Evaluation of Oral Health Status Among Road Transport Drivers in Erode District of Tamil Nadu

ABSTRACT Introduction The aim of this study was to analyse the oral health status behaviours and treatment needs of drivers employed in Jeeva Transport Corporation located in Erode district of Tamil Nadu. Materials and methods A total of 360 workers aged 35 to 60 years were recruited in the study to evaluate their oral health status using a detailed closed-ended questionnaire. Results Among 360 study subjects, there was 4-5 mm loss of attachment seen in 261 (44.7%) and 6-8 mm loss of attachment was seen in 17 drivers (4.7%).265 of them (76.1%) had smoking habits. Of these 117(33.6%) used smoking tobacco and 126(36.2%) used smokeless tobacco. Conclusion The sample of transport workers provides a good opportunity to survey a population of diverse geographic and socio-economic backgrounds. It is critical to implement oral health policies that prevent, intervene and rehabilitate tobacco consumption habits and promote oral health among them.

Station Area Design Approach for Enhancing Multimodal Urban Transport System, New Delhi

Delhi metro was conceived foreseeing the rising concern of traffic in and around the Delhi region and after implementation it helped in reducing considerable amount of personalized vehicles off the roads of Delhi. Delhi metro runs with the support of other modes like Feeder bus, DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) bus, IPT (Intermediate Public Transport) etc. and form the framework of multimodal urban public transport system of Delhi. It forms the life line of Delhi's urban transportation scenario. This research aims to study various aspects of station area design in order to enhance the passenger's comfort and convenience. The station amenities like physical infrastructure including parking area, transfer area, metro ridership data, pedestrian network, bicycle facilities, feeder shelter, taxi stands (IPT Stands) etc. play a key role in convenient transfers in a multimodal transport system. The Delhi metro stations of Red line and Yellow line were identified for the case study. A commuter travel time questionnaire and detailed station area inventory was conducted to assess the existing situation. Several design area parameters were analysed for improvement of station area premises. Based on the analysis this study identifies good practices and recommendations are given to improve the existing system performance.

Performance Evaluation of Premium Services in Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC)

In this paper we are measuring the performance of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) specifically aiming at premium bus services of BMTC operating in Bangalore city. The performance measurement of premium bus services is done using two different approaches. Ratios were computed considering different operational and financial indicators and these ratios are benchmarked by considering the best performing units as the target to compare the bus depots performance. Further we studied the performance of bus depots using data envelopment analysis (DEA). Our analysis indicated that most of the depots are efficient where as depot 13 have significant opportunities for improvements.

Economics of State-owned Passenger Transport in Kolkata

In developing countries, rapid urbanisation has led to an increase in the demand for transport, aggravating problems of pollution, congestion and accidents. Increasing public transport availability is one way of addressing these problems. In the Indian city of Kolkata, buses cater to a large number of people in the metropolitan area and are run by private operators as well as by the state government. Corporations owned by the state, known as state transport undertakings, operate buses. There is, however, a general complaint that the state-run buses show poor performance in nearly every sphere, including inefficient staff, irregular service, ill-maintained fleet, etc. The objective of this study is to look at the physical, financial and manpower performance of the different state transport corporations to find out whether these corporations operate efficiently. The results indicate that there is underutilisation of fleet, defective employment policy, wrong purchase policy, poor revenue generation, etc. on the part of all the corporations.

Analytic Hierarchy Process to Select Environmentally Conscious Suppliers for Sustainable Supply Chain Management : A Case Study in a Public Sector Transport Corporation

The ever increasing levels of hazardous and toxic waste generated from industrial sector hasten to implement the Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) in all sphere of the business practice. In this research article the authors developed a Supplier Selection model applying Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to select Environmentally Conscious Suppliers (ECS) for one of the maintenance unit of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) providing public passenger transport service in a metropolitan city located in South India. Being a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), the organization has the list of approved suppliers who are pre-qualified to supply the materials and spare parts required to maintain their road vehicles in accordance with the Government’s Public Procurement Policy (PPP). However the growing concern being faced by the organization in the disposal of the hazardous and toxic waste accumulated, which forces them to select suitable suppliers who will comply with the SSCM principles from their pre-qualified list of suppliers.

Computing Cloud as the Tool Supporting Human Resources Management in Transnational Transport Corporation

In this article authors focused on problems, which transnational corporations come across in the area of resource management human, in particular in managing the development of employees and pointed, in what way application of cloud computing lets them reduce these problems and make the whole process more transparent. First two sections presented theoretical dissertations about problems of human resources management in transnational corporations and the application of cloud computing as the tool for increasing the flexibility and better employers management. A next part of the text is an analysis made on the basis of observation and documentation of causes and effectiveness of application of the cloud as a toll supportinghuman resources management in the international corporation.

