Enhanced indigenous bacteria-mediated bioremediation of aged petroleum-contaminated soil by Fenton pretreatment: Synergistic effect of soil environmental improvement and microbial community response

Due to the harsh soil environment and low microbial activity, the efficacy of indigenous bacteria-mediated bioremediation is often limited in aged petroleum-contaminated soils. In this study, Fenton pretreatment (H2O2: 200 ∼ 600 mmol/kg, H2O2: Fe2+ = 100: 1) was applied to improve the aged soil environment and rebuild the microbial community to enhance subsequent bioremediation. After pretreated by 400 mmol/kg H2O2 and 4 mmol/kg Fe2+ (T2), the removal efficiency of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) was elevated to 93.27 %, equivalent to 1.96-fold of the natural attenuation (CK). Additionally, the half-life of biodegradation was shorted to 45.57 d, representing a decrease to 0.29-fold that of CK. Correlation analysis revealed a radar plot comprising five indicators, including bacterial quantification (BQ), dehydrogenase (DHA), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), permeability coefficient (K), and bulk density coefficient (γ), all of which exhibited positive correlations with TPHs degradation. Compared to CK, Fenton pretreatment increased the richness and evenness of the microbial community during incubation, thus facilitating TPHs biodegradation. Moreover, Fenton pretreatment accelerated the shift of the dominant genus in T2 from Pseudomonas (0.599) to Pseudomonas (0.258), Nocardioides (0.109), Dietzia (0.157), and Stenotrophomonas (0.120) throughout the incubation. Based on the analysis of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), the metabolism and enzymatic functional genes related to the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in T2 were enhanced during incubation, accounting for the high removal efficiency of TPHs. These findings demonstrated that moderate Fenton pretreatment was an effective approach to stimulate indigenous bacteria for the enhanced biodegradation of aged petroleum-contaminated soil.

Activation of persulfate by g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC for degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon in groundwater

In this study, we synthesized a high removal efficiency catalyst using biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron and g-C3N4, denoted as g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC, to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in groundwater. We characterized the morphology and physiochemical properties of g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), BET surface area analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To assess the performance of the g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC catalyst, we investigated various reaction parameters, such as the mass ratio of g-C3N4 to nZVI@SBC, PS concentration, initial pH, initial TPH concentration, and the presence of coexisting ions in the system. The results from batch experiments and repeated use trials indicate that g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC exhibited both excellent catalytic activation capability and impressive durability, making it a promising choice for TPH degradation. Specifically, when the PS concentration reached 1 mM, the catalyst dosage was 0.3 g/L, and the g-C3N4 to nZVI@SBC mass ratio was 2, we achieved a remarkable TPH removal efficiency of 93.8%. Through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) testing and quenching experiments, we identified sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide radicals as the primary active substance involved in the TPH degradation process. Moreover, the g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC composite proved highly effective for in-situ TPH removal from groundwater and displayed an 86% removal rate, making it a valuable candidate for applications in permeable reactive barriers (PRB) aimed at enhancing environmental remediation. In summary, by skillfully utilizing g-C3N4/nZVI@SBC, this study has made notable advancements in synthesis and characterization, presenting a feasible and innovative approach to addressing TPH pollution in groundwater.

Remediation of petroleum‐contaminated soil by Fenton oxidation–pyrolysis

AbstractPetroleum‐contaminated soil (PCS) is urgently to be remediated due to its risk to ecological environment and human health. In this study, a Fenton oxidation–pyrolysis strategy was employed to accomplish effective petroleum removal and PCS remediation. The highest total petroleum hydrocarbon removal efficiency could achieve 99.6% after 2 h Fenton oxidation, with H2O2/Fe2+, 6:1, and pH 3, followed by pyrolysis at 370°C. The organic compositions of the soil after Fenton oxidation, the kinetics and process of the pyrolysis, morphologies and structures of the treated soil, as well as energy consumption and cost savings were comprehensively researched and analyzed. Through the Fenton oxidation–pyrolysis treatment, the macromolecules were effectively degraded and the contents of asphaltenes and resins were significantly reduced in the soil. Graphitized carbon was dominatingly existed after the pyrolysis. A 1.5 order reaction model was proposed to reasonably describe the pyrolysis remediation process of PCS. The Fenton oxidation–pyrolysis treatment can reduce energy consumption and cost compared with pyrolysis alone. This work not only offered an alternative approach of PCS remediation, but also provided theoretical guidance for practical soil remediation.

