The influence of Turkish literary schools on Piramerd

Piramerd is considered one of the prominent and distinguished figures of the first half of Kurdish literature, journalism, and as a social reformer and nationalist intellectual in Southern Kurdistan. He was a multi-talented and prolific personality. Therefore, studying Piramerd's world cannot be completed in just a few books. Perhaps in literary and journalistic studies, more attention has been paid to his role and influence in journalism and the renewal of Kurdish literature, but in this research, we have focused on the Turkish literary trends of Piramerd's time when he lived in Turkey, his relationships with Turkish writers, and the influence of their works in enriching his literary experience, as well as the importance of benefiting from new Western literary genres and the significance of translation in enriching national literature, text language, and new perspectives on world literature. These literary trends helped him take steps toward modernization after his return, both in form and appearance, and in terms of content, to think about changes in the structure of Kurdish poetry. Therefore, when discussing modernization, Piramerd is directly considered one of the pioneers of the renewal of Kurdish poetry and literature. During Piramerd's time in Turkey, there were three prevalent literary trends: the Islamic-nationalist trend, the national culture and language trend, and finally the modernist trend and turn toward Western literature and European modernist movements, which largely renewed Turkish national literature under the light of Romanticism.

Prevalence of Colistin-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolates in Turkey over a 20-Year Period: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the leading causes of healthcare-associated infections and poses challenges in its treatment owing to its high antibiotic resistance. The development of resistance to colistin, which is used as a last resort, has become a major public health problem worldwide. This study was planned according to the PRISMA guidelines and included studies reporting the prevalence of colistin-resistant K. pneumoniae in Turkey between 2004 and 2024 through a systematic literature review. A total of 28 original research articles were included in the meta-analysis. Data were analyzed using the SPSS and CMA software. The pooled colistin resistance of a total of 8916 K. pneumoniae strains from 28 studies included in this meta-analysis was found to be 1.63% (95% CI: 1.51-3.12). Colistin resistance increased significantly over time. A higher resistance rate was detected in the strains tested using the EUCAST guidelines and broth microdilution method. The year of the study and validation methods contributed to the heterogeneity observed in the studies. This meta-analysis reveals that colistin-resistant K. pneumoniae strains have increased over time in Turkey. Current data show that colistin resistance is not only a laboratory finding but has become a crisis, requiring urgent action in terms of hospital infection management and patient safety. Regional and global measures should be taken to ensure the appropriate use of antibiotics to control the development of resistance.

Investigation of the Correlation Between ELISA and Serum Amyloid A in the Diagnosis of Bordetella bronchiseptica in Dogs.

Bordetella bronchiseptica is an essential bacterial pathogen characterized by chronic respiratory disease in dogs known as Kennel cough. The presence of causative antibodies in animals can also be detected by lipopolysaccharide antigen-based enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In recent years, it has been determined that there is a significant relationship between acute phase proteins and diseases, and disease follow-up can be done within the framework of this relationship. In this study, blood sera from 150 dogs in an animal shelter in Van province were evaluated for B. bronchiseptica by the homemade ELISA method, and their correlations with serum amyloid A (SAA) were investigated. Blood serum samples were analysed for antibodies against B. bronchiseptica using a homemade ELISA method. Positive animals were also molecularly confirmed using nasal swabs by PCR. A commercial ELISA kit determined SAA levels in blood sera. Eighteen (12%) of the analysed blood serum samples were found positive by the homemade ELISA method. SAA concentrations in the positive blood sera were elevated from 12.7 to ≤38.98mg/L. SAA concentrations in blood sera serologically positive for B. bronchiseptica were statistically significant. In this study, in which the relationship between SAA concentration and B. bronchiseptica was investigated for the first time in Turkey, it was concluded that SAA concentration analysis may help diagnose and monitor the disease. In addition, the presence and prevalence of this critical and zoonotic agent causing chronic respiratory tract disease in dogs in Van province was revealed for the first time in this study.