Impact of Agility, Adaptability and Alignment on Humanitarian Logistics Performance: Mediating Effect of Leadership

Even though researchers have immensely contributed in the field of supply chain agility, supply chain adaptability and supply chain alignment, their impact on humanitarian supply chain performance and their relationship is not well known. Leadership is the most discussed and one of the most debated dimensions and little is known about leadership integration with a humanitarian supply chain network design. We carried out a systematic literature review (SLR) to identify variables and their items to design a structured questionnaire, which was pretested with experts in the humanitarian supply chain. We conducted an empirical study on a sample of 306 responses that were collected by us during Allahabad Kumbh from senior officials of the police department, Indian Railways, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation and third-party logistics (3PL) companies. We have used the exploratory factor analysis followed by the confirmatory factor analysis to check the construct validity of scales and goodness of fit. We further tested our hypotheses using regression analysis and mediation effect using Baron and Kenny’s (1986) proposed steps. We further checked the mediation significance using the Sobel test. We found that supply chain alignment is a strong determinant of logistics performance and human performance. The supply chain agility is found to completely mediate between supply chain adaptability and human performance and partially mediate between supply chain adaptability and logistics performance. Leadership has a partial mediation effect between supply chain alignment and human performance.

Turkish Air Passenger Characteristics and Approach to Self Service Applications Provided by Turkish Air Transport Corporations

This article provides a different look at aviation corporate management, which has intense competition in today's market conditions. The purpose of the study is to provide innovative solutions to aviation corporate management, which can benefit and contribute to the development of strategic plans. In the study, we examined self-service applications and products that have been under operation in the last 20 years in the global aviation sector. The use of self-service applications in the global aviation sector was evaluated, with comparisons drawn to the Turkish aviation market. Self-service products and services along with global and local passenger usage were compared regarding factors such as confidence and culture. Usage of such applications were analyzed and evaluated concerning benefits and drawbacks. Data concerning Turkish passenger characteristics, capabilities, preferences and trends were gathered via survey, which helped to establish a baseline including strategic management recommendations for the Turkish aviation corporate management.

Technical Efficiency of Urban Public Transport Undertakings in India: A Study with Special Reference to CSTC

In most of the big cities in India, buses are mainly run by publicly owned State Transport Undertakings (STUs), many of which make losses due to some social obligations to be fulfilled. In this paper, the values of certain performance indicators showed that some undertakings were in a much better position as compared to others. The Calcutta State Transport Corporation (CSTC) in the state of West Bengal, one of the oldest STUs in India, exhibited quite a dismal performance. In such a scenario, a comparison was made between the technical efficiencies of CSTC and a few other STUs of India using stochastic frontier analysis. CSTC was found to have a very low technical efficiency, corroborating the results obtained in terms of the performance indicators.

Optimization of bus allocation to depots by minimizing dead kilometers

SummaryIn metropolitan cities, public transportation service plays a vital role in mobility of people, and it has to introduce new routes more frequently due to the fast development of the city in terms of population growth and city size. Whenever there is introduction of new route or increase in frequency of buses, the non‐revenue kilometers covered by the buses increases as depot and route starting/ending points are at different places. This non‐revenue kilometers or dead kilometers depends on the distance between depot and route starting point/ending point. The dead kilometers not only results in revenue loss but also results in an increase in the operating cost because of the extra kilometers covered by buses. Reduction of dead kilometers is necessary for the economic growth of the public transportation system. Therefore, in this study, the attention is focused on minimizing dead kilometers by optimizing allocation of buses to depots depending upon the shortest distance between depot and route starting/ending points. We consider also depot capacity and time period of operation during allocation of buses to ensure parking safety and proper maintenance of buses. Mathematical model is developed considering the aforementioned parameters, which is a mixed integer program, and applied to Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) routes operating presently in order to obtain optimal bus allocation to depots. Database for dead kilometers of depots in BMTC for all the schedules are generated using the Form‐4 (trip sheet) of each schedule to analyze depot‐wise and division‐wise dead kilometers. This study also suggests alternative locations where depots can be located to reduce dead kilometers. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A Case Study on Perception Model of Human Resource Management Practices of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (With Reference to Bangalore Region)

This study examined the relationship between the employee perception and the human resource management practices in the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, and looked at how employees perceived differently with respect to the HRM variables in terms of demographical factors such as gender, age, educational level and experience. A cross- sectional survey was conducted with a convenience sample of three groups of composite employees, namely, drivers and conductors (i.e. 229), technical staff (i.e.52), and administrative staff (i.e.37). The results indicated that the employee perceptions have a significant influence on their human resource management practices.The study further found that male participants perceived their human resource management practices significantly more positive than their female counterparts. Employees with degrees were significantly more positive about the level of employee participation than the participants with diploma qualifications. Respondents in the exploitation management department were significantly more positive about their human resource management practices. With the result of ANOVA, the variation in the perceptions of the respondents on human resource management factors was significant with the null hypothesis except promotion factor and job designing factor. From the ranking of human resource management factors, corporation should concentrate to mainly on employee motivation and wages and salary increase.

