FAIR ADCP data with OSADCP: a workflow to process ocean current data from vessel-mounted ADCPs

This paper presents the open-source Python software OSADCP developed for the processing of vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (VMADCP) data. At this stage, the toolbox is designed for processing VMADCP measurements from open-ocean applications of Teledyne RDI Ocean Surveyor ADCPs and the data acquisition software VMDAS. Based on the VMDAS ENX binary output format, the software contains implementations for cleaning and vector-averaging of single-ping velocity data, verification of the position data, and applying misalignment and amplitude corrections. The procedures of OSADCP are described in detail to encourage the scientific community to use it for their own purposes. The toolbox is an integral part of a workflow implemented on the German marine research vessels in the framework of the Underway Research Data project of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM). It aims to ensure standardized data acquisition measures, reliable data transfer from the ADCP to shore both near-real-time and in delayed-mode, processing and quality control, and dissemination of the curated data product in the data repository PANGAEA. From PANGAEA, data sets are forwarded to the European marine data hubs Copernicus Marine Service and EMODnet. The workflow that forms the framework for OSADCP is described here as an example of scientific data management that follows the FAIR data guidelines.

Assessing the impact of an offshore longline mussel farm on local water circulation in a highly hydrodynamic energetic bay

Thought to be a sustainable choice, molluscs are the most consumed aquaculture foods after finfish. The expansion of the mussel aquaculture industry offshore reports lower environmental impacts compared to inshore farms. Although an offshore location has the potential to reduce a farm's ecological impacts, the effect of large developments on water currents is still not fully understood. High hydrodynamic regimes can influence the dispersion of farm biodeposits, organic loading, flow alterations with the potential to impact water residence time, particle and sediment dispersal (including larvae and biodeposits) and seabed sediment resuspension, which in turn, can have ecological impacts. Farm-induced flow changes of the UK's first large scale suspended longline mussel farm were assessed by a combination of oceanographic mooring and vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements. Data was separated by upstream and downstream according to the direction of the flow in relation to the farm. M-ADCP results showed a 28% decrease current velocities within the farm's boundaries, demonstrating within-farm current attenuation produced by mussel ropes drag. Flow was then redistributed above and beneath the farm showing velocity increases of 66% and 7% respectively, resulting in above-farm flow acceleration and downwelling (with up to 171% increase in near-seabed velocities compared to sea surface velocities). However, overall mean downstream sea surface velocities decreased by 63%. An overall 21% increase in near-seabed velocities showed the farm's effect on near-bed currents, the opposite to what is naturally achieved by seabed friction. This was further measured by VM-ADCP results also showing secondary flow acceleration at the farm's flanks and increased near-headline flow perturbations of up to 80% mean u velocities over a small horizontal scale (0.5 km), further demonstrating the effects of the farm on the local circulation. Through-farm surface current velocities (waves) were reduced by up to 72%. Flow changes were localised and dependent on the different tidal phases, the farm's design and, the abundance of mussel ropes providing drag.

Exploring diel vertical migration and spatiotemporal variation of zooplankton backscattering strength using an acoustic Doppler current profiler instrument in the Halmahera Sea, Indonesia

Given its critical role in marine ecosystems, this study comprehensively examined zooplankton distribution and behavior in the Halmahera Sea. The temporal and spatial dynamics of zooplankton acoustic backscatter values were analyzed using a 153.6 kHz vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). Analysis was supplemented by biological sampling with a bongo plankton net. Further evaluation included the analysis of oceanographic and bathymetric data. The acoustic, oceanographic, and biological sampling data were obtained from the Jala Citra I ?Aurora? survey expedition in 2021, while the bathymetry data were obtained from the General Bathymetric Charts of the Ocean (GEBCO). The raw ADCP data, represented as digital counts, were transformed into mean volume backscattering strength (MVBS) expressed in decibels (dB) using sonar equations to yield a measure proportional to zooplankton biomass. Temporal observations revealed a diel vertical migration (DVM) pattern in zooplankton aggregation, characterized by movements responding to the daily solar cycle. Spatial observations indicated a higher zooplankton density in semi-enclosed waters than in open water. The high values of acoustic backscatter are not attributed to a single species of zooplankton. Biological sampling identified that Oncaea spp. and Oithona spp., a species from the Cyclopoida order, exhibit the highest abundance. The study concludes that the ADCP, based on acoustic backscatter measurements and data sampling, is an effective tool for detecting the presence and behavior of zooplankton.