The Reception History of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu as a Celebrity Female Traveler

Abstract Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's legacy as a celebrated female traveler offers a compelling case study for understanding how critics and readers sought to make sense of a woman's exceptional mobility. Her letters, written during her time in Turkey and Italy, were highly sought after and widely circulated among the British reading public in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The reception history of Montagu's travel letters reveals an underlying anxiety in British society concerning the expanding range of female mobility, as the meaning of her travels was continuously reevaluated and reconstructed within evolving historical contexts. In this article, I draw upon a comprehensive range of cultural evidence—including published periodical reviews, the reactions of contemporaries such as Horace Walpole and Lady Oxford, frontispiece illustrations, and later editions of her works—to analyze the shifting perceptions of Montagu's travels. This survey indicates that Montagu's extraordinary career as a lifelong traveler was frequently repurposed and remodeled, reflecting the diverse needs and desires of readers, reviewers, and editors over time. Ultimately, this article demonstrates the extent to which Montagu's travels challenged negative perceptions of female travelers and contributed to paving the way for future women adventurers.

Production of Worsted Woven Fabric with Local-National Merino Wool in Turkey and Its Transformation into Suit Jackets after Performance Tests: An Adventure from Sheep to Jacket

The aim of this study is to convert the fleeces obtained after 1 year of maintenance of the Karacabey (Turkish) Merino fleece-oriented starter flock of Turkey, which was established in Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Faculty of Agriculture Education Research and Application Farm, into worsted yarn and then woven fabric for the first time in Turkey after wool washing. Thus, it is aimed to show that the same worsted men's suit woven fabrics normally produced with Australian merino wool can be produced with Turkish merino. The structural, mechanical, handle and comfort properties of the produced fabric after dyeing-finishing processes were compared with the fabric produced with Australian merino by taking the fabric produced with Australian merino as reference. In the performance tests conducted, it was determined that the fabric produced with local-national wool showed similar quality performance properties to the fabric produced with Australian merino and the first men's suit jacket production was achieved from this fabric obtained from our local wool.

Morphological and genetic characterization of Contracaecum and Porrocaecum species from the wild birds in Turkey.

The superfamily Ascaridoidea are parasitic nematodes in vertebrates, including birds and humans. In order to investigate the presence and distribution of these parasitic nematodes in birds acting as the definitive host, 157 birds of 64 bird species belonging to 16 orders were collected and necropsied in the Kızılırmak Delta area in the Bafra district of Samsun province. The parasites collected were fixed in 70% ethyl alcohol and identified under a light microscope, and morphologically important regions were photographed for identification. The parasitological examination determined morphologically that Ardea purpurea was infected with Contracaecum rudolphii; Accipiter nisus, Buteo buteo, and B. rufinus with Porrocaecum angusticolle; Aythya ferina with P. crassum; Egretta garzetta with P. depressum; and Turdus merula with P. ensicaudatum. ITS-1 gene region was preferred for molecular analyses of all identified species, and morphological findings were confirmed. C. rudolphii, P. depressum, and P. ensicaudatum were described molecularly for the first time in Turkey, while P. angusticolle and P. crassum were described both molecularly and morphologically.

Molecular survey and phylogenetic analysis of bee pathogens; with a note first detection of Apis mellifera Filamentous Virus, Varroa destructor virus-1, Apis rhabdovirus-1, and Apis rhabdovirus-2 in Türkiye

Turkey is one of the most important bee centers in the world, but there is limited information about honey bee pathogens in the country. This study aimed to investigate bee pathogens using microscopic and molecular techniques (PCR, RT-PCR, nested-PCR, and sequencing) in Sivas province, the second-biggest beekeeping center in Turkey. For this purpose, bee samples were obtained from 149 bee colonies belonging to 74 local beekeepers in eight districts of the Sivas province. The bee samples were examined for pathogens, and at least one pathogen was detected in 148 bee colonies. In this study, a single infection was determined in 26.17% (39/149) of the bee samples, while the prevalence of co-infection was 73.15% (109/149). Nosema ceranae, Varroa destructor haplotype-K, Apis mellifera Filamentous Virus, Deformed wing virus, Varroa destructor virus-1, Lake Sinai virus-2, Apis rhabdovirus-1, and Apis rhabdovirus-2 were detected. Apis mellifera Filamentous Virus, Varroa destructor virus-1, Apis rhabdovirus-1, and Apis rhabdovirus-2 were found for the first time in Turkey with the current study. Furthermore, nucleotide sequence analysis and phylogeny relationships of bee pathogens obtained from samples were done, and sequences were deposited to GenBank. This study provides molecular data on the presence and prevalence of important bee pathogens in the region. As the prevalence of many pathogens has been determined, especially the existence of viral new species has been revealed, the effects of the species on beekeeping should be studied, and beekeepers should take effective control measures to reduce the effects of these pathogens.

