A LIBRARY RESEARCH: THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GENRE BASED APPROACH IN INDONESIAN VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS

Genre Based Approach (GBA) had been implemented for a decade in English Curriculumof Indonesia. It was expected that this approach could develop four language skills simultaneously through its four stages of teaching and learning cycles, namely Building Knowlege of Field (BKOF), Modelling of Text (MOT), Join Construction of Text (JCOT) and Independent Construction of Text (ICOT). This study aims to review the implementation of GBA in Vocatioanal High School (VHS) and its impact to the learning process. It applied a library research to analyze two thesis and six research journals on the implementation GBA in VHS that focus mostly in writing skills. The results show that teachers have applied GBA using the correct stages though there are some weaknesses within the process. Teachers and students give positive response toward the implementation of GBA that can be seen through their enthusiam during the teaching and learning process. Finally, this study also revealed that GBA can improve students learning results that is proven from the students’writing scores that increase after the implementation of GBA.

Textuality in Online News Paper Articles

Textuality is a key concept in text linguistics. It is a property that a text must have in order to be regarded as a good text. In this paper, an attempt is made to arrive at the aspects of textuality utilized in online newspaper articles. More precisely, the paper endeavors to answer the following question: what are the most prevalent aspects of textuality utilized in this kind of discourse? As such, this paper aims at identifying the most common aspects of textuality exploited in online newspaper articles. Accordingly, it is hypothesized that cohesion, coherence, and informativity are the most prevalent aspects of textuality utilized in online newspaper articles. In order to achieve the aims of this paper and test its hypothesis, De Beaugrande and Dressler’s (1981) model of textuality is utilized for the analysis of the data under scrutiny. The analysis is executed on six articles retrieved from online British newspapers, namely, The Independent, The Telegraph, The Guardian, and Express. Findings of the analysis validate the above mentioned hypothesis.

A hybrid model for depression detection using deep learning

Millions of people are suffering from mental illness due to unavailability of early treatment and services for depression detection. It is the major reason for anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, sleeping disorder, depression and sometimes it may lead to self-harm and suicide. Thus, it is a very challenging task to recognize people who are suffering from mental health disorders and provide them treatments as early as possible. Conventionally, depression detection was done through patients' interviews and PHQ scores, accuracy of conventional methods is very less. In this work, a hybrid model is proposed for depression detection using deep learning algorithms, which mainly combines textual features and audio features of patient's responses. To study behavioral characteristics of depressed patient's, DAIC-WoZ database is used. Proposed method consists of three components; first, a textual CNN model in which a CNN model is trained with only text features, second, an audio CNN model in which CNN model is trained with only audio features and third, a combination of audio and textual model named as hybrid model in which LSTM algorithms are applied. An improved version of LSTM model named as Bi-LSTM model is also used in the proposed work. In results, training accuracy, training loss, validation accuracy and validation loss is calculated for all the mentioned models. The results shows that deep learning is a better solution for depression detection in which accuracy of textual CNN model is 92% whereas accuracy of audio CNN model is 98% and loss of textual CNN is 0.2 whereas loss of audio CNN is 0.1. These results show that audio CNN is a good model for depression detection. It performs better as compared to textual CNN model. It is also observed that Bi-LSTM has better learning rate as compared to other models with accuracy 88% and validation accuracy 78%. There are some parameters such as precision, F1-score, recall and support are found for evaluation of models. In results, graphs for training loss, validation loss, training accuracy and validation accuracy are plotted. At last, by using confusion matrix depression can be detected for textual CNN Model, audio CNN model, LSTM model and Bi-LSTM against true label and predicted label.