Effect of Ludwigia octovalvis biomass ratio on hydrocarbon phytotoxicity

Phytoremediation, an environmentally friendly approach that uses plants to break down and remove contaminants from the environment, as a viable treatment for the removal of hydrocarbons. It has the potential to be more efficient, less expensive, and more ecologically friendly than the conventional treatment. This study aimed to determine the phytoremediation capability of native plant, Ludwigia octovalvis, by varying the biomass of plants to 100 % petroleum sludge with 33,368 mg/kg total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH). After 30 days of treatment, a different biomass of L. octovalvis (0.106 g of plants/g of TPH, 0.159 g of plants/g of TPH and 0.212 g of plants/g of TPH) was exposed to 30 kg petroleum sludge. Two treatments with and without plants were tested to investigate if there is an effect of plant number on the removal of TPH in sludge. Results revealed that exposure to real petroleum sludge had removal efficiencies of 45.2 % (106.2 g biomass of plants), 30.1 % (159.3 g biomass of plants) and 40.0 % (212.4 g biomass of plants). Relative growth rate (RGR) analysis showed that as the biomass of plants increased, the concentration of pollutant decreased. Scanning electron microscopic analysis showed that plant root had increasing C percentage in the root part compared to stem. The plant biomass of 106.2 g had the highest TPH removal efficiency in 30 kg petroleum sludge, and the ratio of plant biomass to TPH mass was 0.106 g/g. The results could be used as a basis for other research on scaling up phytoremediation.

Switchable hydrophilicity solvents incorporating hydrophilic deep eutectic solvents: A sustainable alternative for oil-based drilling cuttings washing

Oil-based drilling cuttings (OBDC) contaminated by total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) causes detrimental environmental consequences. Solvents washing is capable of separating TPH from OBDC efficiently, but their high volatility and toxicity limit the large-scale application. Here a sustainable OBDC washing strategy is developed by using a heterogeneous mixture (SHSs&HDESs) which is consisted of switchable hydrophilicity solvents (SHSs) and hydrophilic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs). N, N-Dimethylcyclohexylamine (DMCHA) and CHEG (choline chloride/ethylene glycol) is respectively selected as the optimum SHSs and HDESs, considering the miscibility with TPH and recovery capacity. The advantage of the sustainable washing strategy originates from the synergistic effect for enhancing forward the TPH removal efficiency, where DMCHA plays the role on TPH extraction and dilution, and CHEG promotes the detachment of TPH from sands surfaces. Based on the Box-Behnken experimental design of response surface method, the TPH removal efficiency reaches a maximum value of 96.02 % at the derived optimal washing conditions, including 32 °C, 19.81 mL DMCHA, and 9.62 mL CHEG. TPH can be separated from DMCHA by CO2-induced hydrophobicity transformation, DMCHA is recovered upon N2/65 °C afterwards, and CHEG is recovered by liquid separation. The recovered SHSs&HDESs heterogeneous mixture shows good reusability in subsequent OBDC washing processes. Our findings offer a sustainable approach for efficiently OBDC washing, which is expected to overcome the inherent defects of solvents washing methods.

Enhancing electrokinetic remediation of TPH-Cr(VI) co-contaminated soils with biochar-immobilized bacteria as biological permeable reactive barriers

The co-contamination soil caused by petroleum pollution poses a significant challenge for remediation. The complexity of pollution composition and interaction increases the difficulty of the remediation process. This study established a methodology that employs biochar-immobilized bacteria to enhance the electrokinetic (EK) remediation technique. A 25-day experiment was conducted in the laboratory to remediate co-contaminated soil with total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH) (9252.51 mg/kg) and Cr (VI) (147.17 mg/kg). The results indicate that adding biochar-immobilized bacteria leads to the most effective remediation performance in the EK system. Compared to the standalone EK remediation, TPH removal efficiency increased by 22.57 %, and the removal rate of Cr (VI) increased by 53.15 %. The study also examined the response of microbial communities in the remediation system. The study results on microbial diversity reveal that introducing the EK system reduces the diversity of soil microbial communities. In contrast, incorporating biochar-immobilized bacteria impacts the microbial community structure in the soil, enhancing microbial communities’ stability. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of adding biochar-immobilized bacteria in enhancing EK remediation of co-contaminated soil and its impact on microbial community structure.

