Strengthening Rehabilitation Professional Identities: Including Grief Education as a Psychosocial Aspect of Disability

The primary objective of this paper is to call attention to rehabilitation counseling educators and leaders to include grief support as part of the rehabilitation counseling training curriculum. Disability and chronic illness have long been associated with loss, death anxiety, and chronic sorrow. The prevailing model of psychosocial adaptation to chronic illness and disability emanated from grief theories and has been well conceptualized and applied in both understanding disability experiences and providing effective services. However, rehabilitation counselors have expressed a lack of competency and confidence in understanding grief as a psychosocial concept and providing grief support for people with chronic illness and disabilities. Too often, pervasive understanding of grief and loss has been associated with pathology and prescriptive notions, which have been criticized by clinicians and scholars in bereavement research and practice. To address this concern, this paper proposes including grief support education in rehabilitation counselor training curricula. In addition, several suggestions are made for program design and implementation within the context of CACREP curricula requirements.

The Pedagogy of Rehabilitation Counseling: Perceptions of Rehabilitation Educators

The purpose of this study was to incorporate Bloom’s cognitive levels (Remembering/Knowledge, Understanding/Comprehension, Applying/Application, Evaluating, and Creating/Synthesis) of understanding for rehabilitation counselor training programs. Forty rehabilitation counselor educators completed an online survey rating how important, how confident, and how frequently each participant incorporated the six learning domains of Bloom’s taxonomy within the classroom. The results indicate that rehabilitation counseling educators stated that they felt confident and that it is important to implement all the learning domains of Bloom’s taxonomy. Rehabilitation counseling educators indicated that application learning domain has the most impact on student learning. This study also provides implications and future directions to help discussion among rehabilitation counselor educators.

PurposeTo validate an 80-item self-report measure, A Systems Approach to Placement: Self-Assessment for Students and Counselors (SAP-SASC), designed to identify critical areas of knowledge, skills, and competencies possessed by rehabilitation counselors in state vocational rehabilitation (VR) agency settings.Participants275 rehabilitation counselors from state VR agencies in Louisiana, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and tribal VR in Oklahoma participated in this study.MethodDescriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) were utilized to validate the factorial structure of the SAP-SASC.ResultsEFA revealed a six-factor solution comprising professional competence related to the following subsystems: employer, health and education, client, social and contextual, funding, and placement personnel. The internal consistency reliability coefficients for the six sub-scales range from .90 to .96. Counselors in this study rated themselves as having high competence in addressing direct job placement, formal education/skills enhancement, and family related needs impacting delivery of VR services.ConclusionThe SAP-SASC provides a useful measure of professional competencies required for VR practices. The six key competence areas of the instrument are essential for the provision of quality VR services.

Evolution of vocational rehabilitation competencies in Australia

Over the past decade, there has been growth in the delivery of vocational rehabilitation services globally, as countries seek to control disability-related expenditure, yet there has been minimal research outside the United States on competencies required to work in this area. This study reports on research conducted in Australia to determine current job function and knowledge areas in terms of their importance and frequency of use in the provision of vocational rehabilitation. A survey comprising items from the Rehabilitation Skills Inventory-Amended and International Survey of Disability Management was completed by 149 rehabilitation counselors and items submitted to factor analysis. T-tests and analyses of variance were used to determine differences between scores of importance and frequency and differences in scores based on work setting and professional training. Six factors were identified as important and frequently used: (i) vocational counseling, (ii) professional practice, (iii) personal counseling, (iv) rehabilitation case management, (v) workplace disability case management, and (vi) workplace intervention and program management. Vocational counseling, professional practice and personal counseling were significantly more important and performed more frequently by respondents in vocational rehabilitation settings than those in compensation settings. These same three factors were rated significantly higher in importance and frequency by those with rehabilitation counselor training when compared with those with other training. In conclusion, although 'traditional' knowledge and skill areas such as vocational counseling, professional practice, and personal counseling were identified as central to vocational rehabilitation practice in Australian rehabilitation agencies, mean ratings suggest a growing emphasis on knowledge and skills associated with disability management practice.