Resource assessment using a combination of seabed mounted and semi-stationary vessel-mounted ADCP measurements

Accurate resource assessment for tidal stream sites is crucial for calculation of the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of each project or turbine. The main method as recommended by the IEC’s technical specification on tidal stream resource assessment involves using a numerical model as well as several measurements using Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) mounted on the seabed. Ideally, once the locations of the turbines are known precisely, seabed mounted ADCP measurements will be undertaken at all turbine locations. For large tidal arrays this is however challenging, especially with project development constrained by time and budget. The MeyGen project is the largest planned tidal stream energy project in the world, aiming to develop up to 398 MW of installed power in the Pentland Firth, Scotland, with current velocities reaching up to 5 m/s. During Phase 1 of the project, four 1.5 MW turbines were installed. During Phase 2, site characterization campaigns were carried out to plan the deployment of additional turbines, representing 28 MW of tidal power capacity. Based on learning from Phase 1 around the need to accurately calibrate numerical models at a very detailed spatial resolution, and the costs and time to obtain seabed ADCP measurements at many turbine locations, a new measurement methodology was proposed. This method used semi-stationary vessel-mounted ADCP measurements to characterize the flow at the planned turbine locations, rather than relying on a few seabed-mounted ADCP measurements and a numerical model, or relying on seabed-mounted ADCPs at all the locations of the planned turbines.
 This works introduces the method used for calculating the tidal stream velocities at the planned turbine locations. A 35-day seabed mounted ADCP survey was conducted as a baseline within the area of planned turbines. It used a Teledyne SentinelV50 ADCP configured with 2Hz sampling rate, 5-beam velocities and 1 m depth cells. Using harmonic analysis and prediction, the current velocities were obtained for a 18.6 years period.
 Additionally, during seven days of spring tide, water velocities were measured using a vessel mounted ADCP. It used a Teledyne Workhorse 600kHz configured with circa 1Hz sampling rate and 1 m depth cells. The vessel mounted measurements were undertaken at each turbine location during 5 minutes every hour, for a 12-hour tidal cycle. During each 5 minutes the vessel kept its position within 15-meter radius around the nominal position. Similar vessel-mounted measurements were also undertaken above the seabed mounted ADCP, as well as continuously for 12 hours.
 The semi-stationary vessel mounted ADCP measurements were validated against the seabed-mounted ADCP measurements with the co-located 12-hour data. The current velocity magnitude obtained from the vessel mounted measurements at the turbine locations were then correlated with the simultaneous data from the seabed mounted ADCP. This correlation was finally combined with the 18.6 years timeseries predicted at the seabed-mounted ADCP location to obtain long-term times series and statistics for turbine locations. The final presentation and paper will provide the results of this study.

Phytoplankton reaction to an intense storm in the north-western Mediterranean Sea

Abstract. The study of extreme weather events and their impact on ocean physics and biogeochemistry is challenging due to the difficulty involved with collecting in situ data. However, recent research has pointed out the major influence of such physical forcing events on microbiological organisms. Moreover, the occurrence of such intense events may increase in the future in the context of global change. In May 2019, an intense storm occurred in the Ligurian Sea (north-western Mediterranean Sea) and was captured during the FUMSECK (Facilities for Updating the Mediterranean Submesoscale – Ecosystem Coupling Knowledge) cruise. In situ multi-platform (vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler, thermosalinometer, fluorometer, flow cytometer, a moving vessel profiler equipped with a multi-sensor towed vehicle, and a glider) measurements along with satellite data and a 3D atmospheric model were used to characterise the fine-scale dynamics occurring in the impacted oceanic zone. The most affected area was marked by a lower water temperature (1 ∘C colder), a factor of 2 increase in surface chlorophyll a, and a factor of 7 increase in the nitrate concentration, exhibiting strong gradients with respect to the surrounding waters. Our results show that this storm led to a deepening of the mixed-layer depth from 15 to 50 m and a dilution of the deep chlorophyll maximum. As a result, the surface biomass of most phytoplankton groups identified by automated flow cytometry increased by up to a factor of 2. Conversely, the carbon / chlorophyll ratio of most phytoplankton groups decreased by a factor of 2, evidencing significant changes in the phytoplankton cell composition. These results suggest that the role of storms on the biogeochemistry and ecology of the Mediterranean Sea may be underestimated and highlight the need for high-resolution measurements during these events coupling physics and biology.

