‘englandpast.net’: a framework for the social history of England*

Abstract This article reviews the progress made in research and writing on English social history since the nineteen–twenties and proposes a framework for the future work of the Victoria County History. This is built around six principal concepts: three of these—space, gender and order—help to unravel the structures within which people have lived; while three—custom, responsibility and politics—provide an entry into the dynamics of the English social past.

CHAUCER AT WOODSTOCK A THEME IN ENGLISH VERSE OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY

THERE is no end to unrecorded Chaucer allusions, and the only excuse for drawing attention to poetic allusions that seem to have escaped attention is that those quoted in this article are not merely typical of their age but form a subject of civilized reference to two men regarded as the foremost each in his mitier: John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, and Geoffrey Chaucer, according to tradition an earlier resident at Woodstock, 'our English Homer'. Their real or supposed connection with Woodstock brings them together as a theme of English glory fit for poetry. The Victoria County History says bluntly, 'The repeated allegation that Woodstock was the home of Geoffrey Chaucer is unfounded. The Fair Rosamund, who is not the subject of this paper though she creeps in from time to time, does better than Chaucer in the same volume: her historicity, as a resident of Woodstock, and how Henry II's love of Rosamund Clifford made him a frequent visitor to Woodstock Park, begins the account of the borough. The connection of Chaucer with Woodstock goes back at least to Camden's Britannia (1586); Holland renders the passage:2

The integrated management of leisure directorates in UK public libraries

Paper first presented at the Dawson Seminar: Public libraries in the polit ical arena, Loughborough University, September 1993. Traces the emergence of community development as a major concern of UK public libraries, as a means of enabling individuals and groups to acquire more influence over the issues that affect their lives in terms of the quality of life, education, self esteem and self confidence. Notes that this is merely an extension of the motive that led to the growth of the public library movement, the creation of parks and the emphasis given to access to the countryside. Notes the impact of these ideas on Oxfordshire County Council when, in April 1987, it resolved to establish a new com mittee to replace the former Libraries, Museums and Archives Committee. The terms of reference of the new Committee included: undertaking the functions of the Council in relation to libraries, museums, arts, archaeolo gy, archives and records; securing the adequate provision of leisure and recreational facilities throughout the county; and responsibility for the pro duction of the Oxfordshire volumes of the Victoria County History. Concludes that, with the future shape of local government still so uncertain, it is impossible to predict how these large scale leisure and heritage depart ments are likely to evolve.

A Relief from Duke Street, Aldgate, Now in the Museum of London

Among the sculptured stones included in the Museum of London's display on Romano-British religion is a small relief (accession number 3374) showing three figures set in a lunette-shaped field (PL. I A). All three are nude and seated, the central one apparently within a hemispherical bowl-like container, the others on the ground. This mysterious scene has attracted little attention and, apart from a brief notice in Archaeologia and from illustrations in the Victoria County History of London and the Royal Commission volume on Roman London, is virtually unpublished.

Reform in the Provinces: The Government of Stuart England.

The foundation of the English state from the reigns of the Tudors to the age of Queen Victoria was a partnership between the crown and the country gentlemen who exercised administration and justice in the localities. This book is about a formative period in the making of that partnership. Anthony Fletcher suggests that the gentry's vigorous response to a gathering social crisis in the early decades of the seventeenth century enabled them to strengthen their nearly dominant hold upon local power. Although reform in the provinces, directed towards improving the efficiency and effectiveness of government, was not a tidy or even an entirely consistent process, there was enough continuity of administrative effort to ensure that by the reign of Queen Anne the enforcement of order had been streamlined in many respects. This book - the first synthesis of work done in the last two decades on local government - also provides fresh archival data on a number of counties. Fletcher begins with an account of the men who held office as justices of the peace and of their relationships with the Council in London and with the villagers they governed. He then explores in detail the world of the magistrate at work, paying particular attention to initiatives directed towards increasing the tempo of government and to the making of magisterial policy. In the second half of the book, Fletcher utilizes three case studies - of poverty, behaviour, and the militia - to explain the obstacles in the way of reform and assess how it was sometimes achieved. By analyzing the patterns, style, and impetus of the government that magistrates and deputy lieutenants achieved, Fletcher is able to explore fundamental changes in the nature and extent of gentry control and in the attitudes of the gentry to the public service. His book is an important and original contribution to Stuart and Restoration history. Anthony Fletcher has been Professor of History at the Universities of Sheffield, Durham and Essex, and Director of the Victoria County History Project at London University. THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY POLL TAX RETURNS FOR WORCESTER

AbstractIt has been difficult for historians to recapture the character and quality of life of the medieval city of Worcester. The cathedral archives are rich, but few records survive from the government of the medieval city and, apart from the account compiled by the late Sir Frank Stenton, and published in the Victoria County History in 1924, the history of medieval Worcester remains still to be written.
