Bioplastic’s Valorisation by Anaerobic Co-Digestion with WWTP Mixed Sludge

Bioplastics are designed to degrade at the end of their lifecycle, but effective management of their end-of-life phase and integration into existing organic waste management systems remain significant challenges. Some bioplastics decompose under anaerobic conditions, with the anaerobic digestion (AD) process being a potential solution for their disposal. AD is a promising technology for valorising organic wastes, enabling biomethane production, reducing carbon footprints, and promoting product circularity. This study focuses on evaluating the continuous co-digestion of bioplastics with mixed sludge from an urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) was the selected bioplastic, as various studies have reported its high and rapid degradation under anaerobic mesophilic conditions. PHB’s biodegradability under typical WWTP anaerobic digestion conditions (35 °C, 20-day retention time) was assessed in batch tests and the results indicate that PHB degradation ranged from 68 to 75%, depending on particle size. To further explore the potential of AD for PHB valorisation, the feasibility of anaerobic co-digestion of PHB with WWTP sludge was tested on a continuous laboratory scale using two digesters: a conventional digester (CSTR) and an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). The results indicated complete degradation of PHB, which led to higher biomethanisation percentages in both digesters, rising from 58% to 70% in the AnMBR and from 44% to 72% in the CSTR. The notable increase observed in the CSTR was attributed to changes in microbial populations that improved sludge biodegradability.

The variation of resistome, mobilome and pathogen in domestic and industrial wastewater treatment systems

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), including both domestic and industrial facilities, are key contributors to antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and human pathogens in the environment. However, the characteristics and dissemination mechanisms of ARGs in domestic (SD) and industrial (SI) wastewater treatment systems remain unclear, leading to uncertainties in risk assessment. Based on metagenomic analysis, we observed significant differences in the compositions of resistome (ARGs and metal resistance genes, MRGs), mobilome (mobile genetic elements, MGEs), and bacterial community between SD and SI. SI exhibited lower diversity of ARGs but higher abundance of MRGs compared to SD. The removal efficiency of resistome was lower in the SI than that in the SD. MGEs emerged as the primary driver of ARG dissemination in the WWTPs, followed by the bacterial community. Environmental conditions (physicochemical parameters, heavy metals, and antibiotics) indirectly influenced the variation of resistome. Significantly, environmental conditions and MGEs highly influenced the composition of resistome in the SI, while bacterial community more associated with resistome in the SD. Additionally, we identified 36 human bacterial pathogens as potential hosts of ARGs, MRGs, and MGEs in wastewater samples. This study provides new insights on the dissemination mechanisms and risk assessment of antimicrobial resistance in the different types of WWTPs.

Analyzing the variation of greenhouse gas emissions from typical municipal wastewater treatment plants in Beijing during 2007–2021

With the proposal of dual carbon goals and stringent effluent standards, the path of mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has gained significant research attention. Here, we evaluate the impact of season, elevated standards, operating parameters, and using clean energy on GHG emissions from 8 typical WWTPs in Beijing based on 180 monthly monitoring data. Coupled with the increasing demand for wastewater treatment and 77% more chemical oxygen demand being removed in 2017, total GHG emissions from 5 WWTPs increased by 89% compared to the status quo in 2007, and after energy structure reform total GHG emissions decreased by 17% in 2021. Scenario analysis reveals that energy recovery and clean energy utilization provide 64% and 48% mitigation potential by 2050, respectively. We argue stricter effluent standard leads to GHG emissions growth in WWTPs; meanwhile, process optimization, proper temperature and targeted policies at WWTPs can reduce GHG emissions.