Marine GIS as a Tool to Support Backscatter Data Analysis for Zooplankton Investigations

Echo-sounders and Vessel-Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (VM-ADCP) are widely operating onboard research vessels with the aim of providing real-time backscatter and ocean current profiles along the route, while the vessel is moving. Backscatter data are exploited to infer important information about zooplankton presence and distribution. Nevertheless, as these organisms daily vertically migrate even below the depth of the instrument range, the combination of space and time variability make their mapping from a moving vessel quite complex. The objective of this work is to describe a GIS application developed for the management and analysis of these data. The GIS capability as a tool to facilitate zooplankton investigations is assessed by means of a test-case in the area of the Ligurian Sea (Western Mediterranean) by using VM-ADCP backscatter data made available during oceanographic campaigns. The system, which includes a high-resolution bathymetry, environmental parameters, ephemeris, allows to select and visualize data sorted according to all the possible layer combinations. Moreover, different backscatter profiles, characterizing the identified migration phases can be enlightened by means of false color scale representation.

High-resolution observations of lateral circulation at an inflection bend of the Oujiang River Estuary, China

Field observations were conducted at an inflection point of two bends of the Oujiang River Estuary, China, to investigate lateral circulation and its driving mechanisms, and the effect of stratification in a macrotidal estuary. Repeated cross-channel transect measurements of velocities were obtained by vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler at the inflection point during neap and spring tides. Conductivity, temperature, and depth were collected at both ends of the transects to estimate the lateral moment budget. We observed asymmetry of lateral circulation in intra-tidal and inter-tidal regions, with strong single-cell lateral circulation during the neap ebb tide. In contrast, during the flood, lateral circulation was weak but structurally complex. During the spring tide, lateral circulation only appeared at peak ebb and peak flood. This asymmetric variation in lateral circulation is induced by an asymmetric driving mechanism, investigated thoroughly and connected to water stratification. The significant effect of nonlinear advective acceleration in both highly stratified water and well-mixed water indicates the important influence of an inflection point of two bends on lateral circulation. Besides, the strong stratification plays a role to suppress the lateral circulation due to the tilted pycnocline spin opposite to lateral circulation. The Oujiang River Estuary is an important shipping area, and the results have practical significance for the development and utilisation of port and channel resources.

A vertical-mode extrapolation scheme applied to the Brazil Current domain: quasi-synoptic scenarios

The Brazil Current (BC) is a western boundary current, with an average vertical extension of 500 m, which occupies the southwestern margin of Atlantic Ocean. Recently, the South Brazil Bight - SBB (23º S - 28º S) has been intensively explored by the oil and gas industries, which brought a high demand in operational oceanography and ocean state monitoring. In this study we present a new technique based on the vertical dynamic modes of oscillation, to extrapolate velocity profiles in the SBB, with potential applications to data acquired by Vessel Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (VMADCP). Using four quasi-synoptic crosssectional velocity data, acquired by Lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (LADCP), we observed that the mean circulation of this region can be characterized as a 2-dynamical mode system. This mean circulation is mainly dominated at surface by the BC and at intermediate levels by the Intermediate Western Boundary Current (IWBC), which flows northward. Furthermore, observed mesoscale vortical features in the SBB, such as eddies and meanders, are shown to be primarily barotropic-mode dominated. In our extrapolation methodology, the use of an independent set of velocity time series obtained by four moorings has shown to be a valid way for obtaining the relative contribution of each dynamical mode in the velocity field in the SBB. Normalized mean squared errors below 10% and radar diagrams show that the presented methodology was able to reproduce the main dynamic features observed by LADCP transects. Also, with this technique, we extrapolated three VMADCP sections and the results agreed with previous observations.

Estimating Water Transport from Short-Term Vessel-Based and Long-Term Bottom-Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Measurements in an Arctic Lagoon Connected to the Beaufort Sea.

Acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) are quasi-remote sensing instruments widely used in oceanography to measure velocity profiles continuously. One of the applications is the quantification of land–ocean exchange, which plays a key role in the global cycling of water, heat, and materials. This exchange mostly occurs through estuaries, lagoons, and bays. Studies on the subject thus require that observations of total volume or mass transport can be achieved. Alternatively, numerical modeling is needed for the computation of transport, which, however, also requires that the model is validated properly. Since flows across an estuary, lagoon, or bay are usually non-uniform and point measurements will not be sufficient, continuous measurements across a transect are desired but cannot be performed in the long run due to budget constraints. In this paper, we use a combination of short-term transect-based measurements from a vessel-mounted ADCP and relatively long-term point measurements from a moored ADCP at the bottom to obtain regression coefficients between the transport from the vessel-based observations and the depth-averaged velocity from the bottom-based observations. The method is applied to an Arctic lagoon by using an ADCP mounted on a buoyant platform towed by a small inflatable vessel and another ADCP mounted on a bottom deployed metal frame. The vessel-based measurements were performed continuously for nearly 5 h, which was sufficient to derive a linear regression between the datasets with an R2-value of 0.89. The regression coefficients were in turn applied to the entire time for the moored instrument measurements, which are used in the interpretation of the subtidal transport variations.

The erosive power of the Malvinas Current: Influence of bottom currents on morpho-sedimentary features along the northern Argentine margin (SW Atlantic Ocean)

Sediment deposits formed mainly under the influence of bottom currents (contourites) are widely used as high-resolution archives for reconstructing past ocean conditions. However, the driving processes of Contourite Depositional Systems (CDS) are not entirely understood. The aim of this study is to establish a clearer link between contourite features and the oceanographic processes that form them. The morphosedimentary characteristics of a large CDS were analysed together with the current dynamics along the northern Argentine continental margin. This study combines multibeam bathymetry, seismo-acoustic data, sediment samples, vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (VM-ADCP) data and numerical modelling of ocean currents.The contouritic features include large contourite terraces (La Plata Terrace, Ewing Terrace) and an abraded surface connecting the terraces, as well as smaller erosional and depositional features like moats, erosion surfaces on the Ewing Terrace, sediment waves and contourite drifts. Measured and modelled near-bottom currents are vigorous (up to 63 cm/s at 150–200 m above the seafloor) where abraded surfaces and moats are present, and relatively weak (below 30 cm/s) on the La Plata Terrace and the Ewing Terrace. Generally, bottom currents follow the upper and middle slope morphology. Decreasing velocity of water masses flowing northward leads to less erosion and finer sediment deposits. ADCP data and the hydrodynamic model show the formation of eddies near the seafloor which probably lead to the small erosion surfaces on the Ewing Terrace, even though it is mainly a depositional environment. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of the formation of CDS and can help future reconstructions of past ocean conditions based on sedimentary structures.

Turbulent flow mapping in a high-flow tidal channel using mobile acoustic Doppler current profilers

In this investigation, instrumented mobile platforms are used to spatially map the turbulent flows in Grand Passage, one of the Bay of Fundy's more energetic tidal channels in Nova Scotia, Canada. The aim is to characterize the flow around the PLAT-I floating tidal energy platform developed by Sustainable Marine Energy Canada (SMEC). GPS-tracked surface drifters equipped with fast-sampling acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) provide turbulence-resolving vertical profiles of velocity and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate along drifter trajectories, while vessel-mounted ADCP transects complement the mean flow velocity measurements. These data are used to construct tridimensional quasi-synoptic maps of mean velocities and turbulence parameters for several stages of the tide around PLAT-I's location including peak ebb and flood currents. The data set includes measurements under natural flow conditions, and while the turbines installed on PLAT-I were both not operational and operational. The measurement techniques and resulting maps successfully capture the spatial and temporal structure of the flow for unsteady conditions for various tidal conditions. The combined wake of the four 6.3 m operational PLAT-I turbines was measured for a single tidal stage. Closer to the turbines, the vertical extent of the wake is about 6 m (approximately one turbine diameter), increasing with distance downstream, while the maximum observed velocity deficit is 26% relative to not operating conditions, decreasing with distance downstream.

