Green supply chain knowledge networks and corporate ESG performance: the role of green technology innovation and knowledge integration capability

This paper examines the relationships between knowledge networks and corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance within the context of green supply chain management (GSCM). While knowledge accumulated by enterprises implementing GSCM can effectively enhance ESG performance, constructing knowledge networks among these enterprises may lead to more significant performance improvements. On the basis of the knowledge-based theory, social network theory, and dynamic capabilities theory, this paper adopts the structure-conduct-performance framework, selects Chinese A-share listed enterprises implementing GSCM as its research subjects, and utilises these enterprises’ green patents to construct green supply chain knowledge networks. It empirically investigates the relationships among green supply chain knowledge networks, green technology innovation, knowledge integration capability, and ESG performance. The results show that the structural characteristics of the knowledge network positively affect ESG performance and that the relational characteristics exhibit an inverted U-shaped relationship with ESG performance. Green technology innovation mediates the relationship between knowledge network characteristics and ESG performance. Furthermore, knowledge integration capability positively moderates the relationship between knowledge network characteristics and green technology innovation. These findings enrich the research on social network theory and other related theories, providing new insights for enterprises to improve ESG performance.

Environmental, social, and governance disclosure in supply chains: a systematic literature review

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure has garnered growing interest from both academia and practitioners. Despite this growing interest, significant gaps persist in understanding the motivations behind ESG disclosure, specific practices, and the consequences it causes from a supply chain management (SCM) perspective. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic literature review of 64 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2000 and 2024. Using the belief–action–outcome framework, our review identified several SCM-related beliefs that drive firms’ ESG disclosures. We also detailed specific practices and outcomes at the supply chain level. Additionally, the review synthesized various SCM-related enablers and barriers to ESG disclosure. Finally, we integrated these insights into a conceptual framework and developed a research agenda to explore ESG further within the SCM context. This research represents the first comprehensive review to systematically analyze ESG disclosure with SCM, making a significant contribution to the ESG in the SCM research stream and laying a robust foundation for future studies.

Overcoming technological barriers for blockchain adoption in supply chains: a diffusion of innovation (DOI)-informed framework proposal

PurposeThe integration of blockchain technology (BT) in supply chain management (SCM) is at the forefront of technological advancements, yet it faces significant barriers that hinder its widespread adoption. This study aims to delve into these challenges, employing the diffusion of innovations (DOI) theory to systematically investigate and propose a strategic framework for overcoming the technological barriers to BT adoption within SCM.Design/methodology/approachThrough a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) of 155 publications, complemented by rigorous content analysis and expert interviews, this research identifies and categorizes 16 primary technological barriers, including scalability and privacy issues, that impede BT integration.FindingsThe proposed framework, informed by DOI theory, outlines tailored strategies across three critical adoption stages: initiation, where the focus is on mitigating high energy consumption and scalability issues; adoption decision, emphasizing the formulating international standards for blockchain architecture, embedding abstraction layers within software projects; and implementation, concentrating on enhancing security, interoperability and system efficiency.Originality/valueThis research contributes significantly to both academic literature and practical applications. Academically, it extends the DOI theory within the SCM context and enriches the blockchain literature by providing a nuanced understanding of the specific barriers to BT adoption. Practically, it offers a roadmap for industry practitioners, delineating actionable strategies to navigate the adoption process effectively. This study not only bridges the gap between theoretical insights and practical implementations but also serves as a vital resource for policymakers and standard-setting bodies in facilitating and regulating BT adoption in SCM, thereby fostering innovation and competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Supplier Carbon Management and Firm Idiosyncratic Risk: Empirical Evidence From China

ABSTRACTAlthough existing research emphasizes the importance of internal carbon management (CM) in influencing firm risk, the impact of external stakeholder CM on firm risk remains unclear. This study employs signaling theory to explore how supplier CM affects firm idiosyncratic risk (IR), alongside the moderating roles of the supply chain information environment and the criticality of firm–supplier relationships. The findings of this study demonstrate that supplier CM can reduce firm IR. The risk reduction effect is strong when the information environment between a firm and its suppliers is rich and when the dependency between the firm and its supplier is strong. Path analysis reveals that supplier CM primarily reduces firm IR by alleviating information asymmetry. Moreover, the risk reduction effect increases for firms with small sizes. This research extends the application of signaling theory to supply chain research and bridges the gap between the CM and firm IR literature within the context of supply chain management.

