Exploring Transversal Green Skills Required Of Technology Graduates For Environmental Sustainability

The main aim of this study is to explore transversal green skills required of technology graduates for environmental sustainability. Thematic analysis was used for this study. Cluster sampling technique was used to sample four states out of seven states mentioned in the area of the study and all the 18 technical colleges and 6 building construction firms in the four sampled states in north western Nigeria were used. Purposive sampling was used to select 27 experts based on their working experience and educational qualification in building construction to participate in the qualitative segment of this study. For the qualitative section, interview guide/protocol was developed based on the specific objectives of the research. It was made up of 3 open-ended questions designed to obtained sufficient information on the area of transversal green skills considered appropriate for the study. To ensure reliability of qualitative result of this research, two procedures were followed; member checking and peer debriefing. For the validity of the findings of this study, the researchers used member checking to determine the accuracy of the findings. The results of the data obtained from the interview was analyzed and interpreted using transcription, coding, thematic, content analysis and categorization. The findings for this study include Reflective Thinking Skills, Presentation Skills, Resourcefulness Skills and Application Skills. The study recommends that Federal and state Governments should via NBTE adopt and ensure proper implementation of this findings for technology graduates at technical colleges in Nigeria with the aim of achieving environmental sustainability.

Occupational health coaching for job stress management among technical college teachers: Implications for educational administrators.

The need for stress management strategies has been empirically investigated and supported considering demands in workplaces. However, some people in public offices do not seem to have been exposed to occupational health strategies that could reduce the adverse impacts of stress on job productivity and quality of life. Consequently, they become susceptible to mental health disturbances requiring the attention of occupational therapists. Given this, we studied the impact of occupational health coaching for job stress management among technical college teachers. Using a randomized control design study, 90 technical college teachers were screened and ready to participate. The eligible teachers were included and assigned to intervention and control groups. An occupational stress index was given to the participants before, immediately after, and 2 months after the delivery of occupational coaching program by career counselors while the comparison group received no intervention. Data collected were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance analysis. The results showed a significant improvement in the management of job stress after receiving rational emotive occupational health coaching. According to the multivariate analysis of variance analysis, there were between-group differences immediately after the intervention and 3 months later. As a result, the study suggested that career counselors and school management systems should incorporate rational-emotive behavioral therapy into workforce and workplace programs.

Perceived impact of mentoring programme on job satisfaction and performance among metalwork teachers

The study determined the perceived impact of mentoring on job performance and satisfaction among metal work teachers in North-West, Nigeria. A quasi-experimental design was used for the study. The sample was made up of 35 teachers drawn from four technical colleges in North West, which comprise of 16 teachers in the experimental group and 19 teachers in the control group. A questionnaire was used for data collection. Three experts validated the instrument and the reliability coefficient was 0.93. The experimental group received the mentoring programme which adapted the four stages of Krams model while the control group was trained with an unplanned and informal method. A pre-test was administered a week before the experiment to both groups followed by the treatment that lasted for 13 weeks. Similarly, post-test was administered to both groups two weeks after the treatment. ANCOVA was used to test the hypothesis. The findings revealed a significant impact of mentoring on job performance and satisfaction, but no significant influence of gender was observed. Hence, it was recommended that technical colleges in Nigeria should adopt the use of mentoring for improving metal work teachers job performance and satisfaction.

Assessment of Public-Private Partnership in Technical Colleges in Nigeria: A Case of Lagos State

Abstract
 This study examined the state of Public-Private Partnerships in technical colleges in Nigeria, using Lagos state as a case study. Four research questions guided the study. It was a cross-sectional descriptive study adopted a mixed method research design. The population of the study comprised of all the 350 academic staff in the five government technical colleges in Lagos state. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 50 teachers. Questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used to collect data. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to answer research questions one, two and three while descriptive narratives were used to analyse interview responses. Cronbach alpha technique was used to determine the reliability of the questionnaire and a coefficient of 0.69 was obtained.The finding indicated that public-private partnerships existed partially as a strategy for funding technical colleges in Lagos for skills acquisition. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that colleges may set up a partnership committee to liaise with industries; government should do away with making of obnoxious policies that discourage private organisations; and National Board on Technical Education may make business grant cum start-up loan available for the graduates of technical colleges.

