Low Gilbert Damping in Bi/In-Doped YIG Thin Films with Giant Faraday Effect

Abstract Magnetic films with low Gilbert damping are crucial for magnonic devices, which provide a promising platform for realizing ultralow-energy devices. In this paper, low Gilbert damping and coercive field were observed in Bi/In-doped Yttrium Iron Garnet (BiIn:YIG) thin films. The BiIn:YIG (444) films were deposited onto different substrates using pulsed laser deposition. Low coercivity (＜1 Oe) with saturation magnetization of 125.09 emu/cc was achieved along the in-plane direction of BiIn:YIG film. The values of Gilbert damping and inhomogeneous broadening of ferromagnetic resonance in BiIn:YIG films were obtained to be as low as 4.05×10-4 and 5.62 Oe, respectively. In addition to low damping, the giant Faraday rotation angles (up to 2.9×104 deg/cm) were also observed in BiIn:YIG film. By modifying the magnetic structure and coupling effect between Bi3+ and Fe3+ of Bi: YIG, doped In3+ plays a key role on variation of the magnetic properties. The low damping and giant Faraday effect made the BiIn:YIG film an appealing candidate for magnonic and magneto-optical devices.

Polymer assisted deposition of YIG thin films with thickness control for spintronics applications

The use of magnetic garnets in new technologies such as spintronic devices requires fine-structured thin films. Classical fabrication techniques for these materials, typically physical vapor deposition methods, lead to excellent magnetic behavior. However, availability and scalability for potential applications are well restricted. In this study, we propose an innovative approach to fabricating Yttrium Iron Garnet thin films with precise thickness control achieved through iterative layer deposition via a chemical synthesis route. Remarkably, the iterative deposition process results in films exhibiting exceptional crystallinity. Magnetic characterization provides saturation magnetization and coercivity values on par with those reported in literature, summed to narrow ferromagnetic resonance lines. Therefore, in this work we demonstrate the viability of polymer assisted deposition as a promising alternative thinking about scalability to conventional deposition techniques for this material. Notably, our findings reveal energy conversion efficiencies comparable to those achieved with materials synthesized via physical vapor deposition methods.

Phase jumps in coupled magnonic waveguides

In this work we present an experimental study of the phase characteristics of magnetostatic quasi-surface waves (MQSW) in a tangentially magnetized yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film bilayer. The phase of MQSWs was measured as a function of air gap (g) between two magnonic waveguides. It is shown that the energy exchange between two YIG layers is accompanied by relatively sharp π-radian phase jumps of MQSWs, at specific values of g. The effect was studied at large wavelengths of the MQSWs, and at a propagation distance of 1 cm. The theory predicts that the slope of the phase shift (∂φ/∂g) at submicrometric values of g can be of the order of a few degrees per nm.

Characterization of parametrically amplified spin wave resonances in thin YIG films

We have experimentally shown that the perpendicular pumping geometry is optimal for parametric amplification of thermal magnons, which form Spin Wave Resonances (SWR) modes in in-plane magnetized Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) films. Above the parametric instability threshold, the parametric SWR spectrum exhibits a second order nonlinearity: the effect of modulational instability at Continuous Wave (CW) pumping. The parametric SWR modes possess a high quality factor, Qf = 2.0 × 106 that is two orders of magnitude more than the Q factor of the Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) in high quality YIG films.

Excitation of exchange spin waves in a magnetic insulator thin film at cryogenic temperatures

Spin waves and their quanta, magnons, are promising candidates for next-generation electronic devices, due to their low-power consumption and compatibility with radio-frequency-based electronic devices. For achieving magnon-based hybrid quantum systems for quantum memory and computation, the investigation of spin-wave propagation at cryogenic temperatures is highly required. In this article, we report the excitation and detection of exchange spin waves with wavelengths of tens of nanometers in an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film at cryogenic temperatures. We find that the exchange spin waves are unidirectional in all temperature ranges, owing to the chiral dynamical dipolar coupling between the spin-wave mode in the YIG and the ferromagnetic resonance mode in the cobalt nanowire. Notably, a high exchange spin-wave group velocity of 2 km s−1 at 10 K is observed. Our results are promising for the development of high-speed and energy-efficient quantum magnonic devices operating at cryogenic temperatures.