Occupational Risk Management for a Sustainable Workplace Using Simulation

Purpose of the article: The primary objective of the article is to introduce a novel approach to occupational risk management that leverages advanced digital technologies and simulations. It aims to address the existing research gap by developing a method that considers dynamic environmental factors and individual worker needs. By analyzing the synergy of various hazards, monitoring employee workload, and employing simulations, the article seeks to enhance the accuracy of occupational risk assessment and facilitate more effective corrective actions. Research methods: The article employs a mixed-method research approach, drawing upon both theoretical analysis and practical application. It begins with a thorough literature review to establish the theoretical framework and identify research gaps. Subsequently, it discusses the proposed solution – a method for managing occupational risks using simulation – by presenting its theoretical description and implementation process. The research methodology involves the development and application of this method to a selected order picking process, followed by simulation to minimize occupational risks. The authors also utilize software tools to simulate work processes and assess health risks to workers. Main findings: The main findings of the research suggest that occupational risk assessment using simulation has a significant impact on improving work processes in terms of sustainable workplaces. By introducing elements of labor humanization and redesigning work processes, the study demonstrates a reduction in the sources of occupational risk. The innovative approach to risk assessment, based on recursion across different organizational resources, facilitates the identification of improvement action projects. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of digitalization and Industry 4.0 technologies in monitoring working conditions, identifying risks, and implementing preventive measures. Overall, the research contributes to shaping new standards for safe and sustainable work environments, thereby enhancing both safety and efficiency within organizations.

This study explores the strategic integration of risk management and Human Resources (HR) practices within the context of supply chain management, aiming to identify how such integration enhances organizational resilience and sustainability. Employing a systematic literature review and content analysis, the study examines scholarly articles from key databases, focusing on the period from January 2000 to the present. The methodology involves a comprehensive search strategy, stringent inclusion and exclusion criteria, and a detailed selection process to distill insights from relevant literature. Key findings reveal that strategic HR practices, such as talent management, leadership development, and fostering a risk-aware culture, significantly contribute to mitigating supply chain risks and bolstering resilience. Furthermore, the study highlights the pivotal role of technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things, in supporting the dynamic integration of risk management and HR practices. This integration not only addresses operational efficiencies but also aligns with strategic objectives towards sustainability and adaptability in the face of global disruptions. Impact of digital transformation misalignment on supplier financial risk

PurposeDigital transformation misalignment refers to disparities in digital transformation levels between suppliers and buyers across the production and operation process. It has negatively affected supply chain stability. However, the existing research concerning the economic consequences has not been adequately addressed. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate whether such digital transformation misalignment increases supplier financial risk and to identify the factors influencing this relationship.Design/methodology/approachThis paper examines binary combinations of suppliers and buyers listed on China’s A-share market between 2011 and 2021. This group constitutes a sample to empirically test the influence of digital transformation misalignment on the supplier’s financial risk, as well as the moderating effect of the geographical and organizational distances.FindingsThe paper’s findings demonstrate that digital transformation misalignment has indeed a significant increase in the supplier’s financial risk. Moreover, the impact is more intense when the geographical or organizational distance between the supplier and the buyer is relatively large.Originality/valueThe existing literature rarely explores the potential risks arising from digital transformation misalignment between supply chain partners. Therefore, this paper fills a notable gap as it is the first to study the impact of digital transformation misalignment on the supplier’s financial risk and the specific applied mechanisms. The contribution significantly improves the field of corporate digital transformation, particularly, within the context of supply chain management.

The Internet of Things has the potential to address limitations in certain aspects of SCM, such as monitoring, production management, logistics operations efficiency, information exchange and communication, supply chain modeling, intelligent information collection, and security. The advent of IoT technology has ushered in a new era in logistics. The paper examines the current application areas and future prospects of this technology. Challenges encountered in implementation underscore the need for further refinement of IoT technology. Despite these obstacles, experts contend that the crux lies not in issues of costs, standards, and techniques, but in the establishment of a viable business model in the SCM and logistics industries.

Impact of Airline Service Quality and Safety Perception on Airline Brand Loyalty: Mediating Role of Passenger Expectation

This research aims to examine the influence of airline service quality and safety perception on brand loyalty. Furthermore, passenger anticipation employed as mediating variable for in-depth research. In order to achieve the goal of this research, data were gathered from a sample of 384 customers who use airline services. The convenient sampling approach was employed for data collection. The findings from the structural equation modelling revealed that brand loyalty has a considerable impact on the evaluation of airline services quality and safety perception. Additionally, the study identified the important mediating function of passenger expectation. This research assists the authorities and managers in the airline sector in formulating effective and efficient strategies to meet customer demand and cultivate brand loyalty.

Theorizing across boundaries: How to conduct a ‘breakout’ literature review

AbstractBest practice advice for literature reviews abounds, yet little advice is available for how to infuse a literature review with theory‐generative insights that break out of knowledge silos. To address this issue, we provide guidance on reviewing a range of literature for theory‐generative insights through a process of knowledge transfers from a source domain onto a target domain. To do so, mainly building on work concerned with analogical reasoning, we put forward a ‘breakout’ review model, which consists of three iterative stages. While we illustrate the process model in a supply chain management context, we aim to assist any organizational scholar interested in exploring cross‐disciplinary literature for new ways of thinking.