Teachers emotional intelligence to predictive work performance using linear and non-linear models

Aim: Teachers’ job performance has been impacted by rapid changes and reforms in educational systems around the world. Despite these advancements, the debate about how to forecast teacher success remains complicated and difficult to assess. The role of emotional intelligence in teacher success is investigated in this research, which fills a void/gap in the literature. The relationship between Emotional Intelligence (EI), which has four dimensions: self-regulations, self awareness, self-motivation, and social ability (relationship management), and job performance is examined in this research.Methodology: 160 teachers from six technical colleges in Nigeria’s north-east were polled. The data was gathered through a questionnaire survey, and analyse using artificial intelligence model (FFNN, LSSVM, NF and MLR).Findings: The models were assessed using determination coefficient (R2), root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (R). the result obtained from the simple models showed that neuro fuzzy sub clustering hybrid (NF-SCH) shows (R2 = 0.8814502 and 0.8375132) both training and testing, the correctness of models has been improved which increase accuracy of the single models up to 17%, 18%, and 20% FFNN, MLR and LSSVM for calibration and up to 40%, 73% and 70% FFNN, MLR and LSSVM for verification respectively the results show a strong connection between emotional intelligence and work satisfaction.Implications/Novel Contribution: Overall, this study adds to the body of knowledge on emotional intelligence by having practical management implications for school administrators and the Nigerian higher education system.

Integration of Automobile Mechatronics Technology into the Curriculum of Automobile Trades Programmes at the Technical Colleges in Nigeria

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of automobile industries workshop craftsmen in relation to the integration of automobile mechatronics technology into the curriculum of automobile trade programmes in technical colleges in Nigeria. Three research questions guided the study. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study is 31 comprising 23 automobile industries workshop craftsmen who are currently working in automobile companies in Enugu state, and eight (8) automobile trades’ technical teachers in technical colleges in Enugu state. A structured questionnaire titled Instrument for Integrating Automobile Mechatronics Sub-systems (IIAMS) was used for data collection. Two experts from the Department of Industrial Technical Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and one expert from Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company (ANAMCO) face validated the instrument. The reliability co-efficient of the instrument was found to be 0.87 using Cronbach Alpha. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation for the research questions, while t-test was used to test the null hypotheses. The results of the study indicate that that automobile craftsmen find difficulties in servicing some automobile mechatronics sub-systems, while 16 mechatronics sub-systems were agreed on to be integrated into the automobile curriculum. It was recommended that these mechatronics sub-systems should be integrated into technical college curriculum and that technical colleges should partner with automobile industries for effective training of craftsmen. The study will contribute positively to the understanding of automobile mechatronics technology, and how it can be integrated into the curriculum.

Achieving Sustainable Development Goals 2016-2030 in Nigeria through Female Enrolment into Electrical/Electronics Engineering Trade in Technical Colleges of Adamawa State

Purpose: This study investigated female enrolment into electrical/electronics engineering trade in technical colleges of Adamawa State in order to suggest ways of augmenting it for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2016-2030.
 Approach/ Methodology/ Design: Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The sample of the study comprised of 38 teachers and 140 parents. A 50-item Female Enrolment in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Trade (FEEET) Questionnaire was developed by the researchers and used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by three experts from the Department of Electrical Technology Education, Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola, Adamawa State. Reliability co-efficient of 0.81 was obtained for the instrument using Cronbach’s Alpha reliability method. Mean statistic was used to answer the two research questions while z-test statistics was used to test the two hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance.
 Findings: The findings of the study revealed that inadequate knowledge on female participation in electrical/electronics engineering trade, hazards involved in working with electricity, and poor gender policy implementation among others were factors affecting female enrolment into the programme. Establishment of electrical/electronics engineering trade skill acquisition centres for females and provision of starter packs for female graduates of electrical/electronics engineering trade among others were strategies identified for improving female enrolment into the programme. 
 Practical Implication: The study has practical implications for achieving sustainable development goals in Nigeria. A sustainable financing scheme for the female trainees of electrical/electronics engineering trade should be established in order to boost their interests in the programme.
 Originality/Value: The study identified that inadequate knowledge on female participation in electrical/electronics engineering trade, hazards involved in working with electricity, societal perception about electricity, cultural sanctions on women, early marriages, and poor gender policy implementation are the main factors that affect female enrolment in technical colleges in Nigeria.

