Large Area Synthesis of Vertical Aligned Metal Oxide Nanosheets by Thermal Oxidation of Stainless Steel Mesh and Foil.

We report here the synthesis of metal oxide nanosheets (MONs) directly grown on stainless steel substrates by thermal oxidation in the presence of trace amounts of water. The morphology and microstructure of MONs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The composition of MONs was determined by the energy dispersive system and X-ray diffraction patterns. The results showed that the as-synthesized MONs were ultrathin, vertically aligned, and mostly transparent. They were polycrystalline and were composed primarily of Cr2O3 and (Fe, Mn)3O4. The optimal condition to synthesize the MONs with an optimal ultra-high surface atom ratio were determined by varying the temperature and time required for the growth of the MONs. It was found that the lateral size of MONs gradually increases as the temperature rises from 1000 to 1100 °C. An optimal temperature of 1100 °C is obtained in terms of the growth density, size and transparency degree growth morphology, and quality. The structure of MONs changes from two-dimensional to three-dimensional networks when the synthesis time is prolonged to more than 1 h.

Generalized Synthesis of Metal Oxide Nanosheets and Their Application as Li-Ion Battery Anodes.

Metal oxide nanosheets have attracted great attention in various fields, such as energy storage, catalysis, and sensors. Current synthesis methods of metal oxide nanosheets are laborious and not scalable. Herein, a facile and scalable method for the synthesis of metal oxide nanosheets is presented, which requires neither hydro-/solvothermal conditions nor postsynthesis template removal. The synthesis is versatile, as evidenced by the wide variety of metal oxide nanosheets derived. Nanosheet properties such as crystallinity, crystallite size, and carbon content can be controlled by tuning the synthesis conditions. The metal oxide nanosheets demonstrate promising performance as Li-ion battery anodes.

Synthesis and Characterization of Surface‐Functionalized Layered Titanate Nanosheets Using Lamellar Self‐Assembly as a Template

AbstractThe synthesis of metal oxide nanosheets using a lamellar phase as a template effectively modified the nanosheets because surfactant molecules surround the entire surface of the nanosheets. Here, we show the development of layered titanate nanosheets with a lamellar mesostructure. The layered titanate nanosheet forms by using the lamellar self‐assembly of cationic dodecanediamine as a template and an electrostatic interaction between negatively charged titanate nanosheets and positively charged 1,12‐dodecanediamine during hydrothermal synthesis. This approach leads to titanate nanosheets with new properties such as visible light absorption and a high adsorption of cationic organic compounds, which results in the effective photodegradation of Rhodamine B under visible‐light irradiation. This approach has important implications for the use of metal oxide nanosheets in environmental and industrial applications.
