Diet quality of Japanese preschool children assessed by the Healthy Eating Index-2020: Nutrient and food group intake, as well as weekday-weekend differences.

In Japan, there are no official dietary guidelines for young children and nutrients may be insufficient on weekends, compared to weekdays at nursery schools. To ensure adequate nutrition, an appropriate dietary evaluation method is required. This study used the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020, which is based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, to evaluate the diet quality of Japanese children, examine its validity through associations with nutrient and food group intake, and compare dietary characteristics on weekdays and weekends. The participants were 669 children aged 3 to 5 years attending nursery schools across Japan. Relationships of HEI-2020 scores with nutrient and food group intake, and comparisons between weekdays and weekends were evaluated. The median HEI-2020 score was 50/100, with almost maximum scores for Total Protein Foods, Seafood and Plant Pro-teins, and Added Sugars, while Whole Grains and Refined Grains scored zero. Additionally, the largest score differences between weekdays and weekends were found in Dairy and Greens and Beans. Higher HEI-2020 scores correlated with lower saturated fatty acids intake and higher intakes of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Weekday scores were significantly higher and less varied than weekend scores. HEI-2020 can identify nutrient intake challenges in Japanese children. Greater consumption of Dairy and Greens and Beans-components that showed large weekday-weekend differences-may improve diet quality.

Tilapia is a source of protein that is healthy and low in fat. Tilapia is a source of protein that is healthy and low in fat. Animal protein is found in fish, one of which is tilapia which has a protein content of more than 16.05%. One of the causes of protein denaturation is detergent. Razmi's research results, 2021 measuring the levels of laundry waste in Martapura river water in Sungai Lulut Village obtained concentrations at a distance of 100 meters of 3.4 mg/L, a distance of 200 meters of 2.4 mg/L and a distance of 300 meters of 1.6 mg/L. To determine the effect of exposure to Linear Alkalybenzen Sulfonate (LAS) on total protein levels in tilapia in the Martapura River and the effect of differences in time intervals of exposure to Linear Alkalybenzen Sulfonate (LAS) on total protein levels in tilapia in the Martapura River. This research uses Pre Experimental with Post Test Only Control Group Design approach. The test method was carried out qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative test method was carried out by the biuret test while the quantitative test method saw the difference in the time interval of exposure to Linear Alkalybenzen Sulfonate (LAS) on the total protein content of tilapia using Visible Spectrophotometric instruments. Data analysis using One-Way ANOVA. Based on the qualitative analysis, all samples were positive in the biuret test. The results of the quantitative analysis obtained were a decrease in total protein levels at intervals of 0.3,6,9 hours with an average control at 3 hours 2.26%, 3 hours to 6 hours 4.49%, and 6 hours to 9 hours. 4.5%. 501.64 ppm. The administration of LAS with different intervals of exposure (control, 3 hours, 6 hours, 9 hours) showed a significant effect on the total protein content of tilapia, namely a decrease in the total protein content.

Haematological and Biochemical Changes in Albino Rats in Response to Bisphenol A (BPA) Exposure

The aim of this study was to investigate the haematological and biochemical alterations in albino rats induced by bisphenol A (BPA). Fifteen adult male albino rats were procured and separated into 3 different groups viz: group 1 (control), group 2 (50 mg/kg), group 3 (250 mg/kg); and were orally administered BPA at doses of 50 and 250 mg/kg/week. After 6 weeks of exposure, blood samples were collected for haematological and biochemical assay. The parameters analyzed included: red blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume, white blood cell count, differential white blood cell count, kidney and liver function tests. The results obtained revealed that there was a sequence of significant decrease (P<0.05) from the control group to group 3 (250 mg//kg) of the BPA-treated groups in the following parameters; total RBC count 7.33-4.40, Hb concentration 16.63-11.13 and PCV count 43.67-34.67. A significant increase (P<0.05) was observed in all leucogram values of BPA-treated groups when compared to the control. The serum levels of AST (44.67-71.00), ALT (13.33-46.67), ALP (64.00-86.67), Na+, K+, urea and creatinine significantly increased (P<0.05) in the groups that received BPA-treatment. There was also a non-significant reduction (P>0.05) in total protein (72.67-61.00) and albumin (49.00-25.00) in BPA-treated groups when compared to the control. These findings demonstrate that exposure of albino rats to BPA resulted in haematological defects and alteration in several biochemical parameters that indicate renal and hepatic toxicity.