Effectiveness of Constructivism Instructional Method on Students’ Psychomotor Achievement, Problem-Solving and Retention in Mechanical Engineering Craft Practice in Technical Colleges

The poor academic achievement of students in technical colleges in Nigeria has been a major concern to researchers. It is believed that the application of effective instructional methods in technical colleges could enhance overall students’ academic achievement. This demands that teachers in technical colleges should adopt instructional methods that could enhance overall achievement particularly in students’ psychomotor, problem solving achievement and enhance retention in mechanical engineering craft practice in technical colleges. The study investigated the effectiveness of constructivism instructional method on students’ psychomotor achievement, problem-solving and retention in mechanical engineering craft practice in technical colleges in Delta State. Three research questions guided the study and three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted the quasi-experimental research design. Population of the study was 97 vocational II mechanical engineering craft practice (MECP) students in the six technical colleges in Delta State. A sample of 82 was used for the study. Instruments for data collection were Mechanical Engineering Craft Practice Achievement Test (MECPAT) and the lesson plans for the experimental and control groups. The instruments- MECPAT and lesson plans; were face and content validated by three experts, two from the Department of Technology and Vocational Education and one from Measurement and Evaluation Unit of the Department of Educational Foundation; all in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. Test–retest method was used to establish reliability of MECPAT and was calculated using Pearson Product Moment Correlation which yielded a correlation coefficient value of 0.87. Arithmetic mean was used to analyze data relating to research questions and while analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses. Findings revealed that students taught mechanical engineering craft practice using constructivism instructional method performed better, possessed requisite problem solving skills and had better knowledge retention than those taught with lecture teaching method (LTD). Based on the findings, it was concluded that constructivism instructional teaching method (CITM) is an effective and efficient mode of instruction with capacity of improving students’ learning outcome, problem solving techniques and retention ability level. Consequently, it was recommended among others that technical teachers should use constructivism instructional method in teaching mechanical engineering craft practice so as to enhance students’ psychomotor achievement in subsequent public examination.

Effect of Computer-Assisted Instruction on Students’ Academic Achievement and Retention of Auto-mechanics Technology in Technical Colleges

The poor achievement of students in technical colleges in Nigeria has been a major concern to researchers. The use of effective instructional method in technical colleges will enhance students' academic achievement. This demands that teachers in technical colleges would adopt instructional methods that would improve the achievement of students in auto-mechanics technology in technical colleges. The study investigated the effect of computer-assisted instruction on students' academic achievement and retention in auto-mechanics in technical colleges. Three research questions were answered and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Quasi-experimental design was used for the study. Population of the study was 128 National Technical Certificate (NTC) year 1 Auto-Mechanics students in state owned technical colleges. Purposive sampling technique was used to draw four schools out of the six technical colleges with 101 students for the study. Instruments for data collection were Auto-Mechanics Achievement Test (AMAT). The instrument was face and content validated by three experts. Test–retest method was used to establish its reliability and was calculated using Pearson product moment correlation which yielded a correlation coefficient value of 0.81. Treatment procedure of computer–assisted instruction (CAI) and demonstration teaching method for the study was carried out. Arithmetic mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses. Findings of the study revealed that students taught auto-mechanics using CAI achieved significantly higher and retained knowledge better than those taught using demonstration teaching method. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that CAI positively affects students' academic accomplishment and retention ability in the subject auto-mechanics. It was found more compelling, effective, rewarding and valuable in teaching of auto mechanics at technical colleges. Consequently, it was recommended among others that technical teachers should use CAI in teaching auto-mechanics in order to enhance students' academic achievement and retentionability. Therefore, auto-mechanics teachers should ensure constant and effective utilization of CAI for instruction in trade subjects/courses in technical colleges to improve students' achievement and knowledge retention.e

The Impact of Assessment Techniques on the Relationship Between Work-Based Learning and Teamwork Skills Development

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of assessment techniques on the relationship between work-based learning and teamwork skills development at technical colleges in Nigeria. The sample consists of 257 technical teachers. The CFA models were developed to obtain the Chi-square values, modification indices, and standardized estimates using AMOS. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), employing AMOS version 22 was utilized to test the mediation effect and also the relationship between work-based learning and teamwork skills development among students of technical colleges. The findings of the study revealed that work-based learning has a direct significant negative relationship with teamwork skills development among students of technical colleges, while, it has a direct insignificant positive relationship with assessment techniques. However, when the mediation hypothesis was tested, the result indicates that assessment techniques have a significant positive indirect impact on teamwork skills development, that is, it fully mediates the relationship between work-based learning and teamwork skills development among students of technical colleges. This study implies to educators that there is a need to appropriately enforce the assessment techniques for effective development of teamwork skills among TVET students. It is therefore, confirmed that teamwork skills should be enhanced when work-based learning is used in collaboration with appropriate assessment techniques.