Bioremediation of diesel oil: potential use of bacteria consortium Lactobacillus fermentum and Clostridium beijerinckii in degrading Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH)

Diesel oil is a major petroleum-refined product known as the primary environmental pollutant due to its toxic complex hydrocarbons and difficulty in decomposing naturally. This study aims to determine the efficiency of TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) removal in the bioremediation process of diesel oil pollution by utilizing a bacteria consortium of Lactobacillus fermentum and Clostridium beijerinckii as biocatalysts. The diesel oil degradation test was conducted on a laboratory scale using Stone Mineral Salt Solution (SMSs) liquid media with a batch system (limited culture). The temperature was set at 30°C with a rotation speed of 150 rpm for 10 days. Different treatments of pH (5, 7, 9) and contact time (10, 20, 30 days) were applied to varied diesel oil concentrations (5, 10, 20%, v/v). The oil components were measured using Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector. Diesel oil samples were put into SMSs containing 10% bacterial consortium and 10% NPK fertilizer. The sensitivity test showed that the bacterial consortium was resistant, proven by the absence of an inhibition zone around the disc paper area containing diesel oil. The highest TPH removal efficiency found was 97.3% when 5% diesel oil was degraded by the bacterial consortium at pH 7 for 20 days. This study proves that the bacterial consortium can be recommended in bioremediation to alleviate diesel oil pollution in the environment.

Fast Direct Oxidation of All Alkanes in Soil by Hydrophilic Fe-SOM

ABSTRACT Conventional Fenton chemical oxidation was more difficult to directly oxid all alkanes of long, mid and short-chain alkanes in oil-contaminated soil. To investigate the direct and fast oxidation mechanism of all alkanes in the soil by the fast oxidation group using two different soils for the direct oxidation experiments. The results showed that the hydrophilic Fe-SOM rich in hydrophilic groups could directly oxidize all alkanes in the soil with a high removal rate of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) (59.0%–72.5%). Similarly, for the oxidation of long-chain alkanes (C23-C30), the fast oxidation group in which the hydrophilic Fe-SOM was located had higher removal rates (52%-64%). Regarding long chain oxidation per unit hydroxyl radicals (•OH) intensity, the fast oxidation group was significantly higher than the slow oxidation group (1.3–4.2 times). The results revealed a well-linear fit (r2 = 0.97, 0.81) for total iron and FeOOH with hydrophilic groups such as C=O and C-O-C in the fast oxidation group regarding content. Hydrophilic Fe-SOM enabled the rapid decomposition (51% − 88%) of H2O2 in the presence of hydrophilic promoters such as humic acid (49%−79%). The hydrophilic groups and hydrophilic promoters made the •OH generated by decomposition collide and react with pollutants rapidly to maximize the •OH in the liquid phase. The TPH removal efficiency per the unit intensity of •OH in the fast oxidation group was 3.74 times higher than in the slow oxidation group. The long-chain removal efficiency was 4.2 times higher than that in the slow oxidation group. The above results indirectly proved that the oxidation reaction in the fast oxidation group occurred at the petroleum pollutants and also demonstrated that the technology is an in situ oxidation technology. This technology can directly oxidize all petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil and has excellent engineering application value.

Study on Amendment of Rapeseed Meal, Soybean Meal, and NPK Fertilizer as Biostimulants in Bioremediation of Diesel-Contaminated Soil by Autochthonous Microorganisms

