Water management scheme based on prioritized deep deterministic policy gradient for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

AbstractTo effectively tackle the intricate and dynamic challenges encountered in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), this paper introduces a model-free reinforcement learning approach to address its water management issue. Recognizing the limitations of conventional reinforcement learning methods such as Q-learning in handling the continuous actions and nonlinearity inherent in PEMFCs water management, we propose a prioritized deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method. This method, rooted in the Actor-Critic framework, leverages double neural networks and prioritized experience replay to enable adaptive water management and balance. Additionally, we establish a PEMFCs water management platform and implement the prioritized DDPG method using "Tianshou", a modularized Python library for deep reinforcement learning. Through experimentation, the effectiveness of our proposed method is verified. This study contributes to advancing the understanding and management of water dynamics in PEMFCs, offering a promising avenue for enhancing their performance and reliability.

Automatic SWMM Parameter Calibration Method Based on the Differential Evolution and Bayesian Optimization Algorithm

In response to the low accuracy exhibited by the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM), we propose an enhanced Differential Evolution and Bayesian Optimization Algorithm (DE-BOA). This algorithm integrates the global search capability of the differential evolution algorithm with the local search capability of the Bayesian optimization algorithm, which enables a more comprehensive exploration of the vector solution space. A comparative analysis of various types of rainfall events is conducted. For model calibration and validation, a drainage subzone in Jinshazhou, Guangzhou City, is selected as the research subject. In total, 20 specific rainfall events are selected, and the DE-BOA algorithm outperforms the manual calibration, the differential evolution algorithm, and the Bayesian optimization algorithm regarding model calibration accuracy. Furthermore, the DE-BOA algorithm exhibits robust adaptability to rainfall events characterized by multiple peaks and higher precipitation levels, with the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient values surpassing 0.90. This study’s findings could hold significant reference value for dynamically updating model parameters, thereby enhancing the model simulation performance and improving the accuracy of the urban intelligent water management platform.

EEWMP: An IoT-Based Energy-Efficient Water Management Platform for Smart Irrigation

Precision agriculture is now essential in today’s world, especially for countries with limited water resources, fertile land, and enormous population. Smart irrigation systems can help countries efficiently utilize fresh water and use the excess water for barren lands. Smart water management platform (SWAMP) is an IoT-based smart irrigation project designed for efficient freshwater utilization in agriculture. The primary aim of SWAMP is to auto manage water reserves, distribution, and consumption of various levels, avoid over-irrigation and under-irrigation problems, and auto manage time to maximize production. This research proposed an energy-efficient water management platform (EEWMP), an improved version of SWAMP. EEWMP is an IoT-based smart irrigation system that uses field-deployed sensors, sinks, fusion centres, and open-source clouds. Both models’ performance is evaluated in energy consumption, network stability period, packet sent to destination, and packet delivery ratio. The experimental results show that EEWMP consumes 30% less energy and increases network stability twice than SWAMP. EEWMP can be used in different irrigation models such as drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, surface irrigation, and lateral move irrigation with subtle alterations. Moreover, it can also be used in small farms of third-world countries with their existing communication infrastructures such as 2G or 3G.

Based on the full deployment of the government’s digital transformation work, and the needs of “smart water conservancy” construction, Zhejiang Province has launched the construction of a water management platform. By constructing a unified water conservancy data warehouse across the province, it solves the problem of the isolation of various types of information resources in the digital transformation of water conservancy, and realizes the collection, exchange and sharing of water conservancy data resources; By constructing a unified water resources comprehensive application portal, a decentralized, independent and single business system is integrated to realize cross department, cross system, cross region and cross level business collaborative processing. Smart Water Management Platform: IoT-Based Precision Irrigation for Agriculture.

The smart management of freshwater for precision irrigation in agriculture is essential for increasing crop yield and decreasing costs, while contributing to environmental sustainability. The intense use of technologies offers a means for providing the exact amount of water needed by plants. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the natural choice for smart water management applications, even though the integration of different technologies required for making it work seamlessly in practice is still not fully accomplished. The SWAMP project develops an IoT-based smart water management platform for precision irrigation in agriculture with a hands-on approach based on four pilots in Brazil and Europe. This paper presents the SWAMP architecture, platform, and system deployments that highlight the replicability of the platform, and, as scalability is a major concern for IoT applications, it includes a performance analysis of FIWARE components used in the Platform. Results show that it is able to provide adequate performance for the SWAMP pilots, but requires specially designed configurations and the re-engineering of some components to provide higher scalability using less computational resources.

Countermeasure Analysis on Promoting Drinking Water Safety in Shanshan County, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China

In recent years, China has paid an increasing amount of attention to improving urban and rural drinking water safety, an important aspect of building a healthy and stable society. This study analyzed countermeasures to promote drinking water safety in Turpan City of Shanshan County, in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region. First, we considered the current state of drinking water safety in Shanshan, including issues such as pollution, outdated water treatment technologies, leakage in the water supply pipe network, insufficient emergency management capability in urban areas, and low water supply guarantee rates in rural areas due to poor construction standards. Second, the quantity of guaranteed water resources was estimated; on this basis, an ideal distribution of regional water plants and water supply network needs for the optimal allocation of water resources is suggested. Third, a water purification program was developed to solve untreated water quality problems, including centralized and decentralized water quality treatments alongside intelligent water flow control processes. Water resource conservation and risk control measures are also proposed in order to promote the security of drinking water; equipment updates, and the establishment of an intelligent water management platform are also suggested.

River Basin Multi-Stakeholder Platforms: the practice of ‘good water governance' in Afghanistan

The article describes local realities and contextual circumstances in Afghanistan which are infuencing cooperation on water sharing during dry years. The contribution assesses the performance of multi-stakeholder platforms for water management as a ‘good' water governance model promoted by the European Union in Afghanistan's post-civil war environment. Based on interviews with key stakeholders held in 2011-12, and using criteria derived from (a) the new Afghanistan Water Law and (b) MSP literature, especially Verhallen, Warner, and Santbergen (2007), we scrutinize water management and confict resolution in two sub-basins in North Afghanistan, the Lower Kunduz and the Taloqan, singled out as pilots for the new model, in two very dry years: 2008 and 2011.The article concludes that there is a predictable implementation gap between models and practices. It highlights that 7 years after the introduction of good governance models, water allocation is still driven by what may appear as a darker side of governance. The article questions whether it actually is for the worst, including when it comes to limiting inequity in water access and preventing conficts.