Investigation of organic content and microbial characteristics distribution at the pretreatment units for wastewater treatment plant sustainable upgrading

It is necessary and significant to acquire the influent characteristics in the whole pretreatment units of the activated sludge process in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for the sustainable upgrading. In this work, we drawn the samples and continuously investigated all the structure units of the pretreatment section in a typical wastewater treatment plant including the anaerobic and aerobiotic treatment processes. We monitored the routine environmental parameters in the water, including dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and suspended solids (SS). At the same time, we investigated the concentration distribution patterns of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and found that the degradation of organic matter in the sewage continued in the pretreatment section. And the remarkable decreasing tendency of organic pollution concentration was confirmed along the flow direction in the pretreatment section, suggesting a modest depletion effect on influent organic matter of the pretreatment process. Moreover, to further validate the degradation process of organic compounds in the preprocessing procedure, analysis and detection were conducted on the types of organic compounds and the microbial community structures in the water samples collected at various sampling points through three-dimensional fluorescent spectroscopy and high-throughput sequencing, respectively. Conclusively, the detailed and accurate influent characteristics can support the scientific basis for the WWTP sustainable operation, management, and upgrading, especially for that with the low C/N ratio influent.

A new chemometrically optimised HPLC method for the simultaneous determination of imatinib mesylate and capecitabine, the active medicinal components

ABSTRACT Anticancer drugs such as imatinib mesylate (IMP) and capecitabine (CAP) and their metabolites enter the water cycle through wastewater treatment plant effluents or directly into the water cycle due to their limited biodegradability in typical wastewater treatment plants. However, their long-term effects on water resources are unknown due to their toxicity. The hazards concerned with chronic exposure to these substances raise concerns about their impact on organisms, environmental safety and biodiversity conservation. Therefore, in this study, a chemometrically optimised HPLC method was developed for the simultaneous determination of trace amounts of cytotoxic agents IMP and CAP used in cancer treatment in environmental water, synthetic urine samples and drug samples. Using the Box-Behnken design, optimum conditions discovered using the traditional method were optimised. The effect of each element was evaluated in the design by four factors based on HPLC determination. For the examined levels, mobile phase 1, mobile phase 2 ratio, flow rate, and column temperature parameters for the HPLC method were determined. Using regression analysis on the experimental results, the factors influencing resolution were identified. To achieve the reliability of the results, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test was used. The ANOVA test was employed to verify the consistency of the data. With the information gathered, a model was developed. HPLC was used to examine the target chemicals. A good linearity (R2 > 0.99) was established for the IMP and CAP in the concentration ranges of 1.18–23.59 µg mL−1 and 0.76–15.09 µg mL−1, respectively, under optimum circumstances. The recoveries for spiked samples at three concentration levels ranged from 98.31 to 101.11. The created method has been applied to synthetic urine samples, regional environmental water samples, and pharmaceutical samples with success.

Molecular-level insights into dissolved organic matter and its variations of the full-scale processes in a typical petrochemical wastewater treatment plant

Petrochemical wastewater (PCWW) treatment poses challenges due to its unique and complex dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition, originating from various industrial processes. Despite the addition of advanced treatment units in PCWW treatment plants to meet discharge standards, the mechanisms of molecular-level sights into DOM reactivity of the upgraded full-scale processes including multiple biological treatments and advanced treatment remain unclear. Herein, we employ water quality indexes, spectra, molecular weight (MW) distribution, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry to systematically characterize DOM in a typical PCWW treatment plant including influent, micro-oxygen hydrolysis acidification (MOHA), anaerobic/oxic (AO), and micro-flocculation sand filtration–catalytic ozonation (MFSF–CO). Influent DOM is dominated by tryptophan-like and soluble microbial products with MW fractions 〈 1 kDa and 〉 100 kDa, and CHO with lignin and aliphatic/protein structures. MOHA effectively degrades macromolecular CHO (10.86 %) and CHON (5.24 %) compounds via deamination and nitrogen reduction, while AO removes CHOS compounds with MW < 10 kDa by desulfurization, revealing distinct DOM conversion mechanisms. MFSF–CO transforms unsaturated components to less aromatic and more saturated DOM through oxygen addition reactions and shows high CHOS and CHONS reactivity via desulfurization and deamination reactions, respectively. Moreover, the correlation among multiple parameters suggests UV254 combined with AImod as a simple monitoring indicator of DOM to access the chemical composition. The study provides molecular-level insights into DOM for the contribution to the improvement and optimization of the upgraded processes in PCWW.