ABSTRACT The adverse impact of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) can be mitigated through bioremediation. However, the efficiency of bioremediation is often compromised due to its slow speed. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the promoting effect of organic and inorganic biostimulants on the bioremediation rate of autochthonous microorganisms. The study examined the impact of rapeseed meal (biostimulation-BS1), soybean meal (BS2), and NPK fertilizer (BS3), as biostimulants on pH, bacterial and fungal count, enzymatic activities, and also TPH values of diesel-contaminated soil. The results revealed that amending the soil with rapeseed meal, soybean meal, and NPK fertilizer resulted in a significant increase in dehydrogenase and catalase activities, with 9.96, 7.7, and 6.75-fold and 2.52, 2.4, and 2.52-fold enhancement, respectively, compared to natural attenuation (NA-as control) which contains diesel-contaminated soil without any organic or inorganic amendments. Moreover, the pH value of the BS1 (6.4) and BS2 (6.77) groups was almost neutral. The growth of heterotrophic and hydrocarbon-utilizing bacteria and fungi was significantly improved with organic matter amendment (P < .05). The TPH removal efficiencies in natural attenuation, BS1, BS2, BS3, and rapeseed meal+ soybean meal+ NPK fertilizer (BS4) groups were 49.22%, 71.65%, 90.55%, 65.77%, and 55.25%, respectively. Molecular identification revealed that three hydrocarbon-utilizing bacteria belonged to various genera, including Nocardiopsis, Streptomyces, and Mammaliicoccus. Overall, this study suggests that amending organic compounds to contaminated soil is an effective, cost-effective, and eco-friendly strategy to improve the bioremediation rate of autochthonous microorganisms.

Remediation of soils contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons through soil washing with surfactant solutions

ABSTRACT Soil fulfils vital functions for life on Earth and so, just like water and air, its protection from all sources of contamination is a major concern. However, the extensive use of petroleum derived products, either as energy sources or as commodities, leads to important environmental liabilities. Ex situ soil washing is a technology to concentrate contaminants, allowing soil cleaning and the reuse of extracted petroleum derived products. This work focuses on the optimization of ex situ soil washing process using surfactants, introducing an evaluation of the washing solution recycling and its after use safe disposal, promoting the reduction of raw materials, energy and water resources costs. Two surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate (Tween 80), were tested in the decontamination of an artificially contaminated soil with engine lubricant oil waste. The optimization of the washing conditions, such as stirring speed, liquid–solid ratio, number of washing stages, and surfactant concentration, was carried out using a design of experiments (DOE) software, so that the maximum extraction efficiency of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) was achieved. A TPH removal efficiency of (80.7 ± 3.2)% was obtained with Tween 80 after 5 h of washing and (90.7 ± 2.8)% with SDS after 2 h at 200 rpm on an orbital shaker with a liquid to solid ratio (L/S) of 15. The potential for reuse of the washing solutions was evaluated. Finally, the discharge of the washing solution was considered using activated carbon to remove the surfactants and ensure its safe disposal.

Surfactant-enhanced bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil and microbial community response: A field study

Surfactant-enhanced bioremediation (SEBR) is frequently employed to clean up soil polluted with petroleum hydrocarbons, but few studies have focused on how surfactants affect microbial communities and different fractions of petroleum hydrocarbons, particularly in the field. Here, the surfactants sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS), Triton X-100 (TX-100), Tween80, and rhamnolipid were combined with the oil-degrading bacterium Pseudomonas sp. SB to remediate oil-contaminated soil in the laboratory. AOS gave the highest removal efficiency (65.1%) of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs). Therefore, AOS was used in a field experiment with Pseudomonas sp. SB and the removal efficiency of TPHs and long-chain hydrocarbons C21–C40 reached 57.4 and 53.0%, respectively, significantly higher than the other treatments. During bioremediation the addition of Pseudomonas sp. SB significantly stimulated the growth of bacterial genera such as Alcanivorax, Luteimonas, Parvibaculum, Stenotrophomonas, and Pseudomonas and AOS further stimulated the growth of Sphingobacterium, Pseudomonas and Alcanivorax. This study validates the feasibility of surfactant-enhanced bioremediation in the field and partly reveals the mechanism of surfactant-enhanced bioremediation from the perspective of changes in different fractions of petroleum and microbial community dynamics.

