendship group headquartered in Manhattan) and the Soviet Committee of Youth Organizations (hereafter the KMO, the umbrella organization administer-ing the various Soviet youth groups) co-sponsored the first-ever Soviet-American Youth Conference held in Minsk. The conference proposed to feature around 100 young people from each side discussing issues relevant to youth the world over— “their hopes and problems and participation in the social struggle,” university life, future careers, war and peace, racism, imperialism, and national liberation.1 The topics, particularly the attention devoted to peace and imperialism, revealed the pro-Soviet orientation of the NCASF and hinted the conference would fea-ture much discussion of the Soviet Union’s pet causes. Still, the NCASF and the KMO promised to field diverse delegations and facilitate open dialogue.2 The sponsors of the conference envisioned the event as an attempt to bridge the Cold War divide, make friends, and generate solidarity across borders. Frank discus-sion at the conference would build mutual understanding and serve as an example of future possible dialogue between two sides now eager and able to get to know one another. This article examines the 1972 Soviet-American Conference as a transnation-al point of interaction between the Soviet Union and the United States, wherein youth from both sides exchanged experiences, ideas, and representations of themselves. Things did not go as planned however. As we will see, the Soviet effort to control all aspects of the conference, including the composition of the American delegation, inadvertently led to stereotypes being confirmed rather than rejected. Because of the make-up of each delegation, the conference produced an ultimate-ly distorted but seemingly cliched image of both sides in which Soviet youth appeared as a monolithic bloc of devoted patriots and the Americans as alienated youth. Much of this divergence related to differing perspectives on the importance of national consensus. For the Komsomol members (the youth wing of the Com-munist Party) who made up the Soviet delegation and who acted as the official representatives of Soviet youth, national consensus remained an absolute virtue. By 1972, with the Vietnam War still raging and the memory of the turmoil of the 1960s still lingering, many of the American youth at the conference by contrast rejected any display of national consensus. This gap in life experience and per-spective made solidarity, the ultimate goal of the conference, difficult to generate.

The International Youth Conference on Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies (YETI-2019) was held in Saint Petersburg on July 11 – 22, 2019. It was organized by Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. The YETI-2019 Conference gave an opportunity to young researchers and early-career scientists to participate in a series of lectures which reviewed the current trends and knowledge in the fields of electronics, nanoelectronics, telecommunications, optical and information technologies.YETI-2019 collected 50 reports by over than 150 researchers from 6 countries. Conference included two keynote invited talks given by leading scientists devoted to actual problems and major advances in physics and technology. The keynote speakers were Luis Conde from Univ. Politécnica de Madrid, Spain (presentation “Plasma propulsion for telecommunication satellites”) and Thomas Maurer from Universite de Technologie de Troyes, France (presentation “Active plasmonics: the rising of mechanoplasmonics and perspectives for integrating strain nanogauges into matter”). Presentations by various scientists gave an overview of recent achievements and future prospects in fields of development and design of nanoelectronic and telecommunication devices, signal processing, material science and nanotechnology. During the event, informal meetings provided an opportunity for potential partners to establish contacts, share new project ideas and start new collaborations. A positive approach to adolescent sexual health promotion: a qualitative evaluation of key stakeholder perceptions of the Australian Positive Adolescent Sexual Health (PASH) Conference

BackgroundPositive youth development (PYD) models are effective in improving adolescent sexual health. Adolescent programs including peer educators, parents and the wider community also demonstrate effectiveness in improving sexual health outcomes. An innovative Positive Adolescent Sexual Health (PASH) Conference model has been introduced in Northern NSW, Australia. It is run by the North Coast PASH Consortium, which is based on a health promotion framework. It takes a positive and holistic approach to sexual health education, and incorporates peer educators, parents, community workers and teachers. This study provides an introductory evaluation of the PASH Conference and identifies areas for increased effectiveness. It is intended as an early piece of research to inform future evaluations and to provide introductory information for public health educators.MethodsData collection included semi-structured interviews with 13 key stakeholders of the PASH Conference. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using deductive thematic analysis.ResultsSubjects included 2 teachers, 2 parents, 2 youth conference workers, 2 organisers, 2 presenters and 3 Peer Educators engaging Peers (PEEPs). Stakeholders perceived that young people were engaged to strengthen their sexual health and wellbeing due to many factors. These followed 3 themes: a safe and open learning environment, empowerment of young people and involvement of the support system and broader community. Multiple recommendations were identified across 2 themes: changes to conference format and planning, and enhancing stakeholder engagement.DiscussionThe PASH Conference is a promising new youth development design promoting positive adolescent sexual health, which may provide a feasible model for public health educators to trial. Elements of the conference identified as engaging to youth align well with those in PYD research literature. This study provides an early piece of research to inform the design of future research on the PASH Conference including evaluation of behavioural outcomes. It provides introductory information to inform PASH Conference development to further increase its effectiveness.

