Fundamental detectability of Raman scattering: A unified diagrammatic approach.

Both spontaneous Raman scattering and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) are cornerstones of modern photonics, spectroscopy, and imaging. However, a unified understanding of the ultimate detectability of Raman scattering is lacking, due to both historical and technical reasons. Starting from quantum electrodynamics, we formulate the fundamental detectability for both spontaneous Raman scattering and SRS. The key concept is recognizing spontaneous Raman scattering as stimulated Raman process driven by vacuum field fluctuation. A simple and unified expression, Eq. (17), is derived, which can be depicted on a two-dimensional phase-diagram-like graph with inherent symmetry. It turns out that the particle nature of light dictates the ultimate detectability of spontaneous Raman scattering, which can be represented by a line on this detectability diagram. Importantly, if provided with a reasonably strong Stokes photon flux, SRS can breach this fundamental limit and open uncharted territory of drastically accelerated measurement speed and much lower detection concentration relevant to biological imaging. Such new territory in the detectability diagram is otherwise forbidden by the spontaneous counterpart. Diagrammatical analysis explains the empirical observations, provides quantitative insights, and makes new predictions. Notably, recent experimental applications of SRS microscopy can almost entirely be captured by this diagram, further supporting the explanatory power of the theory. Thus, this unified diagrammatic approach outlines a framework to understand all Raman-based measurement and provides a theoretical explanation for the remarkable utility of the emerging SRS microscopy.

Giant Quantum Electrodynamic Effects on Single SiV Color Centers in Nanosized Diamonds.

Understanding and mastering quantum electrodynamics phenomena is essential to the development of quantum nanophotonics applications. While tailoring of the local vacuum field has been widely used to tune the luminescence rate and directionality of a quantum emitter, its impact on their transition energies is barely investigated and exploited. Fluorescent defects in nanosized diamonds constitute an attractive nanophotonic platform to investigate the Lamb shift of an emitter embedded in a dielectric nanostructure with high refractive index. Using spectral and time-resolved optical spectroscopy of single SiV defects, we unveil blue shifts (up to 80 meV) of their emission lines, which are interpreted from model calculations as giant Lamb shifts. Moreover, evidence for a positive correlation between their fluorescence decay rates and emission line widths is observed, as a signature of modifications not only of the photonic local density of states but also of the phononic one, as the nanodiamond size is decreased. Correlative light-electron microscopy of single SiVs and their host nanodiamonds further supports these findings. These results make nanodiamond-SiVs promising as optically driven spin qubits and quantum light sources tunable through nanoscale tailoring of vacuum-field fluctuations.

Control of the Bright-Dark Exciton Splitting Using the Lamb Shift in a Two-Dimensional Semiconductor.

We investigate the exciton fine structure in atomically thin WSe_{2}-based van der Waals heterostructures where the density of optical modes at the location of the semiconductor monolayer can be tuned. The energy splitting Δ between the bright and dark exciton is measured by photoluminescence spectroscopy. We demonstrate that Δ can be tuned by a few meV as a result of a significant Lamb shift of the optically active exciton that arises from emission and absorption of virtual photons triggered by the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. We also measure strong variations of the bright exciton radiative linewidth as a result of the Purcell effect. All these experimental results illustrate the strong sensitivity of the excitons to local vacuum field fluctuations. We find a very good agreement with a model that demonstrates the equivalence, for our system, of a classical electrodynamical transfer matrix formalism and quantum-electrodynamical approach. The bright-dark splitting control we demonstrate here in the weak light-matter coupling regime should apply to any semiconductor structures.

