Abstract Operational personnel deployment and order sequence planning are important tasks of production management in order to identify and utilize existing potential in day-to-day business. This paper provides a methodology to support production management via the joint application of discrete-event simulation and production control. The evaluation of action alternatives is done by comparing the calculated contribution margin.

The Bernoulli Assembly Line: The Analytical and Semi-Analytical Evaluation of Steady-State Performance

Assembly lines are one of the cornerstones of modern production systems, significantly affecting the global society, economy, and other ancillary sectors. This is why the evaluation of assembly lines is particularly significant. Hence, the research on modeling approaches is presented in this paper, yielding an efficient mathematical tool that enables the evaluation of the steady-state performance of assembly lines at low CPU cost. First, the analytical model and the transition matrix were developed for the general case, and second, dimensionality issues and demanding computational requirements were tackled by applying the finite state method. Both approaches were employed in different theoretical cases in order to validate the finite state method against the analytical solution. Additionally, the developed evaluation framework was applied in the case of a realistic assembly system, and the obtained results were successfully validated against the factory floor measurements. The comparison of the obtained results proves the finite state method as a reliable and CPU-efficient method, suitable for the evaluation of its key performance indicators as well as implementation within more sophisticated design procedures. This kind of predictive analytics is intended to support production management and enhance the reliability of long- and short-term decision-making in the context of the digital twinning of production systems.

A Scalable Framework for Telehealth: The Mayo Clinic Center for Connected Care Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: The Mayo Clinic Center for Connected Care has an established organizational framework for telehealth care delivery. It provides patients, consumers, care teams, and referring providers access to clinical knowledge through technologies and integrated practice models. Central to the framework are teams that support product management and operational functions. They work together across the asynchronous, synchronous video telemedicine, remote patient monitoring (RPM), and mobile core service lines.Methods: The organizational framework of the Center for Connected Care and Mayo Clinic telehealth response to the COVID-19 pandemic is described. Barriers to telehealth delivery that were addressed by the public health emergency are also reported. This report was deemed exempt from full review by the Mayo Clinic IRB.Results: After declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was rapid growth in established telehealth offerings, including patient online services account creation, secure messaging, inpatient eConsults, express care online utilization, and video visits to home. Census for the RPM program for patients with chronic conditions remained stable; however, its framework was rapidly adapted to develop and implement a COVID-19 RPM service. In addition to this, other new telehealth and virtual care services were created to support the unique needs of patients with COVID-19 symptoms or disease and the health care workforce, including a digital COVID-19 self-assessment tool and video telemedicine solutions for ambulances, emergency departments, intensive care units, and designated medical–surgical units.Conclusion: Rapid growth, adoption, and sustainability of telehealth services through the COVID-19 pandemic were made possible by a scalable framework for telehealth and alignment of regulatory and reimbursement models.

5S system as a manner for improving working conditions and safety of work in a production company

Abstract Currently entrepreneurs have the opportunity to use many methods and tools that support production management, quality and improvement of working safety. A method worth paying attention to is the 5S method, which brings order and discipline to the workplace. The article presents practical aspects of the implementation of the 5S method using five simple steps that give the real benefits to a company. Particularly the specific solutions that can be applied at every stage of the implementation of the 5S method is indicated. Also innovative ways of conducting internal audits are presented. In addition, a model for the implementation of the 5S concept was proposed, which supports maintaining the healthy standards at a high level. It has been pointed out that the implementation of 5S rules must be constantly monitored and improved. Therefore, supervision and motivational activities are particularly important, especially from the side of leaders and managers represented an organization.