Modelling an energetic tidal strait: investigating implications of common numerical configuration choices

Representation of the marine environment is key for reliable coastal hydrodynamic models. This study investigates the implications of common depth-averaged model configuration choices in sufficiently characterising seabed geometry and roughness. In particular, applications requiring a high level of accuracy and/or exhibiting complex flow conditions may call for greater detail in marine environment representation than typically adopted in coastal models. Ramsey Sound, a macrotidal strait in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK is considered as a case study. The site contains various steeply inclined bathymetric features, including a submerged pinnacle named Horse Rock and a rocky reef called “The Bitches”. The available energy in Ramsey Sound’s tidal currents has attracted attention from tidal energy developers. There is interest in accurately modelling the energetic hydrodynamics surrounding its pronounced bathymetry. The coastal flow solver Thetis is applied to simulate the flow conditions in Ramsey Sound. It is shown that notable prominent bathymetric features in the strait influence localised and, most importantly, regional hydrodynamic characteristics. “The Bitches” consistently accelerate flow in the strait while Horse Rock induces a notable wake structure and flow reversals. The model is calibrated against bed- and vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) observations, by altering seabed roughness parameterisations. A spatially variable and locally scaled Manning coefficient based on diverse seabed classification observations is found to improve model performance in comparison to uniformly applied constants, the latter a more common approach. The local impact of altering the Manning coefficient configuration is found to be greatest during spring flood periods of high velocity currents. Meanwhile, the effect of coarsening the computational mesh around bathymetric features towards values more typically applied in coastal models is investigated. Results indicate severe misrepresentation of seabed geometry and subsequent wake hydrodynamics unless refined to a mesh element size that adequately represents Horse Rock and “The Bitches”.

Effects of <sup>238</sup>U variability and physical transport on water column <sup>234</sup>Th downward fluxes in the coastal upwelling system off Peru

Abstract. The eastern boundary region of the southeastern Pacific Ocean hosts one of the world's most dynamic and productive upwelling systems with an associated oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). The variability in downward export fluxes in this region, with strongly varying surface productivity, upwelling intensities and water column oxygen content, is however poorly understood. Thorium-234 (234Th) is a powerful tracer to study the dynamics of export fluxes of carbon and other elements, yet intense advection and diffusion in nearshore environments impact the assessment of depth-integrated 234Th fluxes when not properly evaluated. Here we use vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (VmADCP) current velocities, satellite wind speed and in situ microstructure measurements to determine the magnitude of advective and diffusive fluxes over the entire 234Th flux budget at 25 stations from 11 to 16∘ S in the Peruvian OMZ. Contrary to findings along the GEOTRACES P16 eastern section, our results showed that weak surface wind speed during our cruises induced low upwelling rates and minimal upwelled 234Th fluxes, whereas vertical diffusive 234Th fluxes were important only at a few shallow shelf stations. Horizontal advective and diffusive 234Th fluxes were negligible because of small alongshore 234Th gradients. Our data indicated a poor correlation between seawater 238U activity and salinity. Assuming a linear relationship between the two would lead to significant underestimations of the total 234Th flux by up to 40 % in our study. Proper evaluation of both physical transport and variability in 238U activity is thus crucial in coastal 234Th flux studies. Finally, we showed large temporal variations on 234Th residence times across the Peruvian upwelling zone and cautioned future carbon export studies to take these temporal variabilities into consideration while evaluating carbon export efficiency.

PROTEVS-MED field experiments: very high resolution hydrographic surveys in the Western Mediterranean Sea

Abstract. From 2015 to 2018 four field experiments (seven legs) were performed in the Western Mediterranean basin during winter or early spring. The main objectives were the assessment of high-resolution modeling and the observation of mesoscale structure and associated ageostrophic dynamics. Thanks to the intensive use of a towed vehicle undulating in the upper oceanic layer between 0 and 400 m depth (SeaSoar), a large number of very high resolution hydrographic transects (total length about 10 000 km) were measured, observing mesoscale dynamics (slope current and its instabilities, anticyclonic eddies, submesoscale coherent vortices, frontal dynamics, convection events, strait outflows) and submesoscale processes like stirring, mixed-layer or symmetric instabilities. When available, the data were completed with velocities recorded by a vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (VMADCP) and by surface salinity and temperature recorded by a thermosalinograph (TSG). Classical full-depth CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) stations were also used, providing the background hydrography of the deeper layers when focusing on peculiar structures. In 2017, a free-fall profiler (MVP-200; MVP – moving vessel profiler) was deployed to manage even higher horizontal resolutions. In 2018, another free-fall profiler (a rapidCAST) was tested. When available, biological sensors (chlorophyll a, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, etc.) were used. They provided useful complementary observations about the circulation. This dataset is an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the very fine scale processes, as the Mediterranean Sea is known for its intense and contrasting dynamics. It should be useful for modellers (who reduce the grid size below a few hundred meters) and should properly resolve finer-scale dynamics. Likewise, theoretical work could also be illustrated by in situ evidence embedded in this dataset. Energy Yield Assessment from Ocean Currents in the Insular Shelf of Cozumel Island

