Wastewater-based intestinal protozoa monitoring in Shanghai, China.

Intestinal protozoa Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi have been implicated in serious waterborne outbreaks worldwide. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a promising approach for evaluating the disease prevalence in a catchment population in that it monitors the contamination level of the intestinal pathogens in wastewater. We collected 48 urban wastewater samples (24 from influents and 24 from effluents) from the Yangpu Wastewater Treatment Plant (YPWTP) in Shanghai, China. We identified Cryptosporidium spp., G. duodenalis, and E. bieneusi by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. Cryptosporidium hominis and subtype IdA14 were identified in two samples by analyzing the sequences of small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) and 60-kDa glycoprotein (gp60) genes, respectively. The G. duodenalis sub-assemblage AII (n = 8) and assemblage C (n = 4) in 12 samples were determined by analyzing triosephosphate isomerase (tpi) gene sequences. The E. bieneusi genotype A was identified in one sample by analyzing the sequence of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rRNA gene. These findings suggest that improving wastewater treatment and monitoring the virility of pathogens in effluents is critical. We observed similar prevalence and genotypes/subtypes of the three intestinal protozoa in our wastewater samples as those reported in previous studies, providing evidence that WBE can be used as an effective epidemic management tool.IMPORTANCECryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi are common intestinal protozoa causing diarrhea. The infective oocysts, cysts, and spores released in feces can survive in different environments, including multiple types of water bodies. Humans can acquire these intestinal protozoan infections via the fecal-oral route as in waterborne transmission. Wastewater-based epidemiology can rapidly and reliably detect and monitor the emergence and spread of waterborne diseases. We detected Cryptosporidium spp., G. duodenalis, and E. bieneusi in a wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai, China, reflecting the occurrence and genetic characterizations of the three intestinal pathogens from community members served by the wastewater treatment plant.

Complete long-term monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions from a full-scale industrial wastewater treatment plant with different cover configurations

The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), consisting mainly of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), have been constantly increasing and become a non-negligible contributor towards carbon neutrality. The precise evaluation of plant-specific GHG emissions, however, remains challenging. The current assessment approach is based on the product of influent load and emission factor (EF), of which the latter is quite often a single value with huge uncertainty. In particular, the latest default Tier 1 value of N2O EF, 0.016 ± 0.012 kgN2O–N kgTN−1, is estimated based on the measurement of 30 municipal WWTPs only, without involving any industrial wastewater. Therefore, to resolve the pattern of GHG emissions from industrial WWTPs, this work conducted a 14-month monitoring campaign covering all the process units at a full-scale industrial WWTP in Shanghai, China. The total CH4 and N2O emissions from the whole plant were, on average, 447.7 ± 224.5 kgCO2-eq d−1 and 1605.3 ± 2491.0 kgCO2-eq d−1, respectively, exhibiting a 5.2- or 3.9-times more significant deviation than the influent loads of chemical oxygen demand (COD) or total nitrogen (TN). The resulting EFs, 0.00072 kgCH4 kgCOD−1 and 0.00211 kgN2O–N kgTN−1, were just 0.36% of the IPCC recommended value for CH4, and 13.2% for N2O. Besides, the parallel anoxic-oxic (A/O) lines of this industrial WWTP were covered in two configurations, allowing the comparison of GHG emissions from different odor control setup. Unit-specific analysis showed that the replacement of enclosed A/open O with enclosed A/O reduced the CH4 EF by three times, from 0.00159 to 0.00051 kgCH4 kgCOD−1, and dramatically decreased the N2O EF by an order of magnitude, from 0.00376 to 0.00032 kgN2O–N kgTN−1, which was among the lowest of all full-scale WWTPs.

The evaluation of GHG emissions from Shanghai municipal wastewater treatment plants based on IPCC and operational data integrated methods (ODIM)

