Changes in the particulate organic carbon pump efficiency since the Last Glacial Maximum in the northwestern Philippine Sea

Changes in bottom and pore water oxygenation over glacial – interglacial cycles have influenced the ocean's capacity to store particulate organic carbon regardless of its source, either the marine primary productivity or the continent-to-ocean transfer of terrestrial organic matter. In the Philippine Sea, east off Taiwan, despite being currently oligotrophic, the enhanced East Asian Winter Monsoon during the Last Glacial Maximum and the Heinrich Stadial 1 might have altered the nutrient budget in surface waters by providing nutrients from the Eurasian loess dust and deepening the vertical mixing, bringing nutrients from the nutrient-enriched Kuroshio Current subsurface waters to the surface. During the deglaciation, previous studies also suggest an overall weakening of the marine biological pump during the Heinrich Stadial 1, and the rise in sea level is expected to have led to a global significant decline in the ability of continents to bury their particulate organic carbon in marine sediments. However, changes in the continent-ocean transfer of terrestrial organic matter and on the marine biological pump around Taiwan remain poorly constrained.In the present study, we have thus aimed to reconstruct bottom – pore water oxygenation, past marine primary productivity and continental-ocean transfer of terrestrial particulate organic carbon to the ocean since the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, in order to better constrain the ability of marine sediments to capture atmospheric carbon over the past 20,000 years. To this end, sediment core MD18-3523 has been recovered from a levee of Hoping Canyon, north-east of Taiwan, in the Ryukyu forearc basin. The reconstructions were made possible by the application of multivariate statistics and transfer functions on benthic foraminiferal assemblages, by the measurement of total organic carbon concentration and by the investigation of chemical element ratios obtained from X-ray fluorescence (XRF).We observed a transition across the Bølling–Allerød and the Younger Dryas from suboxic-dysoxic bottom – pore waters during Heinrich Stadial 1 to oxic-suboxic during the Holocene, and revealed an increase in marine primary productivity during Heinrich Stadial 1 in all probability due to intensified East Asian Winter Monsoon winds. We have also identified periods of enhanced terrestrial particulate organic carbon transfer to the ocean driven by short-lived extreme events, most likely typhoons, during the Bølling–Allerød, at the beginning of the Early Holocene and the end of the Late Holocene, when the typhoon dynamics affecting Taiwan were intensified. Overall, these findings suggest an enhanced marine biological pump during the Heinrich Stadial 1 and an efficient carbon turbidity pump during the Bølling–Allerød, the Early and Late Holocene, contrasting with the western coast of Taiwan.

Terrestrial and marine POC export fluxes estimated by 234Th–238U disequilibrium and δ13C measurements in the East China Sea shelf

The use of 234Th–238U disequilibrium has been widely employed to estimate the sinking flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) from the upper sea and ocean. Here, the deficits of 234Th relative to 238U in the water column and the carbon isotope signature (δ13C) of POC in the East China Sea (ECS) Shelf were measured, which was used to distinguish the fraction of marine and terrestrial POC export fluxes. In the ECS Shelf, very strong deficits of 234Th relative to 238U were observed throughout the water column, with 234Th/238U activity ratios ranging from 0.158 ± 0.045 to 0.904 ± 0.068 (averaging 0.426 ± 0.159). The residence times of particle reactive radionuclide 234Th (τTh–T) in the ECS shelf water varied between 9 and 44 days, which is significantly shorter than that in the continental slope area or the basin area. This phenomenon indicates that there is a more rapid particle scavenging process in the ECS shelf water compared to the continental slope and basin upper water. By applying a two-end-member mixing model based on the δ13C, the fraction of terrestrial POC was estimated to be 0 to 74% (mean: 30 ± 22%) and the fraction of marine POC was in the range of 25% to 100% (mean: 70 ± 22%). Fluxes of marine and terrestrial POC settling to the seafloor exhibited significant spatial differences among different stations, ranging from 11 to 129 mmol C/m2/day and from 2.6 to 38 mmol C/m2/day, respectively. The averaged terrestrial POC fluxes in the southern and northern ECS Shelf were similar (~ 21 to 24 mmol C/m2/day), while the marine POC fluxes in the north (86 ± 37 mmol C/m2/day) were approximately four times higher than those in the south (26 ± 20 mmol C/m2/day). Interestingly, the estimated export flux of both marine and terrestrial POC were approximately one order of magnitude higher than the previously reported burial fluxes of POC (ranging from 1.1 ± 0.1 to 11.4 ± 1.1 mmol C/m2/day) in the underlying bottom sediments, indicating that the majority (> 90%) of both terrestrial and marine POC exported from the upper water column are degraded in the sediments of the ECS Shelf. This “carbon missing” phenomenon can greatly be attributed to rapid decomposition by other processes (including microbial reworking, cross-shelf transport, and possible consumption by benthic organisms). Our findings highlight the dynamic nature of carbon cycling in the continental shelf and the need for further research to understand these processes and improve carbon budget assessments.

