Hematological ratios as markers of lupus activity in Paraguayan patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

Introduction: The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are markers of inflammation and prognosis in systemic diseases. This study determined the association between hematological indices, and disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods: This prospective, observational and analytical cross-sectional study included 87 Paraguayan patients diagnosed with SLE, according to the ACR/EULAR 2019 criteria. We investigate four hematological indices: neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), eosinophil/lymphocyte ratio (ELR), and monocytes/lymphocyte ratio (MLR). Results: Eighty-seven percent were female, with a median age of 34.9 ±12.3 years. SLEDAI mean of 3.68 ± 4.76 was found. SLEDAI mean was 3.68 ± 4.76. Positivity of anti-DNAds was found in 52% of the patients. CRP mean was 3.5 ± 4.6. Regarding values of hematological indices, we found: NLR mean of 2.4 ± 1.6 was obtained, ELR 0.07 ± 0.09, MRL 0.07 ± 0.07 and PLR 155.89 ± 80.69. A significant positive correlation was found with SLEDAI and NLR (r=0.34, p=0.001). Based on the ROC curve, the best cut-off value for our patient cohort capable of predicting patients with high activity is for NLR values ? 2.283 (AUC: 0.66). Conclusion: NLR could be a valuable and accessible biomarker to identify elevated activity in patients with SLE.

Effect of Fluoride Toxicity on Some Haematological Indices in Human Population

The present study aimed to determine the toxicity of Fluoride on haematological indices in some population residing in fluoride endemic area of Dongergaon village of Chandrapur district, Maharashtra, India. The study group was selected on the basis of elevated level of serum fluoride and symptoms of skeletal fluorosis. Various haematological parameters such as Hb, TEC, TLC, HCT and PLT count were analysed. Students t-test was applied for statistical analysis and the result showed that values of haematological indices in study group were significantly declined as compared to control group. The outcomes of the present study indicated the reduction in Hb, TEC, HCT, increase in TLC and non-significant change in PLT.

Variation in blood count parameters of children aged 5 to 11 years in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire

Background: In Côte d’Ivoire, as in most developing countries, the reference values of hematological indices currently in use come from data collected from populations living in industrialized countries. The aim of this study was to determine variations in the child's blood count in Cote d'Ivoire. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study has focused on 310 children (172 girls and 138 boys) aged 5 to 11 years selected from three municipalities of Abidjan. Blood samples were taken from each child in order to assess the parameters of the blood count. Results: The results revealed that the means of the different hematological parameters (red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cells, neutrophils, eosinophils, monocyte, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) were in accordance with the normal physiological reference values from the literature apart lymphocyte. The rate of lymphocytes (51.3 ± 0.5) was higher overall. All the parameters did not indicate significant differences between girls and boys (p > 0.05) except mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin that were statistically different by sex (p < 0.05). The percentage of having a rate of haemoglobin lower than 11.5 decreased significantly (p˂0.005) when the age increased. In addition, the rate of hemoglobin and hematocrit increased slightly starting from the age of 8 years. There is a significant difference (p < 0.05) in hemoglobin level between girls and boys in the age group of 9 years. Leukopenia is observed in a minority of children in the age groups of 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 years. Conclusion: Some hematological parameters were different from other data published in the literature, which suggested a local development of reference values for children.

Nano Zinc Versus Bulk Zinc Form as Dietary Supplied: Effects on Growth, Intestinal Enzymes and Topography, and Hemato-biochemical and Oxidative Stress Biomarker in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1758).

Five isonitrogenous diets were formulated to comprise two forms of zinc (Zn): convention zinc oxide named Bulk-ZnO or zinc oxide nanoparticles (Nano-ZnO) supplemented at two levels 30 and 60 mg kg-1 compared to the control diet. Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, fingerlings (5.02-5.05 g) were fed tested diets two times a day for 84 days. The results displayed that the best growth and digestive enzyme activity (P < 0.05) were noticed in fish fed 60 mg kg-1 Nano-ZnO. Moreover, significant (P < 0.05) improvement in intestinal topography was observed in 60 mg kg-1 Nano-ZnO group versus other treatments. Furthermore, fish fed 30 mg kg-1 Nano-ZnO recorded the best values of hematological indices (P < 0.05). The alanine and aspartate aminotransferase (ALT and AST) values were lower, while total serum protein, albumin, and globulin contents were clearly higher in fish fed diet that contained 30 mg kg-1 Nano-ZnO versus other groups. The significant highest values of oxidative enzyme activity escorted with lower malondialdehyde value recorded of fish fed diet supplemented with 60 mg kg-1 Nano-ZnO.The results indicated that inclusion of Nano-ZnO at 60 mg kg-1 was the recommended source to enhance growth, feed utilization, amylase andlipase enzymes activity, intestinal morphology, hemato-biochemical, and oxidative response biomarkers of Nile tilapia compared with Bulk-ZnO incommercial tilapia feeds.