Due to the rapid wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) development and the China's 2060 goal of carbon neutrality, the contribution of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from WWTPs should not be overlooked. Thus, the GHG accounting method, featured with site-specific and real operation data targeting city-level WWTPs, is scientifically and pragmatically called for. In this paper, we compared IPCC (IPCC 2006 and IPCC 2019), optimized IPCC and operational data integrated methods (ODIM) for the direct N2O and CH4 emissions for total 50 WWTPs in Shanghai. Data for all WWTPs were collected for ODIM and indirect GHG emissions evaluation, covering frequently used wastewater treatment processes in China such as anaerobic anoxic oxic, oxidation ditch, sequencing batch reactor, anoxic oxic, biofilm and membrane bio-reactor. The factors affecting the total GHG emissions intensity were also analyzed. The results showed that, in comparison with IPCC 2019, IPCC 2006 underestimated both direct N2O and CH4 emissions for a total percentage of 87%. What's more, IPCC 2019 overestimated by a percentage of 355% compared to ODIM due to the general default values. ODIM considered the significant differences in emission factor values of specific treatment process, making use of the local operational data to achieve more accurate city-level estimation with direct GHG emissions of 243,320 tCO2-eq in 2016. While indirect emissions were 511,851 tCO2-eq, accounting for 68% of total direct and indirect emissions. Average GHGs emission intensity for Shanghai WWTPs was evaluated as 0.290 kgCO2-eq/m3 while the specific WWTP intensity varied between 0.268 and 0.738 kgCO2-eq/m3. In detail, WWTPs with AAO process, large-scale (>100 k m3/day), high load rate (80%–100%), low theoretical oxygen consumption (0.2– 0.4 kgO2/t), influent COD of 150– 250 mg/L, NH3-N of 15– 25 mg/L and discharge limits B demonstrated lower amounts of total GHG emissions than other WWTPs. Shanghai cases in this study provided a reference for future city-level WWTPs GHG management in China.

Contribution of hospitals to the occurrence of enteric protists in urban wastewater.

We assessed the potential contribution of hospitals to contaminations of wastewater by enteric protists, including Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi in raw wastewater. Wastewater samples were collected from storage tanks in two hospitals and one associated wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai, China, from March to November 2009. Enteric pathogens were detected and identified using PCR and DNA sequencing techniques. Among a total of 164 samples analyzed, 31 (18.9%), 45 (27.4%), and 122 (74.4%) were positive for Cryptosporidium spp., G. duodenalis, and E. bieneusi, respectively. Altogether, three Cryptosporidium species, four G. duodenalis assemblages, and 12 E. bieneusi genotypes were detected. Cryptosporidium hominis, G. duodenalis sub-assemblage AII, and E. bieneusi genotype D were the dominant ones in wastewater from both hospitals and the wastewater treatment plant. A similar distribution in genotypes of enteric pathogens was seen between samples from hospitals and the wastewater treatment plant, suggesting that humans are one of the major sources for these pathogens and hospitals are important contributors of enteric parasites in urban wastewater. Data from this study might be useful in the formulation of preventive measures against environmental contamination of waterborne pathogens.

Identification and nitrogen removal characteristics of Thauera sp. FDN-01 and application in sequencing batch biofilm reactor

A strain FDN-01 was isolated from the sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) which was seeded with wasted activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai. Bacterium FDN-01 was identified as Thauera sp., and Genbank Sequence_ID was KY393097. By comparing inorganic total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency by strain FDN-01 under different conditions, the optimal initial pH, carbon source and the ratio of carbon to nitrogen were 7.5, sodium succinate and 4.0, respectively. Inorganic TN removal efficiency was 93% within 3 d while the concentration of nitrate was 100 mg/L, and the type of substrates affected extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production and the ratio of protein to polysaccharide in the EPS. Further investigation for the application of strain FDN-01 in the SBBRs showed that anoxic ammonia oxidation occurred at room temperature, and the removal efficiencies of inorganic TN were noticeably enhanced by the augmentation of bacterium FDN-01 back into the SBBR. This study provided a promising method of TN removal requiring less carbon source in the wastewater.

Effluent concentration and removal efficiency of nine heavy metals in secondary treatment plants in Shanghai, China.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the most common form of industrial and municipal wastewater control. To evaluate the performance of wastewater treatment and the potential risk of treated wastewater to aquatic life and human health, the influent and effluent concentrations of nine toxic metals were determined in 12 full-scale WWTPs in Shanghai, China. The performance was evaluated based on national standards for reclamation and aquatic criteria published by US EPA, and by comparison with other full-scale WWTPs in different countries. Potential sources of heavy metals were recognized using partial correlation analysis, hierarchical clustering, and principal component analysis (PCA). Results indicated significant treatment effect on As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn. The removal efficiencies ranged from 92% (Cr) to 16.7% (Hg). The results indicated potential acute and/or chronic effect of Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn on aquatic life and potential harmful effect of As and Mn on human health for the consumption of water and/or organism. The results of partial correlation analysis, hierarchical clustering based on cosine distance, and PCA, which were consistent with each other, suggested common source of Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb and common source of As, Hg, Mn, Ni, and Zn. Hierarchical clustering based on Jaccard similarity suggested common source of Cd, Hg, and Ni, which was statistically proved by Fisher's exact test.