Assessment of Possessed Generic Green Skills for Green Jobs of Electrical Installation and Maintenance Work Graduates of Technical Colleges in Nigeria

The purpose of this study is to uncover employers’ assessment of possessed generic green skills for green jobs of electrical installation and maintenance work graduates of technical college in Nigeria. The study used 120 out of 140 employers of technical College Graduates in Adamawa State. The instrument used for the data collection was a questionnaire. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze research data. The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The findings reveal that, in the rewinding of electrical machines modules of electrical installation and maintenance work, technical college graduates have adequate skills to work in the industry except in few areas like: conduct of preventive maintenance and testing faults in electrical filing machines’ winding, the ability to locate faults in electrical filing machines’ winding, carrying out insulation resistance test, interpreting drawings of electrical equipment where they showed averagely adequate and slightly adequate skills. Similarly, from the data obtained and analyzed, the result indicates that the graduates have adequate skills in industrial installation except in few areas like: Ability to handle power transmission equipment and components, maintain simple power tools, to test simple power tools, to interpret drawings of electrical equipment, to read symbols. Therefore, the researchers concluded that technical college graduates have adequate technical skills for green jobs and to work in the industries.

Integrating Entrepreneurship Skills across Radio, Television and Electronic Work Trade Curriculum in Technical Colleges in North-Western Nigeria

New trends in curricula emerge globally where two or more courses of study are blended to produce a single curriculum. Countries like Finland and Jordan practiced embedded curricula in order to promote learning and reduce numerous courses of study. This qualitative study explores the integration of entrepreneurship skills (ES) across the curriculum of Radio, Television and Electronic Work trade curriculum in North-Western Nigeria. Based on the perceptions of two strata of stakeholders (entrepreneurship teachers and Radio, Television and Electronic Work curriculum planners), the feasibility and desirability of embedding entrepreneurship skills across Radio, Television and Electronic Work trade curriculum in selected technical colleges were analyzed after conducting a preliminary study. Document analysis and semi-structured interview were used as the methods for data collection. The findings show that cross-curricula entrepreneurship skills remain non-existent in technical colleges in Nigeria, largely because its implementation is not captured in technical disciplines. However, the study points out the importance of embedding entrepreneurship skills into Radio, Television and Electronic Work trade curriculum for wealth creation and employment generation among technical college graduates. In addition, the five stages of integrating curriculum adopted from the lifelong learning model were briefly discussed. The components of entrepreneurship skills discovered in the study included: entrepreneurial awareness, starting and operating a business, business ideas and opportunities, characteristics or traits of entrepreneurs, and self and paid employment among others. Donor support and retraining needs of trade teachers were also highlighted as complementary factors for enhancing the implementation of embedded curriculum in Nigeria. The findings of this study can be applicable to technical colleges in Nigeria especially in Radio and Television Trade.

The Impact of Generic Skills on Building Technology Graduates’ Employability

Stressing the generic skills among learners is an essential component of producing graduates who would be employable and highly competitive in the world of work situations. This study empirically examined the influence of soft skill elements on building technology graduates’ employability at technical colleges in Nigeria. The study tested six hypotheses on soft skill elements influencing building technology graduates’ employability. Data were collected through personal-administered questionnaire from 314 building technology teachers at technical colleges in the north-western States of Nigeria. The instrument was embraced from an earlier study and distributed to Building technology teachers at technical colleges in North West, Nigeria. The results revealed through Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis that ICT skills, and resource management skills have a significant positive relationship with building technology graduates’ employability while personal skills and problem-solving skills have a positive but insignificant relationship with building technology graduates’ employability at technical colleges in Nigeria. It is recommended that teachers or academicians should come out with more interactive ways to develop soft skills among students at every stage to make them become more employable hence, avert them from being unemployed in the future.