Anthropogenic Perturbations Change the Quality and Quantity of Terrestrial Carbon Flux to the Coastal Ocean

AbstractHuman activities have increasingly changed terrestrial particulate organic carbon (POC) export to the coastal ocean since the Industrial Age (19th century). However, the influence of human perturbations on the composition and flux of terrestrial biospheric and petrogenic POC sub‐pools remains poorly constrained. Here, we examined 13C and 14C compositions of bulk POC and source‐specific biomarkers (fatty acids, FA) from two nearshore sediment cores collected in the Pearl River‐derived mudbelt, to determine the impacts of human perturbations of the Pearl River watershed on the burial of terrestrial POC in the coastal ocean over the last century. Our results show that although agricultural practices and deforestation during the 1930s–1950s increased C4 plant coverage in the watershed, the export fluxes of terrestrial biospheric and petrogenic POC remained rather unchanged; however, added perturbations since 1974, including increasing coal consumption, embankment and dam constructions caused massive export of both petrogenic POC and relatively fresh terrestrial biospheric POC from the river delta. Our data reveal that human activities substantially enhance the transfer of petrogenic POC and fresh biospheric POC to the coastal ocean after ca. 1974, with the latter process acting as an important sink for anthropogenic CO2.

Source, composition, and reactivity of particulate organic matter along the Changjiang Estuary salinity gradient and adjacent sea

The sources, distribution, and fate of particulate organic matter (POM) in estuaries are dynamic and complex, influenced by highly intensive human activities and high productivity. In this study, water samples were collected along the Changjiang Estuary salinity gradient and adjacent sea (CEAS) in February and May 2017. Particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate nitrogen (PN), the δ13C isotope values and major biochemical constituent (total particulate amino acids, TPAA) were measured. The concentrations of POC, PN, and TPAA showed an overall decreasing trend from the river end-member to the open sea; however, their maximum always occurred around the turbidity maximum zone (TMZ). Concentrations of POC and TPAA showed a negative correlation with salinity and a positive correlation with chlorophyll a, indicating that the variation in POM concentrations and composition was mainly controlled by both terrigenous input and in situ phytoplankton production. The δ13C values gradually increased from the river mouth to the open sea in both winter and spring, in contrast to the molar C/N, reflecting the transition from terrestrial POC to phytoplankton-derived fresh POC with increasing salinity. Major biochemical indicators of TPAA/POC (%) and the degradation index (DI), showed a gradual shift towards more bioactive POM with increasing salinity in spring, although low TPAA/POC (%) values appeared within the TMZ. In spring, POC reactivity was higher than in winter. The proportions of glycine (Gly) and serine (Ser) were higher in winter, indicating that POM had suffered extensive degradation. Based on a two end-member mixing model, the contribution of marine POC in spring (53 ± 14%) was significantly greater than in winter (39 ± 19%), indicating that phytoplankton-derived POM was dominant in spring, associated with the increase in phytoplankton biomass from winter to spring. Based on mass balance, a box model showed evidence of a net POC sink over the Changjiang estuary and its adjacent East China Sea shelf in both winter and spring, with a net POC budget of 20.49 ± 7.01 and 15.87 ± 6.57 kmol s−1, respectively. Results illustrate that the spatio-temporal distribution of POM varies distinctively and will further affect the variability in its composition and reactivity in the CEAS.

