THE widespread development of large suburban department store branches has taken place so recently and so fast that as yet there is little agreement on a workable theory of branch organization and control. Traditional department store organizational patterns, as discussed and codified in Paul Mazur's book, Principles of Organization Applied to Modern Retailing, were designed for the operation of a single store, and their suitability as the framework for a large-scale multiunit operation has been seriously questioned.'