Distribution, fate, and risk assessment of antibiotics in five wastewater treatment plants in Shanghai, China

The project studied the occurrence, fate, and seasonal variation of 14 antibiotics, from five wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Shanghai. The results indicated that ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and oxytetracycline were the predominant antibiotics, with maximum concentrations of 1208.20, 959.13, and 564.30ng/L in influents, while 916.88, 106.60, and 337.81ng/L in effluents, respectively. The level of antibiotics in WWTPs obviously varied with seasonal changes, and higher detectable frequencies and concentrations were found in winter. The daily mass loads per capita of amoxicillin, enrofloxacin, and oxytetracycline in the study were all higher than those in other regions/countries, such as Hong Kong, Australia, and Italy. The elimination of antibiotics through these WWTPs was incomplete, and a wide range of removal efficiencies during the different treatment process and seasons were observed (-500.56 to 100% in winter and -124.24 to 94.21% in summer). Sulfonamides were relatively easy to be removed in WWTPs and the ultraviolet (UV) process can effectively improve the removal efficiency. Risk assessment of antibiotics in effluents was estimated. Only AMOX's hazard quotient (HQ) was higher than 0.01. Even though the environmental risks in the study were estimated to be low, the potential negative effects on aquatic ecosystems should call our attention as continually discharge in the long term.

Pilot-scale study of enhanced anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge by electrochemical and sodium hypochlorite combination pretreatment

A pilot-scale study was carried out to evaluate the sludge anaerobic digestion in Qingpu wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai, China. This performance of sludge anaerobic digestion with electrochemical and sodium hypochlorite combination pretreatment was assessed by VS removal and biogas production. The results showed that the system with the pretreatment of electrochemical and sodium hypochlorite combination method performed better than the control. Electrochemical and sodium hypochlorite combination pretreatment significantly enhanced the biogas yields from sludge anaerobic digestion and shortened the stabilization period. The changes of the sludge composition resulted in an increase in both biogas and methane production by 1.83 times and 1.89 times, respectively. Up to 48.97% of VS reduction could be obtained with the electrochemical and sodium hypochlorite combination pretreatment compared to the control of 42.64%. Furthermore, sludge anaerobic digestion with the electrochemical and sodium hypochlorite combination pretreatment could reach stabilization 9 days earlier than that without pretreatment. Processes showed that the electrochemical and sodium hypochlorite combination pretreatment was feasible and had the potential to provide environmental and economic benefits for wastewater treatment plants in China.

Correlating microbial community compositions with environmental factors in activated sludge from four full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants in Shanghai, China.

Activated sludge system is an important process of domestic and industrial wastewater treatment containing highly diverse microbial communities. In this study, high-throughput sequencing was applied to examine the microbial community composition and diversity of activated sludge samples from four full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Shanghai. A relationship between microbial communities and environmental variables was examined. Proteobacteria was the most dominant phylogenetic group, followed by Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. A total of 166 genera were commonly shared by all seven sludge samples, including Zoogloea, Dechloromonas, Thauera, Nitrospira, Arcobacter, etc. Besides these shared populations, certain unique bacterial populations were found abundant in individual sludge sample. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that influent COD and pH had the greatest influence on microbial community compositions, whereas dissolved oxygen (DO) exhibited the least influence. The operating process was likely to foster diversity of the microbial communities inhabiting the wastewater treatment facilities. Alternative operation methods including a fluctuation of anoxic, oxic, and anaerobic conditions were favorable for promoting the growth of diverse microbial populations in activated sludge systems.

Human infective potential of Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis and Enterocytozoon bieneusi in urban wastewater treatment plant effluents.

Cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and microsporidiosis are important waterborne diseases. In the standard for wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents in China and other countries, the fecal coliform count is the only microbial indicator, raising concerns about the potential for pathogen transmission through WWTP effluent reuse. In this study, we collected 50 effluent samples (30 L/sample) from three municipal WWTPs in Shanghai, China, and analyzed for Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis and Enterocytozoon bieneusi by microscopy and/or polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Moreover, propidium monoazide (PMA)-PCR was used to assess the viability of oocysts/cysts. The microscopy and PCR-positive rates for Cryptosporidium spp. were 62% and 40%, respectively. The occurrence rates of G. duodenalis were 96% by microscopy and 92-100% by PCR analysis of three genetic loci. Furthermore, E. bieneusi was detected in 70% (35/50) of samples by PCR. Altogether, 10 Cryptosporidium species or genotypes, two G. duodenalis genotypes, and 11 E. bieneusi genotypes were found, most of which were human-pathogenic. The chlorine dioxide disinfection employed in WWTP1 and WWTP3 failed to inactivate the residual pathogens; 93% of the samples from WWTP1 and 83% from WWTP3 did not meet the national standard on fecal coliform levels. Thus, urban WWTP effluents often contain residual waterborne human pathogens.

An Engineering Practice of Industrial Wastewater Treatment with Fe/Cu Bimetallic Process

Fe/Cu bimetallic process was developed as a new industrial wastewater pretreatment method. It was difficult for an industrial park wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai to treat the wastewater with many refractory pollutants and match the improved discharge standards. The plant needed renovation and adopted Fe/Cu process as a core pretreatment technology. 60,000 tons of wastewater is treated in the plant every day and the average removal rate of COD, BOD, total phosphorous (TP) and color was 73%, 77%, 55% and 48% respectively before renovation. After renovation, the average removal rate of COD, BOD, total phosphorous (TP) and color was reached to 86%, 93%, 76% and 85%, respectively. The engineering practice shows that the removal rate of COD, color and TP in Fe/Cu tank reached 29.7%, 60% and 53.6%. The continuous operating data in two years shows that Fe/Cu process can effectively improve the biodegradability of wastewater and enhanced the subsequent biological treatment. The successful engineering practice indicts that the slag dropping quickly effectively avoid agglomeration and clogging of the Fe/Cu filler and the operating cost is very low.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and dechlorane plus (DP) in a conventional wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Shanghai: Seasonal variations and potential sources

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered an important medium for the transport and transformation of organic pollutants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and dechlorane plus (DP). However, limited data on PBDEs and no data on DP were available regarding wastewater and sludge from China, especially in Shanghai, one of the most developed cities in China. This study examined the occurrence of PBDEs and DP in a conventional WWTP in Shanghai for one year. The levels of the total PBDEs in the influent and dewatered sludge ranged from 5.31 to 27.9ng/L and 31.0 to 99.5ng/g, respectively, which were at the low end of the global range. DP was reported in wastewater with a mean concentration of 0.46ng/L (range: 0.05 to 1.40ng/L) and sludge contained DP in the range of 1.1 to 2.0ng/g. For both PBDEs and DP, there were no significant seasonal variations observed in the four seasons. Indoor dust and outdoor air could be two main sources of PBDEs and DP in the WWTP. In both the influent and sewage sludge, BDE-209 was the most abundant congener, with contributions to the total PBDE levels ranging from 52.9 to 82.6% and 82.7 to 84.0%, respectively. The fraction of anti-DP was consistently higher than that of syn-DP, and the average of fsyn ranged from 0.16 to 0.33, which fell in the range of two commercial DP mixtures. The annual releases of PBDEs and DP via sewage sludge from WWTPs in Shanghai were estimated to be 6370g and 164.8g, respectively. The fate and risk of these compounds after being released into the environment require further research. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to report on the occurrence of DP in wastewater.

Flow of sewage sludge-borne phthalate esters (PAEs) from human release to human intake: Implication for risk assessment of sludge applied to soil

The wide production and use of phthalate esters (PAEs) in both industry and commercial products lead to their ubiquitous existence in the environment. However, understanding flow and pathway of human exposure to PAEs from sources to receptors is necessary and challenging. In this study, we selected final sewage sludge, an inevitable byproduct of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), as one type of important carrier/sources of PAEs to clarify the flow of PAEs between human and the environment, e.g. the release by human to sludge and in turn ingestion by human after these sludges were disposed as soil amendment. Twenty-five sludge samples were collected from 25 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Shanghai, East China. Of all 16 PAE congeners, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DnBP) were predominant with mean concentrations of 97.4 and 22.4μg/g dw, respectively, both locating at the high end of the global range. WWTP treating industrial waster generally contained higher PAEs compared to those treating domestic wastewater, but no positive relationship was found between PAE levels with the percentage of industrial wastewater. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that similar PAE sources for all WWTPs in Shanghai with three exceptions, in which specific PAE products were made. The annual mass loadings via sludge of DEHP, DnBP, and Σ16PAEs were 31.4, 7.44, and 39.6tons in Shanghai and 1042, 247, and 1314tons in China, respectively, only accounting for 0.09% of the total consumption of PAEs in China. If this sludge is applied in soil, human will take 16.4 and 3.8μg/kg bw for DEHP and DnBP every day, respectively, via dietary and soil ingestion, which were lower than the toxicological safety parameters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to analyze the flow of sludge-borne PAEs from human release to human intake.

