Ghost Publications and Research Misrepresentation in the 2023-2024 Plastic Surgery Common Application.

United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 Pass/Fail grading has increased the emphasis of research productivity as a quantitative metric in residency applications. Quantifying discrepancies between self-reported and verified research publications can elucidate the extent of research misrepresentation in submitted residency applications. A retrospective review of 339 residency applications to our institution's integrated plastic surgery residency program in the 2023-2024 application cycle was performed. The number of self-reported publications reported between applicants' plastic surgery common application (PSCA) and curriculum vitae (CV) were recorded. Self-reported publications were denoted as verified if a publication record was identified with an independent internet search. The mean number of self-reported and verified total peer-reviewed publications was 10.8 and 7.4, respectively. In 9.1% (31/339) of applicants, unverified manuscripts or discrepancies between self-reported and verified author lists were identified. Unpublished manuscripts and publication records of nonpeer-reviewed abstract presentation records were self-reported under the PSCA total number of proportion of unmatched applicants (62%) versus matched applicants (48%) misrepresented unpublished manuscripts or nonpeer-reviewed abstract presentation records as peer-reviewed publications (P = 0.011). Several types of discrepancies between self-reported and verified research publications were identified in PSCA applications. Discrepancies may result from PSCA prompt misinterpretation, inadvertent misclassification, or applicant misrepresentation or falsification. Efforts to standardize the reporting and verification of research in residency applications are needed.

Marx’s systematic interrogation of civilizational morphology—articulated through exhaustive analyses spanning published treatises and unpublished manuscripts that map sociocivilizational evolution—provides the conceptual matrix for engaging the new paradigm’s emergence. This dialectical engagement facilitates theoretical advancement by synthesizing Marxian axioms with contemporary historical praxis. Articulating the new paradigm’s praxiological significance through its symbiosis with empirically validated developmental trajectories constitutes not merely an epistemic imperative for theory-practice synthesis, but more critically, a strategic mobilization of civilizational forces toward emancipatory progress. The paradigm’s profound contemporaneity demands urgent systematic explication.

Spotify is giving $50,000 in grants to authors of unpublished stories featuring ‘exceptional’ depictions of mental health, Variety reported Feb. 12. The company is partnering with The Black List, a platform for filmmakers and writers to showcase projects to industry professionals, and The Jed Foundation (JED), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping prevent suicide for teens and young adults, to launch the Spotify x JED Impact Award. The impact award will provide $10,000 grants to five authors of unpublished manuscripts that feature “exceptional depictions” of mental health in fiction, with the goal of diversifying mental health narratives in fiction, the company says. As part of the initiative, Spotify will cover fee waivers to allow up to 140 writers to receive a free month of hosting and a free evaluation on The Black List platform. Submissions are open beginning Feb. 12 on The Black List's website at this link (available for English‐language manuscripts globally) and will close July 8, 2025.

Biodiversity of Bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila) in Connecticut (USA).

