Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm) microgel-based etalons exhibit visual color, and can be fabricated by sandwiching a monolithic microgel layer between two thin metal layers (typically Au). The color of the devices is a direct result of the device structure, and can be dynamically tuned by varying the thickness of the microgel layer in response to external stimuli. For many applications, the robustness of the etalon's structure, the spatial uniformity of the color, and the color change kinetics are of utmost importance. In this investigation, we determined how the composition of the layers that make up the etalon impacts their performance. Specifically, the results indicated that stable etalons can be constructed by simply depositing a layer of Au on top of the microgel layer, as opposed to using a Cr adhesion layer on top of the microgels prior to Au overlayer deposition. We show that thin Au overlayers without a Cr adhesion layer produces Au films that are discontinuous in nature, which in turn directly influences the kinetics of the etalon response. We also confirm that this response pattern holds true for etalon responses to various salt solutions, presenting potential for the future application to alternative analytes of interest.

Coating a thin layer on fibers enables their function coupling or integration into differentiated wearable devices, or may unlock unexplored potentials. The thin layer coating's uniformity and controllability is the prerequisite to ensure device's efficiency, but remain, yet, a formidable challenge. Currently, only a few specific composite fibers have been fabricated from flow coating associated with rapid polymerizing liquid monomers, fibers' parallel handling, or physical scraping, seriously lacking fineness and universality, especially inability reaching nanometer or sub-micrometer thickness coating. Here, a new method of coating an even liquid film on fiber in another immiscible liquid via capitalizing on fast interfacial jamming of nanoparticles at the liquid/liquid interface is proposed. The consequently dried uniform, ultrathin common polymer or composite (predissolved in coated liquid) coating-with otherwise unattainable thickness ranging 50 nm-20 µm-offers fiber with high device performance, including robust service in extreme circumstances (allowing Cu fiber work over the whole range of pH), high efficient display function (with luminous elements <0.01%), and supersensitive sensing with sensor's resistance variation over 90% by less 1 N pressure. The strategy can find extensively diverse applications in wearable electronics and intelligent textiles, as fiber, chemicals of coating liquid, and components, are variable.

To report a case of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy after long-term exposure in a 23-year-old man. Multimodal imaging including fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence, spectral domain optical coherence tomography, and en face optical coherence tomography was performed, in addition to functional testing with full-field electroretinography and Humphrey visual field. A 23-year-old man with a history of juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus and HCQ treatment for 13 years at a dosage of 200 mg/day (cumulative dose: 949 g) presented to the retinal clinic (D.S.). Although fundus photography and fundus autofluorescence were unremarkable, spectral domain optical coherence tomography and en face optical coherence tomography showed paracentral ellipsoid zone loss with thinning of the outer nuclear layer, left eye greater than right eye consistent with HCQ retinopathy. Humphrey visual field 10-2 showed possible nasal loss in both eyes. Genetic testing revealed heterozygous mutations in the CNGA1 and CRX genes but full-field electroretinography was unremarkable without evidence of a cone dystrophy. Family history was negative for genetic disease. This report highlights a case of HCQ retinopathy in a young patient who started treatment at the age of 10 years. There are currently no specific guidelines for the screening of pediatric patients, and studies evaluating the effect of HCQ on children are lacking. Whether the genetic carrier status rendered the patient more susceptible to the toxic effect of HCQ remains to be determined.

We developed a sensor called the Submerged Plasma for Isotopic Detection and Elemental Resolution (SPIDER) probe, which uses an atmospheric pressure glow discharge below the surface of liquids to excite species in the liquid. Through emission spectroscopy of molten salts, liquid metals, and heavy water, we demonstrated the SPIDER probe's high resolution, accuracy, and versatility. We successfully identified trace concentrations of transition and rare-earth metals in molten salts and detected the isotopic shift of the H D emission line. Our analysis revealed unconventional spectral alkali line shapes, indicating two competing excitation modes: film explosion and droplet vaporization. The film explosion mode, characterized by dense plasma, exhibited self-reversal and broadband continuum emission, while the droplet vaporization mode, associated with diffusive plasma, produced narrow-line emissions. By analyzing circuit transients alongside individual plasma events, we observed that film explosions generate higher currents, likely due to a shorter plasma length as the current preferentially flows through the thin liquid layer. Altogether, our results highlight the SPIDER probe's efficacy and flexibility, making it well-suited for online material quantification of liquids in extreme environments.