V.V. Bartold’s Research Visit to Turkey in 1926 on the Pages of His Constantinople Diary

Based on new archival materials, the paper briefly highlights the history of V.V. Bartold’s research visit to Turkey in 1926, particularly, its preparation, reasons, and goals. It is shown that the invitation was made by the Turkish government and supported by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and by the People’s Commissariat for Foreign Affairs. Bartold mostly spent his time in Turkey preparing a series of lectures on the history of Central Asian peoples at the request of the Turkish side, and studying Oriental manuscripts in Istanbul libraries. Besides, he was busy carrying out the mission entrusted to him by the Academy of Sciences, to establish academic contacts with Turkish researchers. The period of Bartold’s stay in Constantinople (Istanbul) from January 2 to February 17, was reflected in his small diary. In daily entries, the Academician thoroughly recorded events, meetings with Turkish and European researchers, made brief notes about manuscripts and libraries. He also noted his impressions of scientific institutions and changes in the cultural space of the former Ottoman capital. The research visit of the renowned orientalist Academician V.V. Bartold to Turkey was an important contribution to strengthening scholarly contacts between Russian and Turkish researchers. The part of the diary from January 2 to January 14, 1926, in which Bartold describes the first two weeks of his stay in Constantinople, is published as an appendix.

Gut microbiota and relevant abundances of<i> Prevotella copri, Lachnospiraceae, Collinsella, Helicobacter cinaedi, Desulfovibrio</i>, and <i>Escherichia coli</i> among cats with <i>Pemphigus foliaceus</i>

The cat gut-inhabitant conjoint microbiota is a peculiar ecosystem in relationship with several bodily functions and immunity. Gut microbiota dysbiosis could participate within autoimmune disease pathogenesis, whereas its niche, whether causative or influencing role regarding systemic immunity in autoimmune diseases, remains fugitive. The purpose of the present study was to identify gut microbiota alterations and probable mechanisms that participated in the development of Pemphigus foliaceus for a better understanding of future effective therapeutical armamentarium based on gut microbiota. In the present article, the authors investigated gut microbiota alterations to those of eight cats diagnosed with Pemphigus foliaceus. Furthermore, the study thoroughly analyzed pathogenic bacteria species as triggers of autoimmunity. The diagnostic algorithm involved two distinct sides: i) on referral with the first criteria was proof of evidence for possible autoimmunity, and ii) Pemphigus foliaceus diagnosis with relevant analytes. A total of eight cats were enrolled, and gut microbiomes were detected by the use of the MIDOG All-in-One Microbial Test targeting Next-Generation DNA Sequencing. By this methodology, we analyzed the dysbiosis network for bacterial kingdoms and determined the relationship between disease activity related to Pemphigus foliaceus and gut microbiota. The data showed increasing abundances of Collinsella, Lachnospiroceae, and Escherichia coli and decreasing Desulfovibrio piger, Prevotella copri, and Helicobacter cianedi among cats with pemphigus foliaceus. For the first time in Turkey, the gut microbiota of cats with pemphigus foliaceus were detected, the results of which could be cautiously taken into consideration for novel and effective therapeutical approaches.