Effect of Some Herbs on the Level of Some Biochemical Parameters in Blood of Diabetic Patients Type II

This study included effect of polyherbs mixture treatment of diabetic patients type II for two months. The polyherbs mixture contains Nigella sativa seeds, Boswellia carterri gum, Citrus aurantifolia fruits, Elettaria cardamomum fruits. Also this study included estimation of some biochemical parameters in the serum Diabetes Mellitus (D.M.) patients-type II and knowing the relationship of these parameters with this disease. The parameters are glucose, cholesterol ,High density , Low density lipoproteins( HDL-C, LDL-C) respectively , Triglycerides TG, urea, total protein , albumin , Alkaline phosphatase ALP,Transaminase GOT, GPT enzymes . Take (77) samples of diabetic patients serum type II which included (47) samples for group one: herbs + chemical treatment (drugs), (30) samples for group two: herbs only which were compared with (30) samples from health person as control group. From this study, the results shows that is an increase in the value of the following parameters such as glucose, cholesterol, LDL-C, TG, urea, and enzyme ALP, GOT and GPT in blood before the treatment of patients with herbs and decreasing of these values after treatment with herbs for both one & two months , but an increasing was noticed when the treatment of these patients was stopped. At the same time, the results shows a decrease in HDL-C, total protein, albumin values before treatment with herbs of these patients and an increasing after treatment but decreasing was noticed at stopping of the treatment. On the other hands, these results observed the level of cholesterol for second group of patients after treatment with polyherbs for first and second month return to normal level and LDL-C level of the two groups of patients and increasing of these levels after stopped the treatment for one month to a value approximately to the value before treatment of these patients. Also observed the levels of total protein, albumin reached to normal levels of these parameters for the second group of patients treatment at second month.

This study aimed to identify the changes in total protein in saliva and sera samples of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma in comparison to those of healthy controls. These changes were followed using electrophoresis (PAGE). Meanwhile, determinations of albumin, globulin and albumin to globulin ratio were carried out on sera samples only.Two groups were the participants in the present study, 18 patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC), and 20 ages and gender matched healthy controls.

Time Course of Biochemical and Metabolic Parameters During and After COVID-19.

Long COVID is characterized by the persistence of symptoms among individuals who are infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The enduring impact of these long-term effects on the health and well-being of those affected cannot be denied. 470 patients with SARS-CoV-2 were consecutively recruited in this longitudinal study. The participants were entered into moderate, severe, and critical groups. 235 out of 470 participants were female. The levels of fasting blood sugar (FBS), alanine transaminase (SGPT), aspartate aminotransferase (SGOT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), creatinine (Cr), urea, uric acid (UA), and total protein (TP) were measured during hospitalization and again at one and three months after infection. The levels of Zn and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) were also measured only during hospitalization. COVID-19 severity was associated with high levels of glucose, urea, Cr, ALT, AST, ALP, and HbA1c, and low levels of Zn, UA, and TP. There were significant sex differences for these markers at all three-time points. Glucose, urea, Cr, ALT, AST, and ALP all decreased three months after infection, whereas the levels of UA and TP returned towards normal. COVID-19 infection affects the levels of multiple biochemical factors in a gender-dependent manner. The biochemical changes become more tangible with increasing disease severity, and several of these predict mortality. Levels begin to return to normal after the acute phase of the disease, but in some individuals, at three months, several markers were still not within the normal range. Whether the trajectory of these changes can predict long COVID requires further testing.

Chemical, Microbiological, and Sensorial Properties of Bio-ayran Prepared using various Cultures

Background: Ayran is drinkable yoghurt that is prepared by mixing water, salt, and yoghurt, or by adding water to milk and inoculation with yoghurt culture and adding salt after fermentation. Objective: This study investigates the effect of using classic, probiotic, EPS-producing and EPS-producing + probiotic (BB12) cultures on the chemical, microbiological and sensorial characteristics of drinkable dairy product ayran. Methods: Four treatments of ayran were made using classic yogurt culture (T1), ABT-5 culture (T2), exopolysaccharide (EPS) producing culture (YO-Flex Mild 1.0) (T3), and EPS-producing culture + Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB12 (mixture culture) (T4). Results: Sample T2 had the lowest acidity values during the fermentation period. While sample T2 had the highest pH values, the total solids, fat, and total protein contents of the ayran treatments were unaffected by culture type. Mineral contents slightly decreased in samples T3 and T4. In comparison to other treatments, sample 4 had higher counts of S. thermophilus, L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, and Bifidobacterium. The recommended level of probiotic bacteria (107 cfu g −1 ) was exceeded for all treatments, particularly T4, and remained above (107 cfu g −1 ) until the end of storage. Moreover, Ayran, made with mixture culture (T4), received the highest sensory evaluation scores. Conclusion: Mixture culture (EPS-producing culture + BB12) is a good starter to make bioayran containing high counts of probiotics.

