Fanfiction: “nova” ferramenta de leitura e escrita para o ensino de língua materna no ensino básico

In this article we analyze processes of reading and writing among adolescents. The analysis material is fanfiction – a current discursive genre, preferably found in digital media such as blogs, social networking sites and WEB 2.0. Fanfictions are textual productions based on an established work of fiction, where fans, readers of these fictions, become co-authors of endless possibilities for continuation of the original work through collaborative writing. Here, we analyze the fanfiction “Blue Moon,” a continuation of the literary work “Twilight Saga”, a series of four books by British writer Stephanie Meyer. Maingueneau states that these teenagers can constitute true discourse communities through this reading and writing process. Similarly, the Curriculum Proposal of Sao Paulo asserts that, when sharing the same discourses, students encourage reading and writing skills. Theoretically, this paper is grounded on French Discourse Analysis and on Michel Foucault’s concept of Self-writing. The study illustrates how teenagers talk about themselves through fanfiction writing. Keywords: fanfiction, reading and writing, discourse community, written self.

The Case for Alternative Social Media

What are “alternative social media”? How can we distinguish alternative social media from mainstream social media? Why are social media alternatives important? How do they work? Why do people make them? What do they tell us about contemporary corporate social media and its related phenomena: surveillance, privacy, power, self-expression, and sociality? This essay answers these questions by theorizing alternative social media. The empirical data for this alternative social media theory are drawn from previous work on alternative sites such as Diaspora, rstat.us, Twister, GNU social, and the Dark Web Social Network. These cases are used to build a generalized conceptual framework. However, this article does not solely theorize from these examples, but rather seeks to contextualize and historicize alternative social media theory within larger bodies of work. In addition to generalization from examples, the theory is informed by two threads. The first thread is the work of alternative media scholars such as Nick Couldry, Chris Atton, and Clemencia Rodriguez, who have done the historical and theoretical work to define alternative media. The second thread is a synthesis of works exploring the technical side of contemporary media, coming from new fields such as software studies. The threads and empirical analyses of sites such as Diaspora, Quitter, and rstat.us are combined into a theoretical matrix that can account for the processes and technical infrastructures that comprise social media alternatives and explain why they are distinct from sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google, as well as why they are important.

A Comparative Legal Analysis of Online Defamation in Malaysia, Singapore and the United Kingdom

The rapid development and emergence of various forms of Internet based publications, which include social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter etc), web logs (blogs), chat groups, newsgroups and many others, have revolutionized the communication and of information in this modern era. Attributed with borderless nature and geographical independence, these online platforms have enabled Internet users to easily disseminate any kinds of information and news to the public at large. This is in stark contrast with the traditional print and broadcast media whereby their reach and influence are limited by territorial boundaries and localities. Unfortunately, the ability of these online channels to have a global reach has attracted a large number of unscrupulous users to disseminate defamatory materials in the cyber world. And since cases of online defamation are reportedly on the rise in Malaysia, the study attempts to examine the effectiveness of the existing laws in regulating such a threat to the society. In relation thereof, this study will analyze the provisions of the Malaysian Defamation Act 1957 and relevant decided cases on this matter. Further, a comparative analysis with the position in Singapore and the United Kingdom will be made since Malaysia is also a Commonwealth nation and the comparative method will enable this study to explore a range of alternative approaches that can be used as a basis for law reform in Malaysia.

Power/freedom on the dark web: A digital ethnography of the Dark Web Social Network

This essay is an early ethnographic exploration of the Dark Web Social Network (DWSN), a social networking site only accessible to Web browsers equipped with The Onion Router. The central claim of this essay is that the DWSN is an experiment in power/freedom, an attempt to simultaneously trace, deploy, and overcome the historical conditions in which it finds itself: the generic constraints and affordances of social networking as they have been developed over the past decade by Facebook and Twitter, and the ideological constraints and affordances of public perceptions of the dark web, which hold that the dark web is useful for both taboo activities and freedom from state oppression. I trace the DWSN’s experiment with power/freedom through three practices: anonymous/social networking, the banning of child pornography, and the productive aspects of techno-elitism. I then use these practices to specify particular forms of power/freedom on the DWSN.