Mutations associated with boscalid and pyraclostrobin resistance of Botrytis cinerea from vegetable fields in Turkey

Botrytis cinerea Pers. is a polyphagous fungal pathogen that can cause significant damage in the field, warehouse, and greenhouse conditions. In Turkey, fungicides with site-specific modes containing the active ingredients boscalid and pyraclostrobin are used to control B. cinerea. In this study, it was aimed to determine the mutations associated with resistance to boscalid and pyraclostrobin active substances in B. cinerea isolates obtained from tomato, pepper, eggplant, and lettuce in Turkey. In the in vitro bioassay, a conidial germination test was performed. It was determined that 26% of the isolates used in the bioassay test were resistant. After that, mutations associated with resistance were investigated. Mutations associated with boscalid resistance were found in 18 isolates whose SdhB gene was sequenced. No mutations were detected in sensitive MH51 and Ant34 isolates. It has been determined that N230I and H272R mutations were found to be frequent in B. cinerea populations in Turkey. P225F mutation was detected only in the B4 isolate obtained from the pepper in Antalya. The mutations associated with boscalid resistance detected in this study are reported for the first time in Turkey. The G143A mutation associated with pyraclostrobin resistance was detected in all the isolates sequenced.

Managing Uncertain Times in Turkey: Refugee Healthcare Research during a Global Pandemic

When I entered graduate school in September 2016, Turkey was mired in a series of successive crises. I had spent the first half of the year living in Istanbul, writing about the country's reception of Syrian refugees as a journalist and researcher. During that stretch, a series of suicide bombings and, in my last week in the country, an attempted coup, were formative for the way I made sense of future fieldwork in Turkey. I surmised that it would be wrought with unpredictability. My research interest in Syrian refugees’ access to Turkey's state services was itself marked by uncertainty. This uncertainty was tied to the nature of Syrians’ explicitly temporary legal status within Turkey and the broader domestic and geopolitical context that shaped the contours of Turkey's refugee policy. Given these layers of unpredictability both endogenous and exogenous to my research interest, I planned to design my research with uncertainty as an analytical focus.

Sequence and Haplotype Analyses of Ligula intestinalis in Acanthobrama marmid (Cyprinidae) in Turkey

PurposeLigulosis caused by Ligula intestinalis adversely affects the fisheries carried out in the lakes and ponds, causing economic losses in the fish industry. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the molecular characterization of L. intestinalis isolates obtained from woodfish (Acanthobrama marmid) in Keban Dam Lake in Elazig province of Turkey by using mt-CO1 gene sequences and to determine the genetic differences and haplotypes between the isolates.MethodsIn the examination made in terms of L. intestinalis, the intestine of the fish was opened with the help of fine-tipped scissors, the contents were allowed to come out, and the parasites were taken into a petri dish containing phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Then, L. intestinalis plerocercoids were taken into 15 ml falcon tubes containing 70% ethanol and stored at − 20 °C until further analysis. From each isolate, total gDNA was extracted from the plerocercoids. A partial (480 bp) mt-CO1 gene was amplified by PCR and sequenced unidirectionally. The final size of the trimmed sequences was 392 bp for 43 sequences. Sequence and haplotype analyses were performed, followed by phylogenetic analyses.ResultsAll isolates were confirmed as L. intestinalis by BLAST analysis. In addition, 87 nucleotide mutation positions were determined among 43 CO1 gene sequences. As a result of the haplotype network performed for the mt-CO1 gene region of L. intestinalis isolates; arranged in a star-like configuration with the main haplotype (Hap05), separated from other haplotypes by 1–6 mutation steps, and 29 haplotypes were identified, covering 13.9% (6/43) of the total isolates. Also, 75 variable (polymorphic) sites were determined, 52 of which were parsimony informative sites.ConclusionsThe molecular characterization of L. intestinalis in woodfish (A. marmid) was identified for the first time in Turkey.

European endemic Ptychostomum minii (Bryaceae, Bryophyta) - new to Turkey and its significant range extention to SW Asia

In this study, Ptychostomum minii, a European endemic species is recorded for the first time in Turkey and Southwest Asia. The species was found in the Bolkar Mountains in Turkey. Insights into recent discoveries, along with accompanying photographs, ecology, and location specifics in Turkey are presented.