MOdern River archivEs of Particulate Organic Carbon: MOREPOC

Abstract. Riverine transport of particulate organic carbon (POC) associated with terrigenous solids to the ocean has an important role in the global carbon cycle. To advance our understanding of the source, transport, and fate of fluvial POC from regional to global scales, databases of riverine POC are needed, including elemental and isotope composition data from contrasted river basins in terms of geomorphology, lithology, climate, and anthropogenic pressure. Here, we present a new, open-access, georeferenced, and global database called MOdern River archivEs of Particulate Organic Carbon (MOREPOC) version 1.1, featuring data on POC in suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected at 233 locations across 121 major river systems. This database includes 3546 SPM data entries, among them 3053 with POC content, 3402 with stable carbon isotope (δ13C) values, 2283 with radiocarbon activity (Δ14C) values, 1936 with total nitrogen content, and 299 with an aluminum-to-silicon ratio (Al / Si). The MOREPOC database aims at being used by the Earth system community to build comprehensive and quantitative models for the mobilization, alteration, and fate of terrestrial POC. The database is made available on the Zenodo repository in machine-readable formats as a data table and GIS shapefile at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7055970 (Ke et al., 2022).

A novel semianalytical remote sensing retrieval strategy and algorithm for particulate organic carbon in inland waters based on biogeochemical-optical mechanisms

The estimation of particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations from satellite images can provide crucial spatiotemporal continuous observation data for the carbon cycle and ecological environmental governance. Here, we developed a novel inversion algorithm for deriving POC in inland water based on remote sensing and geochemical isotopes, which is summarized as follows. First, we developed empirical relationships between the phytoplankton absorption coefficient and endogenous POC concentration (CendPOC) and between the nonalgal particulate absorption coefficient and terrestrial POC concentration (CterPOC). Second, based on the valid relationships, semianalytical retrieval models were established to estimate CendPOC and CterPOC. Third, the proportions of endogenous POC (RendPOC) and terrestrial POC (RterPOC) to the total POC concentration (CPOC) were derived using a three-band empirical model. Finally, CPOC was obtained by dividing CendPOC by RendPOC (RendPOC ≥ 0.5) or dividing CterPOC by RterPOC (RendPOC < 0.5). Validation with field data shows that our proposed algorithm can accurately derive CPOC (0–20 mg/L), with a root mean square deviation (RMSD), median bias (MB), median absolute percent difference (MAPD), and median ratio (MR) of 1.15 mg/L, −0.05 mg/L, 24%, and 0.98, respectively. Synchronous validation based on Sentinel-3/OLCI images confirmed the accuracy, with RMSD, MB, MAPD, and MR values of 0.41 mg/L, −0.16 mg/L, 28%, and 0.91, respectively. The algorithm was applied to ocean and land color sensor (OLCI) images to reveal the temporal and spatial variations in POC in Lake Taihu.

Turbidity Currents Can Dictate Organic Carbon Fluxes Across River‐Fed Fjords: An Example From Bute Inlet (BC, Canada)

AbstractThe delivery and burial of terrestrial particulate organic carbon (OC) in marine sediments is important to quantify, because this OC is a food resource for benthic communities, and if buried it may lower the concentrations of atmospheric CO2 over geologic timescales. Analysis of sediment cores has previously shown that fjords are hotspots for OC burial. Fjords can contain complex networks of submarine channels formed by seafloor sediment flows, called turbidity currents. However, the burial efficiency and distribution of OC by turbidity currents in river‐fed fjords had not been investigated previously. Here, we determine OC distribution and burial efficiency across a turbidity current system within Bute Inlet, a fjord in western Canada. We show that 62% ± 10% of the OC supplied by the two river sources is buried across the fjord surficial (30–200 cm) sediment. The sandy subenvironments (channel and lobe) contain 63% ± 14% of the annual terrestrial OC burial in the fjord. In contrast, the muddy subenvironments (overbank and distal basin) contain the remaining 37% ± 14%. OC in the channel, lobe, and overbank exclusively comprises terrestrial OC sourced from rivers. When normalized by the fjord’s surface area, at least 3 times more terrestrial OC is buried in Bute Inlet, compared to the muddy parts of other fjords previously studied. Although the long‐term (&gt;100 years) preservation of this OC is still to be fully understood, turbidity currents in fjords appear to be efficient at storing OC supplied by rivers in their near‐surface deposits.

