There is considerable information available about remote site work and telecommuting. However, little information is available about how such a program can be implemented. This paper contains a design outline for a telecommuting program and the guidelines needed for the selection of related projects, personnel, and managers. It also proposes systems for monitoring the pilot project and evaluating the results. This study is based on research of other workers and on the results obtained from a carefully controlled longitudinal study of telecommuting at the Textron Lycoming Division of Textron Corporation at Stratford, CT hereinafter referred to as Textron. Results are tabulated for three major areas of the study: the workstation hardware and software; communications between the telecommuter subject of the study and the project management at the plant; and finally, the morale of the telecommuter.
