A new technique for generating extremely small time-delay steps as a function of wavelength is presented. The fiber unit comprises overwritten gratings at different Bragg wavelengths with varying coupling coefficients, and hence varying effective reflection points. The shortest delay step demonstrated was 2 ps, which can generate the small time-delay increments required in high-resolution beamformers for microwave phased arrays. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