PrefaceThe International scientific and technical youth conference “Perspective Materials of Constructional and Medical Purpose” was held at Tomsk Polytechnic University, 26-30 November, 2018. The conference was organized by major Siberian institutions: National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science SB RAS.The Conference brought together young researchers to discuss the current issues of the development and manufacturing of construction and medical materials, improving their properties, as well as the creation of new materials based on new ideas about the nature of the behavior of a solid body under external impact.The mains topics of the conference were as follows:• Problems of materials reliability• Functional materials• Surface and coating modification• Perspective materials of new generation for biomedical applicationsMore than 180 papers of young and experienced researchers from Russia and abroad were submitted which covered the topics of the conference. 20th Russian Youth Conference on Physics of Semiconductors and Nanostructures, Opto- and Nanoelectronics

Editorial PrefaceThe 20th Russian Young Conference on Physics of Semiconductors and Nanostructures, Opto- and Nanoelectronics was held in Saint Petersburg on November 26 – 30, 2018. It was organized by Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.The program of the Conference included semiconductor technology, heterostructures with quantum wells and quantum dots, opto- and nanoelectronic devices and new materials. A large number of participants with more than 200 attendees from many regions of Russia provided a perfect platform for the valuable discussions between students and experienced scientists.Conference included two invited talks given by leading scientists devoted to actual problems and major advances in physics and technology. The keynote speakers were A.T. Burkov from Ioffe Physical Technical Institute (presentation “Thermoelectric effects and energy converters”) and K.V. Kavokin from Spin Optics Laboratory at St. Petersburg University (presentation “Spin physics: from semiconductors to birds”). Students, graduate and postgraduate students presented their results on plenary and poster sessions. The total number of accepted papers published in Russian (the official conference language) was 123. Here we publish 38 of them in English.List of Editors, Winners of the E.F. The politics of global youth participation

ABSTRACTThis article critically examines increased opportunities for youth participation in global political affairs created by the United Nations and its member states in the 2010s. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews at three global youth conferences, this study demonstrates the operationalization of participatory governance, a current mode of global politics, that seeks to engage multi-stakeholders in a seemingly more democratic and egalitarian process. It investigates how the structure and culture of participation mechanisms found in international political processes limited youth engagement. Young people expressed both dissatisfaction with what they perceived to be their inability to participate meaningfully and their desire to fulfill their human right to participation. The author argues that this reflects the construction an ideal global youth-citizen today as marked by an individual’s exercise of compulsory participation as a self-governing and responsible subject. Participation is employed as a mode of governance so that young people may instrumentally advance thier life chances against the insecurities of social risks imposed on them in the retreat of state provisions. The study underscores the need to critically examine the institutionalization of political youth agency.

Juventude brasileira em pauta: analisando as conferências e o estatuto da juventude

(analytical): In view of the situation of social vulnerability and limited visibility of youth in the Brazilian social and political contexts and its norms and legislation, the objective of this article is to discuss the process of young people’s political participation. To achieve this, a documentary analysis was carried out of the proposals approved in National Youth Conferences as well as the content of the sessions related to the rights of young people contained in the Statute for Youth. As results, the authors identified that there are specific demands from young people (political participation) as well as more encompassing demands that involve all of society (security, education, mobility and health). However, there are historical claims for recognition that are a long way from being transformed into policies to enforce rights, such as proposals to combat the extermination of black youth and greater political participation for young people.