A window into Eve Online

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study Eve Online. Most people use their computers to surf the Web, check e-mails, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or various other social networking sites. Although computer gaming has been around for years, only in the past 10-15 years has it really taken off as a primary use for a desktop. Design/methodology/approach – Individuals use computers as a tool, to relax and get away and, in the case of Massive Multilayer Online games (MMOs), they use computers as a gateway to a virtual world. MMOs are fairly new to the gaming world, yet the concept is simple. Combine all the game players and throw them into a single intractable game, where they can deal with other players on a daily basis, essentially creating a metaverse. Findings – Eve Online is unlike any MMO out there on the market today. Created by the company CCP that is based in Iceland, Eve Online is the world’s only true sandbox game. A sandbox game is a game that allows the player to do whatever they want with no or few restrictions. Originality/value – Everyone that plays Eve Online is put on a single server called Tranquility. However, there is a separate server for people who play in the People’s Republic of China because of legal reasons imposed by the government. We examine Eve Online and make suggestions for future research to examine country differences with China.

Identification of Season-Dependent Sightseeing Spots Based on Metadata-Derived Features and Image Processing

Sharing traveling experience and photos on Social Network Service or Web albums is more and more popular recently. Good sightseeing photos in specific situation such as sunset and spring season can impress tourists well, and be clues for them to consider where and when to visit for sightseeing. Regarding situations to be identified, this paper focuses on season. Compared with situations relating with weather and time of day (e.g., sunrise/sunset), whether or not different seasons have different scenery depends on sightseeing spots. Therefore, classifying sightseeing spots into season-dependent/independent is required as preprocessing for season-based classification of sightseeing photos. This paper proposes a hybrid approach for identifying season-dependent sightseeing spots, of which the first phase applies machine learning with statistical features of sightseeing photos obtained from metadata. In order to improve precision, the second phase applies color-based classification to spots identified as season-dependent in the first phase. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Transnationalism, Education and Slovenian Diaspora: Exploring Online Educational Resources for Slovenian Emigrants and Their Descendants

The article addresses the use of online communication technologies for educational purposes by Slovenian emigrants and their descendants. Technologies such as web-classes, forums, blogs and social networks enable them to maintain transnational links with the homeland, especially in terms of learning the language, and exploring, preserving and negotiating cultural practices. The article builds on the extensive content analysis of web pages, portals and social network sites where they interact to discuss the variety of themes connected with Slovenian culture. It is argued that shared meanings are not necessarily communicated and negotiated within the frame of a single language, and that learning about cultural heritage and contemporary lifestyles through discussions on social networks is an efficient and popular mode of informal learning.

Campaign Agenda-Building Online: The Effects of Online Information Source and Interactivity on Affective Evaluations and the Salience of the Election

ABSTRACT The 2 × 3 experimental design study was conducted with 300 undergraduate participants during Florida's 2010 gubernatorial election. Participants were randomly assigned to one of six different conditions based on type of online site (campaign Web site vs. social network sites) and level of interactivity (user-to-system, user-to-document, and user-to-user), and emotional and evaluative responses to online campaign information were examined. Interaction effects in one campaign notwithstanding, the emotions and evaluations elicited by the other campaign were positively associated with public agenda-building. Thus, those responding favorably to the winner's campaign considered the election more important and were more likely to vote.

On meeting deadlines in datacenter networks

Datacenters have become increasingly important to host a diverse range of cloud applications with mixed workloads. Traditional applications hosted by datacenters are throughput-oriented without delay requirements, but newer generations of cloud applications, such as web search, recommendations, and social networking, typically employ a tree-based Partition-Aggregate structure, which may incur bursts of traffic. As a result, flows in these applications have stringent latency requirements, i.e., flow deadlines need to be met in order to achieve a satisfactory user experience. To meet these flow deadlines, research efforts in the recent literature have attempted to redesign flow and congestion control protocols that are specific to datacenter networks. In this paper, we focus on the new array of deadline-sensitive flow control protocols, thoroughly investigate their underlying design principles, analyze the evolution of their designs, and evaluate the tradeoffs involved in their design choices.

“Who am I?”