Time evolution of quantum correlations induced by atomic state superpositions

In this article, we study the time evolution of Gaussian quantum correlations induced by the superposition of atomic states. Photon-based quantum information and communication are powerful and suitable because the relevant physical mechanisms, the high combination rate of photons, and the sources of coherence can be understood and easily modeled. To this end, coupled photon pairs produced by coherent superposition of atomic states in an atomic laser and influences of spontaneous atomic decay due to vacuum field fluctuations have been considered. The dynamics of the quantum system leads to temporal quantum correlations such as quantum discord, quantum entanglement, and quantum steering, which are treated by the density operator approach. It was found that the generated photon pairs are completely in a separable state in the initial phase of the dynamical processes. The quantum coherences must be given sufficient time to generate quantum correlations that saturate after very short time scales. The strength of these quantum correlations has been improved by increasing the number of superposed atoms per unit of time. In particular, two-way quantum steering, which is a guarantee for the existence of quantum discord and quantum entanglement, can be achieved by increasing the atom injection rate from 10 kHz to 100 kHz when the probability of finding atoms in the excited state is 45%.

Gravitational wave signals in an Unruh–DeWitt detector

We firstly generalize the massive scalar propagator for planar gravitational waves propagating on Minkowski space obtained recently in van Haasteren and Prokopec (2022 arXiv:2204.12930 [gr-qc]). We then use this propagator to study the response of a freely falling Unruh–DeWitt detector to a gravitational wave background. We find that a freely falling detector completely cancels the effect of the deformation of the invariant distance induced by the gravitational waves, such that the only effect comes from an increased average size of scalar field vacuum fluctuations, the origin of which can be traced back to the change of the surface in which the gravitational waves fluctuate. The effect originates from the quantum interference between propagation on off-shell detector’s trajectories which probe different spatial gravitational potential induced by the gravitational backreaction from gravitational waves, and it is therefore purely quantum. When resummed over classical graviton insertions, gravitational waves generate cuts on the imaginary axis of the complex -plane (where denotes the difference of proper times), and the discontinuity across these cuts is responsible for a continuum of energy transitions induced in the Unruh–DeWitt detector. Not surprisingly, we find that the detector’s transition rate is exponentially suppressed with increasing energy and the mass of the scalar field. What is surprising, however, is that the transition rate is a non-analytic function of the gravitational field strain. This means that, no matter how small is the gravitational field amplitude, expanding in powers of the gravitational field strain cannot approximate well the detector’s transition rate. We present numerical and approximate analytical results for the detector’s transition rate both for circularly polarized and for polarized monochromatic, unidirectional, gravitational waves.

Casimir wormholes in modified symmetric teleparallel gravity

In recent years there has been a growing interest in the field of Casimir wormhole. In classical general relativity (GR), it is known that the null energy condition (NEC) has to be violated to have a wormhole to be stable. The Casimir effect is an experimentally verified effect that is caused due to the vacuum field fluctuations in quantum field theory. Since the Casimir effect provides the negative energy density, thus this act as an ideal candidate for the exotic matter needed for the stability of the wormhole. In this paper, we study the Casimir effect on the wormhole geometry in modified symmetric teleparallel gravity or f(Q) gravity, where the non-metricity scalar Q drives the gravitation interaction. We consider three systems of the Casimir effect such as (i) two parallel plates, (ii) two parallel cylindrical plates, and (iii) two-sphere separated by a large distance to make it more experimentally feasible. Further, we studied the obtained wormhole solutions for each case with energy conditions at the wormhole throat with radius r_0 and found that some arbitrary quantity violates the classical energy conditions at the wormhole throat. Furthermore, the behavior of the equation of state (EoS) is also analyzed for each case. Finally, we investigate the stability of the obtained Casimir effect wormhole solutions with the generalized Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff (TOV) equation.

Breakdown of topological protection by cavity vacuum fields in the integer quantum Hall effect.

The prospect of controlling the electronic properties of materials via the vacuum fields of cavity electromagnetic resonators is emerging as one of the frontiers of condensed matter physics. We found that the enhancement of vacuum field fluctuations in subwavelength split-ring resonators strongly affects one of the most paradigmatic quantum protectorates, the quantum Hall electron transport in high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases. The observed breakdown of the topological protection of the integer quantum Hall effect is interpreted in terms of a long-range cavity-mediated electron hopping where the anti-resonant terms of the light-matter coupling Hamiltonian develop into a finite resistivity induced by the vacuum fluctuations. Our experimental platform can be used for any two-dimensional material and provides a route to manipulate electron phases in matter by means of vacuum-field engineering.