The unravelling of radiocarbon composition of organic carbon in river sediments to document past anthropogenic impacts on river systems

As carriers of dissolved and particulate loads that connect continental surfaces to oceans, river systems play a major role in the global carbon cycle. Indeed, riverine particulate organic carbon (POC) is a melange of various origins characterized by their own 14C labeling. In addition, civil nuclear activities have brought new 14C source that remains poorly documented. We propose to unravel the Δ14C value of POC stored in a sedimentary archive collected downstream the most nuclearized European rivers (the Loire River). We postulate that riverine POC is a mixture of aquatic POC (which could be impacted by the liquid discharge from nuclear industry), terrestrial and petrogenic POC. With a combination of radiocarbon measurements, POC analyses and the palynofacies method, we assessed the respective Δ14C value of the POC origins. The gaps between the Δ14C values of the sedimentary POC and those of the atmosphere were the result of the dilution from dead-C, the freshwater reservoir effect imprinting the Δ14C of aquatic POC and the age and transit time of terrestrial POC within the catchment. Importantly, we consider that the unravelling of radiocarbon composition of riverine POC could be useful to determine either the transit time of material from source to sink, some past industrial or natural events, the resilience of the river system and milestones of the social and economic trajectory of a catchment. For the last three decades, riverine sediments could also act as a source of radiocarbon for the atmosphere.

Particulate organic carbon dynamics in the Gulf of Lion shelf (NW Mediterranean) using a coupled hydrodynamic–biogeochemical model

Abstract. The Gulf of Lion shelf (GoL, NW Mediterranean) is one of the most productive areas in the Mediterranean Sea. A 3D coupled hydrodynamic–biogeochemical model is used to study the mechanisms that drive the particulate organic carbon (POC) dynamics over the shelf. A set of observations, including temporal series from a coastal station, remote sensing of surface chlorophyll a, and a glider deployment, is used to validate the distribution of physical and biogeochemical variables from the model. The model reproduces the time and spatial evolution of temperature, chlorophyll a, and nitrate concentrations well and shows a clear annual cycle of gross primary production and respiration. We estimate an annual net primary production of ∼ 200 × 104 t C yr−1 at the scale of the shelf. The primary production is marked by a coast-slope increase with maximal values in the eastern region. Our results show that the primary production is favoured by the inputs of nutrients imported from offshore waters, representing 3 and 15 times the inputs of the Rhône in terms of nitrate and phosphate. In addition, the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) decomposition highlights the role of solar radiation anomalies and continental winds that favour upwellings, and inputs of the Rhône River, in annual changes in the net primary production. Annual POC deposition (27 × 104 t C yr−1) represents 13 % of the net primary production. The delivery of terrestrial POC favours the deposition in front of the Rhône mouth, and the mean cyclonic circulation increases the deposition between 30 and 50 m depth from the Rhône prodelta to the west. Mechanisms responsible for POC export (24 × 104 t C yr−1) to the open sea are discussed. The export off the shelf in the western part, from the Cap de Creus to the Lacaze-Duthiers canyon, represents 37 % of the total POC export. Maximum values are obtained during shelf dense water cascading events and marine winds. Considering surface waters only, the POC is mainly exported in the eastern part of the shelf through shelf waters and Rhône inputs, which spread to the Northern Current during favourable continental wind conditions. The GoL shelf appears as an autotrophic ecosystem with a positive net ecosystem production and as a source of POC for the adjacent NW Mediterranean basin. The undergoing and future increase in temperature and stratification induced by climate change could impact the trophic status of the GoL shelf and the carbon export towards the deep basin. It is crucial to develop models to predict and assess these future evolutions.

Eutrophication and lakes dynamic conditions control the endogenous and terrestrial POC observed by remote sensing: Modeling and application

The sources of particulate organic carbon (POC) determine its conversion, thereby playing an important role in the carbon cycle of lakes. Accurate estimation of the sources and dynamic characteristics of POC is important for understanding the migration and transformation of organic carbon. However, the synchronous observation of POC sources with large areas through remote sensing is still challenging because of the complex composition of POC and the optical conditions of inland lakes. In this study, a three-band (1/ Rrs (689)–1/ Rrs (717)) × Rrs (697)) empirical algorithm of POC sources was constructed based on remote sensing reflectance (Rrs(λ)) and the proportion of endogenous POC estimated from the field-measured stable isotope (δ13CPOC) values. The validation and calibration results of the three-band algorithm showed robust performance, with MAPE and RMSE of estimated values and measured values of 10% and 0.07, respectively. The three-band algorithm had good simulation results for the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI), Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), and Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) spectra. The POC sources estimated by the three-band algorithm suggest that the endogenous POC of Taihu Lake in August showed a decreasing trend from 2006 to 2019. The variation in terrestrial POC was slow and stable for both annual and monthly variations. The analysis of POC sources with total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), water temperature, and wind speed indicated that terrestrial POC was closely related to wind speed (r = 0.33, P < 0.001), while endogenous POC was significantly associated with TP (r = 0.6, P < 0.001), TN (r = 0.56, P < 0.001), and water temperature (r = 0.49, P < 0.001). The use of remote sensing algorithms to evaluate POC from different sources is convenient and effective; furthermore, it helps to better understand the carbon cycle in lacustrine ecosystems.

