This paper examines a number of domains and methodological contexts within which social values are investigated. The epistemic and methodological characteristics of these two types of areas of investigation—the former differentiated historically, and the latter chosen deliberately—are analysed. The analysis is done within an explicit conception of methodology—and of social values. The methodological contexts distinguished are: populations, situations of interaction, bounded collectivities, institutional structures and discourses. It is argued that life-worlds are natural and everyday life-and-living spaces and not exceptional or distinct methodological contexts. Methodological aspects examined include: conceptualisation, procedures and techniques of empirical substantiation, theorising, micro and macro investigations, and methodological equity.
