An Efficient Approach for Service Selection Based on MCDM and QoS

Selection of Web services refers to a concept of choosing the appropriate Web services in order to perform services with higher performance. In this paper, we present an approach to solve Web service selection problems based on the Quality of Services (QoS). The proposed approach considers the power of decision makers as well as accounts for the preferences of service consumers to determine the weights of QoS. The present study is designed to determine the lack of using the power of decision makers in the process of service selection. Furthermore, we describe the capability and applicability of the VIKOR (VIsekriterijumskoKOmpromisnoRangiranje) method as an alternative technique for assisting decision-making in Web service selection. Selection of the best service is illustrated using a case study, and the new approach is validated.

Selection of boron based tribological hard coatings using multi-criteria decision making methods

Mechanical and tribological properties of hard coatings can be enhanced using boron as alloying element. Therefore, multicomponent nanostructured boron based hard coatings are deposited on cutting tools by different methods at different parameters. Different mechanical and tribological properties are obtained after deposition, and it is a difficult task to select the best coating material. In this paper, therefore, a systematic evaluation model was proposed to tackle the difficulty of the material selection with specific properties among a set of available alternatives. The alternatives consist of multicomponent nanostructured TiBN, TiCrBN, TiSiBN and TiAlSiBN coatings deposited by magnetron sputtering and ion implantation assisted magnetron sputtering at different parameters. The alternative coating materials were ranked by using three multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods, i.e. EXPROM2 (preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluation), TOPSIS (technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution) and VIKOR (VIšekriterijumsko KOmpromisno Rangiranje), in order to determine the best coating material for cutting tools. Hardness (H), Young’s modulus (E), elastic recovery, friction coefficient, critical load, H/E and H3/E2 ratios were considered as material selection criteria. In order to determine the importance weights of the evaluation criteria, a compromised weighting method, which composes of the analytic hierarchy process and Entropy methods, were used. The ranking results showed that TiBN and TiSiBN coatings deposited at given parameters are the best coatings for cutting tools.

VIKOR Method with Enhanced Accuracy for Multiple Criteria Decision Making in Healthcare Management

Višekriterijumsko kompromisno rangiranje (VIKOR) method is one of the commonly used multi criteria decision making (MCDM) methods for improving the quality of decision making. VIKOR has an advantage in providing a ranking procedure for positive attributes and negative attributes when it is used and examined in decision support. However, we noticed that this method may failed to support an objective result in medical field because most medical data have normal reference ranges (e.g., for normally distributed data: NRR ∈ [μ ± 1.96σ], this limitation shows a negative effect on the acceptance of it as an effective decision supporting method in medical decision making. This paper proposes an improved VIKOR method with enhanced accuracy (ea-VIKOR) to make it suitable for such data in medical field by introducing a new data normalization method taking the original distance to the normal reference range (ODNRR) into account. In addition, an experimental example was presented to demonstrate efficiency and feasibility of the ea-VIKOR method, the results demonstrate the ability of ea-VIKOR to deal with moderate data and support the decision making in healthcare care management. For this reason, the ea-VIKOR should be considered for use as a decision support tool for future study.

Material selection for the tool holder working under hard milling conditions using different multi criteria decision making methods

Nowadays machining of materials in their hardened state, also called hard machining, is a challenge in production of tools and molds. It has some advantages such as lower process time and lower manufacturing cost when compared to conventional machining. In machining of hard workpiece materials, however, very high stresses act on the tool holder through the cutting tool. These stresses necessitate the tool holder to have some specific properties. Especially in hard milling, the tool holder should have high stiffness and should be able to dissipate the energy generated during interrupted cutting. Material cost of the tool holder is also important since lower costs provide a competitive advantage for manufacturers. The material selection for the tool holder should be conducted considering aforementioned requirements. To tackle the difficulty of the material selection with specific properties from a large number of alternatives, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods have been used. In this paper a decision model including extended PROMETHEE II (EXPROM2) (preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluation), TOPSIS (technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution) and VIKOR (VIšekriterijumsko KOmpromisno Rangiranje) methods were used for the selection of the best material for the tool holder used in hard milling. The criteria weighting was performed by compromised weighting method composed of AHP (analytic hierarchy process) and Entropy methods. The candidate materials were ranked by using these methods and the results obtained by each method were compared. It was confirmed that MCDM methods can be used for the solution of real time material selection problems. Tungsten carbide–cobalt and Fe–5Cr–Mo–V aircraft steel were found as the best materials for the tool holder production. The obtained results are found to be rather satisfactory and can be used in design stage of hard machining operations.

A new hybrid MCDM model combining DANP with VIKOR to improve e-store business

Many consumers today buy products and services from e-stores. Because e-store managers are responsible for allocating different resources, it is essential that they understand consumers’ shopping behaviour to provide the best possible value for visitors to their websites. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to focus on assessing and improving strategies to reduce the gaps in customer satisfaction caused by interdependence and feedback problems among dimensions and criteria to achieve the aspiration level. We propose a new hybrid Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) model, combining the Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), DEMATEL-based Analytic Network Process (DANP), and VIšekriterijumsko KOmpromisno Rangiranje (VIKOR) methods to solve these problems. Then, three real cases are used to illustrate how the proposed new hybrid Multiple Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) model improves e-store business. These results can provide e-store managers with a knowledge-based understanding of how to create marketing strategies that reduce the performance gaps of dimensions and criteria to satisfy consumers’ needs and encourage customers to purchase more.

Selection of industrial robots using compromise ranking and outranking methods

Selection of a robot for a specific industrial application is one of the most challenging problems in real time manufacturing environment. It has become more and more complicated due to increase in complexity, advanced features and facilities that are continuously being incorporated into the robots by different manufacturers. At present, different types of industrial robots with diverse capabilities, features, facilities and specifications are available in the market. Manufacturing environment, product design, production system and cost involved are some of the most influencing factors that directly affect the robot selection decision. The decision maker needs to identify and select the best suited robot in order to achieve the desired output with minimum cost and specific application ability. This paper attempts to solve the robot selection problem using two most appropriate multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods and compares their relative performance for a given industrial application. The first MCDM approach is ‘VIsekriterijumsko KOmpromisno Rangiranje’ (VIKOR), a compromise ranking method and the other one is ‘ELimination and Et Choice Translating REality’ (ELECTRE), an outranking method. Two real time examples are cited in order to demonstrate and validate the applicability and potentiality of both these MCDM methods. It is observed that the relative rankings of the alternative robots as obtained using these two MCDM methods match quite well with those as derived by the past researchers.

A STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RELATED PARTY TRANSACTIONS AND MONTHLY SALES IN TAIWAN'S PUBLICLY ISSUED COMPANIES

ABSTRACT This study utilizes VIKOR (VIšekriterijumsko KOmpromisno Rangiranje) method and five important financial features to analyze 100 publicly issued companies. Benford's law is applied to examine the relationship between net sales and related party transactions. According to the study results, joint application of VIKOR and Benford's law appears to be more applicable to identify the manipulation of corporate monthly sales than the use of Benford's law alone. VIKOR method, as we suggested in this paper, can therefore be adopted by relevant government agencies and auditors as an effective tool in uncovering financial crises of Taiwan stock market so as to provide more thorough protection to investors and creditors.