Source, transport and fate of terrestrial organic carbon from Yangtze River during a large flood event: Insights from multiple-isotopes (δ13C, δ15N, Δ14C) and geochemical tracers

Climate change-triggered episodic and intensive flood events are increasing in frequency globally; these events play a disproportionate role in the carbon cycle at land-ocean interfaces by influencing the delivery of terrestrial organic matter to the sea. However, the transport and burial of flood-driven terrestrial organic carbon (Corg) in river-dominated marginal seas remains poorly understood. Here, water column particles (surface, intermediate, and bottom layers) and surface sediments from the Yangtze River estuary system were collected during a large flooding event (>60,000 m3 s−1) for a multiproxy geochemical study. We analyzed N/C, δ13Corg, δ15N, F14C, grain size, and elemental (Al and Si) to characterize the sources, ages, and alterations of particulate organic carbon (POC) and sedimentary Corg from the river channel to the estuarine mixing zone to the continental shelf and fingerprint the fate of Corg burial in marine sediments.We found that terrestrial POC delivered by the Yangtze flood is characterized by low F14C (0.625 ± 0.002; Δ14C = −379.8 ± 2.3‰, 14C age = 4,135 yr before present (BP)) and δ13Corg (−27.1 ± 0.5‰) values and high δ15N (3.9 ± 0.6‰), and N/C (0.15 ± 0.01) values, and was adsorbed on fine-grained particles. Using a Bayesian-Monte Carlo simulation approach, we estimated that terrestrial POC is dominated by C3 plant detritus (42 ± 16% on average), followed by petrogenic organic carbon (33 ± 7%), and soil (26 ± 22%). Moving offshore, hydrodynamic sorting of lithogenic particles exerts first-order control on POC by selecting particles with unique signatures. Petrogenic organic carbon and aged plant debris associated with coarse-sized particles preferentially accumulated within the proximal delta, whereas POC derived from catchment soil and adsorbed on fine-grained particles was transported offshore along the sediment dispersion system. We estimated that, on average, 76 ± 18% of POC initially present in the water column is oxidized at the water column-seabed interface during seaward transport and constitutes a source of atmospheric carbon dioxide. In contrast, the stable form of the organic matter-aluminosilicate mineral association controls the preservation of the sedimentary Corg. Our results suggest that frequent flooding events in the near future will likely increase lithospheric Corg delivery to marine sediments and have the potential to promote petrogenic Corg burial efficiency in the river-dominated marginal seas and accelerate biospheric POC oxidation and CO2 release, thus generating a positive feedback to global warming.

The impacts of reservoirs on the sources and transport of riverine organic carbon in the karst area: A multi-tracer study

Reservoirs have been constructed as clean energy sources in recent decades with various environmental impacts. Karst rivers typically exhibit high dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations, whether and how reservoirs affect carbon cycling, especially organic carbon (OC)-related biogeochemical processes in karst rivers, are unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, multiple tracer methods (including fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM), ultraviolet (UV) absorption, and stable carbon (δ13C) and radiocarbon (Δ14C) isotopes) were utilized to track composition and property changes of both particulate OC (POC) and dissolved OC (DOC) along river-transition-reservoir transects in the Southwest China karst area. The changes in chemical properties indicated that from the river to the reservoir, terrestrial POC is largely replaced by phytoplankton-derived OC, while gradual coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) removal and addition of phytoplankton-derived OC to the DOC pool occurred as water flowed to the reservoir. Higher primary production in the transition area than that in the reservoir area was observed, which may be caused by nutrient released from suspended particles. Within the reservoir, the production surpassed degradation in the upper 5 m, resulting in a net DIC transformation into DOC and POC and terrestrial DOM degradation. The primary production was then gradually weakened and microbial degradation became more important down the profile. It is estimated that ~3.1–6.3 mg L−1 (~15.5–31.5 mg-C m−2 (~10–21%)) DIC was integrated into the OC pool through the biological carbon pump (BCP) process in the upper 5 m in the transition and reservoir areas. Our results emphasize the reservoir impact on riverine OC transport, and due to their characteristics, karst areas exhibit a higher BCP potential which is sensitive to human activities (more nutrient are provided) than non-karst areas.