Pests and diseases diagnostic mobile tool “m-WHEAT” for wheat crop in Ethiopia

Information is power only when used and applied. Farm Management Information Systems in agriculture have evolved from simple farm recordkeeping into sophisticated and complex systems to support production management. African agriculture is largely traditional and practised by smallholders and pastoralists, predominantly rain-fed, has low-yielding production, and lacks access to critical information, market facilitation, and financial intermediation services. The role that Information Communication Technologies (ICT) can play in addressing these challenges is increasing. Mobile technology, on the other hand, is increasingly being adopted as the technology of choice for delivery of ICT services and solutions. New apps present an opportunity like no other to revolutionize life for farmers. The mobile is not only a communication tool, in future, it will be an important agricultural tool for the farmers. Most mobile apps focus on improving agriculture and have a wide range of functions, such as providing market information, increasing access to extension services, and facilitating market links. For extension workers, it is an additional tool in their kit in the technology transfer. For scientists, it acts as a readily available reference on demand and for students in agriculture, it acts as a learning tool. Mobile app for pest and disease management of crops is an app that allows farmers to identify pests and diseases using their mobile phones and provides remedial measures is the latest addition to using modern digital tools to benefit smallholder farmers. Ethiopia is the largest wheat producer in Sub-Saharan Africa. Wheat is the 4th important cereal crop in the country. Although Ethiopia is the largest wheat producer in Sub-Saharan Africa, it is reliant on foreign wheat imports to satisfy its annual domestic demand. Considering its importance, and also in recent years the crop was affected by rust disease and incurred significant economic loss, wheat crop was selected for this pilot study. Keeping this in to consideration, the mobile application namely, m-WHEAT, was developed, as a pests and diseases diagnostic tool for major pests and diseases of Wheat crop in Ethiopia. The application is developed using android with the help of Extensible Markup Language (XML) for encoding documents in machine-readable form and includes java development tools. The XML based user interface with Java programming in Android SDK is developed to present pests and diseases of wheat and its control measures.

A Mixed Integer Linear Programming Model for End of Life Vehicles Recycling Network Design

Automotive industry, with both its contributions to the technology and values added to the economy, has been indisputably one of the leading sectors. As the demand and interest in automobile grow, the environmental pollution caused by the automobiles increases correspondingly. In addition to automobiles’ carbon emissions, also the vehicles which have completed their life cycle, namely scrap vehicles, cause environmental pollution due to their solid and liquid waste. In developed countries, a regulation has been made in order to prevent the situation from getting worse. According to this regulation, in order to support product management, manufacturers are obliged to take back and recycle all their vehicles which have completed their life cycle. The regulation started to be implemented after being adapted to the national law. Upon its adaptation to our national regulations, it has been enforced in our country as well. In the study, Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model has been presented to design end of life vehicles recycling network. The proposed model has minimized the total network cost as well as to determine the amount of material transported between the facilities and to decide whether to open the dismantling and shredding facilities. The presented model has been applied to end of life vehicles recycling network design problem in Istanbul. The proposed model gives suitable and cost effective results for end of life vehicles recycling network in Istanbul.

Farm management information systems: Current situation and future perspectives

Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS) in agriculture have evolved from simple farm recordkeeping into sophisticated and complex systems to support production management. The purpose of current FMIS is to meet the increased demands to reduce production costs, comply with agricultural standards, and maintain high product quality and safety. This paper presents current advancements in the functionality of academic and commercial FMIS. The study focuses on open-field crop production and centeres on farm managers as the primary users and decision makers. Core system architectures and application domains, adoption and profitability, and FMIS solutions for precision agriculture as the most information-intensive application area were analyzed. Our review of commercial solutions involved the analysis of 141 international software packages, categorized into 11 functions. Cluster analysis was used to group current commercial FMIS as well as examine possible avenues for further development. Academic FMIS involved more sophisticated systems covering compliance to standards applications, automated data capture as well as interoperability between different software packages. Conversely, commercial FMIS applications targeted everyday farm office tasks related to budgeting and finance, such as recordkeeping, machinery management, and documentation, with emerging trends showing new functions related to traceability, quality assurance and sales.