Investigation of phonon lifetimes and magnon–phonon coupling in YIG/GGG hybrid magnonic systems in the diffraction limited regime

Quantum memories facilitate the storage and retrieval of quantum information for on-chip and long-distance quantum communications. Thus, they play a critical role in quantum information processing and have diverse applications ranging from aerospace to medical imaging fields. Bulk acoustic wave (BAW) phonons are attractive candidates for quantum memories because of their long lifetimes and high operating frequencies. In this study, we establish a modeling approach to design hybrid magnonic high-overtone bulk acoustic wave resonator (HBAR) structures for high-density, long-lasting quantum memories, and efficient quantum transduction devices. We illustrate the approach by investigating a hybrid magnonic system, consisting of a gadolinium iron garnet (GGG) thick film and a patterned yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film. The BAW phonons are excited in GGG thick film via coupling with magnons in the YIG thin film. We present theoretical and numerical analyses of the diffraction-limited BAW phonon lifetimes, modeshapes, and magnon–phonon coupling strengths in YIG/GGG planar and confocal HBAR (CHBAR) structures. We utilize Fourier beam propagation and Hankel transform eigenvalue problem methods and compare the two methods. We discuss strategies to improve the phonon lifetimes in the diffraction-limited regime, since increased lifetimes have direct implications on the storage times of quantum states for quantum memory applications. We find that ultra-high cooperativities and phonon lifetimes on the order of ∼105 and ∼10 milliseconds, respectively, could be achieved using a CHBAR structure with 10μm YIG lateral area. Additionally, high integration density of on-chip memory or transduction centers is naturally desired for high-density memory or transduction devices. The proposed CHBAR structure will offer more than 100-fold improvement of integration density relative to a recently demonstrated YIG/GGG device. Our results will have direct applicability for devices operating in the cryogenic or milliKelvin regimes. For example, our study will inform the design of HBAR devices that could couple with superconducting qubits for promising quantum information platforms.

Real-time monitoring of breath biomarkers using magnonic wireless sensor based on magnetic nanoparticles

In this paper, an innovative device with gas remote-sensing capability is proposed, which is based on the interaction between magnetic nanoparticles and gases associated with exhaled breath biomarkers that can have a metabolic origin. Magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles of around 30 nm have been used. The gas molecules adsorbed on surface modulate the magnetization of the nanoparticles and magnetostatic surface spin waves (MSSW) propagated on an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film are used to detect this modulation by the induced frequency shift. The optimization of the remote gas sensor has been carried out through simulations of a magnetic model. Simulations show the feasibility of developing a high-performance remote sensor by encapsulating the nanostructures in a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tube and detecting part per million changes in their magnetization. The results show the possibility of developing new, inexpensive, reusable, contactless magnetic gas sensors employing spin waves as transductor. The developed sensor shows a high sensitivity and selectivity to concentrations as low as 50 ppm of different breath biomarkers.

Effect of Ag-doping process into the yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12) thin films on the structural, magnetic and optical properties

In this work, the effect of Ag doping process (directly and as a nanoparticle) into the Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) thin films on the structural, morphological, optical and magnetic properties was studied in detail. Ag-doped YIG thin films were grown on thermally oxidized Si substrates by following sol–gel and spin-coating methods. All films were crystallized without cracks by two-stages heat treatment process. The XRD patterns confirm the formation of YIG peaks, and metallic Ag peaks which settled into the structure without bonding with the YIG components. In both Ag doping processes, the coercive field (Hc) and saturation magnetization (Ms) values of the samples containing 3% Ag are significantly lower than the other samples. The Ms values of 5% Ag doped samples were found the highest in both series. The Ms values of the films between in-plane and out-of-plane measurement increased with the Ag concentration. The optical measurements indicate an absorption peak in the range of 0–4 eV in both sample series and the optical band gap of the films decreased with the Ag doping due to its metallic characteristic. The ferromagnetic resonance measurements indicate that the lowest FMR linewidth as 92 Oe is seen in the 1% Ag-doped YIG sample. The relatively cheap and easy production of the used method and additive material may enable the widespread the usage of Ag-doped YIG thin films in magneto-optical devices.