In response to calls for national and regional updated inventories of bee species, we present a county-level checklist for 385 confirmed bee (Apoidea: Anthophila) species for Connecticut, USA, highlighting rare and regionally declining species, species that have specific habitat and/or host requirements, and species whose taxonomy and distribution we wish to clarify. We have compiled a comprehensive, digitized database of historic and current bee records from Connecticut to inform this checklist, which includes specimen records from museums, recent collections, and community science observations from iNaturalist.com. All images of bees from Connecticut on iNaturalist (18,471 observations) have been fully vetted by one or more of the authors, which is unprecedented for a state project. We summarize historical bee research in Connecticut and provide current information regarding the distribution of bee species, changes in status, phenology, habitat usage, and floral associations within the state. At least 43 of 385 species represented in collections or literature have not been detected in Connecticut since the year 2000. These and other species of conservation concern are discussed with reference to a quantitative assessment of changes in range within the state. In addition, we have calculated and report state-level ranks for 124 bee species in Connecticut. We corroborate regional loss of species including Coelioxys funerarius Smith and Holcopasites illinoiensis (Robertson) and clarify and extend the distribution of numerous bee species in the Northeastern United States. Furthermore, we discuss morphospecies, excluded species, and species expected for Connecticut. We also validate synonymies reported previously online based on an unpublished manuscript by Roy Snelling for the following species: Nomada depressa Cresson (= N. hoodiana Cockerell; = N. carinicauda Cockerell; = N. media Mitchell); Nomada obliterata Cresson (= N. decepta Mitchell); Nomada vicina Cresson (= N. beulahensis Cockerell; = N. vicina stevensi Swenk). In addition, we recognize three new synonyms of Nomada xanthura Cockerell (= N. ochlerata Mitchell; = N. detrita Mitchell; = N. mendica Mitchell) and report the first Nomada townesi Mitchell from outside of Maryland. In addition to N. townesi, the following eleven native species are newly reported or recently confirmed for Connecticut: Andrena (Cnemidandrena) parnassi----ae Cockerell; Andrena (Melandrena) sayi Robertson; Andrena (Trachandrena) rehni Viereck; Anthophora bomboides Kirby; Nomada armatella Cockerell; Nomada electella Cockerell; Nomada placida Cresson; Lasioglossum (Dialictus) cattellae (Ellis); Lasioglossum (Dialictus) ellisiae (Sandhouse); Lasioglossum (Dialictus) fattigi (Mitchell); Lasioglossum (Dialictus) trigeminum Gibbs. The following recent arrivals among non-native species are confirmed: Pseudoanthidium (Pseudoanthidium) nanum (Mocsáry); Coelioxys (Allocoelioxys) coturnix Pérez; Osmia (Osmia) taurus Smith. This work is a stepping stone towards a larger, ongoing effort to clarify bee distribution and status in New England. As such, we also report updates for the bee fauna of the following states: Massachusetts-Melissodes communis communis Cresson; Megachile (Eutricharaea) apicalis Spinola), Maine-Chelostoma philadelphi (Robertson), and New Hampshire-Lasioglossum nelumbonis (Robertson).

Titus Hotnog – Memoirist

The prose writer and philologist Titus Hotnosg (18901957) is the author of the short prose volume Vrăbioiul alb [The White Cocksparrow] (Iași, 1936) but also of several philological studies. In 2005, the philologist Ion Nuță, accompanied in his approach by the teacher Ioan Dănilă, both of Bacău, published a collection of writings by Titus Hotnog in two volumes. The first volume, Vrăbioiul alb şi alte scrieri literare [The White Cocksparrow and other Literary Writings] includes short stories and sketches (some of which were published only in periodicals). The second volume, titled Viaţa mea (Jurnal). Scrieri lingvistice [My Life (A Journal). Linguistic Writings], includes several philological studies but also reproduces an unpublished manuscript by Titus Hotnog which presents information about the most important stages in his life. The text is serious and documents not only the author’s life but also events and people who influenced destinies and made their way into pages of history.

Dreaming Sufism in the Sokoto Caliphate: Dreams and Knowledge in the Works of Shaykh Dan Tafa

Abstract This article explores five remarkable works (currently in unpublished manuscript form) by ʿAbd al-Qādir b. Muṣṭafā (known as “Dan Tafa”) (1804–1864), a 19th-century West African Sufi scholar of the Sokoto Caliphate, to examine the ways in which dreams were (and are) theorized in the unique synthesis of Sufi, occult, philosophical/medical, theological, and exegetical disciplines that characterized discourse about dreams and dream interpretation in Muslim West Africa on the eve of colonial conquest. Concluding with a brief discussion of what these texts can tell us about Dan Tafa’s conceptions of cosmology, knowledge, and the human self, and the importance thereof for African and Islamic intellectual history, we will also consider the potential relevance of Dan Tafa’s work for the importance and onto-epistemological status of dreams in contemporary West African Sufi communities and attempt to understand why dreams have been and remain so important in these traditions.

Dworkin on Ordinary Language Philosophy and Legal Principles before the “Hart–Dworkin Debate”

The work of Ronald Dworkin was central to the development of twentieth-century anglophone legal philosophy. This article offers the first discussion of a previously unknown and unpublished book manuscript by Dworkin which shows that he initially grounded his early legal thought in a wide-ranging methodological framework centered on ordinary language philosophy. Amidst heated debates over the draft for the Vietnam War, Dworkin developed a modified version of ordinary language analysis which, he contended, facilitated a critical stance towards what he called “conventional morality.” In this light, the widely acknowledged influence of the legal process school on Dworkin's early work appears as a transition from an earlier engagement with ordinary language philosophy. I conclude by tracing how Dworkin shifted towards the legal process school and how this reshaped the theoretical ambitions of his legal thought.

