Self-Determination Theory and HCI Games Research: Unfulfilled Promises and Unquestioned Paradigms

Self-determination theory (SDT), a psychological theory of human motivation, is a prominent paradigm in human–computer interaction (HCI) research on games. However, our prior literature review observed a trend towards shallow applications of the theory. This follow-up work takes a broader view—examining SDT scholarship on games, a wider corpus of SDT-based HCI games research (N = 259), and perspectives from a games industry practitioner conference—to help explain current applications of SDT. Our findings suggest that perfunctory applications of the theory in HCI games research originate in part from within SDT scholarship on games, which itself exhibits limited engagement with theoretical tenets. Against this backdrop, we unpack the popularity of SDT in HCI games research and identify conditions underlying the theory’s current use as an oft-unquestioned paradigm. Finally, we outline avenues for more productive SDT-informed games research and consider ways towards more intentional practices of theory use in HCI.

The use of human-computer interaction in libraries: a systematic literature review

Purpose This study aims to analyze the status and application/use of human–computer interaction (HCI) in libraries by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR). Design/methodology/approach A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) approach was used to search Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases. The search criteria included research studies published in English language between 2010 and 2021, which were 4,167 citations. Out of 4,167 citations, a total of 50 studies were selected for the final analysis. Findings The results showed a positive attitude of librarians toward HCI applications in libraries worldwide. The results depict that one-third (30%) of the studies were conducted in the USA, followed by four (8%) studies in China. Out of 50 studies, a portion of 15 (30%) studies were based on digital libraries, followed by seven (14%) studies on academic libraries and five (10%) studies on libraries and their websites. HCI was used for searching and retrieving information, users’ interaction, authentication, online help/support, feedback, library web access, web OPAC, virtual access to resources, indigenous repository and virtual services. The most productive year was 2015, and journal of The Electronic Library had more articles on HCI than other journals. Practical implications The findings of this study could assist policymakers and library authorities in reconciling the HCI application in libraries for providing effective and efficient access and services to end-users. Originality/value This study is unique as no comprehensive study has been conducted on the use of HCI in librarianship using the SLR method.

CHR vs. Human-Computer Interaction Design for Emerging Technologies: Two Case Studies

Recent years have seen a surge in interest in the multifaceted topic of human-computer interaction (HCI). Since the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the significance of human-computer interaction in the field of safety risk management has only grown. There has not been a lot of focus on developing human-computer interaction for identifying potential hazards in buildings. After conducting a comprehensive literature review, we developed a study framework for the use of human-computer interaction in the identification of construction-related hazards (CHR-HCI). Future studies will focus on the intersection of computer vision, VR, and ergonomics. In this research, we have built a theoretical foundation for past studies’ findings and connections and offered concrete recommendations for the improvement of HCI in danger identification in the future. Moreover, we analyzed two cases studies related to the domain of CHR-HCI in terms of wearable vibration-based systems and context aware navigation.

ABSTRACT The series Black Mirror, broadcast between 2011 and 2023 on Netflix, has become a media phenomenon and its episodes have shown ways of human-computer interaction. The series’ name refers to the fact that when a screen is turned off, it becomes a black mirror that reflects the user’s image. This paper1 aims to analyze the side effects of human-computer interaction in Black Mirror’s production organizations. This research used discourse analysis, mainly from Mikhail Bakhtin’s contributions. The method consisted of three stages that relied on the collaboration of Industrial Engineering students. The research included undergraduate and postgraduate students working collectively, since this procedure integrates teaching and research and helps beginners develop a critical sense. The results indicate that in Black Mirror organizations there is a transition from the concept of human factors to cyborg factors, as well as the use of human-computer interaction to promote social control.

User Experience Design of Text Creation Products Based on Human-Computer Interaction System

This paper investigates the use of human-computer interaction in the user experience design of cultural and creative products. Based on human-computer interaction, a human-computer system model of user experience design is constructed, and human-computer interaction is used to clarify the relationship between "user-cultural product-cultural environment". In addition, the cultural contact points of users are identified from the cultural experience layer, and finally, the feasibility of the method is verified through design cases. With the purpose of strengthening users' cultural experience, it analyzes users' cultural experience process using human-computer interaction, defines experience points from it and then completes the design. Starting from the source of users' initial contact with culture experience, the process of cultural experience of users before contacting physical products is deeply explored, and the design points of user experience are sorted out and optimized by taking Tujia brocade cultural and creative products as an example (products include Internet products and physical products). Ultimately, the Tujia brocade cultural service website is used as a carrier to deliver the user experience design of cultural and creative products for the purpose of optimizing cultural experience.