Giant anisotropic Gilbert damping and spin wave propagations in single-crystal magnetic insulator

Gilbert damping in magnetic systems describes the relaxation of magnetization. This term was phenomenologically introduced into the Landau–Lifschitz–Gilbert (LLG) equation to describe spin dynamics. In most studies, such as magnetic random access memory, spin-wave propagations, and microwave devices, it has been assumed that the Gilbert damping is an isotropic constant. In this study, we uncover a giant anisotropic Gilbert damping parameter of up to 431% in single-crystal thin films of epitaxial [100]-oriented yttrium iron garnet (YIG) using angle-dependent ferromagnetic resonance. In contrast, the Gilbert damping parameter of a [111]-oriented YIG film is almost isotropic. The observed anisotropic damping is shown to have a similar fourfold symmetry with magneto-crystalline anisotropy. The anisotropic spin-wave group velocity (vg), relaxation time (τ), and decay length (ld) were also experimentally evaluated through spin-wave spectra of [100]-oriented YIG thin film. We developed the LLG equation with the introduction of an anisotropic orbital Gilbert damping term. This anisotropic orbital damping originates from the crystal-field dominated anisotropic spin–orbit coupling and orbital-related magnon–phonon coupling. Our results extend the understanding of the mechanism of anisotropic Gilbert damping in single-crystal magnetic insulators with strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy.

Magneto-optical epitaxial bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet thin films on a diamagnetic substrate for low temperature applications

The uprising interest in the integration of the magneto-optical iron garnets into the field of quantum information processing imposes requirements for the damping parameter and optical properties at low temperatures. Typically, high quality iron garnet films are mostly grown epitaxially on the paramagnetic substrates that have rare-earth elements in its composition, which leads to an increase of their magnetic damping at temperatures below 100 K. Here, we epitaxially grew magneto-optical ferromagnetic garnet films on a diamagnetic yttrium scandium gallium garnet substrate to demonstrate narrow ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth at temperature range from 300 K to 4 K. The maximum Faraday angle measured at wavelength of 660 nm is ΘF = 0.34 ⋅103 deg/cm at 65 K. The FMR linewidth of the iron garnet film gets slightly larger as temperature decreases, but still remains at a level of 35 Oe at 4 GHz even at 4 K. The investigated iron garnet thin films grown on diamagnetic substrates can be successfully implemented in low-temperature technological applications that require low damping and high magneto-optical response.

Magnonic demultiplexer-switch based on the cluster of coupled ferrimagnetic Mach–Zehnder interferometers

Here we study the spin-wave propagation in a system of Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZI) based on ferrimagnetic yttrium-iron garnet (YIG) thin film. The angular momentum transfer during the excitation of a surface magnetostatic spin wave and the coupling of the spin-waves inside the adjacent arms of MZIs is studied using the micromagnetic modeling method. The local variation of the YIG magnetization inside the arms of MZI manifests itself both in the phase shift of the propagating spin-wave signal and coupling efficiency in the region where the adjacent arms of MZI are placed in the close proximity to each other. The switching/demultiplexing performance which is reflected in the spatial frequency selection of the spin-wave signal upon dynamical local change of the magnetization in each of four arms of the interferometers is demonstrated. The proposed MZI demonstrates the basis for the realization of the set of logical operations and could serve the facility of add and drop frequencies (channels) to and from a magnonic data bus in frequency division multiplexed magnonic networks. The use of laterally coupled interferometers opens new possibilities for the formation of the logical magnon devices tuned by the local variation of magnetization which could be realized with the locally focused laser heating.

Formirovanie polos nepropuskaniyaspin-volnovogo signala v meandrovykh strukturakh iz ZhIG

A meander waveguide made of an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film with variation of the profile is studied with a view to the possible control of band bands for surface spin waves (SSWs). The finite element method is used to determine the control mechanism of forbidden band gaps in thin YIG films. The electromagnetic problem is solved, and the dispersion characteristics of spin waves are plotted for various geometrical parameters of the meander. The nature of the change in the frequency ranges of Bragg forbidden band gaps is studied in detail depending on the profile of the meander. It is demonstrated that a three-dimensional spin-wave structure with broken translational symmetry that uses vertical spin-wave transport provides an information signal transmission in a three-dimensional configuration of magnonic networks.

VIS-NIR TMOKE enhanced dielectric-metal hybrid structure for high performance dual-channel sensing.