Assessment of quality of life (QoL) in known hypertensive workers of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Mandya district

Background: Quality of life (QoL) is increasingly used to assess the impact of chronic illness and health-care intervention. Hypertension is one such chronic disease, which is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease and found to impair the QoL. Objective: To assess the QoL in known hypertensive workers of KSRTC, Mandya district. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted over a period of 1 year in Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) depots, Mandya district, Karnataka, India. All the 110 hypertensive workers in KSRTC, Mandya division, participated in this study. QoL was assessed by using the Kannada version of WHOQoL-BREF. Result: The mean age of the study subjects was 42.4 ± 10.22 years. Majority of them felt that their overall QoL was neither good nor poor. QoL components can be ordered by their significance as follows: social, psychological, physical, and environmental domains. Occupation showed a significant correlation with psychological domain. Conclusion: Among the various domains of QoL, the highest score was in social domain and the least score in environmental domain of QoL. Occupation, marital status, and the health condition of the workers were the main factors influencing the QoL.

Efficiency Comparison of Bus Operators in Delhi

There is an apparent inefficiency in the workings of the primary bus operators in New Delhi. The paper focuses on labor inefficiency and compares the compensation schemes offered to the conductors of the two major bus operators in Delhi- Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS). Such a study which compares the labour efficiency, and incentive schemes offered by these two primary bus services has not been done before. The results from the interview of bus conductors of DTC and DIMTS are used to establish the presence of moral hazard. The wide literature on the principal-agent problem is then examined, to find a wage scheme for DTC employees, which provides adequate incentives to them to perform efficiently. Hart and Holmstrom’s (1987) non-linear wage model is suggested in this case study to eliminate the problem of moral hazard. It is also found that the wage scheme offered by DIMTS is more efficient than that of DTC.

A bi-level approach to frequency optimisation of public transport systems

In this study, we concentrate on one of the three major areas of the whole transit network design problem that being the frequency setting. The main problem addressed here is the minimisation of losses borne by a public state transport corporation in India. This is achieved by optimally allocating resources to shared routes already in existence. The bus frequency setting problem is solved using a bi-level methodology. In the first level minimum required fleet size for the routes are found out by considering the routes individually. In the second level with the guarantee of load feasibility, allocation of frequencies is done for the fleet size found in the first level. This is done by also taking into consideration the achievement of minimisation of operational cost of the routes under consideration as added objectives. The relation between the operations cost and the maintained frequencies are found out using artificial neural network (ANN), and the second level is solved using a multi objective genetic algorithm (GA). This methodology has been used in optimising two shared routes and the results are thus presented.

“Green work- life balance policy for women doing male- dominated jobs”:- with special reference to andhra pradesh state road transport corporation (apsrtc)

In India, Social, Economic, Demographic, Political factors are challenged the women to work equal to men and take up challenge to do male-dominated jobs like bus drivers & conductors, Railway drivers, Pilots etc. In general, male-dominated jobs are typical and troublesome to married women who are engaged in this. Work-life balance is more crucial for women especially who are doing male-dominated jobs. Green work-life balance policy will assimilate the dual role of an employee & create a congenial environment at work place.Since 1996, APSRTC started recruiting women bus conductors. The women bus conductors have a challenge to discharge their duties at work place as well as to cater the needs of their family. Their dual role as bus conductor & home maker. Sample size of 28 %of total women bus conductors in Krishna region, APSRTC has been chosen to deal with work-life balance for women. Therefore, the major objective of the present study is to examine the influencing factors at work place & family with respect to work-life balance.The study understands the correlation between work to- family conflict & family to-work conflict. To achieve this, random sample of 150 women conductors has been chosen. The current study reveals the role & responsibility at work place, odd working hours, managing family life, amenities at work place, support from management and support from family tomake the balance between work & life. Eventually, the present study recommends the management of APSRTC regarding the adoption of green work-life balance & family friendly policy for the sake of women conductors.