In this paper we study the connection between the use of evaluative language and the building of both personal and social identities, from the perspective of Dynamical System Theory. We primarily discuss two issues: 1) The use of evaluation (in the sense given to the term by Alba-Juez and Thompson (forthcoming)) as a means to the construction of both individual and group identities, thus exploring how the connection between linguistic choices and social identities is shaped by interactional needs for stancetaking. In order to illustrate this connection, we examine examples of the use of evaluative language in a web social network, and we analyze some of the discourse elements showing ways of positioning that act as catalysts for the emergence of a multifactorial dynamic system of identities. 2) The consideration of Dynamical System Theory (DST) as a theoretical framework for the modeling of language and identity. Although originally a mathematical theory, DST has been adopted by cognitive science as a valid framework for the study of cognitive phenomena, on the grounds that natural cognition is a dynamical phenomenon. Within the realm of (socio) linguistics and pragmatics, this study is to a certain degree in line with some recent studies such as Gibbs (2010), Geeraerts, Kristiansen and Peirsman (2010), or Moreno Fernández (2012). Thus, we herein focus on how linguistic evaluation intervenes in the intricate dynamical system of identity, and even though we do not engage in complex mathematical disquisition, we argue that the idea and philosophical foundation underlying DST can lead us towards the ‘integration’ of the complex equation of identity construction, and that consequently the field has great potential for further research.

Mining Algorithm of Dynamic Relationship Communities in Social Network

For the certainty or uncertainty relation in Web social networks, the concept of the relationship communities of a given threshold is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the set pair social networks are built by set pair analysis method, and the strength of relationship between any nodes is greater than the given threshold  ; secondly, the mining algorithms of dynamic  relationship community are designed through the dynamic nature of Web social networks, finally, through the collection of the DBLP data set to make extraction, classification, community mining and relationship between analysis and other experiments. The results show that the algorithm is high efficiency. Also demonstrate the excavation of  relation community can better reflect the dynamic of the community and for their potential relationship to further carry out excavation.

Internet of Things (IoT): A vision, architectural elements, and future directions

Ubiquitous sensing enabled by Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technologies cuts across many areas of modern day living. This offers the ability to measure, infer and understand environmental indicators, from delicate ecologies and natural resources to urban environments. The proliferation of these devices in a communicating–actuating network creates the Internet of Things (IoT), wherein sensors and actuators blend seamlessly with the environment around us, and the information is shared across platforms in order to develop a common operating picture (COP). Fueled by the recent adaptation of a variety of enabling wireless technologies such as RFID tags and embedded sensor and actuator nodes, the IoT has stepped out of its infancy and is the next revolutionary technology in transforming the Internet into a fully integrated Future Internet. As we move from www (static pages web) to web2 (social networking web) to web3 (ubiquitous computing web), the need for data-on-demand using sophisticated intuitive queries increases significantly. This paper presents a Cloud centric vision for worldwide implementation of Internet of Things. The key enabling technologies and application domains that are likely to drive IoT research in the near future are discussed. A Cloud implementation using Aneka, which is based on interaction of private and public Clouds is presented. We conclude our IoT vision by expanding on the need for convergence of WSN, the Internet and distributed computing directed at technological research community.

Using social media tools for enhancing student-institution interaction. A study at an Indian distance learning institute

This study aims to explore the benefits of enhanced interaction amongst the students and institutions in the field of management education via distance education. Surveying students enrolled in the online mode courses at the institute of management technology - centre for distance learning (IMT–CDL), (N = 109), the study is able to identify the needs of the students, the benefits of enhanced levels of interaction and also helps to determine the effectiveness of the social networking (web)site (SNS)–based tools currently in use. The results show positive traction in the younger section of the population for using the various SNSs available and Facebook and Google Groups are among the best tools whereas Twitter is not much liked by the respondents for this purpose. Improvements in traction, familiarity and utilisation would go a long way in enhancing the interaction levels.

Detecting Linkedin Spammers and its Spam Nets

Spam is one of the main problems of the WWW. Many studies exist about characterising and detecting several types of Spam (mainly Web Spam, Email Spam, Forum/Blob Spam and Social Networking Spam). Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, there are no studies about the detection of Spam in Linkedin. In this article, we propose a method for detecting Spammers and Spam nets in the Linkedin social network. As there are no public or private Linkedin datasets in the state of the art, we have manually built a dataset of real Linkedin users, classifying them as Spammers or legitimate users. The proposed method for detecting Linkedin Spammers consists of a set of new heuristics and their combinations using a kNN classifier. Moreover, we proposed a method for detecting Spam nets (fake companies) in Linkedin, based on the idea that the profiles of these companies share content similarities. We have found that the proposed methods were very effective. We achieved an F-Measure of 0.971 and an AUC close to 1 in the detection of Spammer profiles, and in the detection of Spam nets, we have obtained an F-Measure of 1.