Pekanbaru Mayoral Election 2024: Critical Discourse Analysis Review

This study was motivated by the widespread coverage of the nomination for Mayor of Pekanbaru in 2024 by Riau's local media. This study's objective is to examine the alignments of GoRiau.com in shaping the reputation of political actors in the Pekanbaru Mayoral election for the years 2024 to 2029. This study employs the Fairclough model's text analysis, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice approaches. This research's fundamental technique is tapping, with the method of analyzing social change models. According to the results of this study, GoRiau.com is aligned with Agung Nugroho. In addition to being among the names that dominate the number of reports, he also benefits from the media's political narrative. Agung Nugroho's news history is dominated by political issues, and the content produced has generally resulted in favorable public opinion. Several conditions affect the neutrality of the mass media, including the Democratic Party's two-period political dominance in Pekanbaru City, Agung Nugroho's success in obtaining the most votes in Pekanbaru City during the 2019 Riau Legislative Election, and Agung Nugroho's strategic position as Deputy Chair of the Riau Legislative Institution, in addition to being the chairman of the Riau Democratic Party. This mass media alignment will benefit Agung Nugroho in the upcoming 2024 Pekanbaru mayoral election, as one of the largest media outlets in Riau. An Underwater Human-Robot Interaction Using a Visual-Textual Model for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles.

The marine environment presents a unique set of challenges for human-robot interaction. Communicating with gestures is a common way for interacting between the diver and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). However, underwater gesture recognition is a challenging visual task for AUVs due to light refraction and wavelength color attenuation issues. Current gesture recognition methods classify the whole image directly or locate the hand position first and then classify the hand features. Among these purely visual approaches, textual information is largely ignored. This paper proposes a visual-textual model for underwater hand gesture recognition (VT-UHGR). The VT-UHGR model encodes the underwater diver's image as visual features, the category text as textual features, and generates visual-textual features through multimodal interactions. We guide AUVs to use image-text matching for learning and inference. The proposed method achieves better performance than most existing purely visual methods on the dataset CADDY, demonstrating the effectiveness of using textual patterns for underwater gesture recognition.

From Text Signals to Simulations: A Review and Complement to Text as Data by Grimmer, Roberts & Stewart (PUP 2022)

Text as Data represents a major advance for teaching text analysis in the social sciences, digital humanities and data science by providing an integrated framework for how to conceptualize and deploy natural language processing techniques to enrich descriptive and causal analyses of social life in and from text. Here I review achievements of the book and highlight complementary paths not taken, including discussion of recent computational techniques like transformers, which have come to dominate automated language understanding and are just beginning to find their way into the careful research designs showcased in the book. These new methods not only highlight text as a signal from society, but textual models as simulations of society, which could fuel future advances in causal inference and experimentation. Text as Data's focus on textual discovery, measurement and inference points us toward this new frontier, cautioning us not to ignore, but build upon social scientific interpretation and theory.

Identification of Multilingual Offense and Troll from Social Media Memes Using Weighted Ensemble of Multimodal Features

In recent years, memes have become a common medium of promulgating offensive views by the content polluters in social media. Due to their multimodal nature, memes can easily evade the content regulators’ eyes. The proliferation of these undesired or harmful memes can cause a detrimental impact on social harmony. Therefore, restraining offensive memes on social media is of utmost importance. However, analyzing memes is very complicated as they implicitly express human emotions. Previous studies have not explored the joint modelling of multimodal features and their counteractive unimodal features (i.e., image, text) to classify undesired memes. This paper presents a framework that utilizes the weighted ensemble technique to assign weights to the participating visual, textual and multimodal models. The state-of-the-art visual (i.e., VGG19, VGG16, ResNet50) and textual (i.e., multilingual-BERT, multilingual-DistilBERT, XLM-R) models are employed to make the constituent modules of the framework. Moreover, two fusion approaches (i.e., early fusion and late fusion) are used to combine the visual and textual features for developing the multimodal models. The evaluations have demonstrated that the proposed weighted ensemble technique improves the performance over the investigated unimodal, multimodal, and ensemble models. The result shows that the proposed approach achieves superior outcomes on two multilingual benchmark datasets (MultiOFF and TamilMemes), with 66.73% and 58.59% weighted f1-scores, respectively. Furthermore, the comparative analysis reveals that the proposed approach outdoes other existing works by improving approximately 13% and 2% weighted f1-score gain.

