Dignity in Human Development Motivation

Trust is the foundation of life and is proven through practice. Trust in oneself and in each other is a valuable intangible asset of humanity, clearly demonstrated through material values such as money. True dignity must come from the comprehensive development of human beings. Otherwise, distorted standards such as dependence, possession and falsehood will appear, leading to human suffering. Economic relations come from basic human needs. Needs are the driving force for action. Therefore, true dignity must serve human existence and development. In addition, trust can be measured tangibly through material values, needs come from human nature and interests are the driving force for action. True dignity is closely linked to the needs of the community. Trust is demonstrated through practice, needs are necessary, the basis of interests, the driving force for development. Particularly painful is the belief in norms that are not based on human nature and no longer require dignity.

‘True dignity’ and ‘respect-worthiness’

Abstract In the Groundwork, Kant seems to make two paradoxical claims about the source of human dignity. First, he claims that if “rational nature exists as an end in itself” (Kant, 1998, p. 36), it is because “humanity is… dignity, insofar it is capable of morality” (Kant, 1998, p. 42). Second, he claims that although “autonomy is the ground of the dignity of human nature and of every rational nature” (Kant, 1998, p. 43), the human being can only have “dignity… insofar he fulfils all his duties” (Kant, 1998, p. 46). This paper argues that neither claim is repugnant because Kant seeks to advance two kinds of dignity. Kant intends to elucidate that the human being possesses a basic ‘entitled dignity’ in virtue of his capacity for morality, but that he needs to become a moral being in order for him to realise his ‘true dignity’. This paper claims that the formal condition under which a person can be worthy of respect is identical with the condition of realising his ‘true dignity’.

Socratic Meditation and Emotional Self-Regulation

This essay proposes that Socrates practiced various spiritual exercises, induding meditation, and that this Socratic practice of meditation was habitual, aimed at cultivating emotional self-control and existential preparedness. Corntemporary research in neurobiology supports the view that intentional mental actions, including mediation, have a profound impact on brain activity, neuroplasticity, and help engender emotional self-control. This impact on brain activity is confirmed via technological developments, a prime example of how technology benefits humanity, Socrates attains the balanced emotional self-control that Alcibiades describes in the Symposium because of the sustained mental effort he exerts that direct impetus his brain and his emotional and philosophical life. The essay concludes that Socratic meditative practices aimed at manifesting true dignity as human beings within the complexities of a technological world offer a promising model of self-care worthy of embracing today.

Thompson, for example, argued that Morris was "a pioneer of constructive thought as to the organization of socialist life within Communist society." 1 His vision of socialism, famously captured in his utopian novel News From Nowhere, was inspired by a number of principles, but perhaps its most notable feature was the demand that labor be made attractive. 2 As John Drinkwater noted shortly after Morris's death, Morris passionately believed that an individual who is "overworked, or employed all the while in degrading work ... cannot be himself." The message of his socialism, in Drinkwater's view "one of the profoundest and most inspiriting that it has been given to any man to deliver," was that "in bringing back joy to their daily work [men] ... would put their feet on the first step towards ... true dignity and pride of life." 3

The Problem of Greek Nationality

THE problem which I propose to discuss in this paper is one which must strike anyone who ponders at all about the history of Greece. Can we speak of a Greek nation? as we all know, was never united until the Roman conquest within a single state; consequently there can be no history of Greece in the sense that there is a history of Rome. But the concept of a Greek nation trying to realize itself (and failing) has been adopted by many historians as the most fruitful criterion for interpreting the kaleidoscopic relations of the Greek cities. A few quotations will make this clear. The story of the Greeks possesses coordination and the true dignity of history only where it strives continuously, and with ever broader results, towards effective political unity, namely in Greece proper. These words of De Sanctis' can be paralleled from Volume 6 of the Cambridge Ancient History,2 where Cary writes, [The Athenian Empire] represented the first resolute attempt to solve the key problem of Greek politics, the assembling of the scattered Greek communities into a United States of Greece, or from a recent work by Pohlenz,8 The League of Corinth brought to fruition that unity of the Hellenes for which the best elements in the people had for so long yearned.