Electro-optic interface for ultrasensitive intracavity electric field measurements at microwave and terahertz frequencies

Electro-optic quantum coherent interfaces map the amplitude and phase of a quantum signal directly to the phase or intensity of a probe beam. At terahertz frequencies, a fundamental challenge is not only to sense such weak signals (due to a weak coupling with a probe in the near-infrared) but also to resolve them in the time domain. Cavity confinement of both light fields can increase the interaction and achieve strong coupling. Using this approach, current realizations are limited to low microwave frequencies. Alternatively, in bulk crystals, electro-optic sampling was shown to reach quantum-level sensitivity of terahertz waves. Yet, the coupling strength was extremely weak. Here, we propose an on-chip architecture that concomitantly provides subcycle temporal resolution and an extreme sensitivity to sense terahertz intracavity fields below 20 V/m. We use guided femtosecond pulses in the near-infrared and a confinement of the terahertz wave to a volume of V T H z ∼ 10 − 9 ( λ T H z / 2 ) 3 in combination with ultraperformant organic molecules ( r 33 = 170 p m / V ) and accomplish a record-high single-photon electro-optic coupling rate of g e o = 2 π × 0.043 G H z , 10,000 times higher than in recent reports of sensing vacuum field fluctuations in bulk media. Via homodyne detection implemented directly on chip, the interaction results into an intensity modulation of the femtosecond pulses. The single-photon cooperativity is C 0 = 1.6 × 10 − 8 , and the multiphoton cooperativity is C = 0.002 at room temperature. We show > --> 70 d B dynamic range in intensity at 500 ms integration under irradiation with a weak coherent terahertz field. Similar devices could be employed in future measurements of quantum states in the terahertz at the standard quantum limit, or for entanglement of subsystems on subcycle temporal scales, such as terahertz and near-infrared quantum bits.

Quantum correlation between optical and terahertz photons generated under multimode spontaneous parametric down-conversion

We study conditions for the generation of strongly correlated photons of two extremely different frequency ranges, optical and terahertz, via the spontaneous parametric down-conversion effect in a nonlinear medium. Analytical expressions for the correlation function are derived using equations of the generalized Kirchhoff law for the second-order field moments with account of both classical thermal and quantum vacuum field fluctuations, possible inherent absorption of the medium at terahertz frequencies, and angular divergences of signal and idler radiation caused by a transverse limited spatial profile of the Gaussian pump beam. Associated with the current absence of terahertz photon counting detectors and coincidence schemes, the possible experimental limitations in measuring the second-order optical-terahertz field correlations are studied. Numerical calculations of noncollinear eee-geometry parametric down-conversion in a $\mathrm{Mg}:\mathrm{LiNb}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ crystal demonstrate angular characteristics, particular features of the temperature and spectral behavior of the second-order quantum correlation function of optical-terahertz biphotons.

Electric field correlation measurements on the electromagnetic vacuum state.

Quantum mechanics ascribes to the ground state of the electromagnetic radiation1 zero-point electric field fluctuations that permeate empty space at all frequencies. No energy can be extracted from the ground state of a system, and therefore these fluctuations cannot be measured directly with an intensity detector. The experimental proof of their existence therefore came from more indirect evidence, such as the Lamb shift2,3,4, the Casimir force between close conductors5,6,7 or spontaneous emission1,8. A direct method of determining the spectral characteristics of vacuum field fluctuations has so far been missing. Here we perform a direct measurement of the field correlation on these fluctuations in the terahertz frequency range by using electro-optic detection9 in a nonlinear crystal placed in a cryogenic environment. We investigate their temporal and spatial coherence, which, at zero time delay and spatial distance, has a peak value of 6.2×10-2volts squared per square metre, corresponding to a fluctuating vacuum field10,11 of 0.25volts per metre. With this measurement, we determine the spectral components of the ground state of electromagnetic radiation within the bandwidth of our electro-optic detection.