Ellipsis in Mosuli Arabic Discourse: A Functional Pragmatically-based Study

This paper is an attempt to study ellipsis and the elliptical strategies used in Mosuli Arabic discourse from a functional pragmatically based perspective. It aims at investigating the types and functions of ellipsis, alongside the elliptical strategies employed by Mosuli Arabic speakers in the everyday discourse. In order to achieve this aim, it is hypothesized that: (1) Ellipsis and elliptical strategies are frequently used in Mosuli Arabic daily situational discourse with specific functions, (2) Ellipsis is pragmatically oriented, hence contextually interpreted (3) Ellipsis, as communicative strategy in Mosuli Arabic interactions, falls into several types and functions. A descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. Three episodes of a sitcom are chosen as a data reflection to Mosuli every-day discourse. The data utterances, after their collection, transcription, and identification, are analyzed on the basis of a functional pragmatically based model, which is built on certain theorizations taken from two well-known models; namely, the textual model of Halliday and Hasan (1976), and the pragmatic model of Grice (1989). The study has found, due to the results obtained by data analysis, that Mosuli Arabic interlocutors, when engaged in a conversational discourse, use, by violating, flouting, clashing, or opting out CP maxims, certain elliptical strategies with specific intended communicative functions. In this regard, it has been found that such breaking procedure is recovered and interpreted contextually within the relevant conversational implicature, underlying the elliptical utterances, which is activated by the pragmatic dichotomy; 'presupposition' and 'inference'. As a striking conclusion, ellipsis, along its strategies, types and functions realized in the contextual situations considered here, is daily used in the Mosuli Arabic discourse, where it is proved to be pragmatically and linguistically determined by the cultural ideology of Mosuli Arabic speech-community.

A Comparative Study of Data-Driven Models for Travel Destination Characterization.

Characterizing items for content-based recommender systems is a challenging task in complex domains such as travel and tourism. In the case of destination recommendation, no feature set can be readily used as a similarity ground truth, which makes it hard to evaluate the quality of destination characterization approaches. Furthermore, the process should scale well for many items, be cost-efficient, and most importantly correct. To evaluate which data sources are most suitable, we investigate 18 characterization methods that fall into three categories: venue data, textual data, and factual data. We make these data models comparable using rank agreement metrics and reveal which data sources capture similar underlying concepts. To support choosing more suitable data models, we capture a desired concept using an expert survey and evaluate our characterization methods toward it. We find that the textual models to characterize cities perform best overall, with data models based on factual and venue data being less competitive. However, we show that data models with explicit features can be optimized by learning weights for their features.

Penerapan Model Pembelajaran Berbasis Teks pada Mata Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris di SMPN 2 Kumai

This study aims to determine student learning outcomes in English subjects by applying text-based learning, increasing activity, and student learning outcomes. The results showed that the learning process using the Text-Based Learning model was BKOF (Building Knowledge of Field), MOT (Modelling of Text), and JCOT (Join Construction of Text). The implementation of the research from cycle 1 to cycle 2 has improved. This study shows that student learning outcomes have increased after the action. The percentage of students who have not completed continues to decline from cycle 1 to cycle 2 (from 26.47% to 8.82%). The percentage of students who have completed has increased from cycle 1 to cycle 2 (from 73.53% to 91.18%). The indicator of the success of this CAR is that this CAR is said to be successful if the percentage of students whose learning outcomes are assessed as complete reaches a minimum of 85%. The table shows that the percentage of students whose grades have been completed has reached 91.18%, so this CAR has been successful.

The scene of the Muse’s Lament in the exodus of the polemic tragedy Rhesus stands out for its compositional features. In this article I analyse verses 890-982 and its thrênos, as a kind of a singular poetry in terms of its type and function, and the controversial reading of those textual models postulated as underlying, with special attention to its temporality. In this way, I attempt to show there is a compositional matrix of the funeral lament reformulated and reworked significantly new.

