Social safety nets, women's economic achievements and agency in 45 countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
  • Feb 5, 2026
  • Nature human behaviour
  • Amber Peterman + 3 more

There are increasing calls for economic assistance in the form of social safety nets (SSNs) to be designed and implemented to promote women's economic inclusion and agency, contributing to closing gender disparities globally. Here we investigate the extent to which SSNs affect women's economic achievements and agency through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials implemented in low- and middle-income countries. We searched six databases utilizing search strings in English, French and Spanish through December 2024. Studies were assessed for risk of bias using an adapted version of the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool. Our sample includes 1,307 effect sizes from 93 studies, representing 218,828 women across 45 low- and middle-income countries. Using robust variance estimation meta-analysis, we show significant overall pooled effects (Hedges' g = 0.107, P < 0.001, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.085-0.129), driven by increases in economic achievements (productive work, savings, assets and expenditures) and agency (voice, autonomy and decision-making). We find significant treatment effects for unconditional cash transfers (Hedges' g = 0.128, P < 0.001, 95% CI 0.097 to 0.159), social care services (Hedges' g = 0.122, P < 0.001, 95% CI 0.071 to 0.174), asset transfers (Hedges' g = 0.115, P < 0.001, 95% CI 0.071 to 0.160) and public work programmes (Hedges' g = 0.127, P = 0.031, 95% CI 0.015 to 0.239). We find comparatively smaller effects for conditional cash transfers (Hedges' g = 0.059, P = 0.019, 95% CI 0.011 to 0.108) and found no evidence of effects for in-kind transfers. SSNs can empower women economically and socially; however, limitations and evidence gaps remain, including the need for further rigorous testing of design and operational components, the role of contextual factors and cost-benefit analysis with a gender lens.

Development of Pelawan Tourist Attractions Through Strengthening Pokdarwis in West Pangke, Karimun Regency This community service activity aims to support the development of the tourist attraction of Pelawan Beach, Karimun Regency, by strengthening the role of the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) and the participation of the local community. Pelawan Beach has natural tourism potential in the form of white sand, panoramic sea views, and sunset views, but its management is still not optimal, especially in terms of supporting facilities and promotion. The scope of this service includes community service activities based on student social internships in supporting coastal tourism destinations. The service method is implemented through social internship activities for students of the Sociology Study Program of Raja Ali Haji Maritime University, with work programs including building beach swings, wooden bridges as photo spots, creating mini parks, community empowerment socialisation, and making identity signs. The results of the activity show that the addition of simple tourism facilities and educational activities can increase the visual appeal of the destination and support social media-based tourism promotion. In addition, the socialisation carried out increased public awareness of the importance of involvement in tourism management. This activity shows that collaboration between students, Pokdarwis and the local community plays a vital role in the development of sustainable coastal tourism

  • Nadia Neimanas + 2 more

ABSTRACT This study explored the importance of accessible social work doctoral program information and the need to conduct further research on prospective PhD students to more completely meet their needs. The PhD Student Navigation System was used as a framework to complete a content analysis on publicly available information pertaining to top social work PhD programs in the United States. Results reveal a range of available information for prospective PhD students, including institutions that appear to closely guard programmatic information important in decision making for prospective students. Improving information accessibility to prospective PhD students is critical in the journey to improve representation of the social work profession, including in academia. This understudied population should be more closely examined to improve support for prospective students and those who are admitted and matriculate in these programs. Ensuring information is easily accessible may contribute to a more diverse applicant pool. As PhD programs aim to train students to be the future stewards of the profession, it is imperative that such programs are representative of the population.

  • Monica M Adams + 1 more

ABSTRACT Social workers often encounter clients experiencing food insecurity in a variety of practice settings. Food insecurity contributes to inequities in physical and mental health. Social work programs should ensure students are competent to assess and intervene appropriately when working with clients with food insecurity. We present a framework for helping students understand the complexity of food insecurity and its association with overall health and well-being. It situates food insecurity in the context of the Grand Challenge for Social Work to close the health gap with a specific focus on strengthening students’ assessment and intervention skills. We include strategies for incorporating food insecurity content into the social work curriculum in ways that enhance microlevel practice.