Production and Evaluation of Peanut Butter Prepared with Peanut Shells

Background: Innovative application of processing is an emerging trend in food production. Objective: The present study was conducted to produce peanut butter and evaluate the physical, chemical, and sensory properties of the product, to which the outer shells of peanuts were added in different proportions (5, 10, 15%) to reduce the calories of the product by reducing the fat content in the peanut butter as well as benefiting from the shells as a residue secondary to the peanut seeds. Methods: The chemical composition of the prepared sample, along with bioactive determination Using HPLC, microbial testing, Aflatoxin content, and sensory evaluation, have been done for the prepared peanut butter using standard methods. Results: The chemical composition of the peanut outer shell powder was characterized by the highest value of fiber (46.6%), followed by total carbohydrates and protein (23.25%, (12.54%) respectively. The produced peanut butter showed that the total carbohydrate resulted in the highest value (23.25%), followed by fat (42.21) and protein (28.12%). Substitution at 5, 10, and 15% peanut outer shell resulted in a non-significant difference concerning protein. At the same time, the lipid content showed a significant decrease compared to the control. A similar trend was found concerning total carbohydrate-to-fat content. Total fiber increased to 1.5 & 2.08, and 2.6 times as high as the content parallel to dietary fiber, while β-Carotene decreased significantly due to the substitution level. The substitution level decreased energy (cal) by about 203.58, 730.093, 562.86, 545.19, and 526.66, respectively, compared with the control. A slight increase was found in the mineral content due to the substitution, except for the calcium increases at 15%. DPPH and ABTS% increased in parallel with the substitution level, which was in line with total phenols and flavonoids. Flavonoid fraction resulted in nariagin (94.72 QE), the major flavonoid, followed by lutein (82.23 QE). Meanwhile, phenolic compounds were described with pyrogallol (68.31 GAE) (as the main compound, followed by chlorogenic (780.76 GAE). The fatty acid composition showed that oleic and linoleic were predominant in all treatments. Bacterial, yeast, and mold counts appeared after three months of storage (20 ± 2°C). Aflatoxin was not detectable in the sample of the peanut outer shells and peanut butter samples. Sensory characteristics showed approximately the same score for all treatments except that of 15% substitution, which resulted in a significant decrease in all parameters compared with the control. Conclusion: This study reported that 5%, followed by 10% of peanut outer shells, were the most suitable levels for making peanut butter, improving the nutritional value by increasing the percentage of fiber and antioxidants in peanut shells, leading to better quality products and shelf life.

ABSTRACT: Psidiummyrtoides fruits food industries produce by-products such as liqueurs, ice cream, jellies, and juices. However, there needs to be more information about the nutritional composition of fruits, as well as the biological potential, mainly of seed flour.Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the nutritional composition and antioxidant and cancer chemopreventive activities of pulp and seed of fruits of Psidiummyrtoides. Moisture content, total minerals and mineral profile, total lipids and fatty acids profile, total proteins, dietary fiber (soluble and insoluble) and total carbohydrates were analyzed. Vitamins C and complex B, organic acids and the profile of phenolic compounds were also determined. DPPH and ABTS methods evaluated the antioxidant activity, and cancer chemopreventive activity was evaluated by quinone reductase induction and NF-κB inhibitory activity. The fruits are a good source of thiamine, iron, phosphorus, potassium, fiber, and protein. Linoleic acid was the major fatty acid in both pulp and seed. Quercetin (1600 µg/100g) and pyrogallol(819 µg/100g) were the major phenolic compounds pulp and seed, respectively. The fruits showed strong antioxidant capacity, mainly the seeds, and the ability to induce quinone reductase activity, highlighting a cancer chemopreventive activity. Seed flour has a high potential to enrich food, in addition to valuing agro-industrial by-products, where we can highlight 25%, 13% and 37% of the recommended daily intake for iron (1.6 mg/100g), phosphorus (58 mg/100g) and vitamin B1 (450 µg/100g), respectively, in addition to antioxidant and cancer chemopreventive activities.