Detection of “anomalies” inside microcavities through parametric fluorescence: a formalism based on modulated commutation relations and consequences on the concept of density of states

It has been previously shown [Phys. Rev. A50, 89 (1994)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.50.89] that cavity-based electromagnetic confinement leads to an “anomalous” fields operators commutation relation that is undetectable by probing the cavity with a beam splitter. However, using this commutator in the case of parametric fluorescence (spontaneous parametric down conversion) when it occurs inside an open cavity implies a strong intensification of this process. This prediction can validate, or not, this commutation relation. The ab initio approach used is based entirely on vacuum field fluctuations and does not resort to the concept of density of states. Finally, through a generalization of creation and annihilation operators in the presence of noise, this approach raises fundamental questions about quantum modes. We expect this work to stimulate new theoretical developments and related experiments, which might lead to new applications in quantum nonlinear optics.

Vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction contributions to the resonance dipole-dipole interaction between two atoms near a reflecting boundary

We investigate the resonance dipole-dipole interaction energy between two identical atoms, one in the ground state and the other in the excited state, interacting with the electromagnetic field in the presence of a perfectly reflecting plane boundary. The atoms are prepared in a correlated (symmetric or anti-symmetric) Bell-type state. Following a procedure due to Dalibard et. al. [J. Dalibard et. al., J. Phys. (Paris) {\bf 43}, 1617 (1982); {\bf 45}, 637 (1984)], we separate the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction (source) field to the resonance interaction energy between the two atoms, and show that only the source field contributes to the interatomic interaction, while vacuum field fluctuations do not. By considering specific geometric configurations of the two-atom-system with respect to the mirror and specific choices of dipole orientations, we show that the presence of the mirror significantly affects the resonance interaction energy and that different features appear with respect to the case of atoms in free space, for example a change in the spatial dependence of the interaction. Our findings also suggest that the presence of a boundary can be exploited to tailor and control the resonance interaction between two atoms, as well as the related energy transfer process. The possibility of observing these phenomena is also discussed.

Effect of boundaries on vacuum field fluctuations and radiation-mediated interactions between atoms

In this paper we discuss and review several aspects of the effect of boundary conditions and structured environments on dispersion and resonance interactions involving atoms or molecules, as well as on vacuum field fluctuations. We first consider the case of a perfect mirror, which is free to move around an equilibrium position and whose mechanical degrees of freedom are treated quantum mechanically. We investigate how the quantum fluctuations of the mirror’s position affect vacuum field fluctuations for both a one-dimensional scalar and electromagnetic field, showing that the effect is particularly significant in the proximity of the moving mirror. This result can be also relevant for possible gravitational effects, since the field energy density couples to gravity. We stress that this interaction-induced modification of the vacuum field fluctuations can be probed through the Casimir-Polder interaction with a polarizable body, thus allowing to detect the effect of the mirror’s quantum position fluctuations. We then consider the effect of an environment such as an isotropic photonic crystal or a metallic waveguide, on the resonance interaction between two entangled identical atoms, one excited and the other in the ground state. We discuss the strong dependence of the resonance interaction with the relative position of the atomic transition frequency with the gap of the photonic crystal in the former case, and with the cut-off frequency of waveguide in the latter.

Electroweak vacuum instability and renormalized Higgs field vacuum fluctuations in the inflationary universe

In this work, we investigated the electroweak vacuum instability during or after inflation. In the inflationary Universe, i.e., de Sitter space, the vacuum field fluctuations < δ ϕ 2 > enlarge in proportion to the Hubble scale H2. Therefore, the large inflationary vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs field < δ ϕ 2 > are potentially catastrophic to trigger the vacuum transition to the negative-energy Planck-scale vacuum state and cause an immediate collapse of the Universe. However, the vacuum field fluctuations < δ ϕ 2 >, i.e., the vacuum expectation values have an ultraviolet divergence, and therefore a renormalization is necessary to estimate the physical effects of the vacuum transition. Thus, in this paper, we revisit the electroweak vacuum instability from the perspective of quantum field theory (QFT) in curved space-time, and discuss the dynamical behavior of the homogeneous Higgs field ϕ determined by the effective potential V eff( ϕ ) in curved space-time and the renormalized vacuum fluctuations < δ ϕ 2 >ren via adiabatic regularization and point-splitting regularization. We simply suppose that the Higgs field only couples the gravity via the non-minimal Higgs-gravity coupling ξ(μ). In this scenario, the electroweak vacuum stability is inevitably threatened by the dynamical behavior of the homogeneous Higgs field ϕ, or the formations of AdS domains or bubbles unless the Hubble scale is small enough H< ΛI .