Microplastics and Endocrine Disruptors in Typical Wastewater Treatment Plants in Megacity Shanghai.

The fast development of China's urbanization has led to a notable release of emerging pollutants, including microplastics (MPs) and endocrine disruptors (EDCs). Generally, these pollutants enter the coastal environment through the discharge of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and finally threaten the organisms in the receiving waterbody. The study investigated the environmental behavior of MPs and EDCs in two typical WWTPs in one of the megacities in China, Shanghai. The abundance of MPs in the influent ranged from 321 to 976 items/L. Four shapes (films, fragments, fibers, and microbead) were found, while fibers and films dominated. Transparent (31-63%) and white (20-47%) MPs were more frequently observed, while polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose, and cellophane were the main polymetric materials. The size of the MPs fell between 15.8 μm and 2220 μm, and the smaller one (<500 μm) dominated. The removal efficiencies of the two WWTPs for MPs ranged from 64% to 92%, and both WWTPs performed better for large pieces of MPs (>500 μm). For EDCs, total concentrations in the influent were detected, ranging from 113 to 2780 ng/L. Two groups, including phenolic estrogens (PEs) and steroid estrogens (SEs), were detected, and PEs, especially bisphenol A (BPA), were the predominant individuals among the studied EDCs. Specifically, PEs ranged from 82.8 to 2637 ng/L, while SEs ranged from 27.3 to 143 ng/L. The removal efficiencies of the WWTPs for EDCs varied (82.8-100%) as well, possibly due to the different treatment compartments and contamination load in the influent. Seasonal variations for both MPs and EDCs were observed. Specifically, concentrations of MPs and EDCs in WWTPs influent were higher in the wet season, as well as the removal efficiency. Furthermore, there was a correlation observed between the concentrations of MPs and EDCs, suggesting that MPs and EDCs may originate from the same source and that EDCs released by MPs cannot be ignored during treatment. Finally, the study evaluated the environmental risk of the effluents. MPs led to a minor risk (Level I), while EDCs might lead to an adverse impact on algae (RQs = 0.0014-0.024) and fish (RQs = 3.4-30.2). In summary, WWTPs received considerable amounts of MPs and EDCs. Although the WWTPs removed the contaminants efficiently, the environmental risk of the effluent needs to be noted.

Occurrence, removal, and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives in typical wastewater treatment plants

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have a certain removal capacity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives, but some of them are discharged with effluent into the environment, which can affect the environment. Therefore, to understand the presence, sources, and potential risks of PAHs and their derivatives in WWTPs. Sixteen PAHs, three chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs), three oxidized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs), and three methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MPAHs) were detected in the influent and effluent water of three WWTPs in China. The average concentrations of their influent ∑PAHs, ∑ClPAHs, ∑OPAHs, and ∑MPAHs ranged from 2682.50 to 2774.53 ng/L, 553.26–906.28 ng/L, 415.40–731.56 ng/L, and 534.04–969.83 ng/L, respectively, and the effluent concentrations ranged from 823.28 to 993.37 ng/L, 269.43–489.94 ng/L, 285.93–463.55 ng/L, and 376.25–512.34 ng/L, respectively. The growth of heat transport and industrial energy consumption in the region has a significant impact on the level of PAHs in WWTPs. According to the calculated removal efficiencies of PAHs and their derivatives in the three WWTPs (A, B, and C), the removal rates of PAHs and their derivatives were 69–72%, 62–71%, and 68–73%, respectively, and for the substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (SPAHs), the removal rates were 41–49%, 31–40%, and 33–39%, respectively; moreover, the removal rates of PAHs were greater than those of SPAHs in the WWTPs. The results obtained via the ratio method indicated that the main sources of PAHs in the influent of WWTPs were the combustion of coal and biomass, and petroleum contamination was the secondary source. In risk evaluation, there were 5 compounds for which the risk quotient was considered high ecological risk. During chronic disease evaluation, there were 11 compounds with a risk quotient considered to indicate high risk. PAHs and SPAHs with high relative molecular masses in the effluent of WWTPs pose more serious environmental hazards than their PAHs counterparts.