Antianemic Activity of Allolobophora caliginosa Extract against Phenylhydrazine-induced Anemia in Rats

Background:: Anemia is a global hematological disorder. Earthworms have antimicrobial, antispasmodic, antihypertensive, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, and anticoagulant properties. Objective:: Our study aimed to investigate the anti-anemic activity of the earthworm Allolobophora caliginosa extract (AcE) on phenylhydrazine-induced hemolytic anemia in rats. Methods:: Eighteen adult male albino rats were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 6 per group) as follows: Control, PHZ, and AcE-treated groups. Induction of anemia was done by intraperitoneal administration of phenylhydrazine (40 mg/kg) for 2 consecutive days. Treatment of AcE by intraperitoneal injection (45 mg/kg) for six successive days. Results:: Treatment of anemic rats with AcE extract caused significant increases in red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin (HB), hematocrit (HCT), total protein (TP), albumin, glutathione reduced (GSH), catalase (CAT), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), as compared to the PHZ group. While, mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO) levels significantly decreased after intraperitoneal administration of AcE, when compared to the PHZ group. Liver sections from the AcEtreated group restored the normal micromorphological features of the liver. The expression of caspase- 3 was weak and/or there was no expression in the liver sections from AcE groups. AcE caused a significant reduction in the incidence of DNA damage, which appeared as less DNA in the tails. Conclusion:: The present research sheds light on the antianemic efficacy of AcE in rats. This study reveals that AcE has antianemic activity, which can be linked to its iron and branched-chain amino acid content, as well as antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties.

Evaluation of Neuroprotective effect of Cassia occidentalis L. against Colchicine Induced Memory Impairment in Wistar Rats

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder that develops with aging. Objective: In this research, we have examined the anti - Alzheimer’s effect of ethanolic extract from roots of Cassia occidentalis L. on colchicine-induced Alzheimer’s in Wistar rats Methods: Ethanolic extract was obtained and spectroscopic, chromatography analysis was performed. Acute toxicity studies using Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Guidelines 423 were performed to examine and make sure that there were no signs of toxic effects. The induction of AD was done using colchicine which leads to symptoms like neurotoxicity, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration. In this experiment, a thorough analysis of body weight, behavioral parameters, locomotor activity, and biochemical evaluation was performed to estimate the medicinal properties of Cassia occidentalis L in treating Alzheimer’s disease. Results: Pharmacognostic analysis showed the presence of vascular bundles, starch grains, fibers, calcium oxalate crystals, elongated parenchyma, and collenchyma mucilage as shown in the supplementary files. Locomotor activity, Escape latency time, Conditioned avoidance response, and Transfer latency were improved with treatment. Interleukin- 6 (IL - 6) levels were reduced significantly in the Colchicine + 200 Cassia mg/kg group (739.2 ± 0.37 pg/ml) than in the Colchicine Group (850.6±0.40 pg/ml). Tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) was decreased in the Colchicine + 200 Cassia mg/kg Group (1030.93±0.51 pg/ml) than in the Colchicine Group (1455.06±1.25 pg/ml). A significant decrease in total protein level was observed in the Colchicine Group (2.52±0.10 mg/ml), (3.33±0.90 mg/ml) as compared to Colchicine + 200 Cassia mg/kg Group (5.27±0.09 mg/ml, (5.01±0.10 mg/ml) respectively, in the Hippocampus and Entorhinal cortex. The levels of antioxidant enzymes such as Catalase (CAT), Serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), Reduced glutathione (GSH) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured. When compared to the Colchicine Group (7.33±0.16 nM/ mg, the MDA level was lower in the Colchicine + 100 Cassia mg/kg Group (3.20±0.01 nM/ mg). The level of CAT in Colchicine + 200 Cassia mg/kg Group (7.01±0.03 μmoles of H2O2/mg of protein) was seen to be increased when compared to Colchicine Group (3.32 ± 0.17 μmoles of H2O2/mg of protein). The level of SOD in Colchicine + 200 Cassia mg/kg Group (7.43±0.02 U mg -1 of protein) was seen to be increased when compared with Colchicine Group (4.55±0.03 U mg -1 of protein). The level of GSH in Colchicine + 200 Cassia mg/kg Group (10.07±0.19 nM/mg -1 of protein) was increased when compared with the Colchicine Group (5.82±0.11nM/mg -1 of protein). Histopathology of the Hippocampus and Entorhinal cortex showed diminished amyloid plaques, and neurodegeneration in the treatment groups Conclusion: The present study showed that ethanolic extract from the roots of Cassia occidentalis L. At 100 and 200 mg/kg doses in Wistar rats improved memory damage, by reducing oxidative stress. Levels of the antioxidant enzymes as CAT, and SOD, GSH were increased and MDA was decreased. The cytokine levels in the serum of Wistar rats of IL-6 level and TNF-α level were reduced significantly. Estimation of total protein level was found to be increased. It restored neuronal degeneration in the Hippocampus, and Entorhinal cortex and reduced oxidative stress. This suggests that the ethanolic extract of Cassia occidentalis L. could be an effective therapeutic treatment for neurodegenerative diseases like AD.