Sample stability is essential for reliable results in clinical laboratory practice. The aim of the work was to investigate the change in values of hematological indices in samples stored for up to 72 hours under different temperature regimes. A total of 60 whole blood samples stored under different conditions were analyzed: at room temperature (25°C), heated to 35°C and cooled to 4°C. Analysis was performed at different time points: immediately after blood sampling and then consecutively after 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours. K2EDTA anticoagulant tubes were used, and results were obtained using a UniCel DxH 800 hematology analyzer. The median shift of the parameters relative to baseline for each combination of time and temperature was assessed using the Wilcoxon matched pairs test. The shift in hemogram values obtained using Bland-Altman plots was compared with the maximum permissible error specified in the quality specification for the desirable error. Hemoglobin, erythrocyte count, mean erythrocyte hemoglobin content and platelet content were stable for at least 72 hours at all temperatures used in the experiment. For the other tested parameters, the first unacceptable changes in hemogram values were observed after 3 hours when the samples were stored at 25°C and 35°C. In samples cooled to 4°C, the first statistically significant differences were recorded after 6 hours. As a result, storage of samples for 72 hours at room temperature led to reliable unacceptable changes in 6 hemogram parameters of the 11 studied, at 4°C 5 parameters changed unacceptably, and at 35°C – 7 parameters. The obtained results, on the one hand, indicate that when analyzing the results of hematological tests is performed with a delay after sample collection, changes in hematological parameters should be considered; on the other hand, they provide information about the list of parameters subject to temperature-time changes, as well as about the intensity of these changes.

Helminthes of the Common Eider (Somateria mollissima) on the Eastern Murman, its impact on the digestive activity and physiological state

An ecological and physiological study of Common Eider (Somateria mollissima) nesting on the coast of Eastern Murman was carried out. The species composition of helminthofauna of birds and the quantitative parameters of the infection were studied. It is established that trematodes of the genus Microphallus, three species of cestodes - Lateriporus teres (Cestoda: Dilepididae), Fimbriarioides intermedia (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae), Microsomacanthus diorchis (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae) and one species of acanthocephalan - Polymorphus phippsi (Palaeacanthocephala: Polymorphidae) parasitized in the small intestine of Common Eider. It is shown that the activity of proteases decreased at the locations of F. intermedia and M. diorchis in the intestines of birds, with infestation with the acanthocephalan P. phippsi, on the contrary, increased. The activity of glycosides in the intestinal mucosa was reduced in comparison with the control values by infection cestodes M. diorchis. There was an increase in the values of hematological indices in infected individuals relative to the control parameters.

Impacts of demographic and laboratory parameters on key hematological indices in an adult population of southern Taiwan: A cohort study.

Studies in Caucasians have shown that values of hematological indices could be affected by a wide variety of factors. However, parallel work in other ethnical populations, particularly from the Asia-Pacific region, is lacking. Therefore, we designed this study to explore the association between clinical/laboratory parameters and hemogram levels. Adult individuals who came to our hospital for health exams were screened. Information on demographics and laboratory profiles was obtained. We analyzed the impacts of these parameters on the variation of hemogram. Overall, 26,497 adults were included in the current analysis after excluding those with abnormal hemogram. Multivariate regression analysis showed increasing age and male gender negatively affected the number of platelets, whereas a higher serum apolipoprotein B level was associated with an elevated platelet count. Gender and serum albumin level were the major determinants of variation in hemoglobin level. A modestly increased white cell count was seen in men as well as individuals with elevated apolipoprotein B levels, but it was inversely correlated with changes in age and serum albumin levels. Conversely, some variables, although statistically significantly associated with the hematological indices, only provided a trivial explanation for the heterogeneity observed. We further established predictive models for the approximate estimation of hematological indices in healthy adults. Our data indicate that age, gender, and serum levels of apolipoprotein B and albumin affect hematological indices in various ways. We also demonstrate that variation in hemogram could be successfully predicted by a number of clinical and laboratory parameters.