Simultaneous inversion of concentrations of POC and its endmembers in lakes: A novel remote sensing strategy

Data on the concentration of particulate organic carbon (POC) and its endmembers provide a basis for the characterisation of lake biogeochemical cycles. Here, a novel remote sensing strategy (the SCPOC algorithm) was developed to determine total POC concentrations, as well as terrestrial and endogenous POC concentrations in lakes. This strategy provides a successful example for the combination of isotope tracer and remote sensing technology. First, we obtained the terrestrial and endogenous POC concentration at the sampling point based on isotope tracing technology. Afterwards, we established a relationship between the phytoplankton absorption coefficient and the endogenous POC concentration (Cend), and applied a semi-analytical algorithm to invert the Cend value. Finally, the POC source ratio model and Cend value were combined to obtain the POC concentration (CPOC) and terrestrial POC (Cter). The results of synchronisation verification based on ocean and land colour instrument (OLCI) images show that the SCPOC algorithm has high Cend, Cter, and CPOC inversion accuracy, with MAPE values of 26.07%, 30.43%, and 42.28%, respectively. In fact, the SCPOC algorithm not only improved the accuracy of lake POC mapping, but also fills the gap of optical retrieval of POC endmember concentrations. Additionally, data from the OLCI images indicated that the studied lakes were dominated by external POC. However, because of the greater contribution of algal blooms to POC, this dominant advantage weakens in summer, although the terrestrial organic carbon carried by rainfall runoff also affects lake POC composition. Different POC sources have different ecological roles in lakes, and the superior POC end-element estimation capability of the SCPOC algorithm can not only be used as a supplement to traditional tracing methods, but also provides accurate spatial data for lake management.

A study on the response of carbon cycle system in the Pearl River Estuary to riverine input variations

Abstract Human activities associated with estuaries have already affected estuarine carbon cycles and flows. Especially with rapid development and urbanization, widespread wastewater treatment plants in watersheds have altered the amounts and proportions of riverine nutrients and organic carbon, which has strongly impacted carbon dynamics and budgets in coastal oceans. In this study, a well-validated carbon cycle model was used to reveal the response of carbon dynamics to reasonable estimated disturbance to riverine inputs (i.e., nutrients, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC)) in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). Scenario results demonstrate the distinct response patterns and spatial variability of carbon dynamics. Specifically, with phytoplankton blooms and biological production closely linked to riverine nutrients, riverine nutrient alterations mainly impact photosynthesis in the PRE, especially in the lower part of the PRE. As DOC fuels bacterial respiration in the water column, heterotrophic respiration is particularly sensitive to riverine DOC disturbances. POC not only relates to light penetration in turbid estuarine waters, which impacts photosynthesis, but also undergoes deposition, which affects the biochemical reactions in the sediment. Thus, perturbations to riverine POC input led to significant changes in both biological production and sediment dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) release. Multiple linear regression results reveal that both net community production and sediment DIC release flux modulate the variations of air-sea CO2 flux in the PRE, which highlights the roles of terrestrial POC input and deposition in a shallow estuary. When delivered into the PRE, a high proportion of POC tends to be deposited and contribute to sediment DIC release or carbon sequestration, while a significant fraction of riverine DOC is transported offshore to shelf regions. This study underscores the impacts of intensive human activities on carbon cycle system in coastal oceans and the importance of terrestrial organic carbon reduction and nutrient control in upstream basins.

Routing of terrestrial organic matter from the Congo River to the ultimate sink in the abyss: a mass balance approach (André Dumont medallist lecture 2017)

We address the role of the Congo River sediment dispersal in exporting and trapping organic carbon into deep offshore sediments. Of particular interest is the Congo submarine canyon, which constitutes a permanent link between the terrestrial sediment sources and the marine sink. The Congo River delivers an annual sediment load of ~40 Tg (including 2 Tg of C) that feed a mud-rich turbidite system. Previous estimates of carbon storage capacity in the Congo turbidite system suggest that the terminal lobe complex accounts for ~12% of the surface area of the active turbidite system and accumulates ~18% of the annual input of terrestrial particulate organic carbon exiting the Congo River. In this paper, we extend the approach to the whole active turbidite depositional system by calculating an average burial of terrestrial organic matter in the different environments: canyon, channel, and levees. We estimate that between 33 and 69% of terrestrial carbon exported by the Congo River is ultimately trapped in the different parts of turbidite system and we evaluate their relative efficiency using a source to sink approach. Our carbon budget approach, which consider annual river discharge versus offshore centennial accumulation rates, indicates that about half of the total particulate organic matter delivered yearly by the Congo River watershed escapes the study area or is not correctly estimated by our deep offshore dataset and calculations.