Improving graduate outcomes for technical colleges in Nigeria

This study examined key issues affecting the effective management of carpentry and joinery workshops for improving the quality of graduates of technical colleges in Nigeria. Drawing upon data collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 27 technical colleges teachers and 13 craft trainers, plus a focus group, this study adopts a mixed methods approach. The survey was conducted in technical colleges in Enugu and Ebonyi States of eastern Nigeria; hence, this study cuts across single geographical boundaries. The patterns of responses among respondents suggested that poor student academic performance result from lack of equipment, funding, and support for technical colleges by the government, whereas effective management of workshops promoted learning and student discipline. The study addressed issues for how workshop success can be promoted.

CORRELATION BETWEEN THE FIVE PERSONALITY DIMENSIONS AND CREATIVE BEHAVIOURS OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS TEACHERS IN NIGERIAN TECHNICAL COLLEGES

This study determined the correlations between the five personality dimensions and the creative behaviours of electrical and electronics teachers in Nigerian Technical Colleges. Multiple prediction research design was adopted for the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 94 electrical and electronics teachers from a population of 137 persons teaching electrical and electronics trades in the 21 technical colleges in North-western Nigeria. The data for the study were collected using two instruments: Kaufman Domains of Creativity Scale which consists of 50 items in which participants rated themselves on a scale of 1 to 5 in comparison to other people in their age and experience, and Goldberg’s Big Five Inventory which is a 44 item, five point Likert scale type of; Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Neutral, Agree, and Strongly Agree. To account for socio-cultural differences, the instruments were subjected to a pilot study in Niger State, North-central Nigeria, and their reliability coefficients were found to be 0.86 and 0.83 respectively. The data were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression. Results revealed that there is a correlation between the five personality dimensions when treated together and the creative behaviours of electrical and electronics teachers. Also, the personality dimensions treated together significantly correlate with the creative behaviours of the teachers. It was concluded that personality traits are important for creative behaviours of trade’s teachers. Hence, a reward and incentive systems should be put in place, for the encouragement of creativity among electrical and electronics teachers in technical colleges in Nigeria.

The Effect of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy on Irrational Career Beliefs of Students of Electrical Electronics and Other Engineering Trades in Technical Colleges in Nigeria

Irrational beliefs are factors that can explain students’ emotional and/or pragmatic problems. Irrational career beliefs are career myths, maladaptive cognitions and inaccurate beliefs regarding career and the work world which impact negatively on career decision-making. The present research investigated the effectiveness of rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) on irrational career beliefs of students of electrical electronics, automobile trade, building/woodwork and mechanical trades in technical colleges in Nigeria. Using a pretest–posttest control group, 173 participants were assessed quantitatively at four time points. One-way ANOVA, repeated-measures ANOVA and paired sample t test were utilized for analysis of data. Posttest results indicated that the irrational career beliefs of the REBT participants declined significantly compared to a waitlist control group. Furthermore, results of both 3- and 6-months follow-up evaluations showed that the significant reduction in irrational career beliefs of the REBT participants was maintained. Therefore, supporting interventions which aim to promote functional career beliefs and thoughts among the citizens, beginning from the early school years to the graduate school level and in the workplaces, should be considered a top policy issue in Nigeria. Further studies are needed to examine whether exposing students to an REBT program can lead to less anxiety related to career decision-making and improved career self-efficacy beliefs.

Negative career thoughts are cognitive barriers that interfere with an individual's career decision-making and successful career development. The current study examined the effect of rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT) on negative career thoughts of students in technical colleges in Nigeria. The study utilized a pretest-posttest control group design. One hundred and seventy-three participants from technical colleges in the Southeast zone of the country completed a measure of career thoughts at pretest, posttreatment, and follow-up: the College Students' Career Thoughts Scale. An REBT career program manual guided the intervention for 12 weeks. Data collected were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance, chi-square, and t-test. Results show that the negative career thoughts of the REBT group participants were significantly reduced relative to a waitlist control group at the end of the intervention. Follow-up tests conducted after three months and six months revealed that the significant decrease in negative career thoughts of the REBT group participants was sustained. The outcomes of the current study suggest that REBT is an invaluable group therapy for assisting college students in overcoming negative thoughts associated with career choice and decision. It would be helpful if further longitudinal evaluation were implemented in Nigeria and in other countries to evaluate whether and how an REBT-based program can improve vocational maturity and vocational identity of technical college students.