Magneto-plasmon sensors based on the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) have been extensively studied in recent years. In this paper, we theoretically propose a hybrid structure composed of a one-dimensional bismuth iron garnet: yttrium iron garnet (BIG: YIG) nanowire arrays and thin film stack, which is grown on an infinite thick silicon wafer. The thin film stack, from top to bottom, consists of the following layers: BIG: YIG, SiO2, and Au. By exciting the magnetic dipole resonance mode between the cylindrical nanowires and the SPP mode on the surface of the Au film, dual-channel sensing has been achieved in both visible and infrared spectra. The results demonstrate that the TMOKE response spectrum of the structure supports ultra-narrow linewidths of 0.03 nm in the visible light range and 1.54 nm in the infrared range. By changing the refractive index of the analyte, the detected sensitivity of the sensor system in visible and infrared bands is 553 nm RIU-1 and 285 nm RIU-1, and the Figure of merit (FOM) can reach up to 69125 RIU-1 and 303 RIU-1, respectively. This work provides a theoretical basis and a feasible approach for the design of dual channel gas sensors.

Structural and magnetic properties of YIG thin films deposited by pulsed laser deposition and RF magnetron sputtering technique

Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) has been extensively explored for its potential avenues in spintronic applications. A majority of these studies employ thin films grown by PLD at high substrate temperature, which generally leads to an interfacial dead layer with cations interdiffusion hindering their technological implications. In this communication, we report the growth of YIG thin films at room temperature by PLD and RF sputtering techniques. Detailed structural investigation confirms the thin films’ single-phase growth and epitaxial nature. We have a further detailed investigation of magnetic properties by dc magnetization, magneto-optical Kerr effect and FMR techniques. Although our thin films exhibit a comparatively lower magnetic performance in terms of saturation magnetization and damping constant, we have obtained a significantly lower interfacial dead layer thickness of ∼1 nm, which is quite promising for spin transport applications. The present study, therefore, calls for future studies for simultaneous optimization of magnetic performance and interfacial dead layer with room temperature grown YIG thin films by both PLD and RF sputtering methods.

Temperature dependence of optical fiber current sensor with external conversion

The paper presents the research of a optical fiber current sensor with external conversion (OFCS-EC) as a function of temperature. The sensor was developed in the Department of Optoelectronics. The sensor was tested in the temperature range from 23 °C – 80 °C. For each of the temperatures, the sensitivity was determined on the basis of a sinusoidal waveform. Thus, the linearity of the transfer characteristics was checked. The main purpose of the experiment was to check the limits of sensitivity changes in changing thermal conditions and whether the sensor meets the standards used in the power industry. Faraday rotator based on a silicon photonic crystal slab on a bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet thin film

We report the design of an ultrathin Faraday rotator consisting of a silicon photonic crystal (PhC) slab on a bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi:YIG) thin film. By directing light into guided modes in the Bi:YIG layer via diffraction in the PhC layer, we numerically demonstrate a Faraday rotation angle of ∼45° at a telecom wavelength with a Bi:YIG layer thickness of only ∼500 nm. This structure permits a high light transmittance of about 70%, enabled by electromagnetically induced transparency. The proposed design only requires nanopatterning of the Si layer, providing a viable route to practical ultrathin Faraday rotators.

Angular-dependent spin-wave modes observations and excitation origins in Yttrium iron garnet thin films

We present a study of the dynamic magnetic properties of sputtered-grown YIG films that were subsequently annealed at various temperatures. Our investigation involved the use of the ferromagnetic resonance technique enabled the observation of multimode spin waves spectra. A noticeable increase in the visibility of the multimode spin-wave modes was observed. This finding is ascribed to the rise in surface roughness and anti-site defects in our YIG films as the annealing temperatures increased. We analyzed the correlation between spin-wave modes and the orientation of the magnetic field H. Results showed that a spectrum made up of a variety of spin-wave modes is seen when the applied field H is normal to the film plane. Once the H is tilted from the normal, a critical angle of only one uniform precession mode was detected for some orientations. A fourfold symmetry of the resonance field emerges as H is in the film plane, ascribed to the anisotropy along different crystal orientations of YIG film. Finally, we were able to determine the exchange stiffness constant and distortion parameter by analyzing the spin waves resonance spectra.

Effect of intense x-ray free-electron laser transient gratings on the magnetic domain structure of Tm:YIG

In ferromagnets, domain patterns can be controlled globally using magnetic fields or spin-polarized currents. In contrast, the local control of the magnetization on the nanometer length scale remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate how magnetic domain patterns in a Tm-doped yttrium iron garnet (Tm:YIG) thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be permanently and locally imprinted by high intensity photon pulses of a hard x-ray transient grating (XTG). Micromagnetic simulations provide a qualitative understanding of the observed changes in the orientation of magnetic domains in Tm:YIG and XTG-induced changes. The presented results offer a route for the local manipulation of the magnetic state using hard XTG.