Marine renewables represent a promising and innovative alternative source for satisfying the energy demands of growing populations while reducing the consumption of fossil fuels. Most technological advancements and energy yield assessments have focused on promoting the use of kinetic energy from tidal streams with flow velocities higher than 2.0 m s−1. However, slower-moving flows from ocean currents are recently explored due to their nearly continuous and unidirectional seasonal flows. In this study, the potential of the Yucatan Current was analysed at nearshore sites over the insular shelf of Cozumel Island in the Mexican Caribbean. Field measurements were undertaken using a vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) to analyse the spatial distribution of flow velocities, along with Conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiles as well as data gathering of bathymetry and water elevations. Northward directed flow velocities were identified, with increasing velocities just before the end of the strait of the Cozumel Channel, where average velocities in the region of 0.88–1.04 m s−1 were recorded. An estimation of power delivery using horizontal axis turbines was undertaken with Blade Element Momentum theory. It was estimated that nearly 3.2 MW could be supplied to Cozumel Island, amounting to about 10% of its electricity consumption.

On the Reliability of Surface Current Measurements by X-Band Marine Radar

Real-time quality-controlled surface current data derived from X-Band marine radar (MR) measurements were evaluated to estimate their operational reliability. The presented data were acquired by the standard commercial off-the-shelf MR-based sigma s6 WaMoS® II (WaMoS® II) deployed onboard the German Research vessel Polarstern. The measurement reliability is specified by an IQ value obtained by the WaMoS® II real-time quality control (rtQC). Data which pass the rtQC without objection are assumed to be reliable. For these data sets accuracy and correlation with corresponding vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements are determined. To reduce potential misinterpretation due to short-term oceanic variability/turbulences, the evaluation of the WaMoS® II accuracy was carried out based on sliding means over 20 min of the reliable data only. The associated standard deviation σ W a M o S = 0.02 m/s of the mean WaMoS® II measurements reflect a high precision of the measurement and the successful rtQC during different wave, current and weather conditions. The direct comparison of 7272 WaMoS® II/ADCP northward and eastward velocity data pairs yield a correlation of r ≥ 0.94 , with | b i a s Δ | ≤ 0.06 m/s and σ S = 0.05 m/s. This confirms that the MR-based surface current measurements are accurate and reliable.

Fine-scale hydrodynamic metrics underlying predator occupancy patterns in tidal stream environments

Whilst the development of the tidal stream industry will help meet marine renewable energy (MRE) targets, the potential impacts on mobile marine predators using these highly dynamic environments need consideration. Environmental impact assessments (EIAs) required for potential MRE sites generally involve site-specific animal density estimates obtained from lengthy and costly surveys. Recent studies indicate that whilst large-scale tidal forcing is predictable, local hydrodynamics are variable and often result in spatio-temporal patchiness of marine predators. Therefore, understanding how fine-scale hydrodynamics influence animal distribution patterns could inform the placing of devices to reduce collision and displacement risks. Quantifying distributions requires animal at-sea locations and the concurrent collection of high-resolution hydrodynamic measurements. As the latter are routinely collected during tidal resource characterization at potential MRE sites, there is an untapped opportunity to efficiently collect information on the former to improve EIAs. Here we describe a survey approach that uses vessel-mounted ADCP (Acoustic Doppler current profiler) transects in combination with marine mammal surveys to collect high-resolution and concurrent hydrodynamic data in relation to pinniped (harbour seals Phoca vitulina, grey seals Halichoerus grypus) at-sea occupancy patterns within an energetic tidal channel (peak current magnitudes >4.5 ms−1). We identified novel ADCP-derived fine-scale hydrodynamic metrics that could have ecological relevance for seals using these habitats. We show that our local acoustic backscattering strength metric (an indicator for macro-turbulence) had the highest influence on seal encounters. During peak flows, pinnipeds avoided the mid-channel characterized by extreme backscatter. At-sea occupancy further corresponded with the increased shear and eddies that are strong relative to the mean flows found at the edges of the channel. Our approach, providing oceanographic context to animal habitat use through combined survey methodologies, enhances environmental management of potential MRE sites. The cost-effective collection of such data and the application of our metrics could streamline the EIA process in the early stages of the consenting process.