Development of a New Generation High Crushing Capacity Jaw Crusher with an Automatically Adjusted Closed Side Settings

The design and development of a new generation high crushing capacity jaw crusher, developed for the first time in Turkey and whose Closed Side Settings (CSS) may be automatically adjusted hydraulically, were investigated in this study. The calculations for the crusher developed for this purpose were included in the paper. The design modifications made to expand the crusher's jaw stroke from 27 mm to 40 mm were documented, and the capacity increase resulting from this was theoretically calculated and proven by a wide range of field tests conducted after the jaw crusher was manufactured. Field testing and their findings were also thoroughly covered in the paper. The forces on the crusher jaw and bearings, the crusher body geometry and crusher material (via fatigue analysis), and the dynamic performance of the system (via vibration analysis of the carrier system) were examined as the outcome of the FEM (Finite Element Method) and DEM (Discrete Element Method) analyses performed after the theoretical calculations. With improvements made based on the findings gained, the theoretical and practical harmony of the created jaw crusher system was realized. Field testing has proven that the adjustment procedure takes no more than 3 minutes and requires no human participation. As a result of this research, a patent application for the created automation algorithm was filed.

Young Labour Force and Labour Market Alignment in A Developing Economy: Turkey TRB2 Region Survey

The aim of this study is to discover the root causes of the labor market adjustment problem, which has not been resolved for a long time in Turkey, on the most fundamental basis and by observing in the least developed region. The study is based on data obtained from qualitative and quantitative field studies that lasted approximately nine months as part of a research project supported by the Eastern Anatolia Development Agency (DAKA). According to the results, social skills deficiencies have been identified among the causes of labor market conflicts and vocational skill deficiencies in regions with low socio-economic development. Contrary to most studies on education-employment fit, the results of this study show that central education remains a habit for the labor market parties but does not meet the expectations of both parties.

Molecular Characterization and Zoonotic Significance of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis in Asymptomatic Adult Stray Cats and Dogs in Turkey

Background: Cryptosporidium species and Giardia duodenalis are important protozoan parasites due to their wide host range and potential as zoonotic diseases. These parasites, responsible for Cryptosporidiosis and Giardiasis, are significant health concerns and have garnered attention from both the public and veterinary fields. Pets, such as dogs and cats, are susceptible to these infections and play a crucial role in transmitting these protozoans to humans. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence, species, genotypes and zoonotic significance of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in asymptomatic adult stray cats and dogs. Methods: Fecal samples from 75 adult stray animal, 42 dogs and 33 cats, were collected in Diyarbakýr city, southeastern Anatolia, Turkey. Direct immunofluorescence test was used to confirm the presence of G. duoenalis cysts and cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in collected fecal samples. Microscopic analysis was used to count the number of cysts/oocysts per gram as specified by the manufacturer. Molecular confirmation was done with Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using Giardia SSU-rDNA and Cryptosporidium spp. SSU rRNA gene. The secondary PCR products of all positive samples were sequenced in one directions on an automated sequencer. Nucleotide sequence analysis was performed by BLAST alignment using the National Center for Biotechnology Information database. Result: The prevalence of Cryptosporidium was 7.14% in 42 cats and 9.09% in 33 dogs. The prevalence of G. duodenalis was 23.80% in cats and 54.54% in dogs. The average number of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts per gram of cat and dog feces was 1866.3 and 1813.3, respectively. The average number of G. duodenalis cysts per gram of cat and dog feces was 1011.6 and 4786, respectively. All Cryptosporidium isolates were determined as C. canis in dogs and C. felis in cats. C. canis and C. felis isolates identified in the study, MT329018.1 and MN696800.1, AF159113.1 and KM977642.1 showed similarity with Genbank number, respectively. Assemblages A, E, C, D were found in dogs and assemblages A and E in cats in the result of the sequence of 130 bp gene fragments obtained from G. duodenalis isolates. This study sequence analysis of G. duodenalis cat isolates identified assemblages A (50%/10) and E (50%/10). In this study, assemblage E was the most common genotype isolated in dogs (38.8%), followed by Assemblage C (27.7%), Assemblage D (16.6%) and Assemblage A (15.5%). Assemblage A, which has zoonotic importance, was detected in cats and dogs, while assemblage E in cats and dogs was reported for the first time in Turkey.

