Effectiveness of a brief counseling intervention in stimulating vocational exploration

The intervention procedures used in this study, a brief report of vocational interest scores and small group sessions on vocational planning, were designed to encourage girls to consider the full range of occupations, unrestricted by sex-role stereotypes. In each of three schools, ninth-grade girls with average academic ability or above were randomly assigned to an intervention group ( N = 195) and a control group ( N = 195). Analyses of 1- and 3-month outcome data indicated that the intervention stimulated occupational exploration and increased congruence between occupational preferences and measured interests. Outcomes differed according to interest type, thus suggesting that certain students may need more counselor attention than others.

Improving Self‐Concept and Learning Skills of Marginal Black Students: A Seminar Approach

In this article, an eight‐session seminar model is presented. This seminar is designed to increase participants' study skills and to redefine participants' self‐concepts from those characterized by feelings of inadequacy and frustration to concepts of selves as competent and capable. Specific study skills content covers learning strategies, two‐way communication, learning styles, note making, test taking, vocational planning, and academic coping strategies. This seminar model has been used to meet the above goals with considerable success; relevant data from the evaluation of a class taught using this model is included.

Clinical consultation to pediatric neurology and developmental pediatrics

Abstract Physicians whose primary focus of practice is with de‐velopmentally disabled children have a special need for psychological consultation. While referrals to this sort of practice are primarily for physical handicaps such as epilepsy or motor handicaps the majority of such patients will have in addition some cognitive or behavioral problem as well. The clinical child psychologist's skill in screening and individual assessments, counseling, behavioral modification, educational and vocational planning and objective assessment of various treatment modalities enhance the quality of patient care in a complementary rather than competitive manner in such a setting.

The effects of being interest-inventoried

This study investigated the effects of receiving the results of the Kuder Occupational Interest Survey on several aspects of vocational behavior among high school students. It was found that receiving results increased self-knowledge compared to a control group who received none. Receiving results did not affect confidence in or satisfaction with vocational plans, unless the person had expressed high interest in his or her inventory results before hand. Information seeking was not increased by receiving results, in contrast to findings from other studies, and there were no differential effects for gender or year in school. Implications of these findings for guidance programs in the schools are discussed.

Occupational daydreams as predictors of vocational plans of college women

Increase in predictability of vocational plans was sought by using variables from Holland's Self-Directed Search (SDS). College women ( N = 152) took the SDS at matriculation and indicated their current major and their two most likely vocational plans 3 years later via a brief questionnaire. The most recent daydream and a summary of daydream codes were the best single predictors of academic major; and the most recent daydream was the best single predictor of vocational plans. The SDS summary code combined with daydream codes was also found to increase predictions of all criteria. Results imply that occupational daydreams can be used effectively to predict occupational choices of college women, and that these predictions are strengthened by the additional data provided by the SDS.

Vocational maturity and anxiety among vocationally undecided and indecisive students: The effectiveness of Holland's Self-Directed Search

This study was designed with two purposes in mind: (1) to measure the effectiveness of Holland's Self-Directed Search for Educational and Vocational Planning (SDS); and (2) to test the validity of Goodstein's ( Theories of Counseling. B. Stefflure, Ed., 1965) hypothesis that career indecision and indecisiveness are differentially related to anxiety and vocational maturity. A total of 66 high school males and 60 high school females were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups and tested for anxiety and vocational maturity levels; the experimental subjects were given the SDS. Statistical analysis indicated that the SDS was an effective instrument in reducing career indecision; Goodstein's hypothesis was not supported by the results of the study.

The predictive power of Holland's investigative personality type and consistency levels using the self directed search

Using the Self Directed Search (SDS), the predictability of Holland's Investigative personality type and the three levels of consistency were assessed. A sample of male Investigative subjects ( N = 171) who completed the SDS as freshmen in 1970 was sent a questionnaire 4 years later. The questionnaire asked subjects to state their academic major, occupational plan upon graduation, and occupational plan 5 years hence. Hypotheses concerned the predictability over a 4-year college period of (1) one-, two-, and three-letter SDS and most recent daydream codes and (2) Holland's three levels of consistency. Results indicated that, for Investigative-type freshman males, the SDS has moderately high efficiency in predicting, 4 years later, their ultimate major and their immediate and future vocational plans. The differential predictability of Holland's three consistency levels was supported in 20 of the 27 tests applied.