The unpublished manuscript He Yao Zong Bu in the Wu Medicine School

From the perspective of philology, this study is the first to explore the author information,manuscript content,and literary value of the unpublished and unique manuscript He Yao Zong Bu. Firstly, by examining the physician's birth year, residence, social interactions and handwriting style, it can be determined that the manuscript's author is Yang Shoushan, a renowned doctor of the Shicai School of the Wumen Medical School during the Qing Dynasty. He Yao Zong Bu is one of the two traceable manuscripts currently known that have been handed down by Yang. Secondly,the main content of this book is Yang Shoushan's compilation of nearly 400 surgical formulas and their preparation methods drawn from previous medical experts in Suzhou. The book is concise in structure and rich in formulas,providing a substantial amount of reference material for future generations to study the characteristics of surgical diagnosis and treatment in the Wumen Medical School and summarize surgical thought. Thirdly, the manuscript He Yao Zong Bu contributes rich documentary material to the analysis of the academic thought of Yang Shoushan, a physician of the Shicai School of the Wumen Medical School, medicine. It also provides solid documentary evidence for elucidating the style and pattern of Chen Xintian's surgical formulas,a famous surgeon of the Wumen Medical School.

The discussion of the cultural-cognitive aspects of the Geor­gian tran­slations of the most difficult text of the Old Testament, „Song of Songs“, is connected with many difficulties. Because such high texts are characterized by hiding and obscuring themselves, covering the composition, disguising them­selves through allegorical contexts. The places to be analyzed in the Geor­gian editions of this book of King Solomon are compared with each other, as well as with the academic text of the Septuagint, the Septuagint accom­pa­nied by a literal Hebrew translation, the Sinic and Venetian codices of the Septuagint. Georgian editions of the Bible used: Revision O – The Oshk or Athos Bible and Jerusalem Codex of 978 Digi­tized by Zurab Sarjveladze and Jost Gippert; Redaction of the S-Mtskheta Bible according to an unpubli­shed ma­nus­cript of the 17th –18th centuries; Editorial – Α unpublished manuscript of the 17th century; Edition Β – the text of the Moscow Bible of 1743. The paper presents the exegesis of the context and megatext of the Georgian title „Song of Songs“ 2. The dramaturgy of remarks in the Georgian translation and the Septuagint Remarque code. The article analyzes the most important cultural and cognitive aspects of Georgian translations of the „Song of Songs“. The translation of the title is not literal, since Georgian translators and editors instead of „song“ („Άσμα Ασμάτων“,) chose the lexeme „praise“, „the best prai­­­se“. This reduplicated form, which expresses the superlative deg­ree, has the contexts of both „praise“ and „singing“. The choice of this lexeme is deliberate, since the Song of Songs was read alle­gorically. In the Georgian Bible (edition A), it is directly indicated in the title that this is a praise of the Most Holy Theotokos, the best of blessings. In the ancient Oshk Bible, verse 1 is missing. 1. In all ancient translations, except for the Syriac translation of the Peshita, the title says „song“. And in the Syriac translation of Peshita the lexeme is „Wisdom of Wisdom“ (Lo­pukhin). In the Old Armenian translation there is also a song „Երգ Երգոց“. Despite the fact that the so-called Bakar Bible (1743) was compared with the Slavic edition of the Bible, nothing has changed in the translation of the title „Song of Songs“. The Georgian tradition won. In the Georgian editions there are remarks. The appearance of remarks, on the one hand, is caused by the absence of the category of gender in the Georgian language. Remarks are absent in the Hebrew text, as well as in many codices of the Septuagint. As far as possible, we compa­red the remarks of all the Georgian editions under consideration with the remarks of the Sinaiticus Codex of the Septuagint of the 4th century and tried to determine their place in the artistic fabric of the text. It is very likely that the Georgian monks from the Sinai monastery were well acquainted with this codex. In the Mtskheta Bible-S, more de­tailed, expanded remarks, which play a large role in the composition of the „Song of Songs“.