Assessing young children's national identity through human-computer interaction: A game-based assessment task.

As a way of human-computer interaction, game-based assessment is more suitable for young children because it is situational, interesting, and effective. National identity is an important factor affecting the overall development of young children and the future development of a country, which has attracted extensive attention from researchers. Nevertheless, the assessment of young children's national identity is still based on traditional evaluation, including questionnaires and interviews, which have the limitations of being inaccurate, dull, and time-consuming. To understand the characteristics of children's national identity, it is necessary to use scientific and interactive assessment methods. The present study investigated whether the game-based assessment we developed specifically would be an appropriate tool to measure young children's national identity. The results show that the game-based assessment had good item discrimination. Exploratory factor analysis demonstrated the game covered three aspects: national cognition mastery, national emotion engagement, and national behavior tendency. The confirmatory factor analysis suggested that the model with three factors fit the data well. The internal consistency, the split-half reliability, and the test-retest reliability meet standards. Overall, the results indicated that this game can be successfully used to assess young children's national identity with acceptable validity and reliability. Our study provides strong evidence for the use of human-computer interaction in child measurement. These findings are the first to demonstrate the promise of game-based assessment in assessing children's national identity reliably and effectively.

A Generalized Review Of Human-Computer Interaction Using Electromyogram Signals

Abstract: The primary use of human computer interaction is in smart home as well as in industry 4.0. Communication between computer and human can be benefitted by a spontaneous interchange of emotions. The objective of the work is to provide an idea regarding the process of identifying various emotions using facial electromyography signals through electrode placement method. Here one contemplated the facial electromyography on masticatory function assessment and emotional articulation monitoring. Furthermore, we have also presented the measurement of facial electromyography including selection of electrode, location of electrode and reduction of noise. Facial emotions have significant effect on cognitive process of the human brain such as doubt perception, ability to solve problems, learning capabilities, emotional interactions and memory which is beneficial while interacting with patients suffering from depression and stress. The patients are guided through their rehabilitation process by rehabilitation application while accustoming itself to patient’s emotional state or wellbeing, which results in high motivation as well as in a quicker. This review paper will motivate and inspire researchers and engineers for finding more suitable system for various applications.

Introduction to the Special Issue on First-Person Methods in HCI

In this introduction to the special issue on First-Person Methods in (Human-Computer Interaction) HCI, we present a brief overview of first-person methods, their origin, and their use in Human-Computer Interaction. We also detail the difference between first-person methods, second-person, and third-person methods, as a way to guide the reader when engaging the special issue articles. We articulate our motivation for putting together this special issue: we wanted a collection of works that would allow HCI researchers to develop further, define, and outline practices, techniques and implications of first-person methods. We trace links between the articles in this special issue and conclude with questions and directions for future work in this methodological space: working with boundaries, risk, and accountability.

Working memory enhancement during early childhood based on the utilization of interactive gesture game-based learning technique

<p>The use of human computer interaction is considered to be the most culturally and socially meritorious for the learning and playing activities of children. In this paper, a human interaction recognition system (HIRS) that includes gesture game-based learning is investigated for identifying its suitability and applicability in stimulation of working memory and primitive mathematical skills among the children in the early childhood period that ranges from 5 and 8 years. In the proposed human interaction recognition system, the hand gestures are facilitated by the user for the objective of controlling the computer system based on the information extracted from the user gestures.This proposed research was implemented in three phases using a quasi-experimental design that in turn incorporates pre-test and post-test for investigating the behavior of experimental and control group considered from the respondents. In the first phase, the initial evaluation of the learner’s skill is achieved. The second phase used the developed technology in order to identify diversified parameters in different dimensions that contribute towards the assessment of working memory and primitive mathematical capabilities. Finally, the third phase is responsible for actual evaluation. In the phases of evaluation, four working memory tests such as forward Corsi Blocking-Tapping test, backward Corsi Blocking-Tapping test, Forward Digit Span test and backwardDigit Span test was conducted. In addition, the evaluation was also conducted for assessing primitive mathematical skill of children using TEDI-MATH. The results confirmed that Gesture Interactive Game-Based Learning (GIGL) used by the children exhibited a predominant improvement in the working memory and primitive mathematical skills on par with their usual school activities.</p>

Terminal Traction Control of Teleoperation Manipulator With Random Jitter Disturbance Based on Active Disturbance Rejection Sliding Mode Control