Hybrid Discrete Event Simulation and Virtual Reality Experimental Setup for Construction Management Research

Given the difficulties with isolating cause and effect in field experiments, and the inadequacy of discrete event simulations (DESs) for the purpose of evaluating crew leaders’ experience and performance, a novel experimental approach was sought that would provide the benefits of DES but would nevertheless allow observation of the behavioral aspects. Correlation Analysis of TSUNAMI Phenomena and Failure Rate Fluctuation in Manufacturing System

Tremendous growth of the home information appliances requests semiconductor manufacturing to respond High Product Mix and Low Production Volume condition. Such condition in manufacturing operations challenges production management to have rapid improvement activities in an environment with uncertain productivity and demand. In this research Visualized Coefficient of Variation Analysis (VCVA) was applied to measure fluctuations in the flow of production material on a time-line basis. Based on this approach a monitoring tool was developed and implemented in a wafer manufacturing system and an assembling system to support production management in root cause analysis and productivity improvement. Results show the effectiveness of the method by visualizing TSUNAMI phenomena, as a typical case of Butterfly Effect in the material flow fluctuation, by identifying the root cause equipment as the source of productivity detractor, and by revealing significant relationship between material flow fluctuation and failure rate fluctuation.

CONSTRUCTING SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING PERFORMANCE INDEXES AND APPLYING DATA MINING FOR MANUFACTURING DATA ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT The indexes for semiconductor manufacturing management are complicated and interrelated. Therefore, it is hard to clarify the relationships among the indexes and to derive useful rules for production management. Existing approaches rely on following individual indexes without considering the production system as a whole. This study aims to fill the gap by reviewing the related studies on semiconductor manufacturing management and developing a complete set of performance indexes in hierarchy. In addition, we apply data mining techniques for analyzing production data collected in a semiconductor fab in Taiwan to validate this approach. The empirically derived patterns among the critical indexes were useful for supporting production management decisions. The results demonstrate the practical viability of this approach. This study concludes with results and discussion on future research.

FROM THE EOQ TO THE e-ERP. IMPACT ON THE ORGANISATION

In the Industrial Engineering there has been an evolution of methods, techniques and tools used to support production management through the 20th century, this paper tries to illustrate. Changes began from the classical method for stock management, well suited for goods with independent demand. Nowadays several concepts have allowed the information integration, methods and procedures in a single system known as ERP. ERPs can cover all the functions in industries on the way to reach the goals fixed by strategic planning. Obviously all these changes have notably shaped the current business structures, and helped to improve the daily management.

Contribution to the Definition of a Communication Structure Based on MMS in a Production Management context

Abstract Production management creates many information exchanges within the workshop. The communication system distributes information to the different entities communicating in the workshop. The scope of this paper is the workshops with communication structures using the MMS messaging. Based on the study of production management information systems, the purpose is to propose a communication structure allowing to support production management in the workshop by integrating informations characteristic of this context to its equipments. The considered equipment is a workstation resource type.

A computer based approach for enhancing manufacturing decision making in smaller manufacturing enterprises: A longitudinal study

Earlier research led to the development of a microcomputer based generic package to support production management decisions for the smaller manufacturing enterprise (SME). This was developed using a fourth generation language (4GL), supported by a relational database. It was designed in such a way that it met the majority of the needs of the SME for production planning and control and could readily be modified to meet user specific requirements. The system was based on a general model of the production process. This paper reports the results of a longitudinal study involving implementation within one particular SME and a different mode of operation in a second company. Each step involved in the introduction was fully documented. It demonstrates the evolution of the usage, which developed from a program which is being used essentially to track transactions to a system which was being used to support and extend major production decision making. This study illustrates the use of the system as a ‘change agent’, supported by an action learning environment. This is facilitated by the sound production management practice embodied within the software, which enables organizations to improve the quality of production management decisions. The two stages in the implementation are considered from the standpoint of existing organizational learning and decision making theories.
