Exploration of the Construction of Comprehensive Practice Top-quality Courses Based on Small-class Teaching

Course constructions: A case-base of forensic toxicology

Forensic toxicology education in China is limited by insufficient teaching methods and resources, resulting in students with adequate theoretical principles but lacking practice experience. Typical cases used as teaching materials vividly represent intoxication and provide students with an opportunity to practice and hone resolving skills. In 2013, the Department of Forensic Pathology at Zhongshan School of Medicine began to construct top-quality courses in forensic toxicology, with its first step, creating a base containing typical cases of intoxication. This essay reviews the construction process of said cases-base, which is intended to set an example of forensic toxicology education.

Lean Innovation of Course Unit Contents

Abstract Designing courses for emerging areas of study is subject to clear challenges. If the envisaged courses are directly paid by the students – as it is the case of this research – they are actually the customers whose requirements have to be satisfied. Traditional approaches for collecting student requirements are not feasible for building up very novel topics. For such cases, an approach for course unit design that respects the lean philosophy is introduced in this paper. Lean is about creation of more value for students with fewer resources; or maximizing value while minimizing waste. The approach is based on the paradigm that, in highly dynamic and strong competitive educational markets, top quality courses must be designed from the very early stages. A hypothesis-based process defines the “content-prototype” of the course, which is further tested via web-based surveys that are directed to potential students. Results are statistically interpreted and a refined course content is formulated. The prototype for the most delicate module of the course is elaborated to test the level of delight of potential students (also called the WOW effect). Lessons learned are then considered to design the “promoter-prototype” of the course. A focus group is then used to test if potential students will feel a special experience interacting with the course content (also known as the KANDO effect). The methodology was experimented to design a master course unit on digital entrepreneurship. Empirical researches reveal the viability of the methodology to extract the appropriate topics of a course in emerging areas of study. Researches also show that a well-piloted strategy for course delivery should be in place to achieve the desired market impact.

Exploration and implementation for the construction of the quaternary teaching system of medical genetics including teaching, practice, research and clinical application.

Medical genetics, the connection between basic and clinical medicine, is a subject with strong applicability and plays important role in modern medical education system. Based on years of teaching experience and during the construction of state-level top quality course, our teaching team has established the quaternary teaching system of medical genetics which includes teaching, practice, research and clinical application. The four elements of the system interpenetrate, complement and reinforce each other. Specifically, classroom teaching is the basics which is further complemented by social practice, improved by research and promoted by clinical application. The quaternary teaching system provides a feasible way to integrate theoretical and clinical courses. After years of implementation, the teaching system has got great effects on the obvious improvement of research ability, social reputation and clinical service capacities of the research team.

Extended student quality improvement programs of Xiamen University.

This paper describes the recent educational activities and programs organized by the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) Xiamen University Student Club. The educational programs covered the undergraduate student mentoring program, seminar series, the top-quality course project, and student scientific projects and contests. These activities have successfully cultivated our students strong interests in the field of biomedical engineering, and also trained our students the skills of solving real-world problems and experience of teamwork collaborations. Our initiatives provide a good example of well-organized education practice for IEEE EMBS student organizations.

Status and Trend of Research on Top-Quality Course in Vocational College Based on Network

Construction of higher vocational college course is one of the important measures of improving higher vocational education quality. It will help to find problems and deficiencies that we analysis the status and level of study on top-quality courses of vocational college, which can provide the theoretical basis to courses in the future. This study analyzes and counts the paper, which be published in domestic journals between 2005 and 2010, with content analysis method. The study found that the number of research papers on excellent courses of vocational colleges had been increased over the past six years, but the theoretical study was not in-depth, researchers and theoretical levels should be improved; research method needs to be diversified; the scope of the study should be balanced.