The present study proposes an active disturbance rejection sliding mode traction control system to deal with the dramatic change of joint angular acceleration and jitter attributed to non-uniform traction during terminal traction of the manipulator based on the use of human-computer interaction (HCI) device, as well as achieve the high-precision and high-speed terminal traction control. First, the traction trajectory generated by the HCI device is mapped into the motion space of the manipulator, and a low-pass filter is employed to filter out the high-frequency noises attributed to non-uniform traction. Second, the corresponding joint solution of the traction trajectory is solved by using the inverse kinematics algorithm. Then the nonlinear and strongly coupled manipulator is linearly decoupled. Lastly, the effect of non-uniform traction on the manipulator’s joints is considered as interference, and an active disturbance rejection sliding mode controller is introduced for each joint. To reduce the chattering, the output torque of the controller is processed with a low-pass filter. The stability of the controller is proved with the Lyapunov method. To verify the traction effect of the traction control system and its anti-interference ability for non-uniform traction, the trajectory tracking experiment with random jitter and the real terminal traction control experiment is performed on the UR5 manipulator in the virtual robot experiment platform. As revealed from the experimentally achieved results, the proposed controller can significantly limit the effect of non-uniform traction on each joint of the manipulator and achieve the fast, stable, and high-precision terminal traction control of the manipulator by the HCI device.

Research on the methods of BIM reliability prediction with the construction schedule in the application of project of Chushandian reservoir

With the development of BIM (building information model), based on the existing construction management theory, combined with the idea of intelligent construction, fully integrating BIM and 4D technology, we can realize the optimization of construction schedule and real-time perception and control of the actual progress of construction. In this paper, the design model is built on the basis of 3D digital technology and CATIA software as the carrier. In the Sql Server database management system as the platform, with the use of information management platform data, the 4D BIM model has been formed, and the schedule control system has been applicated in the Chushandian reservoir project, preliminarily implemented schedule monitoring target. Chushandian project application shows that to achieve the progress of data entry, the use of human-computer interaction realized the dynamic simulation of the progress of the interactive query and other data. The comparison of schedule deviation can be achieved by entering the schedule and actual progress into the network database; through the analysis of abnormal records, and the formulation of measures, the realization of schedule can be ensured.

Ratings are Overrated!

Are ratings of any use in human-computer interaction and user studies at large? If ratings are of limited use, is there a better alternative for quantitative subjective assessment? Beyond the intrinsic shortcomings of human reporting, there are a number of supplementary limitations and fundamental methodological flaws associated with rating-based questionnaires --- i.e. questionnaires that ask participants to rate their level of agreement with a given statement such as a Likert item. While the effect of these pitfalls has been largely downplayed, recent findings from diverse areas of study question the reliability of using ratings. Rank-based questionnaires --- i.e. questionnaires that ask participants to rank two or more options --- appear as the evident alternative that not only eliminates the core limitations of ratings but also simplifies the use of sound methodologies that yield more reliable models of the underlying reported construct: user emotion, preference, or opinion. This paper solicits recent findings from various disciplines interlinked with psychometrics and offers a quick guide for the use, processing and analysis of rank-based questionnaires for the unique advantages they offer. The paper challenges the traditional state-of-practice in human-computer interaction and psychometrics directly contributing towards a paradigm shift in subjective reporting.

Clasp Together: Composing for Mind and Machine

This paper will explore questions of agency, control and interaction and the embodied nature of musical performance in relation to the use of human-computer interaction (HCI), through the experimental work Clasp Together (beta) [1] for small ensemble and live electronics by J. Harry Whalley. This practice-led research is situated at the intersection of music neurotechnology for sound synthesis and brain-computer interfaces (BCI, a subdomain of HCI), and explores the use of neural patterns from Electroencephalography (EEG) as a control instrument. The composition departed from the traditional composer/performer paradigm by using both non-instrumental physical gestures and cognitive or emotive instructions integrated into the score.

Brain Musics: History, Precedents, and Commentary on Whalley, Mavros and Furniss

Whalley, Mavros and Furniss (this issue) explore questions of agency, control and interaction, as well as the embodied nature of musical performance in relation to the use of human-computer interaction through the work Clasp Together (beta) for small ensemble and live electronics. The underlying concept of the piece focuses on direct mapping of a human neural network (embodied by a performer within the ensemble) to an artificial neural network running on a computer. With our commentary, we contextualize the work by offering a brief history of music that uses brainwaves. We review the use of EEG signals for musical performance and point at precedents in EEG-based musical practice. We hope to more clearly situate Clasp Together (beta) in the broad area of Brain Computer Musical Interfaces and discuss the challenges and opportunities that these technologies offer for composers.