Long‐Term Storage and Age‐Biased Export of Fluvial Organic Carbon: Field Evidence From West Iceland

AbstractTerrestrial organic carbon (OC) plays an important role in the carbon cycle, but questions remain regarding the controls and timescale(s) over which atmospheric CO2 remains sequestered as particulate OC (POC). Motivated by observations that terrestrial POC is physically stored within soils and other shallow sedimentary deposits, we examined the role that sediment storage plays in the terrestrial OC cycle. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that sediment storage impacts the age of terrestrial POC. We focused on the Efri Haukadalsá River catchment in Iceland as it lacks ancient sedimentary bedrock that would otherwise bias radiocarbon‐based determinations of POC storage duration by supplying pre‐aged “petrogenic” POC.Our radiocarbon measurements of riverine suspended sediments and deposits implicated millennial‐scale storage times. Comparison between the sample types (suspended and deposits) suggested an age offset between transported (suspended sediments) and stored (deposits) POC at the time of sampling, which is predicted by theory for the sediment age distribution in floodplains. We also observed that POC in suspended sediments is younger than the predicted mean storage duration generated from independent geomorphological data, which suggested an additional role for OC cycling. Consistent with this, we observed interparticle heterogeneity in the composition of POC by imaging our samples at the microscale using X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. Specifically, we found that particles within individual samples differed in their sulfur oxidation state, which is indicative of multiple origins and/or diagenetic histories. Altogether, our results support recent coupled sediment storage and OC cycling models and indicate that the physical drivers of sediment storage are important factors controlling the cadence of carbon cycling.

Runoff-driven export of terrigenous particulate organic matter from a small mountainous river: sources, fluxes and comparisons among different rivers

The land-to-ocean export and subsequent preservation of terrestrial particulate organic carbon (POC) in oceans represents a major carbon sink in the global carbon cycle. Small mountainous rivers (SMRs) are hotspots of this process; however, how the sources and fluxes of POC change during rain events in low-gradient SMRs and how they compare with those in steep SMRs are unknown. Here, we combined the bulk properties and lignin phenols to trace changes in POC sources and fluxes in a low-gradient SMR (stream gradient: 0.6%) in southeastern China. Our results were further compared with other SMRs to understand the geomorphological influences on the POC export from SMRs. The results indicated that POC sources changed from aquatic organisms and deep soils during low-flow periods to surface soils and plant debris during high-flow periods. The lignin concentration showed a significant positive relationship with the runoff, suggesting that hydrology played an important role in exporting terrigenous POC in low-gradient SMRs. We further estimated that approximately 22%, 56% and 79% of annual water, POC and particulate lignin were exported during high-flow periods, respectively. Furthermore, we found that with increasing water discharge, the magnitude of the lignin increase was greater in SMRs with smaller stream gradients. Our results suggest that the export of terrigenous POC from low-gradient SMRs is driven by hydrology and is more sensitive to rain events than that in steep SMRs.

Tracking spatio-temporal dynamics of POC sources in eutrophic lakes by remote sensing

Estimating the proportions of particulate organic carbon (POC) endmembers is essential to fully understand the carbon cycle, the function of aquatic ecosystems, and the migration of contaminants in eutrophic lakes. There is currently no effective remote sensing optical algorithm in the literature to solve this problem. In this study, a POC-source color index (SPOC) was constructed based on the terrestrial and endogenous POC ratios calculated from field-measured stable isotope (δ13CPOC) values. The SPOC algorithm traces the sources of POC by utilizing three spectral bands centered approximately at 560 nm, 674 nm, and 709 nm, covering the intrinsic optical information of different POC sources. At the same time, the SPOC algorithm shows good applicability to Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI), Medium-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) image data. The POC sources estimated using the algorithm and monthly OLCI data showed that from March 2018 to January 2019, the POC at the surface of Lake Taihu was mainly terrigenous. In addition, due to multiple factors such as algal blooms, plant physiology, river transport, regional rainfall, and carbon cycling, the distribution of POC sources exhibited strong spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Compared with other methods, it is more convenient to use remote sensing to identify the proportion of POC in different endmembers, which offers a more comprehensive understanding of the energy flows and material circulation in lakes.