N-nitrosamines in electroplating and printing/dyeing industrial wastewater treatment plants: Removal efficiency, environmental emission, and the influence on drinking water

The discharge of industrial wastewater containing high concentrations of N-nitrosamines to the aquatic environment can impair downstream source waters and pose potential risks to human health. However, the transport and fate of N-nitrosamines in typical industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWWTPs) and the influence of these effluents on source water and drinking water are still unclear. This study investigated nine N-nitrosamines in four full-scale electroplating (E-) and printing/dyeing (PD-) IWWTPs, two drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in the lower reaches of these IWWTPs, and the corresponding tap water in South China. The total concentrations of N-nitrosamines (∑NAs) were 382–10,600, 480–1920, 494–789, and 27.9–427 ng/L in influents, effluents, source water, and tap water, respectively. The compositions of N-nitrosamine species in different influents varied a lot, while N-nitrosodi-n-butylamine (NDBA) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) dominated in most of the effluents, source water, and tap water. More than 70 % N-nitrosamines were removed by wastewater treatment processes used in E-IWWTPs such as ferric-carbon micro-electrolysis (Fe/C-ME), while only about 50 % of N-nitrosamines were removed in PD-IWWTPs due to the use of chlorine reagent or other inefficient conventional processes such as flocculation by cationic amine-based polymers or bio-contact oxidation. Therefore, the mass fluxes of N-nitrosamines discharged from these industrial wastewaters to the environment in the selected two industrial towns were up to 14,700 mg/day. The results based on correlation and principal component analysis significantly demonstrated correlations between E-and PD-effluents and source water and tap water, suggesting that these effluents can serve as sources of N-nitrosamines to local drinking water systems. This study suggests that N-nitrosamines are prevalent in typical IWWTPs, which may infect drinking water systems. The findings of this study provide a basis data for the scientific evaluation of environmental processes of N-nitrosamines.

Achieving carbon neutrality in Shanghai's municipal wastewater treatment sector requires coordinated water conservation and technical improvement

Municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) situated within urban landscapes play a critical role in fostering sustainable urban development while concurrently serving as substantial contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Under the dual pressure of future urban socioeconomic development and the carbon neutrality target, it is important to identify GHG emission reduction pathways for municipal WWTPs. Existing research on GHG emission reduction in WWTPs exhibit a notable absence of a comprehensive city-centric perspective, with insufficient consideration given to the impact of water conservation measures. We constructed a GHG emission accounting system for the municipal WWTPs employing Shanghai as a case study. Based on field surveys of typical WWTPs, we proposed GHG emission reduction pathways and future demand-technology scenarios. Our results showed that, with the robust mitigation measures, Shanghai's municipal WWTPs have the potential to curtail GHG emissions to 0.55 Mt by 2050. Notably, GHG emission reduction can be achieved through water conservation and technical improvement. Medication optimization and energy saving are significant mitigation measures for GHG emission reduction, and should be optimally considered in the future. This investigation not only establishes a forward-looking GHG emission reduction roadmap for the municipal WWTPs at the city-scale but also imparts valuable insights to urban management practices in analogous urban settings.