Building it better: Applying human–computer interaction and persuasive system design principles to a monetary limit tool improves responsible gambling

In two studies, we aimed to improve the responsible gambling (RG) utility of monetary limit tools for non-disordered Electronic Gambling Machine (EGM) players – the target population for such prevention-oriented RG tools. To this end, based on feedback from focus groups with non-disordered EGM players, we created a new monetary limit tool that incorporated EGM players’ desired functionality coupled with design fundamentals of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Persuasive Systems Design (PSD; Study 1). We then tested the newly created HCI and PSD inspired tool and compared its RG utility (limit adherence) against a standard monetary limit tool (Study 2). Non-disordered EGM players were randomly assigned to experience the HCI and PSD inspired or the standard monetary tool prior to gambling in a virtual realty casino. As predicted, participants adhered to their pre-set monetary limits more (92%), when exposed to the HCI and PSD inspired pop-up tool than the standard monetary limit tool (62.2%). Improving RG tools through the use of HCI and PSD principles is discussed.

On the use of Human-Computer Interaction for Projected Nearest Neighbor Search

Nearest Neighbor search is an important and widely used technique in a number of important application domains. In many of these domains, the dimensionality of the data representation is often very high. Recent theoretical results have shown that the concept of proximity or nearest neighbors may not be very meaningful for the high dimensional case. Therefore, it is often a complex problem to find good quality nearest neighbors in such data sets. Furthermore, it is also difficult to judge the value and relevance of the returned results. In fact, it is hard for any fully automated system to satisfy a user about the quality of the nearest neighbors found unless he is directly involved in the process. This is especially the case for high dimensional data in which the meaningfulness of the nearest neighbors found is questionable. In this paper, we address the complex problem of high dimensional nearest neighbor search from the user perspective by designing a system which uses effective cooperation between the human and the computer. The system provides the user with visual representations of carefully chosen subspaces of the data in order to repeatedly elicit his preferences about the data patterns which are most closely related to the query point. These preferences are used in order to determine and quantify the meaningfulness of the nearest neighbors. Our system is not only able to find and quantify the meaningfulness of the nearest neighbors, but is also able to diagnose situations in which the nearest neighbors found are truly not meaningful.

A Short History of HCI Research and Trends Published in the Journal Human Factors from 1984 to 2004

This study was undertaken to explore the history of the use of the term human-computer-interaction (HCI) over two decades of the journal Human Factors. Results show that while some work may have been accomplished in the first ten years, the work wasn't identified as HCI, except at a rate of approximately two articles per year. After 1995 the incidence in the use of HCI as a topical reference increased, and from 2001 – 2004 there were significantly more articles on this topic. The articles were written by scientists around the world, employed in all areas of the field. This research attempts to show how HCI has evolved over these 20 years, to identify any trends in the research, and to provide suggestions for future research, including search methodologies. Specific information will be provided to use in planning future work, such as procedures, descriptions of apparatus, dependent variables and other methodological information.

Enhanced gesture capture in virtual interactive space (VIS)

This article reports on the capture of human movement information which is made possible from a commercially affordable and readily available technology complimented by a simple enhancement which results in an extended virtual volume of 3D high resolution activated air being created and available for intervention as a basic computer interface. Through examples presenting the use of the methodology in performance art, education and human performance projects, this article hints at the opportunities from such a methodology so as to inspire others to explore the potential use in human computer interaction (HCI).

Speech-based cursor control

Speech recognition can be a powerful tool for use in human-computer interaction. Many researchers are investigating the use of speech recognition systems for dictation-based activities, resulting in dramatic improvements in recent years. However, this same experimentation has confirmed that recognition errors and the delays inherent with speech recognition result in unacceptably long task completion times and error rates for cursor control tasks. This study explores the potential of a speech-controlled grid-based cursor control mechanism. An experiment evaluated two alternative grid-based solutions, both using 3-3 grids. One provided a single cursor in the middle of the grid. The second allows users to select a target using any of nine cursors. The results confirm that the nine-cursor solution allowed users to select targets of varying size, distance and direction significantly faster than the one-cursor solution. Overall results are encouraging when compared to earlier evaluations of other speech-based cursor control solutions.