BORROWED ILLUSTRATIONS OF GLOSSOPETRAE WITH SHARK’S HEAD: STENO AND THE VATICAN COLLECTION OF MERCATI

ABSTRACT It is well known that fossils of shark’s teeth were named as ‘tongue stones’ (glossopetrae in Latin) because of their similarity in shape to the tongues of animals. However, Nicolaus Steno (1638–1686) decidedly revised this kind of explanation in the latter half of the seventeenth century. He recognized them as shark’s teeth in his treatise of 1667, adopting the figures of a shark head with teeth in its mouth and fossil ‘tongue stones’ borrowed from the then unpublished manuscript on the Vatican mineral collection by Michele Mercati of San Miniato (1541–1593). This article reconsiders the role of the palaeontological illustrations in this process because Mercati himself had recognized the similarity of the shapes of the shark teeth and glossopetrae but he could not neglect the difference of material between them. Although Steno’s skill as a comparative anatomist convinced him of the organic origin of the fossils, there were still problems of sedimentation to solve. We will first review the opinions of early modern naturalists concerning fossil objects and then focus on how Steno solved the problem to pave the way for his epoch-making dissertation Prodromus (1669). At the same time, we will pay attention to how the set of figures would continue to be borrowed by such authors as Paolo Silvio Boccone (1674), Michael Bernhard Valentini (1704), and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1749, originally circa 1691). In the meantime, the original manuscript with figures was published in 1717 as Metallotheca Vaticana by Giovanni Maria Lancisi, the Italian anatomist and one of Steno’s acquaintances. Lancisi made annotations to this text that suggested the fossil controversy was evolving, citing the names of Cesalpino, Steno, Boccone, and Vallisneri. Thus, we can understand how the illustrations with its hidden text functioned well in the fossil controversy by the strategic usage by Steno of the Vatican collection, a sort of ‘museum on paper’.

Abstract For a long time, the editorial presentation of Alexander von Humboldt’s œuvre did not do justice to its significance. Only after the publication of the collected papers, articles and essays (2019/21) has it become possible to assess the transformations between his non-book publications and his larger works: Humboldt’s books emerged from his smaller writings and his contributions to journals and periodicals. They were often not conceived as autonomous monographs but were made up of various elements that the author processed in fragmentary and polyphonic forms into polygraphs. Based on this conception of his transformative method of writing and publishing, Humboldt’s Kleinere Schriften, a self-curated collection of his own texts, can now be edited for the first time, complementing the first volume, published in 1853, with the second, whose unpublished manuscripts and proofs are preserved in Berlin and Krakow as well as in the archive of his publisher Cotta in Marbach.

Cerebellar rTMS for Enhancing Coordination in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis: A Narrative Review

Purpose of Review: Cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has gained attention as a potential therapeutic intervention for neurological disorders. Recently, there has been growing interest in its use to improve coordination in patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). This review aims to examine and discuss the current evidence on the effectiveness of cerebellar rTMS in enhancing motor coordination in individuals with MS. Methods: A comprehensive search of Science Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar was conducted using keywords such as multiple sclerosis, cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, coordination, and neurorehabilitation. Articles published from January 2012 to July 2024 were included, and only English-language studies were reviewed. Unpublished manuscripts, conference abstracts, and studies not involving larger scientific investigations were excluded. Results: The findings suggest that cerebellar rTMS, when combined with conventional rehabilitation methods, has the potential to improve coordination in PwMS. However, the available evidence is limited, and larger, more rigorous studies are needed to confirm these findings and establish standardized treatment protocols. Conclusion: Current literature indicates that cerebellar rTMS holds promise as a supplementary intervention for improving coordination in PwMS. Further high-quality trials are required to support its clinical application and to better understand the underlying mechanisms.

An Unpublished Manuscript of Hugo Grotius: ‘On Public Partnership with Unbelievers’ (De societate publica cum infidelibus): Introduction, Transcription and English Translation

Abstract This introduction presents an analysis of Grotius’s treatise ‘On Public Partnership with Unbelievers’ (De societate publica cum infidelibus). It was probably written between 1606 and 1609, when Grotius served as a legal advisor of the Dutch East India Company (voc). In his treatise, Grotius explains what kinds of partnerships with non-Christians are permissible under divine and natural law. These include public partnerships, such as treaties and military alliances, but also private associations, such as commercial contracts, marriages and relations of servitude. As we argue in this introduction, De societate can be interpreted as a general treatise on legal partnerships with non-Christians, which relates both to the voc’s policies of treaty and alliance-making in the East Indies and to debates about the legal status of religious minorities in the Dutch Republic.