A Certificate of Graduate Study in Psychiatric Rehabilitation: Responding to a Multi-agency Need

This article explores key areas for academic emphasis in the training of rehabilitation counselors and other professionals to work with individuals with severe, long-term mental illnesses. The author identifies a set of knowledge areas and skills for psychiatric rehabilitation professionals emerging from an extensive literature review. The rationale and course content of a Certificate of Graduate Study in Psychiatric Rehabilitation from the University of South Carolina is presented.

The Use of Active Learning Strategies in Teaching Rehabilitation Counselors Clinical Skills

Important to the clinical training of rehabilitation counselors is the development of communication skills and the opportunity to process therapeutic experiences. Of equal value is the provision of concrete clinical tools to these counselors, and the chance for them to practice their skills and integrate what they've learned into their own internal frame of reference. Activities and tasks, based on active learning principles, facilitate critical thinking and expose these students to a variety of clinical topics. This holistic approach to teaching rehabilitation counselors clinical skills can aid in making them more competitive in this time of managed care, short term therapy, and services based on insurance reimbursement.

Multiculturalism and Rehabilitation Counselor Training: Recommendations for Providing Culturally Appropriate Counseling Services to American Indians With Disabilities

American Indians exhibit health‐related problems at younger ages, as compared with the general population. They also have a disproportionate number of deaths related to alcoholism, accidents, homicides, pneumonia, influenza, diabetes mellitus, and tuberculosis as compared with the general population. In terms of mental health, depression and adjustment reactions are common problems, with the suicide rate among American Indian adults being more than twice as high as that for the general population. This article delineates specific steps necessary to successfully recruit and retain American Indians in counselor training programs, proposes a curriculum for training counselors to effectively provide services to American Indians with disabilities, and discusses the responsibility of counselor educators to concern themselves with the “job placement” of their graduates.En comparación con la población engeneral, los indios americanos tienen problemas de salud a edades más jovenes y tienen un número de mortandad deproporcionada debida al alcoholismo, acidentes, homicidios, neumonía, gripe, diabetes mellitus, y tuberculosis. En terminos de salud mental, reaciones a depresión y adaptación son problemas comunes, con la media de suicidios superior al doble de la cifra para la población general. Este artículo delinea medidas específicas que son necesarias para atraer y retener indios americanos en programas de entrenamiento de consejería, propone un programa para entrenar consejeros para el suministro eficaz de servicios a indios americanos incapacitados, y discute la responsabilidad de los educadores de consejeros para implicarlos en la búsqueda de un empleo para sus graduados.

Serving the Descendants of Aztlán: A Rehabilitation Counselor Education Challenge

Rehabilitation counselor education programs are currently being challenged to include a focus on cultural differences in their curriculums. The purpose of this article is to recommend that the training of rehabilitation counselors indeed include a focus on cultural pluralism. The authors have presented a brief overview of the history, values, and beliefs of Chicanos in order to demonstrate the need for pluralism within rehabilitation counseling. Recommendations for incorporating culture specific knowledge within rehabilitation counselor graduate curriculums are presented.

Microcounseling: A counselor training format relating to sexual concerns of spinal cord injured woman

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of using the microcounseling model in the training of rehabilitation counselors to respond appropriately to the sexual concerns of spinal cord injured women. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of utilizing the microcounseling approach especially when compared to a traditional lecture and discussion teaching format. Microcounseling offers the trainee a more involved learning stimulus that involves both modeling and demonstration role-play. The implications point to the utilizing of microcounseling techniques in assisting potential counselors to develop effective counseling response skills in relating to the sexual concerns of spinal cord injured women.

An Integrative Model for Rehabilitation Training and Practice

A model for the integration of rehabilitation counselor training and practice is proposed. The emphasis is placed on examination of training and practice variables from a systems analysis competency-based perspective. Particular consideration is placed on the inter-relationship between a core curriculum for the training of rehabilitation counselors and knowledge and skill requirements necessary for practice. The proposed model incorporates client, rehabilitation counselor, and external and internal rehabilitation environment variables. In this respect rehabilitation counselor educators and practitioners will have a model for training and practice which is responsive to clients' needs while maintaining traditional academic standards. The proposed framework can be used for the training of rehabilitation counselors to work in state agencies, as well as rehabilitation facilties, and private (profit and non profit) rehabilitation organizations.