The development of organizations today has certainly expanded significantly, both through prosocial work programs and the culture of internal organizational interaction itself, which is increasingly progressing. This study aims to analyze the relationship between organizational culture and prosocial behavior among university students in Yogyakarta. The research method used in this study was quantitative, employing a correlational approach using the Spearman correlation technique with respondents from college students currently working in organizations in the Yogyakarta area. The results of this study indicate a relationship between prosocial behavior and organizational culture. This is evidenced by the Spearman correlation value (0.347) and a p-value of 0.000, which is categorized as a moderate relationship. These results indicate that a positive and conducive organizational culture will be more effective through a campus environment that supports cooperation and participation and can encourage students to demonstrate prosocial behaviors such as mutual assistance, cooperation, and contribution.

  • Preston R Osborn

ABSTRACT Using ecological systems theory as an investigative framework, this study examined factors associated with anti-oppressive competency levels among White social work students. The study sample comprised 186 White graduate students from master of social work programs across the midwestern United States. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were used to evaluate associations between anti-oppressive competencies and predictive factors across levels of an ecological system. Reliable predictors of anti-oppressive competencies included White empathy (B = .348, t = 5.91, p = < .001), reflective processes (B = .274, t = 3.07, p = .002), White fragility (B = -.200, t = -2.94, p = .004), White fear (B = -.163, t = -1.96, p = .052), and diversity activities engagement (B = .143, t = -2.64, p = .009). This study helps to illuminate a complex variety of factors associated with anti-oppressive competency levels among White social work students. Findings suggest the importance of both internal factors, including reflective processes and White racial affect, and external factors, including multicultural experiences and diversity activities engagement support. Professional practice and policy implications are discussed for advancing anti-oppressive capacities among students and practitioners.

The prospective bride and groom are strategic targets for health improvement during the preconception period. Public awareness of preconception health is still low. Counseling, information, and education are highly needed by prospective brides and grooms, especially as they prepare for a healthy pregnancy. The research method was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data was collected through interviews using a structured interview guide. The data was validated using data triangulation. Based on input indicators, the administrative staff needed includes midwives, doctors, laboratory analysts, health promotion personnel, and village heads/village staff. HRM competencies include knowledge, the premarital screening process, SOPs, and screening fees. The performance of program implementers is evaluated by the reproductive health program holders, cluster 2 managers, coordinating midwives, and health center heads. The source of funds comes from the State Budget and Regional Budgets, including the implementation of the premarital screening program. The target group is very supportive of the screening program. Based on process indicators, there are no supervision procedures yet. The planning SOP is approved by the head of the health center. The organization follows the SOP, which aligns with the work program in Cluster 2. The coverage of the premarital screening program is measured through reporting from the Kescatin application. Based on output indicators, whether the premarital screening program requirements have been met or not is only assessed based on the health certificates issued by the Puskesmas for the prospective bride and groom. It is hoped that the Puskesmas (Community Health Centers) will need to improve the quality of the premarital screening program by arranging a strategic plan to enhance the performance of program implementers and facilities and by collaborating with various sectors to achieve the set targets and goals.