Physio-biochemical responses of registered bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes to drought stress: Variations in antioxidant parameters and photosynthetic pigment amounts

In this study, physio-biochemical parameters of 7 registered bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes (Gerek 79, Sultan 95, Haymana 79, Grk/Cty, T98-9, Pastor, PM ME1) were investigated under drought stress conditions. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), photosynthetic pigment, total protein, hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxidation (malonyldialdehyde-MDA) and proline levels were determined in this wheat genotypes exposed to different drought duration (3rd, 6th and 10th day). As a result of this study, among 7 different wheat genotypes, Gerek 79 and Haymana 79 genotypes were the most physiologically sensitive to drought. In comparison, Pastor and Sultan 95 genotypes were the most drought-tolerant varieties. In addition, in parallel with the prolongation of the drought period in wheat varieties in general, it was determined that the content of photosynthetic pigments decreased significantly due to oxidative damage, while proline and MDA content increased

Dehorning Does Not Alter the Stress Response in Southern White Rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum simum) during Transport: A Preliminary Investigation.

Translocation and dehorning are common and important practices for rhinoceros management and conservation. It is not known if dehorning causes a stress response or negatively affects rhinoceroses during transport. Twenty-three subadult wild Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) bulls were immobilized and translocated >280 km for population management reasons. Ten animals were dehorned at capture, and 13 animals were transported without dehorning. For transport, five dehorned and six nondehorned rhinoceroses were sedated with azaperone (62.38±9.54 μg/kg) and five dehorned and seven nondehorned rhinoceroses with midazolam (64.61±9.28 μg/kg). Blood samples were collected at capture, start of transport, and after 6 h of transport. Measurements included 10 physiologic variables: hematocrit, total serum protein, creatine kinase (CK), aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), creatinine, urea, cholesterol, β-hydroxybutyrate, and glucose; and four stress response variables: cortisol, epinephrine, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and leukocyte coping capacity. Using a linear mixed model, CK and GGT were higher in dehorned compared with nondehorned rhinoceroses. There were no significant differences in the other variables between the two groups. The likely cause of these differences is that dehorned animals spent more time in the crate before the start of transport than nondehorned rhinoceroses (3:11±0:54 h vs. 1:12±0:56 h, P<0.001). These results indicate that dehorning does not negatively alter the white rhinoceros' physiologic and stress responses during translocation, supporting its use for antipoaching measures.

Natural Anticoagulant Protein Levels in Patients With Beta-Thalassemia Major: A Case-Control Study.

β-thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders that affect the production of β-globin chains, leading to the reduction or absence of these chains. One of the complications observed in patients with β-thalassemia major (β-TM) is thrombosis, especially in those who receive frequent blood transfusions. This may be due to a decrease in the levels of the natural anticoagulants: protein C (PC), total protein S (PS), and antithrombin (AT). In this case-control study, patients with β-TM, who had received at least 20 packed cell transfusions during their lifetime, were included. Patients with other underlying diseases like bleeding or thrombotic disorders were excluded. Totally, 118 patients with β-TM and 120 healthy individuals were included. The mean level of PC and AT was significantly lower in patients with β-TM (48.2 ± 65.4 and 57.42 ± 13.6, respectively) compared to the control group (97.1 ± 21.46 and 81.79 ± 14.3, respectively), with P value of 0.001 and 0.01, respectively. Although the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.1), a similar trend was observed for total PS (61.12 ± 21.12 for patients versus 72.2 ± 35.2 for the control group). Of note, the decrease in PC, AT, and total PS levels compared to the control group was 50.36%, 27.5%, and 15.34%, respectively. It seems that β-TM patients who receive prolonged blood transfusions frequently are at an increased risk of decreased in natural anticoagulants levels and therefore potentially are at risk of thrombosis.

