Wireless technology applied to GIS

At present, there is a growing interest in wireless applications, due to the fact that the technology begins to support them at reasonable costs. In this paper, we present the technology currently available for use in wireless environments, focusing on Geographic Information Systems. As an example, we present a newly developed platform for the commercialization of advanced geographical information services for use in portable devices. This platform uses available mobile telephone networks and wireless local area networks, but it is completely scalable to new technologies such as third generation mobile networks. Users access the service using a vector map player that runs on a Personal Digital Assistant with wireless access facilities and a Global Positioning System receiver. Before accessing the information, the player will request authorization from the server and download the requested map from it, if necessary. The platform also includes a system for improving Global Positioning System localization with the Real Time Differential Global Positioning System, which uses short GSM messages as the transmission medium.

When the hospital information system was updated in Toyonaka Municipal Hospital in January 2003, the dispensing support system, a subsystem of the existing hospital information system, was restructured. The new dispensing support system, which is able to save prescriptions in electronic media (Electronic Prescription Saving System), was developed to enhance patient safety. The Electronic Prescription Saving System has various safety management functions including those for preventing dispensing mistakes, dispensing investigation support, and collection of information on dispensing mistakes. The function for preventing dispensing mistakes incorporates a dispensing check system, which uses a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) equipped with a wireless LAN facility and a bar code reader, and a medicine filling check system, which were specially developed for the prevention of mistakes.We are confident that the new dispensing support system will be useful in assuring patient safety and help tremendously in achieving our safety management goal of “zero errors” in the future.

Resource Sharing: Wireless Telecommunications Site Lease Rates

“Resource sharing” refers to projects that use public right-of-way for telecommunications facilities and that result in some form of compensation to the public agency. The facilities most often installed are transmitter antennas supported on aboveground structures (wireless facilities) or buried fiber-optic cable. Research indicates that fewer than 10 state departments of transportation (DOTs) are leasing or licensing wireless sites to telecommunication companies, but many more states desire data concerning the revenue that they might receive from such installations. The current range of fees that state DOTs receive from the telecommunications companies for the wireless sites, and the fees that the DOTs receive from other companies (colocators) that place their facilities on a structure owned by a first locator, are described. The typical site locations, the group (DOT versus company) that identifies lease sites, typical support structures for the antennas, the manner in which the revenue may be used in the various states, and legal difficulties associated with wireless resource sharing are also described.

The EMC (Electro-magnetic compatibility) includes EMI (Electro-magnetic Interference) and electro-magnetic immunity. The EMI standards for data processing equipment is the CISPR 22 issued by the IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission). Many nations are using this standard to prevent the radio equipment, TV and wireless facilities from the interference. The immunity standard is CISPR 24. The manufacturer shall voluntarily use the immunity standard to prevent the equipment from malfunctions. In Europe, the EMC Directive uses this standard. The focal point of EMC design has been moved from the shielding to the circuits design. The most importance is the control of impedance. The simulation software is important for an efficient design. Therefore, we have developed the software so called ACCUFIELD. Data processing equipment requires new materials to correspond the increase of processor speed. The flexible EM absorbing rubber sheet is being expected as an EMC material. We forecast that the recycable conductive plastics and the steel sheet with low surface-resistance will be required as the cabinet material in the future.

Acoustics, electroacoustics, and electronics in the ATLAPA Trade Show and Convention Center

The ATLAPA Trade Show and Convention Center now under construction in Panama City is a twenty-million dollar facility incorporating a 3000 seat multi-purpose auditorium, little theatre, general purpose exhibit area, meeting rooms, rehearsal spaces, etc. Acoustical design features and electroacoustic systems will be breifly described. Attention will be concentrated on (a) acoustical characteristics of the auditorium and exhibit hall in relation to usage as well as architectural and cultural constraints, (b) interrelated variable acoustics and sound reinforcement facilities in the main auditorium, (c) performance requirements for a multiple-use sound installation in the exhibit area, and (d) specially designed six-channel wireless translation facilities available for simultaneous use in nine contiguous areas.