Remediation of Lubricant Contaminated Soils by Cavitation Microjet Shock Wave Soil Washing System with Ozonation

ABSTRACT Adopting soil washing to clean up petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soils with high sand content is considered as a fast and economical method. Cavitation microjet shock wave soil washing system (CMS) enhanced by the use of ozonation was developed for remediation of aged lubricant contaminated soil in this study. Contaminated soil with total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) ranging from 1890 mg/kg to 15735 mg/kg were applicable for CMS soil washing system. The impacts of factors including initial TPH concentration hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration, soil particle size, soil washing time, and ozone treatment time onto soil washing were investigated through a 21-month period of field operation. The contaminated soils with particle size between 0.074 mm and 0.25 mm, mainly very fine sand and find sand, demonstrated 31% to 98% of TPH removal by air-injected CMS and 19% to 92% of TPH removal by CMS with ozone addition. The optimal cavitation washing time was 20 minutes. The study indicated that optimal ozone concentration in the slurry was 1.08 mg/L which require air of 27 L/min for ozone produced. However, given the short contact time in the CMS system, ozone addition in the slurry did not improve TPH removal effectively. Considering the compatible TPH removal efficiency and energy cost of ozone addition in the soil washing system, use of air-injected CMS soil washing system may be considered as an alternative way.

Enhanced bioremediation of oil-contaminated soil in a slurry bioreactor by H2O2-stimulation of oil-degrading/biosurfactant-generating bacteria: performance optimization and bacterial metagenomics.

Oil-contaminated soil is the main challenge for oil-rich countries, and this study aimed to investigate the performance of the H2O2-stimulated slurry bioreactor for the bioremediation of real oil-contaminated soil. The effect of biomass concentration, soil to water (S/W) ratio, slurry temperature, pH, and H2O2 concentration were optimized for the removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) from oil-contaminated soil. TPH removal efficiency, biosurfactants production, and peroxidase and dehydrogenase activities were measured. The optimum conditions for the complete biodegradation of 32 [Formula: see text] in the slurry bioreactor during 6days were biomass of 2250mg/L, S/W ratio of 20%, the temperature of 30°C, pH of 7, and an H2O2 concentration of 120mg/L. The highest peroxidase, dehydrogenase, surfactin, and rhamnolipid formation were also obtained under optimum conditions. The results pointed out that complete biodegradation of 32g/kg of TPH in oil-contaminated soil at a short reaction time of 6days is achievable in the developed process operated under optimum conditions. The GC/FID analysis of solid and liquid phases showed that the bioprocess completely biodegraded the different TPH fractions. H2O2 efficiently stimulated the biosurfactant-generating bacteria to produce peroxidase and thereby accelerating the bioremediation rate. Accordingly, an H2O2-mediated slurry bioreactor inoculated with biosurfactant/peroxidase-generating bacteria is a promising technique for cleaning up oil-contaminated soils.

Treatment of a synthetic decanted oily seawater in a pilot-scale hollow fiber membrane filtration process: Experimental investigation

This study investigates the performance of a pilot-scale submerged hollow fiber (HF) ultrafiltration (UF) polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane filtration system for the treatment of two different types of oily seawater (i.e., seawater contaminated with light and heavy crude oil). The effects of membrane flux and aeration flow rate on membrane performance and the removal efficiency of different fractions of hydrocarbon, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were examined. The results for both heavy and light crude oil contaminated wastewater reveal that total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal efficiency of more than 91% was achieved. This research paper determined the optimal operational parameters for an HF membrane filtration system to obtain a good TPH removal efficiency. This system can easily be upscaled and placed on a barge to treat oily wastewater generated from marine oil spills, which can significantly improve the oil spill response capacity.

Soil Remediation Using Zero-Valent Iron Nano-Particle Modified with Spondias Mombin Leaves Extract

Zero-valent iron nano-particle (nZVI) was modified with Spondias mombin (Sm) leaves extract (Sm-nZVI) for the removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), total hydrocarbon content (THC), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from contaminated soil. Advanced analytical tools such as Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR) Spectrophotometer, Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) were used to characterize the biosynthesized zero-valent iron nano-sorbent. The Fourier Transform Infra-Red analysis confirmed that the bioactive molecules such as alkaloids, polyphenols, flavonoids, etc. in Spondias mombin leaves extract were responsible for the zero-valent iron nanoparticle synthesis and stabilization. The peaks at 2 equal to 44.9o confirmed zero-valent iron (Fe0) in Sm-nZVI. The micrograph showed an average particle size ranging from 13 nm to 158 nm in Sm-nZVI revealing the micro-porosity of the sorbent. The application of Sm-nZVI for the removal of organic pollutants with varied effects of experimental parameters such as dosage, contact time and pH were successful. The result showed that the pH value for optimum removal efficiency (%) of THC (77.99%), TPH (75.61%) and PAHs (96.98) was 3.0. The adsorbent dosage for optimum removal efficiency (%) was 0.8 g for THC (79.15%), TPH (80.36%) and PAHs (97.31%) and contact time was 45 min for PAHs (97.86%) and 120 min for THC (83.98%) and TPH (85.54%). The biosynthesized zero-valent iron nano-particle showed higher removal efficiency (%) for PAHs (97.29%). This study reveals Spondias mombin zero-valent iron nano-sorbent (Sm-nZVI) as an effective and efficient sorbent for remediation of soil ladened with organic pollutants and the likes.