The role and mechanism of the zinc finger gene ZNF580 in foam cell formation

Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease is an important threat to human health. The pathological basis is atherosclerosis, and foam cell formation is the key link in the initiation of atherosclerosis. Here, foam cell models were established using 50 ng/ml oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) to stimulate in vitro cultures of THP-1 cells for 72 h. The expression of ZNF580, a Cys2–His2 (C2H2) zinc finger protein containing 172 amino acids that was originally cloned by screening a human aortic cDNA library, was measured in foam cells, and its interaction with various regulatory factors during foam cell formation was investigated. Oil red O (ORO) staining was used to observe cell morphology and intracellular lipid levels. Lentivirus transfection was used to induce high ZNF580 expression (Ad-ZNF580) and low ZNF580 expression (Si-ZNF580) in THP-1 cells, and a fluorescent inverted microscope was used to observe the distribution of ZNF580 immunofluorescence to deduce the transfection rate. RNA and total protein were extracted, and the expression levels of ZNF580, cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36), peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ), ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) were measured by real-time quantitative PCR. The protein levels were examined by western blotting to evaluate the interaction between ZNF580 and associated regulatory factors. ZNF580 can significantly increase the expression levels of ApoE and ABCA1 and significantly decrease the expression levels of CD36 and PPAR-γ, suggesting that ZNF580-mediated inhibition of foam cell formation is associated with the PPAR-γ-CD36 signalling pathway. Based on these findings, ZNF580 might be a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of coronary atherosclerotic heart disease.

HAEMATOLOGICAL AND SERUM BIOCHEMICAL RESPONSES OF RABBIT BUCKS TO QUANTITATIVE FEED RESTRICTION AND FEEDING TIME

The experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of feed restriction, feeding time and their interaction on haematological and serum profile in rabbit bucks. Eighteen (18) rabbit bucks were used for the study. The rabbit bucks were fed 75.00, 67.50 and 60.00g commercial growers’ pellets to represent 100, 90 and 80% daily ration respectively. The eighteen rabbit bucks were divided into two groups of nine (9) bucks each. The first group was fed in the morning while the second group was fed their daily ration in the evening. Bucks fed 100% daily ration served as control. The study adopted a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement in completely randomized design (CRD). At the end of the 4th week of the experiment, blood samples were collected from each replicate for determination of hematological and serum biochemical indices. Data obtained were subjected to General linear model (GLM) procedure in a completely randomized design, using IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21. The result showed that feed restriction affected (p&lt;0.05) PCV, WBC, neutrophils, lymphocytes and platelets of rabbit bucks in the study. Feeding time significantly influenced (p&lt;0.05) PCV, neutrophils and lymphocytes. Restricted feeding significantly affected (p&lt;0.05) total protein, creatinine and serum enzymes. There was significant interaction between feed restriction and time of feeding on AST and ALT of the bucks fed 90% daily ration. In conclusion, Feeding rabbit bucks 90% of their daily ration in the evening improves most haematological and serum biochemical parameters without compromising the health of the animals.

Biochemical Changes: Their Potential Role against Fungal Disease Resistance Development in Mustard

Rape-seed mustard is an imperative edible oilseed crop which is adversely affected by different biotic stresses causing import of edible oils from abroad. The experiment was carried out for screening mustard genotypes based on disease indexing and putative role of diverse biochemical parameters in development of resistant against three major fungal diseases. A modified 0-9 scale was used for rating of disease indicators to calculate disease incident (DI). In disease indexing, mustard genotypes L-4, GSC-7 and PC-6 were considered as immune against Alternaria brassicae, Maya, L-4, China, GSL-1, GSC-7, PC-5, PC-6 and RP-9 were classified as immune against Albugo candida while L-4 and PC-5 were found immune against Erysiphe cruciferarum. The study of biochemical constituents demonstrated that these immune genotypes accumulated higher osmolytes content including free proline content and total phenol under diseased condition showing their tolerance ability against these pathogens. The tolerant genotypes also had lesser lipid peroxidation rate as indicated by malondialdehyde content analysis to induce lesser effect on total chlorophyll, amino acids, proteins and soluble sugars including reducing and non-reducing sugars. These identified genotypes have wider scope for further phyto-pathological studies and utilization in development of fungal resistance breeding.