Geometric phase corrections on a moving particle in front of a dielectric mirror

We consider an atom (represented by a two-level system) moving in front of a dielectric plate, and study how traces of dissipation and decoherence (both effects induced by vacuum field fluctuations) can be found in the corrections to the unitary geometric phase accumulated by the atom. We consider the particle to follow a classical, macroscopically-fixed trajectory and integrate over the vacuum field and the microscopic degrees of freedom of both the plate and the particle in order to calculate friction effects. We compute analytically and numerically the non-unitary geometric phase for the moving qubit under the presence of the quantum vacuum field and the dielectric mirror. We find a velocity dependence in the correction to the unitary geometric phase due to quantum frictional effects. We also show in which cases decoherence effects could, in principle, be controlled in order to perform a measurement of the geometric phase using standard procedures as Ramsey-like interferometry.

Quantum Brownian motion in an analog Friedmann-Robertson-Walker geometry

In this paper we study the effects of quantum scalar field vacuum fluctuations on scalar test particles in an analog model for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spatially flat geometry. In this scenario, the cases with one and two perfectly reflecting plane boundaries are considered as well as the case without a boundary. We find that the particles can undergo Brownian motion with a nonzero mean squared velocity induced by the quantum vacuum fluctuations due to the time-dependent background and the presence of the boundaries. Typical singularities which appear due to the presence of the boundaries in flat spacetime can be naturally regularized for an asymptotically bounded expanding scale function. Thus, shifts in the velocity could be, at least in principle, detectable experimentally. The possibility to implement this observation in an analog cosmological model by the use of a Bose-Einstein condensate is also discussed.

Dissipation and decoherence effects on a moving particle in front of a dielectric plate

On this work, we consider a particle moving in front of a dielectric plate, and study two of the most relevant effects of the vacuum field fluctuations: the dissipation, and the decoherence of the particle's internal degrees of freedom. We consider the particle to follow a classical, macroscopically-fixed trajectory. To study the dissipative effects, we calculate the in-out effective action by functionally integrating over the vacuum field and the microscopic degrees of freedom of both the plate and the particle. This in-out effective action develops an imaginary part, hence a non-vanishing probability for the decay (because of friction) of the initial vacuum state. We analyze how the dissipation is affected by the relative velocity between the particle and the plate and the properties of the microscopic degrees of freedom. In order to study the effects of decoherence over the internal degrees of freedom of the particle, we calculate the CTP or Schwinger-Keldysh influence action, by functionally integrating over the vacuum field and the microscopic degrees of freedom of the plate. We estimate the decoherence time as the time needed by two different quantum configurations (of the internal degree of freedom of the particle) to be possible to differentiate from one another. We analyze the way in which the presence of the mirror affects the decoherence, and the possible ways to maximize or reduce its effects.

Quantum radiation from a particle in an accelerated motion coupled to vacuum fluctuations

A particle in a uniformly accelerated motion exhibits Brownian random motions around the classical trajectory due to the coupling to the field vacuum fluctuations. Previous works show that the Brownian random motions satisfy the energy equipartition relation. This thermal property is understood as the consequence of the Unruh effect. In the present work, we investigate the radiation from the thermal random motions of an accelerated particle coupled to vacuum fluctuations. The energy flux of this radiation is negative of the order smaller than the classical radiation by the factor a/m, where a is the acceleration constant and m is the mass of a particle. The results could be understood as a suppression of the classical radiation by the quantum effect.