Modern and late Pleistocene particulate organic carbon transport by the Amazon River: Insights from long-chain alkyl diols

The relative abundance of the C32 1,15 long-chain alkyl diol (LCD) is an emerging proxy for the input of riverine aquatic particulate organic carbon (POC) into coastal oceans. This compound has the potential to complement other established proxies reflecting riverine terrestrial POC input and allows for a more nuanced assessment of riverine POC export to coastal seas. The current understanding of this proxy is, however, limited. In this study, we compare different indices for riverine sediment input to coastal marine waters (i.e. C32 1,15-LCD, BIT index and Fe/Ca ratio) in a source-to-sink assessment in the Amazon River drainage system and the northeast South American continental margin, and we test their down-core applicability in a marine gravity core containing late Pleistocene fluvial Amazonian sediments. We show that the relative abundance of the C32 1,15-LCD is highest in water bodies with low flow velocity and low turbidity such as the downstream portion of lowland tributaries and floodplain lakes. Relative C32 1,15-LCD abundance is lowest in Andean white water tributaries where autotrophic productivity is hindered by high turbidity and high flow velocity. We also find that suspended particulate matter from all major tributaries during the extreme 2015 dry season has a similar LCD distribution to that of floodplain lakes. This indicates that the chemical composition of the tributaries is less relevant for the LCD distribution than their physical properties such as flow velocity and turbidity. Results from marine surface sediments offshore the Amazon River estuary show significant positive correlations between all three studied proxies. In contrast, we find that the relative C32 1,15-LCD abundance in the down-core record is anti-correlated to the BIT index and Fe/Ca ratio. While BIT index and Fe/Ca ratio show high (low) values during Heinrich stadials (Dansgaard-Oeschger interstadials), the C32 1,15-LCD proxy shows the opposite signal. BIT values are also higher during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2 than during MIS 3, in contrast to trends in the C32 1,15-LCD proxy. We posit that this pattern arises from a reduction in relative C32 1,15-LCD abundance and total LCD productivity in the Amazon River during MIS 2 when less-humid conditions and lower sea level led to reduced area of floodplains. During Heinrich stadials, Andean sediment input increased and led to higher turbidity that resulted in lower C32 1,15-LCD production. Our study shows that major changes in water discharge, sediment transport and river morphology can lead to discrepancies between the BIT index and the relative abundance of the C32 1,15-LCD. Thus, we suggest that Amazonian aquatic and terrestrial POC pools had contrasting responses to changes related to both climate (e.g. increased Andean precipitation) and river morphology (e.g. steeper along-channel slope due to falling and low stand sea level).

Plant detritus is selectively consumed by estuarine copepods and can augment their survival

Particulate material comprising the detrital remains of terrestrial plants and macrophytes is a substantial source of organic matter to estuaries and therefore has the potential to support the energy demands of the pelagic aquatic food web. Despite the prevalence of macrophytic or terrestrial particulate organic carbon (tPOC), phytoplankton are nutritionally superior and are thought to be the primary food resource for zooplankton. However, estuarine phytoplankton primary productivity abundances can wax and wane, and often production cannot meet heterotrophic energy needs. In this study, we examined how tPOC (detritus of macrophytes and grasses) may affect survival of a calanoid copepod (Eurytemora affinis) common in the San Francisco Estuary (SFE), an estuary with relatively low phytoplankton primary productivity. Using chemical biomarkers and a targeted DNA metagenomic methodology, we show that E. affinis consumed tPOC (dominated by Schoenoplectus sp., or tule) even when phytoplankton were abundant and tPOC was scarce. Furthermore, we found that a mixed diet of phytoplankton and terrestrial material (1:3 carbon ratio) enhanced the survival of E. affinis over a diet of phytoplankton alone. These data show that tPOC can be a vital supplementary food source for zooplankton, perhaps extending survival during low phytoplankton periods, and may help explain elevated zooplankton abundances in tidal wetlands and other detrital-dominated regions.