Investigation of Key Technologies for Energy Saving and Consumption Reduction in Chongqing Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants Based on Carbon Emission Reduction Contribution

&lt;p&gt;In this paper, based on the factors of treatment process, treatment scale, as well as water quality, the level and distribution of electricity consumption, drug consumption, and indirect carbon emission of five typical wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were examined. The distribution of electricity consumption within the WWTPs were analyzed in terms of wastewater treatment units. The results uncovered that the biological treatment unit was the treatment unit with a high percentage of electricity consumption in the WWTPs. Carbon emissions of main units in the WWTPs presented that the aeration blower, sewage lifting pump, submersible pusher, phosphorus remover and return sludge pump of the biological treatment unit were the top 5 emission units of carbon emissions in the WWTPs, and the key influencing factors of the carbon emissions of the main carbon emission units had been analyzed. Combined with the current situation of sewage treatment energy consumption in Chongqing, the analysis put forward a library of energy saving and consumption reduction measures for Chongqing WWTPs, which applied them to the sewage treatment plant A energy saving and consumption reduction renovation project.&lt;/p&gt;&#x0D;

Fate and Proliferation of Vancomycin Resistance Genes in Two Typical Pharmaceutical Wastewater Treatment Plants

The emergence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) and vancomycin resistance genes (VRGs) complicates the application of vancomycin, which is a last-line agent for human infectious diseases, and pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plants (PWWTPs) are widely thought to be important sources of corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, two VRGs (vanA and vanB) were evaluated in two PWWTPs using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis to characterize the occurrence and fate of VRGs. The VRG concentration tended to decrease throughout all processing stages, while anaerobic treatment promoted the propagation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and led to an increase in VRG abundance. Finally, the absolute concentrations of vanA and vanB exceeded 104 copies/mL in the effluents, and a significant amount of VRGs was transferred to sludge at 1.68 × 1017 copies/d. Redundancy analysis demonstrated that the relative abundance of ARGs was significantly correlated with the concentrations of vancomycin and COD. Furthermore, the relative abundance of vanA was increased in wastewater with multiple antibiotics, while the relative abundance of vanB only increased in the presence of vancomycin. This observation implied different intrinsic resistance mechanisms for different VRG subtypes. Overall, in this report, we describe the first comprehensive study on the fate and behavior of VRGs with different physicochemical or biochemical treatments and different antibiotic selection pressures in PWWTPs; this report provides important references for the environmental spread of VRGs.

Molecular insights into microbial transformation of bioaerosol-derived dissolved organic matter discharged from wastewater treatment plant

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are important sources of aerosol-derived dissolved organic matter (ADOM) which may threaten human health via the respiratory system. In this study, aerosols were sampled from a typical WWTP to explore the chemical molecular diversity, molecular ecological network, and potential toxicities of the ADOM in the aerosols. The high fluorescence index (>1.9) and biological index (0.66–1.17) indicated the strong autogenous microbial source characteristics of the ADOM in the WWTP. DOM and microbes in the wastewater were aerosolized due to strong agitation and bubbling in the treatment processes, and contributed to 74 % and 75 %, respectively, of the ADOM and microbes in the aerosols. The ADOM was mainly composed of CHO and CHOS accounting for 35 % and 29 % of the total number of molecules, respectively, with lignin-like (69 %) as the major constituent. 49 % of the ADOM transformations were thermodynamically limited, and intragroup transformations were easier than intergroup transformations. Bacteria in the aerosols involved in ADOM transformations exhibited both cooperative and divergent behaviors and tended to transform carbohydrate-like and amino sugar/protein-like into recalcitrant lignin-like. The microbial compositions were affected by atmosphere temperature and humidity indirectly by modulating the properties of ADOM. Tannin-like, lignin-like, and unsaturated hydrocarbon-like molecules in the ADOM were primary toxicity contributors, facilitating the expression of inflammatory factors IL-β (2.2–5.4 folds), TNF-α (3.5–7.0 folds), and IL-6 (3.5–11.2 folds), respectively.

