Purpose This paper aims to propose and test a model to analyze the relationship between innovative behavior and culture of innovation in organizational performance. Design/methodology/approach It is a quantitative descriptive method based in structural equation model using SmartPLS® software to measure the correlations between the variables related to the constructs of culture of innovation, innovative behavior and performance. Findings The proposed model and method were validated through the empirical study. The results indicate a positive influence among the constructs demonstrating that the culture of innovation has a greater effect on performance, managing to explain an approximate variation of 54, confirming the proposed hypotheses. The overall result shows 39% of the variance in performance, due to variations in innovative behavior and innovation culture. Research limitations/implications Although the study does not focus on generalizing results, but rather advancing discussions of the tested relationship between the constructs, it can be emphasized that the sample used refers to the musical instruments sector of a country. Practical implications The research contributes in an unprecedented way with the Brazilian musical instruments sector and instigates new empirical studies generating contribution to business management and the consequent development of the economy. Social implications The research contributes in an unprecedented way with the Brazilian musical instruments sector and instigates new empirical studies generating contribution to business management and the consequent development of the economy. Originality/value The literature lacks empirical studies that relate innovative behavior, culture of innovation and performance, and this study contributes to this discussion. Based on a theoretical approach to understanding this relation, the study confirms the relevance of the proposed model and its applicability in the business context.