Wind relaxation and poleward flow events in the upwelling region off Baja California, Mexico

Wind relaxation events are commonly observed in eastern boundary upwelling ecosystems. The wind fields over the southern part of the California Current System were separated into upwelling-favorable winds and wind relaxations by using a technique based on complex correlation analysis. Using vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler and conductivity-temperature-depth observations from 4 consecutive Mexican Investigations of the California Current (IMECOCAL) cruises carried out during 2001–2002, a description of the ocean state associated with these stages of the wind field was elaborated for the northern Baja California (Mexico) upwelling region. Relaxation events occurred during each cruise. A coastal poleward flow event was conspicuous when a relaxation event followed a long upwelling favorable wind event. This pattern was also correlated with a negative or close to zero wind curl at the coast. A coastal equatorial jet and an upper-ocean offshore poleward flow were observed during spring, representing a typical upwelling pattern that is correlated with a large positive wind stress curl near the coast. In winter, a surface poleward flow was inhibited by a strong northwest wind event, which generated a shallow equatorward flow. The circulation patterns described here are consistent with theories that explain surface poleward flows through wind relaxation and negative wind curl.

Hydrography and circulation west of Sardinia in June 2014

Abstract. In the frame of the REP14-MED sea trial in June 2014, the hydrography and circulation west of Sardinia, observed by means of gliders, shipborne CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) instruments, towed devices, and vessel-mounted ADCPs (acoustic doppler current profilers), are presented and compared with previous knowledge. So far, the circulation is not well-known in this area, and the hydrography is subject to long-term changes. Potential temperature, salinity, and potential density ranges as well as core values of the observed water masses were determined. Modified Atlantic Water (MAW), with potential density anomalies below 28.72 kg m−3, showed a salinity minimum of 37.93 at 50 dbar. Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW), with a salinity maximum of about 38.70 at 400 dbar, was observed within a range of 28.72<σΘ/(kg m−3) < 29.10. MAW and LIW showed slightly higher salinities than previous investigations. During the trial, LIW covered the whole area from the Sardinian shelf to 7°15′ E. Only north of 40° N was it tied to the continental slope. Within the MAW, a cold and saline anticyclonic eddy was observed in the southern trial area. The strongest variability in temperature and salinity appeared around this eddy, and in the southwestern part of the domain, where unusually low saline surface water entered the area towards the end of the experiment. An anticyclonic eddy of Winter Intermediate Water was recorded moving northward at 0.014 m s−1. Geostrophic currents and water mass transports calculated across zonal and meridional transects showed a good agreement with vessel-mounted ADCP measurements. Within the MAW, northward currents were observed over the shelf and offshore, while a southward transport of about 1.5 Sv occurred over the slope. A net northward transport of 0.38 Sv across the southern transect decreased to zero in the north. Within the LIW, northward transports of 0.6 Sv across the southern transects were mainly observed offshore, and decreased to 0.3 Sv in the north where they were primarily located over the slope. This presentation of the REP14-MED observations helps to further understand the long-term evolution of hydrography and circulation in the Western Mediterranean, where considerable changes occurred after the Eastern Mediterranean Transient and the Western Mediterranean Transition.

Stratifikasi Massa Air di Teluk Lasolo, Sulawesi Tenggara

<strong>Stratification of Water Mass in Lasolo Bay, Southeast Sulawesi.</strong> As a nature conservation area, Lasolo Bay should be supported by data and information of waters oceanographic. Research for stratification of water masses in Lasolo Bay was conducted. from 10 to 19 July 2011. Temperature and salinity data were obtained using CTD SBE 911 Plus preinstalled on Research Vessel Baruna Jaya VIII at intervals of 24 data per second. Current data were obtained using Vessel Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (VMADCP) with an interval of two seconds. The results show that there are differences in the speed and direction of currents in the water column that lead to stratification of water masses. Currents that drove the water mass of Banda Sea into Lasolo Bay was caused by southeasterly winds with an average speed of 4.1 m/s. At depths of 0–50 m and 100–200 m the current dominance occurs to the northwest, while at depths of 50–100 m and 200–350 m it occurs to the south. The water mass with a salinity of 32.1–34.0 PSU and temperature 26–28°C occupied the surface layer (0–50 m). The water mass with a salinity of 34.4–34.5 PSU identified as the water mass of North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) occupied two depths, i.e. 50–100 m and 200–350 m with different range of temperatures.
