Hemophilia A: experiences and attitudes of mothers, sisters, and daughters.

The aim of the investigation described was to study experiences and views about hemophilia, genetic counseling, carrier testing, and termination of pregnancy among first-degree female relatives of Finnish hemophilia A patients. Altogether, 167 women participated in the study, which was carried out by a mailed multiple-choice questionnaire. For comparison, a copy of the questionnaire was asked to be given to the spouse. Hemophilia was considered a serious disease. Most women knew well their risk of carriership and of having an affected son. Hemophilia was considered a slightly more acceptable reason for abortion than poor social circumstances. In case of an affected male fetus, 16% of the women would definitely terminate the pregnancy. The majority of participants wished to hear the genetic counselor's view on family planning and termination of pregnancy. The opinions of the spouses were concordant with those of the women.

Brainwashing in small groups is an issue of both past and current concern. Some claim that brainwashing is a workable method of mind control, others say it is an impossibility. Harrigan offers the view that brainwashing, as a technique to implant a particular belief system, does work, but that the success of the technique is dependent on the development of intense relationships among the people involved. Many of these crises have a direct bearing on the functions performed by the counselor. How does the counselor view the future? Can the counselor be classified in the same way as the futurists? In this article futurists, crises, and counseling strategies are discussed in an attempt to bring about congruence and to assist counselors to become aware of and recognize their role in shaping the future.

Parents and peers: socialization agents in the coital behavior of young adults.

In spite of the plethora of books, films and talk about sex, comparatively little is known about the interrelations between sexuality and socialization (Gagnon 1966). It is true that the patterning of premarital sexual behavior has been traced to such factors as differences in social class, religiosity and irreligiosity differential sex role conditioning, peer reference groups, and conservatism and liberalism (Kinsey et al, 1953; Locke, 1951; Kanin and Howard, 1958; Reiss, 1967; and Mirande, 1968); nevertheless there has been little closure in regard to the long range effects of various socializing agents upon the premarital sexual behavior of adolescents and young adults. In the absence of any general theory, there have been numerous assumptions upon which sex problem-oriented professionals have operated. For example some family counselors view premarital coitus (especially on the part of adolescent females) as an 4'acting out' of aggression and anxieties which have been generated within family interaction (Ackerman, 1 958; Friedman et al, 1 970). Others, as for instance some family life specialists hold that early adolescent experiments in coital activity often are due to ignorance and misinformation about sex. Operating on this assumption, many sex educators believe that an adequate sex education, especially if it is augmented by trained parentsv may reduce the need for early coital experimentation (Calderone, 1965; Gadpaille, 1970). Yet another assumption has been made by some who have called attention tO the factor' within the contemporary dating and courtship systems. For example, many writers have deplored, especially for young teens, the American dating arrangement known as going steady. Although the authors wrote at the request of the National Association of College Admissions Counselors, what follows are their personal points of view and are not offered as official positions of NACAC.

School psychologists and counselors view the role of the high school psychology course

Included in the secondary school curriculum are over 500 differently named subjects, at least 75 of which involve content substantially psychological in nature. Ten of the 75 subjects use the word Psychology in the course title (Greer 1962). Courses in psychology are being introduced at an increasing rate in American high schools. Wright's (1965) U.S. Office of Education survey revealed that 2,362 schools were offering psychology in 1961. A more recent study (Anderson, Ahrens, Russell & Trismen, 1964) reported an increase in course offering from l i per cent of schools in 1958 to 18 per cent in 1963. The writer estimates that psychology is now being taught in from 15 to 20 per cent of schools throughout the United States; the percentage appears even higher in the midwest and the far west. Despite the fact that psychology seems to have merit as a secondary school subject, there exists little uniformity of opinion regarding its exact role. The inadequacy of properly defined objectives, course content and instructional materials available, and evidence regarding insufficiently trained teaching personnel led the writer to attempt a clarification and assessment of overall issues relating to the role of psychology in the modern high school. The present article summarizes certain of the results of an investigation on the teaching of psychology as a secondary school subject in American schools, with special reference to the state of Ohio. The views of school psychologists and counselors will be highlighted. The investigator sought to answer three major questions in this study: 1. What is the projected frequency of occurence of psychology courses on the high school level? 2. What is the status of course objectives and content, and what changes, if any, are needed? 3. What are the qualifications and requirements of the teacher of psychology, and what changes, if any, are needed? The reader will find the history of high school psychology well treated in other papers in this issue, and in other articles by this writer Noland, 1966a, 1966b, 1966c).