СТРАТЕГИЯ РАЗВИТИЯ МУНИЦИПАЛЬНОЙ СИСТЕМЫ ОБРАЗОВАНИЯ (на примере городского округа Рефтинский)

Changes in modern society and the economy lead to rapid transformations in the education system. Despite the strategic documents developed at the level of the Russian Federation and the regions on the development of this system, strategic mechanisms have not yet been developed to facilitate the implementation of effective strategic decisions in the development of the municipal education system. The article examines the methodological foundations for the development of a strategy for the development of the municipal education system using systemic and institutional approaches, methods of graphic and textual modeling, expert assessments, comparative analysis and decomposition. On the example of the Reftinsky city district of the Sverdlovsk region, possible strategic guidelines for the development of such a system are considered. The analysis of the situation in the educational sphere of the district is given, the necessity of a strategic approach to the management of the municipal education system, implemented through an appropriate program, is argumentatively proved. The directions of changes in the implementation of the strategy for the development of the education system of the city district are formulated.

Commentary vs. ’Hymen’?

The paper examines the intertextual structure of Christoph Ransmayr’s novel Die letzte Welt, focusing on the double strategy of integrating Ovid’s Metamorphoses into the novel’s textual and diegetic level. Borrowing Gérard Genette’s term, it argues that though Ransmayr evokes the structure of a metatextual relationship between his own and Ovid’s work, finally it undermines the distinction between commenting and commented texts. Following a brief survey of the early reception of Ransmayr’s novel and of the political issues raised by critical readings, the essay argues for applying a different textual model that does not presuppose the distinction between original or source and secondary texts, proposing instead the concept of an intrinsic difference as suggested by Jacques Derrida’s notion of “hymen”, that is, a difference working like a dividing and permeable membrane.

Generation of Custom Textual Model Editors

Textual editors are omnipresent in all software tools. Editors provide basic features, such as copy-pasting and searching, or more advanced features, such as error checking and text completion. Current technologies in model-driven engineering can automatically generate textual editors to manipulate domain-specific languages (DSLs). However, the customization and addition of new features to these editors is often limited to changing the internal structure and behavior. In this paper, we explore a new generation of self-descriptive textual editors for DSLs, allowing full configuration of their structure and behavior in a convenient formalism, rather than in source code. We demonstrate the feasibility of the approach by providing a prototype implementation and applying it in two domain-specific modeling scenarios, including one in architecture modeling.

The Textual Architecture of Empire in Two Early Qing Anthologies

Abstract During the first half century of the Qing dynasty, Manchu emperors commissioned massive publication projects on the Chinese classics. In early Qing interpretations of classics on the family, negotiations between Manchu and Han family and gender norms furthered the empire-building project. This article compares the spatial form of the Yuding Nei ze yanyi 御定内則衍義 (1656), an expansion of the “Inner Standards” chapter of the Classic of Rites commissioned by the Shunzhi emperor, to that of the Yuding Xiao jing yanyi 御定孝經衍義 (1682), an expansion of the Classic of Filial Piety commissioned by the Kangxi emperor. These works are textual spaces where the cultural and political negotiations of the early Qing empire play out; they use spatial strategies of juxtaposition and hierarchy to balance different messages for different constituencies, creating textual models of empire.