Saudi Clinical Practice Guideline for the Assessment and Management of Low Back Pain and Sciatica in Adults.
  • Jan 8, 2026
  • Journal of clinical medicine
  • Mai Aldera + 16 more

Background/Objectives: Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability in Saudi Arabia and contributes substantially to healthcare utilisation, reduced quality of life, and lost productivity. This guideline provides nationally standardised, evidence-based recommendations for the assessment and management of non-specific LBP and sciatica in adults, adapted to the clinical and health-system context in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A multidisciplinary Task Force developed the guideline using the GRADE ADOLOPMENT approach, using NICE guideline NG59 as the primary evidence source. One additional clinical question was formulated to address pain neuroscience education, informed by a relevant systematic review. Update literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library (2016-2022). The evidence was appraised using GRADE, and recommendations were formulated through structured Evidence-to-Decision deliberations and consensus voting. Results: The Task Force addressed eleven clinical questions in this guideline. Strong recommendations were provided for the use of validated risk assessment tools (very low certainty of evidence) and stratified management (moderate certainty of evidence). Conditional recommendations were made for indications for imaging, pharmacological treatment for sciatica, psychological interventions, multidisciplinary return to work programmes, epidural injections, prognostic value of image-concordant pathology, spinal decompression, radiofrequency denervation, and pain neuroscience education, with certainty of evidence ranging from very low to low. Conclusions: The findings indicate that management of non-specific LBP and sciatica in Saudi Arabia should be guided by clinical assessment, with restricted use of imaging, careful selection of pharmacological treatments, and appropriate use of psychological, multidisciplinary, and procedural interventions.

Financing Community Mental Health Worker Programs in the United States: Three Paths Forward.
  • Jan 5, 2026
  • Community mental health journal
  • Jacob Meyerson + 2 more

The United States is in need of novel solutions to deliver mental health care, especially in the wake of inadequate community health financing following deinstitutionalization. The community mental health work model, in which lay providers deliver basic mental health care and refer to higher levels of care as needed, is proven internationally and has started to be implemented within the United States. Securing sustainable financing for the expansion of these programs remains a challenge. Here, we discuss three avenues for advancing the funding of United States based community mental health work programs. First, by implementing a volunteer model similar to that which has been done internationally; second, by bolstering pre-existing U.S. healthcare funding mechanisms; third, by pursuing a novel collaborative financing mechanism that is rooted in public good economics.

The vision for virtual representation of the planet Earth through a highly accurate, detailed, and interactive model is a very real realization of the concept of a “digital twin of the Earth” (DTE). The purpose of creating this digital model is to better understand and manage the complex global ecosystem, which in turn implies a future shift towards more sustainable future. The potential for building a DTE is a result of advances in geospatial technologies, which enable the processing of huge amounts of data and using complex algorithms for analysis and visualization. Various initiatives and projects related to the creation of this digital twin are currently being developed and implemented. Its full implementation requires going through many different stages, as this goal represents a diverse multifaceted process. This paper analyzes current projects, work programs, possible applications, and perspectives for future development of the digital twin of the Earth, which allows the formulation of basic requirements regarding the structure of the database, the volume of information and the types of data stored, determined by algorithms used for processing, as well as the characteristics of the data.

The Mosque Prosperity Agency (BKM) is a mosque management institution that plays a strategic role in promoting the functions of houses of worship, both in terms of worship, social aspects, and community empowerment. This study aims to review the performance of BKM from the perspective of Islamic organisational management, emphasising the principles of trust, consultation (syura), justice, and accountability. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques including interviews, observation, and documentation studies at several mosques managed by BKM. Data analysis was conducted using an Islamic organisational management approach that included planning, organising, actuating, and controlling, as well as being linked to sharia values. The results of the study show that most BKM have attempted to apply modern management principles, such as work programme preparation, financial management, and organisational structure management. However, its implementation still faces obstacles in the form of a lack of professionalism, weak transparency, and limited human resource capacity. The Islamic organisational management perspective provides a normative framework that can strengthen BKM institutional practices, particularly in maintaining trust, increasing congregational participation through deliberation, and upholding justice in the distribution of mosque activities. This study concludes that the effectiveness of BKM is not only determined by its administrative structure and system, but also by the extent to which Islamic values are internalised in every managerial process. Thus, this study recommends strengthening the Islamic value-based managerial capacity of BKM administrators so that mosques can become centres of worship, education, and sustainable community empowerment