Occurrence of Phthalate Esters in Sewage Sludge from Wastewater Treatment Plants in Shanghai, China

The widely use of phthalate esters (PAEs) in both industry and commercial products leads to their ubiquitous existence in the environment. In this study, sewage samples were collected from Several wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Shanghai, China to investigate the levels and profiles of PAEs. Of the 16 PAEs, DMP, DEP, DnBP, DiBP, DCHP, DEHP, DnNP and DnOP were present in all sludge samples. DEHP and DnBP are found to be the dominant PAEs in sludge, and the average concentration of DEHP in this study is at a medium magnitude in the world. Following sludge application in farmland, the annual mass loading of PAEs is up to 32,000 kg. However, further studies are needed to explore the metabolites of PAEs in sludge since they are easily biodegraded in WWTP process.

Metagenomic analyses reveal phylogenetic diversity of carboxypeptidase gene sequences in activated sludge of a wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai, China.

Activated sludge of wastewater treatment plants carries a diverse microflora. However, up to 80–90 % of microorganisms in activated sludge cannot be cultured by current laboratory techniques, leaving an enzyme reservoir largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated carboxypeptidase diversity in activated sludge of a wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai, China, by a culture-independent metagenomic approach. Three sets of consensus degenerate hybrid oligonucleotide primers (CODEHOPs) targeting conserved domains of public carboxypeptidases have been designed to amplify carboxypeptidase gene sequences in the metagenomic DNA of activated sludge by PCR. The desired amplicons were evaluated by carboxypeptidase sequence clone libraries and phylogenetic analyses. We uncovered a significant diversity of carboxypeptidases present in the activated sludge. Deduced carboxypeptidase amino acid sequences (127–208 amino acids) were classified into three distinct clusters, α, β, and γ. Sequences belonging to clusters α and β shared 58–97 % identity to known carboxypeptidase sequences from diverse species, whereas sequences in the cluster γ were remarkably less related to public carboxypeptidase homologous in the GenBank database, strongly suggesting that novel carboxypeptidase families or microbial niches exist in the activated sludge. We also observed numerous carboxypeptidase sequences that were much closer to those from representative strains present in industrial and sewage treatment and bioremediation. Thermostable and halotolerant carboxypeptidase sequences were also detected in clusters α and β. Coexistence of various carboxypeptidases is evidence of a diverse microflora in the activated sludge, a feature suggesting a valuable gene resource to be further explored for biotechnology application.

Occurrence and fate of perfluorinated acids in two wastewater treatment plants in Shanghai, China

Perfluorinated acids (PFAs) have drawn much attention due to their environmental persistence, ubiquitous existence, and bioaccumulation potential. The discharge of wastewater effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is a significant source of PFAs to the environment. In this study, wastewater and sludge samples were collected from two WWTPs in Shanghai, China, to investigate the contamination level and fate of PFAs in different stages of processing. The total concentrations of PFAs (∑PFAs) in influent from plants A and B were 2,452 and 292 ng L(-1), respectively. Perfluoropentanoic acid (1,520 ± 80 ng L(-1) in plant A and 89.2 ± 12.1 ng L(-1) in plant B) was the predominant PFA in influent waters, followed by perfluorooctanoic acid. The concentration of ∑PFAs ranged from 75.0 to 126.0 ng g(-1) dry weight in sludge samples from plant B, with perfluorooctanesulfonic acid as the predominant contaminant. The concentrations and fate of PFAs in different WWTPs vary. The ∑PFAs entering plant A decreased significantly in the final effluent of activated sludge process, while that in plant B increased significantly in the final effluent of sequencing batch reactor system. The concentration changes could be due to the sorption onto sludge, or the degradation of PFAs precursors.