Role of tobacco warning labels in informing smokers about risks of smoking among bus drivers in Mangalore, India.

Smoking tobacco is considered as a leading cause of preventable death, mostly in developing countries like India. One of the primary goals of international tobacco control is to educate smokers about the risks associated with tobacco consumption. Tobacco warning labels (TWLs) on cigarette packages are one of the most common statutory means to communicate health risks of smoking to smokers, with the hope that once educated, they will be more likely to quit the habit. The present survey was conducted to assess the effectiveness of TWLs in communicating health risks of tobacco usage among 263 adult smokers working as bus drivers in Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Mangalore, India. Information was collected on demographic details, exposure and response to health warnings on tobacco products, intention to quit and nicotine dependency. The majority (79.5%) of the respondents revealed negative intentions towards quitting smoking. Nearly half of the participants had a 'low' nicotine dependency (47.5%) and 98.1% of the respondents had often noticed warning labels on tobacco packages. These health warnings made 71.5% of the respondents think about quitting smoking. Respondents who noticed advertisement or pictures about dangers of smoking had better knowledge, with respect to lung cancer and impotence as a consequence of tobacco. A higher exposure to warning labels was significantly associated with lower nicotine dependency levels of smokers among the present study population. A significantly higher number of respondents who noticed advertisement or pictures about the dangers of smoking thought about the risks of smoking and were more inclined to think about quitting smoking. As exposure increased, an increase in the knowledge and response of participants was also observed. Exposure to tobacco warning labels helps to educate smokers about health risks of tobacco smoking. It may be possible to promote oral health among bus drivers by developing strategies to educate them about these risk factors.

Mobile Enabled RFID-GPS Based Bus Tracking System

Public transportation in many countries is being used as a means of transport for travelling and accordingly people would prefer these public transportation to be scheduled properly, on time and the frequency be adequately fixed for commuters to make good use of it. It has been found that quite an amount of research work has been carried out, by way of using RFID technology in the public transportation systems towards the tracking of passengers when they board and exit buses. In addition research has also been carried out in using GPS towards the tracking of buses along with RFID technology at traffic lights, bus stops, intersections etc and also displaying expected arrival times on LCD screen at bus stops along with their current positions. Taking these aspects into consideration, an intelligent mobile bus tracking system for the Jamaican Urban Transport Corporation has been proposed and validated as a case study. The proposed system also enables commuters towards tracking the bus of their choice and also knowing their expected arrival times. So taking the above aspects into consideration, in this research the authors have proposed and validated on how control center of a bus company could track the location of a bus based on information received from RFID reader and GPS Transmitter positioned at various Bus stops and in the Bus and accordingly the expected time of arrival calculated for displaying the information on commuter's handset via Gmap. The implementation of the bus tracking scheme has been carried out using Adobe Flash player and Java.

PROCESS MAPPING FOR SERVICE DELIVERY THROUGH NSDG IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN INDIA

The involvement of e-Governance and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in service delivery has been affecting every facet of governan ce. The public transportation sector is also enhancing their administrative and service delivery mechanism using Information and Communication Technologies. The existing public transportations ( especially buses under SRTC-State Road Transport Corporations) in India provide cataloging and trans action related information on their websites, which lags due to absence of integrated and interoperable approach. Introduction of National e-Governance Service Delivery Gateway (NSDG) through the government of India helps to interconnect various departments at central level state level and munici pal level. Public transportation especially SRTC’s of different state should exploit the functionalities of NSDG to provide interconnected network of public transportation in India. The paper elaborates proce ss mapping of public transportation for effective incorporation of National e-Governance Service Deli very Gateway (NSDG) using Accuprocess modelling tool. Process mapping provides a greater understanding of the information flow between different SRTC’s of India which provides integratio n and interoperability for public transportation.

A STUDY ON ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE TAMILNADU STATE TRANSPORT CORPORATION IN VILLUPURAM DISTRICT

The term organizational climate it is the distinctive work environment that influences the behaviour of the individuals employed in an organization. It is a set of measurable properties of the work environment perceived directly or indirectly by the people who live and work in the environment and assumed to influence their motivation and behaviour. Organizational climate within an organization refers to how organizational environments are perceived and interpreted by its employees. It is to survive and continue to play a vital role in the promotion of cognitive, affective and practical competence in individuals and ensure the preservation of our cultural values. It is important that the teachers who are responsible for helping the students to acquire the k nowledge, skills and practical orientations essential for self as well as for national development, be effectively motivated. This study discusses and analyses various components of organization climate of employees working in Tamilnadu state transport corporation (Villupuram) Division.