Effect of Feedstock Type on Biostimulation Efficiency and Microbial Community Structure during Biochar-Facilitated Remediation of Petroleum Contaminated Soil

This study investigated the effect of plant feedstock– and animal feedstock–derived biochar at 10%w/w and 15%w/w amendment levels on the biostimulation efficiency and the cultivable microbial community in the soil during biochar-facilitated remediation of petroleum contaminated soil using standard techniques. Biostimulation was most effective with the animal-based biochar (ABB) treatment while total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal was greatest in the plant-based biochar (PBB) amended soil. Observed mean TPH levels on Day 60 ranged from about 7000 mg/kg – 7800 mg/kg for the PBB and 11000 mg/kg – 14000 mg/kg for ABB representing removal levels of roughly 51.0%, 57.7%, 72.4% and 73.7% in 10% ABB, 15% ABB, 10% PBB and 15% PBB amended contaminated soils respectively. The cultivable bacterial diversity for both feedstock types shifted from the combination of Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria phyla at the onset of the study to predominantly Proteobacteria by the end of the study with a distinct reduction in diversity observed with increasing contact time. The dominant cultivable heterotrophic bacterial isolates were Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas spp. and Staphylococcus aureus for ABB and Pseudomonas spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae and Bacillus spp. for PBB. Amongst the cultivable hydrocarbon utilising bacteria obtained, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas spp. and Enterobacter spp. dominated. There were significant differences in TCHB and CHUB abundance and TPH removal efficiency between PBB and ABB amendments at 95% confidence interval. The study established that application of biochar effectively manages petroleum pollutants in soil by stimulating the proliferation and activities of relevant degradative species.

Clays play a catalytic role in pyrolytic treatment of crude-oil contaminated soils that is enhanced by ion-exchanged transition metals

Pyrolytic treatment of crude-oil contaminated soils offers great potential for rapid remediation without destroying soil fertility with lower energy requirements than incineration. Here, we show that clays impregnated with non-toxic transition metals (iron or copper) can be used as an amendment to decrease the required pyrolytic treatment temperature and time. Amending a weathered crude-oil contaminated soil with 10 % (by weight) of bentonite modified via ion-exchange with Fe or Cu, achieved 99 % removal of residual total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) at a pyrolysis temperature of 370 °C with 15-min contact time. Pyrolytic treatment of amended soils at the unprecedentedly low pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C resulted in 87 % TPH removal efficiency with Cu-bentonite and a 93 % with Fe-bentonite. We postulate that the transition metals catalyzed the pyrolysis reactions at lower onset temperatures. This hypothesis is supported by thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry, which revealed the release of hydrogen, methyl and propyl ion fragments (markers of pyrolytic degradation products of crude oil) at lower temperatures than those observed for unamended soil. Overall, this work shows proof of concept that metal-impregnated clays can enhance rapid pyro-catalytic treatment of crude-oil contaminated soils and encourages further work to understand the detailed reaction mechanisms and inform process design.