Dispositifs pulsionnels et économies de la subjectivation : actualités de Nietzsche au prisme de Pierre Klossowski

This article aims to reposition Nietzsche's thought within contemporary fields of research through the prism of its reception by Pierre Klossowski. Our analysis makes use of Klossowski's unpublished manuscripts, allowing us to better articulate and situate Nietzsche's thought within Klossowski's thought, which is nourished by a dialogue that goes beyond his work devoted to Nietzsche and develops an analysis that is particularly amenable to updating. In developing a Nietzsche-informed general economy of subjectivation, Klossowskian theory tends toward various aspects of theoretical explorations present in media thought and the posthumanities. In doing so, we show that Nietzsche's thought, as approached by Klossowski, allows for unprecedented connections that shed light on the genealogy of the posthumanities, conceptually enrich research in Media archaeology and Science and Technology Studies, and anticipate the crucial role of affect and information in contemporary processes of subjectivation.

The Socio-Ecological Factors Associated with Mental Health Problems and Resilience in Refugees: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Despite the immense challenges to mental health faced by refugees, research consistently finds that many nevertheless demonstrate remarkable resilience. However, a systematic account of the scientific literature on resilience among refugees is currently lacking. This paper aims to fill that gap by comprehensively reviewing research on protective and risk factors affecting refugees' resilience and mental health problems across four socio-ecological levels: individual, family, community, and society. We conducted a systematic search in the databases PsycINFO, Web of Science, and SocINDEX, as well as contacted topic experts to seek out unpublished manuscripts. This yielded 223 studies (171 quantitative, 52 qualitative), which were subjected to systematic content coding. We found consistent evidence for substantive risk factors, including traumatic experiences and gender at the individual level and postmigration stress and unemployment at the societal level. We found social support to be a clear protective factor at the family and community levels. We discuss these findings in the context of policy and intervention programs and make recommendations at different socio-ecological levels for supporting refugees' resilience.

Asking About the ‘Unspeakable’: Joan Ringelheim and Early Research on Sexual Violence and Same-Sex Practices among Women During the Holocaust

ABSTRACT This article examines feminist scholar Joan Ringelheim’s inquiry about sexual violence and same-sex practices among women during the Holocaust. Drawing on her unpublished manuscript, drafts of conference papers, correspondence, and grassroots oral history interviews in addition to her published work, this article examines how Ringelheim’s analysis of these two topics changed over time. Between the late 1970s to the mid-1990s, Ringelheim worked in a variety of professional roles as a philosophy professor, independent scholar, and an employee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. In each of these positions, she initiated conversations with survivors, scholars, feminist activists, and museum workers, and contributed to innovative conceptual frameworks about these issues that influenced scholarship for decades. Her work was met with both support and considerable hostility. To understand why this was the case, this article historicizes Ringelheim’s efforts within contemporary contexts, including American Jewish debates about the Jewish family, feminist debates about sexuality and women’s history, and the rise of Holocaust consciousness in the United States. My contention is that as Ringelheim asked questions about sexuality during the Holocaust, she had to not only begin to disentangle decades of compounded silencing and mythologization, but she also needed to navigate various forms of pushback related to these debates.

An account of the natural history and exploitation of the great auk (Pinguinus impennis) in ‘Histoire des pesches’, an illustrated eighteenth-century manuscript

The hunting of the great auk ( Pinguinus impennis), which led to its extinction in the mid-nineteenth century, is well documented. However, the discovery of archives providing new details on this species is a rare event. A manuscript dealing with seabirds and their ‘fishing’, written in 1720–1722 by François Le Masson du Parc (1671–1741), an attaché for the Normandy maritime administration, was acquired in 2019 from an auction house. This unpublished and unstudied manuscript comprises the sixth and final volume of the ‘Histoire des pesches’. As part of a national policy to regulate French maritime fisheries, Le Masson du Parc completed the description of marine resources and fisheries in his ‘Histoire des pesches’ which was abundantly illustrated by Pierre Le Chevalier (1688–after 1763). However, this monumental work was never published and the manuscripts were dispersed after the author's death. The section recently purchased provides valuable information on the spatiotemporal evolution of many populations of North Atlantic seabirds, including the great auk, in a context of anthropogenic pressures. This species is named using several hitherto unknown Latin and vernacular names of great importance for the exploration or reinterpretation of archives. It is mentioned as common and one of the most popular birds consumed by cod fishermen on the banks of Newfoundland and that it was caught using baited hooks from boats. The text is accompanied by two illustrations, including a life drawing of three great auks, which are among the oldest known illustrations of the species. These 300-year-old archives constitute a valuable testimony for the historical ecology of this iconic, extinct bird.