The Rehabilitation Counselor in Industry: A New Frontier

The purpose of this article is to explore the need for rehabilitation counselors within the industrial setting. The specific problems of industry, the failure to recognize rehabilitation counseling as an important problem-solving resource, the future roles and functions of the industrial rehabilitation counselor, and the potential models for future rehabilitation counselor training are discussed.

A National Survey of the Employment of Placement Specialists by General and Blind Rehabilitation Agencies

This study investigated the use of placement specialists by Vocational Rehabihtation and State Blind agencies. Minimum educational requirements and salary ranges for counselors and placement specialists were also surveyed for comparison purposes.The ,data were collected through a questionnaire, which was sent to all the State Vocational Rehabilitation and State Blind agencies. The results indicate that almost sixty percent (60%) of the surveyed agencies used placement specialists at either a local, regional, or state level. The functions performed by the placement specialist at the three levels are reported.The increase in the use of placement specialists may have a future effect on the rehabilitation counseling profession. The study suggests the opening of new employment opportunities for the rehabilitation counselor and the challenge for new placement-oriented curricula for the rehabilitation counselor training programs.

A Ten Year Follow-up of Graduates of a Rehabilitation Counselor Training Program

The purpose of this study was to conduct a ten year follow.up of graduates of the University of Georgia Rehabilitation Counselor Training Program focusing on initial and current employment status. A survey questionnaire was sent to ali graduates (n=332) and a 83% return was received. The survey indicated that 95% of the graduates were initially employed by state DVR agencies or closely related agencies. There was some attrition of graduates from the state DVR agencies for two primary reasons: (a) better salaries and (b) greater advancement opportunities. A substantial difference iIi mean salaries exists between those graduates who remained with state DVR agencies and those who were initially employed by DVR agencies and later became employed by closely related agencies. All graduates had mean salaries greater than the national average. The survey clearly indicates, based on one graduate training program results, that RCTP are preparing professional trained personnel for the rehabilitation profession.

The Effectiveness of Prepackaged Instructions for the Inservice Training of Rehabilitation Counselors

The effectiveness of an innovative prepackaged learning approach for inservice training of employed rehabilitation counselors is analyzed. Thirty learning units consisting of tape recordings and supplementary reading material which could be used at the counselors' convenience constituted the learning package. Changes in counselor knowledge were measured by an information test developed for the study. The results, as indicated by a Type I analysis of variance of the overall program effects and an analysis of covariance of the individual learning units effects, suggest that a voluntary packaged instructional approach to the conceptual training of rehabilitation counselors appears promising, but greater effort is needed in developing the training materials if the program is to be effective.

Measuring the Effectiveness and Variations of Rehabilitation Counselor Education Programs

The purpose of this study was to report initial findings from a subsample of a survey designed to assess Rehabilitation Counselor Education (RCE) programs through the perceptions of graduates. This research is one component of an effort by the Council On Rehabilitation Education to establish an accreditation procedure for master's level RCE programs. The researchers used a 107-item questionnaire to elicit responses in four areas: graduate demographic data, RCE program goals and objectives, components of graduates' involvement as students in the program, and functions of rehabilitation counselors. The analyses were based upon a randomly selected sub-sample of 534 out of 905 total graduate respondents. The preliminary findings indicated that the graduates, as a whole, had certain characteristics in common. Of those graduates surveyed, 830/0 were employed full-time, and of these, 87.60/0 were holding jobs in rehabilitationrelated work. In addition, while there tended to be general agreement on the important ingredients of rehabilitation counselor training, there was considerable variation as to the programs' patterns and degrees of educational effectiveness. Furthermore, the graduates' responses suggested practical differences among RCE programs in how well students were prepared to perform selected functions. Nevertheless, the preliminary findings imply that while master's level RCE programs do vary in educational mission and effectiveness, the programs generally prepared their students adequately for positions as rehabilitation counselors.
