Adaptive Particle Swarm Algorithm for Parameters Tuning of Fractional Order PID Controller

In order to optimize the parameters of fractional order PID controller of complex system, an adaptive particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is proposed to realize the parameters adjustment. In this algorithm, the tuning particle population is divided into three subgroups firstly, and through introducing the swarm-aggregation degree factor and the evolution speed factor of particle, dynamically adjusting the inertia weight and size of subgroups respectively, setting to find optimal objective according to the time-domain performance index of the system, and then the controller parameter tuning is realized by iterative calculation. Finally, adaptive particle swarm optimization method of fractional order PID controller is applied to integer order and fractional order of the controlled system for performance simulation in time domain analysis. The experimental results show that the proposed method could improve the performance of the control system and has strong anti-interference ability.

Optimal Power System Stabilizers design via Cuckoo Search algorithm

Abstract Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm is introduced in this paper for optimal Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) design in a multimachine power system. The PSSs parameter tuning problem is formulated as an optimization problem which is solved by CS Algorithm. An eigenvalues based objective function involving the damping ratio, and the damping factor of the lightly damped electromechanical modes is considered for the PSSs design problem. The performance of the proposed CS based PSSs (CSPSS) has been compared with Genetic Algorithm (GA) based PSSs (GAPSS) and the Conventional PSSs (CPSS) under different operating conditions and disturbances. The results of the developed CSPSS are verified through time domain analysis, eigenvalues and performance indices. Also, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in providing good damping characteristics is confirmed.

A new technique of designing a robust PID and Polynomial controller for DC motor speed control is proposed. The proposed approach poses the design problem as fixed structure robust controller and mixed sensitivity H∞ method. Performance weights are designed based on the closed-loop objective and performance requirements which are normally applied in H∞ optimal control. Further Genetic Algorithm (GA) is adopted to solve the optimization problem for finding the optimal controller by selection of PID and polynomial parameters. Usually in literature, comparison has been carried out based on time domain performance indices; whereas, in this work, mixed sensitivity H∞ method is considered as the fitness function for the GA techniques in order to assess the robustness of the designed system. Also, comparison of fixed structure PID and Polynomial controller is done for DC motor speed control. The proposed technique can solve the problem of complicated and high order controller of conventional H∞ optimal control for practical use.

Optimal Tuning of Multimachine Power System Stabilizer using Cuckoo Search Algorithm

In this paper, optimal multiobjective design of robust multimachine Power System Stabilizers (PSS) using Cuckoo Search (CS) optimization algorithm is presented for small-signal stability enhancement. This algorithm is based on the obligate brood parasitic behaviour of some cuckoo species in combination with Lévy flight behaviour of some birds and fruit flies. A conventional speed-based lead-lag PSS is used in this work. The parameters of the Cuckoo Search based Power System Stabilizer (CSPSS) are optimized simultaneously to shift the unstable or poorly damped electromechanical mode eigenvalues of all operating conditions to a D-shape zone in the left half of the s-plane. A multiobjective eigenvalue based objective function is designed to optimize a problem involving the damping factor and damping ratio of the electromechanical modes. To show the effectiveness and the robustness of CSPSS, time domain simulations, eigenvalue analysis and performance indices are presented and compared with Genetic Algorithm based PSSs (GAPSS) and Particle Swarm Optimization based PSO (PSOPSS) under wide range of operating conditions and severe disturbances. It is observed that CSPSS exhibits improved damping performance compare to GAPSS and PSOPSS.

Design, Analysis and Performance Evaluation of Fractional Order Proportional Integral for Three Interacting Tank Process in Frequency Domain considered as Third Order System

Conventional Integer order Proportional Integral Derivative (IOPID) are the workhorse for the control of almost 90% of the Industrial processes due to its structural simplicity. With the application of fractional calculus in the field of control engineering, Fractional Order (FO) PID controllers are gaining popularity since it requires a slight modification of the integer order PID controller. Tuning of the Integer Order PID controller parameters are by well known techniques like Ziegler Nichols method, Cohen Coon Method, etc mostly time domain based and few frequency techniques are also available. In the present research work, an attempt has been made to tune the FOPI controller using Frequency domain specifications. Frequency domain specifications considered for the design includes the Phase Margin specification, Gain crossover frequency specification and robustness to gain variations. The proposed control schemes are applied to three interacting tank process represented as third order system and verified under servo, regulatory, servo-regulatory response and robustness conditions. Comparison of the time domain performance indices are performed to guarantee the superiority of the proposed scheme.

Optimal fractional order PID controller for automatic generation control of two-area power systems

This paper proposes a fractional order PID (FOPID) controller for the supplementary automatic generation control (AGC) of two area thermal power systems. To establish the effectiveness of the proposed controller, its dynamic performance is compared with integral/PI controllers. The parameters of the PI controllers are determined using genetic algorithm (GA) and fuzzy logic-based approaches. These comparisons are performed in terms of two time domain performance indices viz., settling time and maximum overshoot/undershoot of the dynamic response and three error indices, viz., Integral of Time multiplied Absolute Error (ITAE), Integral of the Absolute Error (IAE) and Integral of the square error (ISE). Design of Fractional Order PID controller for dc motor using Genetic Algorithm

Design of fractional order PID (FOPID) controller for DC motor is proposed in this paper. A FOPID (PI λ D μ ) is a PID controller whose derivative and integral orders are fractional numbers rather than integers. Design stage of such controller consists of determining six parameters – proportional constant (K p ), integral constant (K i ), derivative constant (K d ), filter time constant (τ d ), integral order (λ) and derivative order (μ). The proposed approach poses the problem as designing a DC motor speed controller on the concept of fixed structure robust controller and mixed sensitivity H ∞ method. The uncertainty caused by the parameter changes of motor resistance, motor inductance and load are formulated as multiplicative uncertainty weight, which are used in the objective function in the design. Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Simulated Annealing (SA) are employed to carry out the aforementioned design procedure. Comparisons are made with a PID with derivative first order filter controller and it is shown that the proposed FOPID controller can highly improve the system robustness with respect to model uncertainties. Optimization of Power System Stabilizers using BAT search algorithm