Microplastics shape microbial interactions and affect the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes in different full-scale wastewater treatment plants

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) pose a potential threat to the environment because of the accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microplastics (MPs). However, the interactions between ARGs and MPs, which have both indirect and direct effects on ARG dissemination in WWTPs, remain unclear. In this study, spatiotemporal variations in different types of MPs, ten ARGs (sul1, sul2, tetA, tetO, tetM, tetX, tetW, qnrS, ermB, and ermC), class 1 integron integrase (intI1) and transposon Tn916/1545 in three typical WWTPs were characterized. Sul1, tetO, and sul2 were the predominant ARGs in the targeted WWTPs, whereas the intI1 and transposon Tn916/1545 were positively correlated with most of the targeted ARGs. Saccharimonadales (4.15 %), Trichococcus (2.60 %), Nitrospira (1.96 %), Candidatus amarolinea (1.79 %), and SC-I-84 (belonging to phylum Proteobacteria) (1.78 %) were the dominant genera. Network and redundancy analyses showed that Trichococcus, Faecalibacterium, Arcobacter, and Prevotella copri were potential hosts of ARGs, whereas Candidatus campbellbacteria and Candidatus kaiserbacteria were negatively correlated with ARGs. The potential hosts of ARGs had a strong positive correlation with polyethylene terephthalate, silicone resin, and fluor rubber and a negative correlation with polyurethane. Candidatus campbellbacteria and Candidatus kaiserbacteria were positively correlated with polyurethane, whereas potential hosts of ARGs were positively correlated with polypropylene and fluor rubber. Structural equation modeling highlighted that intI1, transposon Tn916/1545 and microbial communities, particularly microbial diversity, dominated the dissemination of ARGs, whereas MPs had a significant positive correlation with microbial abundance. Our study deepens the understanding of the relationships between ARGs and MPs in WWTPs, which will be helpful in designing strategies for inhibiting ARG hosts in WWTPs.

Prediction of biological nutrients removal in full-scale wastewater treatment plants using H2O automated machine learning and back propagation artificial neural network model: Optimization and comparison

The effective control of total nitrogen (ETN) and total phosphorus (ETP) in effluent is challenging for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this work, automated machine learning (AutoML) (mean square error = 0.4200 ∼ 3.8245, R2 = 0.5699 ∼ 0.6219) and back propagation artificial neural network (BPANN) model (mean square error = 0.0012 ∼ 6.9067, R2 = 0.4326 ∼ 0.8908) were used to predict and analyze biological nutrients removal in full-scale WWTPs. Interestingly, BPANN model presented high prediction performance and general applicability for WWTPs with different biological treatment units. However, the AutoML candidate models were more interpretable, and the results showed that electricity carbon emission dominated the prediction. Meanwhile, increasing data volume and types of WWTP hardly affected the interpretable results, demonstrating its wide applicability. This study demonstrated the validity and the specific advantages of predicting ETN and ETP using H2O AutoML and BPANN model, which provided guidance on the prediction and improvement of biological nutrients removal in WWTPs.

Occurrence and Fate of Substituted p-Phenylenediamine-Derived Quinones in Hong Kong Wastewater Treatment Plants.

para-Phenylenediamine quinones (PPD-Qs) are a newly discovered class of transformation products derived from para-phenylenediamine (PPD) antioxidants. These compounds are prevalent in runoff, roadside soil, and particulate matter. One compound among these, N-1,3-dimethylbutyl-n'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q), was found to induce acute mortality of coho salmon, rainbow trout, and brook trout, with the median lethal concentrations even lower than its appearance in the surface and receiving water system. However, there was limited knowledge about the occurrence and fate of these emerging environmental contaminants in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which is crucial for effective pollutant removal via municipal wastewater networks. In the current study, we performed a comprehensive investigation of a suite of PPD-Qs along with their parent compounds across the influent, effluent, and biosolids during each processing unit in four typical WWTPs in Hong Kong. The total concentrations of PPDs and PPD-Qs in the influent were determined to be 2.7-90 and 14-830 ng/L. In the effluent, their concentrations decreased to 0.59-40 and 2.8-140 ng/L, respectively. The median removal efficiency for PPD-Qs varied between 53.0 and 91.0% across the WWTPs, indicating that a considerable proportion of these contaminants may not be fully eliminated through the current processing technology. Mass flow analyses revealed that relatively higher levels of PPD-Qs were retained in the sewage sludge (20.0%) rather than in the wastewater (16.9%). In comparison to PPDs, PPD-Qs with higher half-lives exhibited higher release levels via effluent wastewater, which raises particular concerns about their environmental consequences to aquatic ecosystems.