Impact of a life planning workshop on perceived locus of control.

This study used Rotter's I-E scale to investigate the efficacy of a Life Planning Workshop in facilitating development of an internal locus of control for 5 male and 8 female college students seeking assistance with vocational planning and decision making. Findings showed participants made significantly greater progress ( p < .05) than did a control group of 11 nonparticipants in the development of an internal locus of control.

A Model Program for Counseling and Placement of Offenders

This article describes the Maryland Comprehensive Offender Model Program (COMIP), designed to deliver manpower services to offenders while they are incarcerated and until they are placed in training or employment. Counseling was based on the Reality Therapy model with a high structured format for group sessions. The GATB and NATB were used for vocational planning; Holland's Self‐Directed Search was the most effective interest instrument. Supportive services were minimal and consisted mainly of arranging housing and temporary public assistance grants. Over half of the placements stemmed from individual job development and this resulted in a placement rate higher than that usually achieved with applicants who do not have multiple barriers to employment.

Predicting Success in Vocational Training By Using the GATB

This study examined the relationship between the General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB)and class performance of eleventh‐ and twelfth‐grade high school students enrolled in the Current River Area Vocational School, Doniphan, Missouri. Teachers' grades were used as the dependent variable, and the nine independent variables were scores taken from the aptitude factors of the GATB. The stepwise multiple regression technique was used to determine the optimal set of predictors to be used in establishing a regression equation. The results of the project should help in counseling prospective trainees toward trade or shop areas and tentative vocational planning. If not used out of perspective, the G variable in the GATB was the best single predictor of success; the best combination of variables was the G, N, P, F, and M aptitude factors.

College Women Want a Career, Marriage and Children

A sample of 210 female graduating seniors from one of the colleges of the City University of New York were questioned as to their educational and vocational plans. A very large majority, 79%, expected to pursue a career, marry and have children. Whether they expected to take time off from their careers to marry and rear children or to raise families while working was a question that needed further exploring.

Longitudinal study of changes in ego identity status from the freshman to the senior year at college.

Ego identity status interviews were conducted with 53 male college seniors who hadparticipated in a previous study of identity development during the freshman year.As hypothesized, significant increases in the frequency of students in the identityachiever status were observed for both occupational and ideological identity. Also,as predicted, the achiever status was found to be the most stable status from the endof the freshman year to the senior year, while the moratorium status was the leaststable. While the general developmental trend was positive, a substantial propor-tion of the subjects were completing their college years in the identity diffusionstatus.The college years are generally viewed as atime of major psychosocial growth. Ac-cording to Erikson (1959, 1968), the per-sonality component that is most likely to bethe focus of such growth is ego identity.There is an extensive body of research find-ings that provides descriptions of character-istic changes in the content of identity ele-ments (e.g., vocational plans and religiousand political beliefs) during the college years(see Feldman & Newcomb, 1969). However,a change in the content of a student's viewsdoes not, in itself, constitute evidence of psy-chosocial growth, even when the change is inthe direction of views generally held by col-lege seniors. With respect to the develop-ment of ego identity, the distinction be-tween change and growth can be made interms of the process by which identity ele-ments are altered with growth entailing theuse of more mature modes of functioning.

College students' goals, plans, and background characteristics: A synthesis of three empirical studies

This study was designed to provide longitudinal data about the change and/or the stability of college-bound students' educational and vocational goals and plans as well as their background characteristics. Data from three studies were contrasted and compared. Included in these studies were: (a) a 2-year follow-up of 4,009 junior college students: (b) a 4-year follow-up of 5,623 4-year college and university students; and (c) a comparison of the responses of two independent samples (32,351 and 50,205) of high school seniors. Considerable differences in stability among characteristics were found; however, the changes seem to be orderly and according to logical expectations. The utility of the findings regarding changes and stability in these characteristics for those who work with college populations are discussed, and possible applications are suggested.