Effects of &lt;i&gt;Balanites aegyptiaca&lt;/i&gt; on tadpoles and &lt;i&gt;Oreochromis niloticus&lt;/i&gt;

Objective: Fingerlings of Oreochromis niloticus and tadpoles were exposed to the acute concentrations of aqueous extract of the bark of Balanites aegyptiaca (date palm desert) to determine the 96h-LC50 (lethal concentration 50, concentration that will kill half of the test animals exposed).Methodology and results: The O. niloticus (Nile tilapia) was further subjected to sub-lethal concentrations of the plant extract to determine the effect on growth and haematological indices. The time for toxicity disappearance (TTD) was also estimated. The experiments were conducted using the static renewal bioassay technique at UNAAB Fish Laboratory. The 96h-LC50 for O. niloticus was estimated to be 26.22 mg l-1 while that of Tadpole (Rana species) was13.77 mg l-1. The TTD of B. aegyptiaca was estimated to be 48 hours. During sub-lethal exposure, there was a slight decrease in the mean body weight and all the haematological parameters as the concentration of the toxicant increased except MCV, MCH, MHC that were more or less equal. However, statistical analysis on these values of haematological indices did not show any significant difference at 5%. The use of Balanites aegyptiaca is recommended in control of predators e.g. tadpoles in pond fish culture system because the product is non-toxic to fish at lower concentration, biodegradable and very cheap. The uncontrolled use in open water body for fishing should be prohibited, as the resultant deleterious effects will subsequently lead to death of not only target fish but also other aquatic organism. Hence, contribute to reduction in the biodiversity.Conclusion and application of results: The results of this study show the toxic effect of B. aegyptiaca on O. niloticus and Tadpoles. The lethal doses (96h-LC50) obtained are 26.22 mg l -1 and 13.80 mg l-1 respectively. Therefore, B. aegyptiaca powder can be use in selective eradication of aquatic organism to control unwanted predatory species i.e. tadpoles. B. aegyptiaca bark powder can be recommended because it is biodegradable and leave no adverse effect on environment.Keys words: Balanites aegyptiaca, Oreochromis niloticus, Tadpoles, haematological parameters

Reference range variation in haematological indices amongst five different age groups of less than one year in Islamabad, Pakistan

The objective of the current study was to establish the reference ranges of haematological indices amongst five healthy infantile (<1 year) age groups. It was a descriptive cross sectional study carried out at the Department of Haematology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Rawalpindi. Non probability convenience sampling was adopted for the proceedings for the study. A sample size was 2000 which was equally distributed as 400 samples for all the five age groups i.e. <27 days, 3 month, 6 month, 9 month and one year. One thousands were males and 1000 were the females. An informed consent from the guardian was the pre requisite of study, while those candidates having an evidence of any systemic illness were not excluded. Results : The values of haematological indices i.e. MCV, MCHC, MCH, PCV and RDW varies with growing age of an infant. A decrease in all these values was observed from <27days to one year of age infants. Conclusion : A decrease in all these values was observed from <27days to one year of age infants. The values reported in this study can be used as a local reference for the newborn aged between <27 days and 1 year of age.

Normal hematological parameters in Iranian cashmere (Raini) goats

Raini goat is an Iranian cashmere goat which is raised in large numbers in Kerman province of Iran where goat production contributes significantly to the agricultural economy. Normal hematological indices are valuable aid in the diagnosis of hematological disorders. Determination of the main hematological and hematochemical parameters of animals helps veterinarians to confirm clinical diagnosis, estimate the severity of cases, administer appropriate treatment, and evaluate outcomes. Limited information is available for normal hematological parameters in Raini goats. The purpose of the present study was to determine reference values of hematological indices for clinically healthy Iranian cashmere (Raini) goats in order to establish a basis for clinical interpretation. In the present study, reference values for packed cell volume, hemoglobin, total RBC, total and differential WBC count were determined.

Reference values of the haematological indices in grayling ( Thymallus thymallus linnaeus)

1. 1. Values of haematological indices were measured in 305 adult grayling ( Thymallus thymallus Linn.) electrofished in the Svratka River. In the field, immediately after capture, their blood was sampled by cardiac puncture. Subsequently, the values of the haematological parameters were measured using adapted standard human methods. The data obtained were then used to establish the annual reference values of the indices. 2. 2.