Changes of composition and antibiotic resistance of fecal coliform bacteria in municipal wastewater treatment plant

The dynamics of the composition and antibiotic resistance of the fecal coliform bacteria (FCB) in a typical wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) were investigated concerning the seasonal changes. Results showed that WWTP could remove the FCB concentration by 3∼5 logs within the effluent of 104∼105 CFU/L, but the antibiotic resistant rate of FCB species increased significantly after WWTP. The dominant FCB changed from Escherichia coli in the influent (∼73.0%) to Klebsiella pneumoniae in the effluent (∼53.3%) after WWTP, where the Escherichia coli was removed the most, while Klebsiella pneumoniae was the most persistent. The secondary tank removed the most of FCB (by 3∼4 logs) compared to other processes, but increased all the concerned antibiotic resistant rate. The potential super bugs of FCB community showing resistance to all the target antibiotics were selected in the biological treatment unit of WWTP. The FCB showed the highest multiple antibiotic resistance (92.9%) in total which even increased to 100% in the effluent. Klebsiella has the highest antibiotic resistant rate in FCB, with a multiple antibiotic resistance rate of 98.4%. These indicated that the Klebsiella pneumoniae not just Escherichia coli should be specially emphasized after WWTP concerning the health risk associated with FCB community.

A Semisupervised Soft-Sensor of Just-in-Time Learning With Structure Entropy Clustering and Applications for Industrial Processes Monitoring

To monitor industrial processes properly, soft-sensors are widely used to predict significant but difficult-to-measure quality variables. However, the prediction performances of traditional data-driven soft-sensors are usually unacceptable once suffering from high-nonlinear, high-dimension and imblance data issues. Therefore, a semi-supervised soft-sensor, which is learned by a just-in-time method with structure entropy clustering (SS-JITL-SEC), is proposed aiming to improve prediction performance with a simpler way. Inspired by a divide and conquer strategy, a novel SEC method is proposed to achieve several clusters and then to translate the highly complex and nonlinear modeling problems into simple and linear ones. Moreover, the training dataset is extended through a mixed semi-supervised (SS) labeling approach. Finally, dissimilarity-based just-in-time learning (JITL) works together with the resulting clustering sub-datasets to formulate a local adaptive prediction model. Two datasets from different types of wastewater treatment plants are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed soft-sensor. The results show that the SS-JITL-SEC soft-sensor can achieve better prediction performance than other standard counterparts, and even for effective process monitoring with the resulted residuals.

The destiny of microplastics in one typical petrochemical wastewater treatment plant

Microplastic (MP) is a type of emerging contaminant that is verified to be threatening to some organisms. Controlling MP emission from the source is preferred for its refractory characteristic. The petrochemical industry is a possible contributor, responsible for the most plastic production, and wastewater is the most possible sink of MP. This study applied the Agilent 8700 Laser infrared imaging spectrometer (LDIR) to detect MPs in one typical petrochemical wastewater treatment plant (PWWTP). It was determined that the abundances of MPs in the influent and effluent of the target PWWTP were as high as 7706 and 608 particles/L. The primary treatment removed most MPs (87.5 %) with a final removal efficiency of 92.1 %. 23 types of MPs were identified, and Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Silicone resin prevailed in the effluent. All the MPs were smaller than 483.9 μm. All in all, this study preliminarily unveiled the ignorable status of the petrochemical industry in releasing MPs into the water environment for the first time.