How Do Companies Achieve Their Marketing Goals With Social Networks?

This work examines the role of social network sites as a tool used by companies to achieve marketing goals. As known from the main business literature, the social network represents one of the most important instrument to improve the company fame by strengthening the affection of customers to the brand. For this reason, some companies use these tools to build relations and contacts with customers all over the world. The population of social networks users is made, for the most parts, of youngsters (people belonging to the 13-30 years old cluster). In the last years, with the social web networking, social communication lost the exclusive social meaning and social network sites become strategic instruments for the construction of powerful relations that connect people with people and people with firms. This work is aimed at clarifying the genesis and the evolution of the relations between companies and potential customers, focusing on the tools used by the firm to achieve their marketing goals through social network sites (SNSs). First of all, the work proposes the recognition of some studies about the origin of web social network and their links with marketing strategies. Secondly, it considers marketing goals achieved from any companies through social networking with a particular focus on advertising through web social networking.

The role of social networking web sites in influencing residency decisions.

Social networking Web sites such as Facebook have grown rapidly in popularity. It is unknown how such sites affect the ways in which medical trainees investigate and interact with graduate medical education (GME) programs. To evaluate the use of social networking Web sites as a means for osteopathic medical students, interns, residents, and fellows to interact with GME programs and report the degree to which that interaction impacts a medical trainee's choice of GME program. An anonymous, 10-item electronic survey on social networking Web sites was e-mailed to osteopathic medical student, intern, resident, and fellow members of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. The weighted least squares test and the Fisher exact test were used for data analysis. A total of 9606 surveys were distributed, and 992 (10%) were completed. Nine hundred twenty-eight (93%) of the respondents used social networking Web sites, with the most popular services being Facebook (891 [90%]; P=.03), the Student Doctor Network (278 [28%]), and LinkedIn (89 [9%]; P=.03). Three hundred fifty-three respondents (36%; P=.52) were connected with a professional organization and 673 (68%; P=.73) used social networking Web sites for job searching related to GME programs or postresidency employment. Within the population of 497 third-, fourth-, and fifth-year osteopathic medical students, 136 (27%) reported gleaning information about programs through social networking Web sites (P=.01). Within the total population, 100 of 992 (10%) reported that this information influenced their decisions (P=.07). Of note, 144 (14%) of the total 992 respondents reported that the programs they applied to did not have any presence on social networking Web sites (P=.05). Our results indicate that social networking Web sites have a present and growing influence on how osteopathic medical students, interns, residents, and fellows learn about and select a GME program.

Internet-Based Social Networking and Its Role in the Evolution of Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency

The Internet is being seen as a growing resource for health-related information for a large number of patients. It is undeniable that its widespread presence has led to the growth of awareness that chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) as an entity that may contribute to the symptoms experienced by patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Social networking and file-sharing Web sites have brought patients with MS together from all over the world and have facilitated the distribution of personal experiences and information derived from medical research as it relates to CCSVI. As a result, there has been an accelerated growth in the number of patients seeking treatment for this syndrome in light of the possibility that it may improve their present condition. This article will review this phenomenon, the Internet-based resources available to MS patients seeking information about CCSVI, and the responsibilities of physicians as they participate in these online discussions.

Designing for Social Engagement in Online Social Networks Using Communities-of-Practice Theory and Cognitive Work Analysis

New social networking and social web tools are becoming available and are easing the process of customizing online social environments for enterprises. With these developments, core design efforts have been extending beyond usability for individual users and are beginning to include notions of sociability for the engagement of communities of users. In an effort to make it easier to design for social engagement in an online social environment, the authors developed a domain-community model based on the communities-of-practice concept and the work domain analysis used in cognitive work analysis. Through a case study of University-Community Partnerships for Social Action Research, an international development leadership community of practice, the authors illustrate how the domain-community model could be used to design web components of an online social environment that integrate internal issues of social engagement and external issues of domain effectiveness. It is expected that this model can provide a basis for designers of online communities to more systematically account for social phenomena of collective efforts in a given work domain.