Disinfection of treated wastewater as an essential purification step for safe urban reuse: a comparative pilot study of UV- and ClO2-disinfection systems for urban reuse applications in China

Disinfection of wastewater is vital in addressing the potential health risks of urban water reuse. To compare the applicability of wastewater disinfection methods other than chlorine, identical pilot plants that used ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and chlorine dioxide (ClO2) dosing were installed at municipal wastewater treatment plants in Shanghai, China and Darmstadt, Germany. The investigation included public health and environmental aspects associated with the two disinfection methods. The results of the pilot-scale studies suggest that, in order to comply with Chinese water quality standards for urban water reuse, it is advisable to have a tertiary treatment before wastewater disinfection. Both methods were able to achieve a 4 log10 reduction in both total coliforms and Escherichia coli (E. coli). There was no evidence for regrowth of E. coli. However, after an initial 3 log10 reduction, HPC increased within 48 h by more than 10-fold after UV irradiation as well as after low doses of ClO2. An increase in acute toxicity was detected after dosing with ClO2 but not after UV irradiation.

Isolation and identification of an iopromide-degrading strain and its application in an A2/O system

An iopromide (IOPr)-degrading bacterium was isolated from activated sludge of a wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai. Based on its morphology, physiological-biochemical characteristics and a phylogenetic analysis of its 16S rRNA sequence, the bacterium was identified and named as Pseudomonas sp. I-24. The optimum condition for degrading IOPr was at 30°C and pH 7.0. After 5days, strain I-24 could degrade 30mg/L IOPr by 99% in a basal salts medium with a 5% (V/V) inoculum and 200mg/L starch as the primary substrate. When applied to an Anaerobic-Anoxic/Aerobic (A2/O) process, with the coexistence of other bacteria, the strain I-24 got lower (61.3%) IOPr removal, but in two A2/O systems (with and without I-24 inoculation), the CODcr removal were both approximately 95%. The trial dosed with strain I-24 showed better IOPr removal than the un-dosed one. I-24 sustained its abundance in the A2/O system during the experiment.

Chemical and microbial changes during autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) of sewage sludge

Autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) is a promising process for sewage sludge stabilization. Batch experiments were conducted on sewage sludge collected from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai, China, to evaluate the effectiveness of the ATAD system by determining changes in volatile suspended solids (VSSs) and to study its microbial diversity by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of 16S rRNA gene sequences amplified by PCR. The digestion system achieved rapid degradation of the organic substrate at 55 degrees C. The VSS was removed by up to 45.3% and 50.4% at 216 h and 264 h, respectively, while NH(4)(+)-N, chemical oxidation demand and total organic carbon of supernatant as well as total nitrogen did not exhibit obvious declines after 168 h. The microbial diversity changed during the thermophilic process as thermophiles belonging to the Hydrogenophilaceae, Thermotogaceae, Clostridiaceae and the genus Ureibacillus replaced less temperature-tolerant microorganisms such as Sphingobacteriaceae and the genus Trichococcus.

Seasonal occurrence and behavior of synthetic musks (SMs) during wastewater treatment process in Shanghai, China

Synthetic musks (SMs), as a group of the widely used fragrance ingredients, are not completely removed from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Although the increasing concerns have been focused on the removal and fate of these compounds in WWTP, little is known related to SMs removal mechanism with the seasonal variation, especially, the detail removal contribution of bioreactor in different seasons. In this study, in order to clearly understand the complicated behavior of SMs during wastewater treatment process, we determined four synthetic musks, galaxolide (HHCB), tonalide (AHTN), musk xylene (MX) and musk ketone (MK) in a domestic WWTP in Shanghai, China during four seasons (with the particular interests on the seasonal contribution of individual bio-unit). Operating temperature combined other seasonal elements (e.g. illumination, biomass and bioactivity) render influences on the elimination of SMs in different treatment units, particular in the bioreactor. The results showed that the higher operating temperature would benefit the elimination of SMs. The overall mass loss of total SMs during the wastewater treatment process were as high as 131.7 g d − 1 (28.3 g d − 1 loss in bioreactor) in summer followed by 109.1 g d − 1 (29.8 g d − 1 loss in bioreactor) in fall. Contributions of individual bio-unit (anaerobic, anoxic and oxic unit) to the total SMs elimination in bioreactor were seasonal fluctuated, e.g. the anoxic unit made a remarkable contribution (almost 90%) in fall, whereas there were nearly equivalent contributions of three bio-units in summer.
