Statistical literacy of undergraduate students in Indonesia: survey studies

Nowadays, statistics based information is widely used by various institutions and social media, therefore statistical literacy as an essential knowledge has been recognized by various modern countries is something that must be owned by every citizen in recent information-based society. Students need statistical knowledge and skills so that they will be able to apply it in their studies and daily life. This study aims to assess the level of statistical literacy and variables that influence the improvement of undergraduate students’ literacy in Indonesia. The statistical literacy model used is the model proposed by Gal, which are the knowledge component consisting of five cognitive elements: literacy skills, statistical knowledge, mathematical knowledge, context knowledge, and critical questions and disposition components consisting of two elements: attitude critical; beliefs and attitudes. A survey was given to 114 of students, which are from both mathematics study program and mathematics education study program who either have studied basic statistics or have not. The results showed that the level of students’ statistical literacy for all components was sufficient, both for the component of good knowledge and the low disposition component. The average statistical literacy score of students who have studied basic statistics is higher than those who have not studied basic statistics. There are four factors that influence students’ statistical literacy, namely mathematical ability (logical and critical thinking), general knowledge, literacy skills (language), and statistical knowledge.

Knowledge and self-confidence of antibiotic resistance, appropriate antibiotic therapy, and antibiotic stewardship among pharmacy undergraduate students in three Asian countries

Background and purposeTraining pharmacy students in infectious diseases (ID) is important to enable them to participate in antibiotic stewardship programs. This study evaluated knowledge and self-confidence regarding antibiotic resistance, appropriate antibiotic therapy, and antibiotic stewardship among final year pharmacy undergraduate students. MethodsA cross-sectional electronic survey was conducted at universities in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan. A 59-item survey was administered between October 2017 and December 2017. FindingsThe survey was completed by 211 students (response rate 77.8%). The mean knowledge score for antibiotic resistance, appropriate antibiotic therapy, and antibiotic stewardship was 5.6 ± 1.5, 4.7 ± 1.8 (maximum scores 10.0) and 3.1 ± 1.4 (maximum score 5.0), respectively. Significant variations were noted among the schools. There was poor awareness about the consequences of antibiotic resistance and cases with no need for an antibiotic. The knowledge of antibiotic resistance was higher among male respondents (6.1 vs. 5.4) and those who had attended antibiotic resistance (5.7 vs. 5.2) and antibiotic therapy (5.8 vs. 4.9) courses (p < 0.05). Students with ID clerkship experience (5.2 vs. 4.5) had significantly higher score for appropriate antibiotic therapy. ConclusionsFinal year pharmacy undergraduate students in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan had moderate knowledge of antibiotic resistance and antibiotic stewardship. However, the knowledge of appropriate antibiotic therapy was poor.

Students’ Digital Media Literacy: Effects on Social Character

The development of digital technology in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 requires today’s younger generations to demonstrate media literacy. It is often the case that cyber-crime happens among teenagers because they are misinformed. This study measures students’ media literacy using individual competence framework which include technical skills, critical understanding, and communicative abilities. Respondents were 100 university undergraduate students in Indonesia selected randomly. The results showed that 60-80% respondents demonstrated medium level technical skills, 80-90% of them have low critical understanding, and 45% of them displayed medium communicative abilities. In addition, media literacy was found to significantly influence students’ social character as much as 49%. The finding of this study implies the need for literacy education is imminent because low media literacy may lead to low social character.

MILLENNIALS’ CAREER DECISION-MAKING DIFFICULTIES (CDMD) IN INDONESIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Though millennial has unique characteristics as digital natives who prefer to interact with images, branded goods, to have idols and who are interested in modern technological utilization, studying their career decision-making difficulties (CDMD) is barely reported in Indonesia. To respond to such gap, the current report was designed to pattern the CDMD of both male (N = 120) and female (N = 140) undergraduate students in Indonesia. The instrument of the research was totally adopted from Gati et al's. (1996) career decision-making difficulties questionnaire. Descriptive anaylsis showed that the male (M = 4.93) have higher difficulties than the females (M = 4.85). With different levels of difficulties, the current study, therefore, corresponds to Mau's (2004), Guan et al's. (2015), and di Fabio, Palazzeschi, Levin, Levin, and Gati's (2015) reports.