Investigation of genetic relatedness, antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, biofilm-related virulence genes and integron-related genes of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates obtained from bovine milk samples with mastitis

Treatment of infections caused by opportunistic pathogenic Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is complicated by the bacterium's ability to produce biofilms and high antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of genetic relatedness, antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, biofilm genes associated with virulence and integron genes among isolates of S. maltophilia recovered from bovine milk with subclinical mastitis. In this study, bacterial identification was performed using conventional methods. While using the smeT gene-based Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to confirm the species-level identification of isolates; PCR was also used to detect virulence and integron genes, too. The quantitative Microplate Test (MP) method was used to determine the phenotypic biofilm production capacity of the isolates. The resistance patterns of the isolates against 9 antibiotics belonging to 9 antimicrobial families were examined using the disk diffusion method. Isolates resistant to at least three drug classes from various antimicrobial drug classes were defined as multi-drug resistant (MDR). The genetic linkage of S. maltophilia isolates was investigated by Enterobacterial Repetitive Intragenic Consensus (ERIC) PCR. The Chi-Square (χ2) test was used to compare the relationship between the biofilm-forming capacity of the isolates with the prevalence of biofilm-associated virulence genes and integron genes with MDR. In the study, a total of 312 milk samples with subclinical mastitis were taken from 27 farms. Ten isolates from five farms were phenotypically and genotypically identified as S. maltophilia. All isolates were resistant to cefepime and imipenem. While 70% of the isolates were MDR; 80% carried one of the integron genes. By the MP test, the phenotypically biofilm-forming capacity identified in isolates was detected at 80%. The prevalence of the studied virulence genes was rpfF 60%, rmlA 70%, spgM and smf1 80%. There was no significant relationship between the biofilm-forming capacity of the isolates with the prevalence of biofilm-associated virulence genes and MDR with integron genes. S. maltophilia isolates were detected simply and quickly, using PCR based on the smeT gene, from bovine milk samples for the first time in Turkey. In the UPGMA analysis performed in the PyElph 1.4 program, a total of 5 genotypes were found, 2 single and 3 multiple according to 18% similarity coefficient. ERIC-PCR can be useful in identifying S. maltophilia isolates with epidemic potential.

Descriptions of some caligonellid and stigmaeid mites (Acariformes: Raphignathoidea) from Manisa province, Türkiye

A new species viz. Molothrognathus acus sp. nov., collected from litter and soil under Pinus brutia (Pinaceae), Molothrognathus tauricus Khaustov, 2021 is recorded for the first time in Turkey and the unknown male of Prostigmaeus amplius Doğan et al., 2020, collected from litter and soil under Olea europaea (Oleaceae) in Manisa province, Türkiye, is described and illustrated. A key to the species of Molothrognathus from Türkiye is provided.

UTILISING GIS FOR DOCUMENTATION, CONSERVATION, AND SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY CAMPUS IN ANKARA AS A MODERN PERIOD LIVING HERITAGE PLACE

Abstract. The Middle East Technical University (METU) Ankara Campus is one of the earliest and most prominent modern-period university campuses that resulted from an architectural competition in the 1960s in Turkey. However, METU Campus, as a modern-era heritage place, faces various threats, including pressure for new urban development. In addition, the increasing number of students and contemporary educational needs require changes in the physical infrastructure and campus settings. Thus, all these threaten the tangible and intangible values of the Campus. In this regard, conserving the METU Campus requires a multidimensional approach that considers a wide range of values and problems; herein, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) becomes a useful tool for dealing with this complex work. Accordingly, the METU Campus GIS Project [METU_GIS] was developed to document and understand the multidimensional characteristics of the METU Campus, assess its values, and propose solutions to current issues while considering its values and potentials. Accordingly, the METU_GIS defines conservation policies and strategies that ensure the conservation and sustainability of the Campus as a living modern heritage place. Furthermore, the METU_GIS is a GIS-based conservation management plan created for a modern period campus for the first time in Turkey. Hence, it became an essential basis and a tool for conserving and managing the METU Campus as a modern living heritage place.