A new metaheuristic method, the BAT search algorithm based on the echolocation behavior of bats is proposed in this paper for optimal design of Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) in a multimachine environment. The PSSs parameter tuning problem is converted to an optimization problem which is solved by BAT search algorithm. An eigenvalues based objective function involving the damping factor, and the damping ratio of the lightly damped electromechanical modes is considered for the PSSs design problem. The performance of the proposed BAT based PSSs (BATPSS) has been compared with Genetic Algorithm (GA) based PSSs (GAPSS) and the Conventional PSSs (CPSS) under various operating conditions and disturbances. The results of the proposed BATPSS are demonstrated through time domain analysis, eigenvalues and performance indices. Moreover, the results are presented to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed algorithm over the GA and conventional one.

Real Time Implementation of Third Generation CRONE Control Strategy for DC Motor Speed Control System

This work focuses on real time implementation of third generation CRONE control strategy for the speed control of DC motor. The dynamic second order transfer function model is analytically derived for the speed control system based on real time data. An attempt has been made to compare third generation CRONE controller with Fractional order (FO) PIλ controller. The real time run of both the controller results are recorded and reported in time domain and integral time performance indices. The real time result shows that the third generation CRONE controller may be more effective and gives superior performance over the FO PIλ controller

Effects of PID Controller Location in the System Loop of Mobile Satellite Dish Network

effects of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) position controller location within the structure of network of mobile satellite dish spread all over Nigeria on system performance were investigated. The region of acceptable stability for the system was graphically determined in the integral gain, Ki - derivative gain, Kd plane for the determined value of proportional gain, Kp. Values for Ki and Kd were determined within the stability region. The determined values of Kp , Ki and Kd were slotted into the PID controller transfer function. The resulting controller was then connected to the system as series compensation and feedback compensation respectively. After putting together the composite system transfer function for uncompensated, series compensated and feedback compensated systems, they were then subjected to a step input forcing function, which yielded time domain performance indices for these systems using MATLAB as a simulation tool. The obtained time domain performance indices for the uncompensated system, series compensated system and feedback compensated system show that the series compensated system has superior performance followed by uncompensated system and the feedback compensated system has the worst performance indices.

Comparative Analysis of Genetic Algorithm and Fuzzy Logic Based Automatic Generation Control of Multi Area Power Systems

This paper illustrates the application of fuzzy logic FL) to automatic generation control (AGC) of a two area thermal power system and compares its performance with genetic algorithm (GA) based PI controller. The PI controller parameters are redesigned by the application of fuzzy logic. To verify the performance of the fuzzy based AGC, the task of tuning PI parameters is reformulated as an optimization problem for the application of GA. A comparison between the proposed fuzzy logic and GA based controllers, in terms of three time domain performance indices are presented.

A COMPARISON OF INVERTER CURRENT CONTROL AND RECTIFIER CURRENT CONTROL FOR HVDC SYSTEMS

This article presents a comparison between traditional rectifier current control and a proposed inverter current control for HVDC systems, considering both dynamic and functional steady-state aspects. The analytical system model, implemented in MATLAB, is used for the eigenvalue analysis and studies -based on the time domain performance index. It is shown that inverter current control has noticeable dynamic benefits, particularly for long cable DC systems and for weak inverter AC system configurations. Conventional rectifier current control is superior only with systems having very weak rectifier AC systems. Mode transition analysis fully confirms functionality of the inverter current control method but it also reveals particular new phenomena. A PSCAD simulation study with CIGRE benchmark model supplements salient results in this work.

Evaluation of Fin Roll Stabiliser Controller Design

The control of ship roll motion using fins or rudders has been extensively studied in the last decade. Many different control design techniques have been investigated but very few have found application in practice. The majority of fin stabilisation control systems are still based on PID controllers. The objective of this paper is to identify the benefits of advanced control design techniques and possible advantages, which they might have over their classical counterparts. Three control design techniques namely, classical PID, optimised PID and H∞ controllers are compared and frequency and time domain performance indices are calculated to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Dynamic output compensation between selected channels in power systems. Part 1. The framework

This paper presents a dynamic compensation framework for the design of a set of low order dynamic MISO controllers between selected input and output channels at each control site, or control agent, in power systems. The first step is to pick the best set of available measurements to feed in individual controllers at each control agent. The choice of measurements is made in conjunction with the control objectives in multiple time scales focusing on selected system modes. The measurements serve as controller inputs and are used for characterizing the system with low order models whose transfer matrices are good approximations of the full system. This step involves Hankel singular values analysis and balanced system representations. The second step is to design the controls. Two approaches are described. The idea of one method is to mimic the relevant dynamics of linear state feedback with a controller that takes into account structural constraints by separately designing each control input based on the best measurements available at each agent. Instead of retaining modes and mode shapes, as with projective control, this design method approximates the controller optimizing a time-domain performance index. While not as systematic as H ∞ design or as optimization techniques, the approach yields practical designs, superior to state feedback and projective control in terms of robustness. Furthermore, iterative μ-synthesis can be used as an alternate design if robustness is not sufficient. In Part 2 of the paper, examples are carried out. Measurements selection, agent model building, and application of robust control, of projective control and dynamic compensation in the design framework presented in Part 1 are illustrated.