Instructional Learning Materials’ Use and Students Academic Outcomes in Private Secondary Schools sin Rwanda: A Case Study of Nyarugenge District

The study aimed at investigating the influence of instructional learning materials use on students’ academic outcomes in private secondary schools in Nyarugenge District. The objectives that guided the study were: to identify the instructional learning materials used by teachers in the teaching and learning process in secondary schools of Rwanda; to assess the students’ academic outcomes resulting from the implication of instructional learning materials in teaching and learning process; to establish relationship between instructional learning materials and the students’ academic outcomes. The study was guided by system theory and descriptive survey design and correlational design. The sample of 244 respondents including students, teachers, headteachers and deputy headteacher in charge of study participated in this study. Questionnaires and interview schedule were used to collect data. Frequencies, percentages, mean, thematic approach and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient were used to analyse collected data, whereas, tables, figures and textual model were used to present collected data. The study findings revealed textbooks, worksheets, computers, chats, projectors, recoding books for students’ progress, chalks, internet sources, laboratory materials and workshops as the commonly used teaching and learning materials in private secondary schools in Nyarugenge district. Furthermore, findings revealed that computers and laboratory materials are not adequately used. The findings from teachers revealed that 68% of participated teachers agreed that effective use of instructional learning materials in teaching and learning process improves learners’ motivations in learning, and improves students’ academic outcomes, 82% of teachers reported that effective use of instructional learning materials improves students class participations. Furthermore, findings revealed a significant relationship between instructional learning materials and the student’s academic outcomes in private secondary schools in Nyarugenge district. This was revealed by p- value of 0.000 in the findings given by students and p- value of 0.004 in the findings given by the teachers. In addition, findings revealed that there is a positive degree of relationship between instructional learning materials and students’ academic outcomes as shown by the computed Karl Pearson product moment correlational coefficient of 0.433 and 0.78 findings from students and teachers respectively. The study recommended that students need to use effectively and efficiently available leaning materials in their schools. Teachers should use available learning materials in effective ways. In the schools where there are inadequate learning materials, they should explain to their leader the need for these materials. The study also recommended that school leaders should do all possible measures to provide their schools with adequate learning materials. Relaying the Epistemic Foundations of a Transcultural Natural Theology: Proving the Existence of God in Valignano’s Catechismus christianae fidei and Ruggieri’s Tianzhu shilu

When European missionaries first entered Asia and the New World, they largely transposed to their new contexts European catechisms that assumed the intellectual passivity of the catechumen. The Jesuits, however, soon realized that such textual models would not be appropriate in East Asia which boasted its own sophisticated philosophical traditions. This article explores how Michele Ruggieri (1543–1607) deploys and adapts in his pioneering Chinese catechism, Tianzhu shilu 天主實錄 (The true record of the Lord of Heaven, 1584), innovations in the catechism genre that Jesuit missionaries had originally developed for Japan. By comparing Ruggieri’s arguments for the existence of God with those found in the Catechismus christianae fidei (Catechism of the Christian faith, 1586) composed by Alessandro Valignano (1539–1606) for the Japan mission, this article shows that Ruggieri lays the groundwork for a transcultural natural theology that de-emphasizes metaphysics in favour of arguments derived from a shared ethical understanding and political analogies.

Towards a Verification-Driven Iterative Development of Software for Safety-Critical Cyber-Physical Systems

Software systems are complicated, and the scientific and engineering methodologies for software development are relatively young. Cyber-physical systems are now in every corner of our lives, and we need robust methods for handling the ever-increasing complexity of their software systems. Model-Driven Development is a promising approach to tackle the complexity of systems through the concept of abstraction, enabling analysis at earlier phases of development. In this paper, we propose a model-driven approach with a focus on guaranteeing safety using formal verification. Cyber-physical systems are distributed, concurrent, asynchronous and event-based reactive systems with timing constraints. The actor-based textual modeling language, Rebeca, with model checking support is used for formal verification. Starting from structured requirements and system architecture design the behavioral models, including Rebeca models, are built. Properties of interest are also derived from the structured requirements, and then model checking is used to formally verify the properties. This process can be performed in iterations until satisfaction of desired properties are ensured, and possible ambiguities and inconsistencies in requirements are resolved. The formally verified models can then be used to develop the executable code. The Rebeca models include the details of the signals and messages that are passed at the network level including the timing, and this facilitates the generation of executable code. The natural mappings among the models for requirements, the formal models, and the executable code improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the approach.