The Impact of The Behavior of Smartphone Usage on The Consumption of Fake News by Student

Abstract— The background of this research is the increase of the distribution of fake news in cyberspace to coincide with the 2019 general election (Pemilu) campaign in Indonesia. Undergraduate students in Indonesia, most of whom are beginner voters in the 2019 election, are one of the most important campaign targets calculated by each political party. Fake news produced massively and structurally by political parties to get support from voters can break the unity and the harmony of the nation. Students as young people whose mindsets are critical and have idealism in fighting for their ideas must be able to distinguish between true and fake news for the safety of their own insights. The research method used is a quantitative method to understand the behavior of students in using mobile phones which is the fastest media for disseminating information through the internet. Understanding these behaviors will provide an overview of the impact of the application or information channel most often opened by someone to their ability to distinguish true and fake news. This study aims to get a strategy that needs to be done to improve student behavior in using mobile phones, which will affect the quality of information obtained from the internet via mobile phones. So that young person who are productive and have the right insight are not easily provoked by fake news from the internet

Utilising Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE) based STEM module for enhancing students’ understanding of Physics concepts

The Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE) is an approach that encourages students to be active, creative and innovative in learning Science including Physics. The ISLE based STEM method helps students in solving real-life problems and involving collaborative group activities. Many students assume that learning Physics is difficult but with the ISLE-based STEM approach, the students will learn Physics theories and concepts with ease and fun. This is in line with the Indonesian government program to enhance the students’ literacy and capacity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among high schools and undergraduate students in Indonesia, This study has utilised the ISLE based STEM module and approach for teaching Physics concepts to the high school students at four selected senior high schools in Banda Aceh, the capital city of Aceh province, Indonesia. The results of the study were encouraging and it would leverage and enrich the current state of knowledge related to the learning Physics and Science concepts.

Effective Behavior of EFL Teachers as Perceived by Undergraduate Students in Indonesia

This study attempts to explore the effective behaviors of teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) as perceived by undergraduate students in Indonesia. For this purpose, a questionnaire was administered to 270 Indonesian undergraduate students. The questionnaire addressed seven dimensions of EFL teachers’ behavior, which are the following: encouraging contact between students and teachers; developing reciprocity and cooperation among students; encouraging active learning; giving prompt feedback; emphasizing time on tasks; communicating high expectations; and respecting diversity in talents and ways of learning. Overall, the students perceived that the EFL teachers’ behavior that most significantly promotes effective learning is the provision of a learning situation in which students will be optimally engaged in learning. These findings call for the implementation of the seven fundamental principles with their accompanying items for effective teaching and learning in undergraduate education in Indonesia.

Apology Strategies Used by EFL Undergraduate Students in Indonesia

Interlanguage speakers, regardless of proficiency level, often experience problems in communication due to their limited knowledge of how speech acts are commonly performed in the target language. The current study attempted to investigate the effects of English proficiency level on the apology strategy use by Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners from two English proficiency levels. The study employed a DCT (Discourse Completion Task) questionnaire and involved 21 A2 students and 21 B1 students majoring in English in their first-year period from an Indonesian university. Utilizing the apology strategy framework from Olshtain &amp; Cohen (1983) and Blum-Kulka, House &amp; Kasper (1989), the findings demonstrated no significant difference between the two subject groups in the overall use of apology strategies, whereas differences were noted at an individual strategy level. Nonetheless, the B1 group made more frequent use and a wider range of apology strategies than the A2 group. In addition, the study found two forms of pragmatic transfer made by the subjects and a new apology strategy.

Approaches to learning of Indonesian accounting students

Numerous calls for improved learning outcomes in accounting graduates have been made by the accounting education bodies and the accounting profession. It has been claimed that the quality of student learning can be enhanced by encouraging a deep approach to learning. Research examining accounting students' learning approaches have been growing vastly (e.g., Booth et al., 1999; Davidson, 2002; Duff, 2004; Eley, 1992; English et al., 2004; Hall et al., 2004; Jackling, 2005a?b). However, most of these studies have been focused on learning approaches of accounting students within the Western societies. Only a few studies have explored this issue in the context of Asian accounting students, and most of them have been conducted using Chinese students (Gow et al., 1994; Cooper, 2004). This study aims to add to the body of literature in this area by exploring approaches to the learning of accounting undergraduate students in Indonesia from gender and cultural perspectives. The findings presented in this paper suggest that motivation, culture and learning environment appear to explain more in terms of differences in approaches to learning adopted by the students than gender.