Dynamics of bacterial functional genes and community structures during rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated compost-amended soil

The objective of this study was to characterize the effects of organic soil amendment (compost) on bacterial populations associated with petroleum hydrocarbon (PH) degradation and nitrous oxide (N2O) dynamics via pot experiments. Soil was artificially contaminated with diesel oil at total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration of 30,000 mg·kg-soil−1 and compost was mixed with the contaminated soil at a 1:9 ratio (w/w). Maize seedlings were planted in each pot and a total of ten pots with two treatments (compost-amended and unamended) were prepared. The pot experiment was conducted for 85 days. The compost-amended soil had a significantly higher TPH removal efficiency (51.1%) than unamended soil (21.4%). Additionally, the relative abundance of the alkB gene, which is associated with PH degradation, was higher in the compost-amended soil than in the unamended soil. Similarly, cnorB and nosZ (which are associated with nitric oxide (NO) and N2O reduction, respectively) were also highly upregulated in the compost-amended soil. Moreover, the compost-amended soil exhibited higher richness and evenness indices, indicating that bacterial diversity was higher in the amended soil than in the unamended soil. Therefore, our findings may contribute to the development of strategies to enhance remediation efficiency and greenhouse gas mitigation during the rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated soils.

Changes in Adsorption Characteristics of Heavy Metals and Organic Pollutants Following Pyrolytic Treatment of Petroleum-Contaminated Dredged Sediment

Objectives : This study investigated the changes in adsorption characteristics of dredged sediment for heavy metals and organic pollutants after petroleum contamination followed by pyrolytic treatment.Methods : Pyrolytic treatment was conducted at two heating temperatures, 300℃ and 500℃, for 30 min using muffle furnace. Sediment spiked with No. 6 Fuel Oil at initial total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations of 5,000-50,000 mg/kg was used. Sorption experiments were conducted for heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Hg, As, Cr), phenanthrene and bisphenol A using clean sediment (sediment before the petroleum spiking) and pyrolyzed sediment.Results and Discussion : Pyrolytic treatment at 500℃ showed excellent TPH removal efficiency, resulting in the residual concentration of less than 50 mg/kg for all initial TPH contamination levels. High efficiencies (&gt; 98%) were observed for the sorptive removal of Cu, Zn and Pb in the aqueous phase for both the two sediments. The removal efficiencies of Ni and Cd from the aqueous phase using pyrolyzed sediment were 31% and 24% lower than those using clean sediment, respectively, due to the reduced oxygen-containing functional group content and specific surface area after the pyrolytic treatment. The sediment-water distribution coefficient (Kd) and sediment organic carbon-water distribution coefficient (Koc) values of bisphenol A and phenanthrene in pyrolyzed sediment were considerably higher than in clean sediment due to the high organic compound sorption affinity exhibited by carbonaceous matter that was generated during the pyrolytic sediment treatment.Conclusions : The capability of pyrolytic treatment of dredged sediment to notably improve its organic compound sorption capacity may be exploited for beneficial use of the treatment product. The product may be applied as fill and backfill, soil amendment, or in-situ sediment capping materials in highly industrialized areas where mitigation measures for organic contaminant migration are necessary.

Biodegradation of the petroleum hydrocarbons using an anoxic packed-bed biofilm reactor with in-situ biosurfactant-producing bacteria

The present study employed an anoxic packed bed biofilm reactor (AnPBR) inoculated with in-situ biosurfactant-producing bacteria for the biodegradation of petroleum wastewater. Highly acclimated biomass decreased the start-up phase period and with increasing the initial total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration from 1.5 to 4 g/L was accompanied by TPH and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies of above 99% and 96%, respectively. Decreasing hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 24 to 6 h caused an increase in the specific hydrocarbon utilization rate value from 0.45 to 1.66 gTPH/gbiomass.d. Moreover, dehydrogenase activity, surfactin, and rhamnolipid reached 31.8 μgTF/gbiomass.d, 95.1, and 27.1 mg/L, respectively. The biodegradation kinetic coefficients such as K, Ks, Kd, Y and µmax were 0.784 (d−1), 0.005 (g/L), 0.138 (d−1), 0.569 (gVSS/gCOD), and 0.446 (d−1), respectively. Dropping of bioreactor performance, especially TPH removal efficiency from 99% to 37.6% in the absence of nitrate after 10 days, indicates anoxic metabolism has been the dominant biodegradation pathway. The effluent chromatogram of gas chromatography/flame ionization detector (GC/FID) showed aliphatic, cyclic aliphatic, and aromatic hydrocarbons efficiently degraded. According to the high degradation rate of AnPBR in different operational parameters, it can be recommended for the treatment of oil-contaminated wastewater.