Logistics Performance And Other Factors As Antecedents Of The Sustainability Performance Of G-20 Countries

Logistics directly affects the growth and development of a nation, making it a vital component of economic development (Hofman, 2017). Numerous studies have established a direct link between a country's economic progress and its logistics performance. This relationship encompasses various dimensions, including economic, developmental, environmental, and social aspects. Within the context of sustainable supply chain management, the environmental and social aspects are often highlighted (Seuring and Muller, 2008; World Bank, 2007, 2018; United Nations, 2010; OECD, 2011; World Economic Forum, 2015).The logistics industry has a significant impact on environmental and social issues and consumes a substantial amount of energy resources, leading to high carbon emissions (Rashidi and Cullinane, 2019). Thus, efforts to reduce carbon emissions are crucial. Initiatives such as developing adequate infrastructure like highways to reduce travel time and waiting times at ports for container unloading are essential. Elevating the competency and quality of logistics services also plays a role in improvement, as logistics professionals contribute not only to material movement but also support marketing functions, product development, pricing, and customer service. In Indonesia, a G-20 member, the logistics sector contributes significantly to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, challenges related to infrastructure and environmental impact need to be addressed. In this regard, the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) published by the World Bank serves as a valuable tool to assess logistics performance and promote sustainability. Within the context of sustainability performance, this research aims to analyze the influence of Logistics Performance and other factors on sustainability performance in G-20 countries, with a focus on Indonesia. LPI data and other relevant indicators are employed to identify the effects of these variables on sustainability performance. The study is expected to offer insights for practitioners and organizations to take steps towards improved sustainability performance while also contributing theoretically to the field.

A Smarter Way to Procure: Exploring the Use of Smart Contracts

Purpose:This article delves into the transformative potential of smart contracts in revolutionizing procurement within supply chain management, with a special focus on the healthcare industry. In line with the challenges posed by complex procurement processes, the study explores how self-executing digital contracts can enhance efficiency, security, and transparency. Theoretical framework:The article is grounded in the concept of smart contracts and their applications in procurement, serving as a bridge between emerging technology and supply chain management innovation. It draws upon an extensive body of literature and research related to smart contracts, supply chain management, and technology adoption. The study is designed to build upon this theoretical foundation, using two comprehensive case studies to provide real-world insights and practical applications. These case studies, situated within the healthcare industry, serve as tangible examples of how the theoretical concepts surrounding smart contracts manifest in actual procurement processes. Design/methodology/approach:To investigate the application of smart contracts in healthcare procurement, we employed a qualitative research approach. This encompassed an extensive literature review of academic papers, industry reports, and relevant articles, uncovering the unique advantages and challenges in procurement & supply chain management. Building upon these findings, we developed a groundbreaking smart contract-based procurement system, presented through sequence diagrams. To validate our solution, we implemented and rigorously tested it within a real-world Ethereum environment. Findings:Our research reveals that integrating smart contracts into procurement processes results in streamlined operations, diminished reliance on intermediaries, and heightened transparency and traceability. Moreover, the proposed solution showcases significant potential for enhancing procurement efficiency in the healthcare sector. Research, Practical & Social Implications: These findings present valuable insights with far-reaching implications and hold substantial implications for stakeholders. Healthcare organizations can harness smart contracts to optimize their procurement procedures, yielding improved efficiency, transparency, and security. In a rapidly digitalizing landscape, our research empowers companies to maintain their competitive edge while delivering enhanced value to partners and customers. Originality/value:This article contributes significantly to the existing literature by offering a comprehensive examination of smart contract integration within procurement function, set within the broader context of supply chain management. To change the dreadful tag of hazardous production, top-notch fast fashion leaders started paying attention towards adopting sustainable practices, including sustainable supply chain management (SSCM).This paper conducts a structured review of the annual reports on the topic of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability practices adopted by fashion brands in the supply chain management context. This study tries to identify the factors and classification influencing energy efficiency and environmental sustainability initiatives that impact supply chain performance, the customer perspective and the different technologies supporting energy efficiency and sustainable practices based on the analysis of the data related to the sustainability of top fashion brands from their past five year annual reports.

Big data optimisation and management in supply chain management: a systematic literature review

The increasing interest from technology enthusiasts and organisational practitioners in big data applications in the supply chain has encouraged us to review recent research development. This paper proposes a systematic literature review to explore the available peer-reviewed literature on how big data is widely optimised and managed within the supply chain management context. Although big data applications in supply chain management appear to be often studied and reported in the literature, different angles of big data optimisation and management technologies in the supply chain are not clearly identified. This paper adopts the explanatory literature review involving bibliometric analysis as the primary research method to answer two research questions, namely: (1) How to optimise big data in supply chain management? and (2) What tools are most used to manage big data in supply chain management? A total of thirty-seven related papers are reviewed to answer the two research questions using the content analysis method. The paper also reveals some research gaps that lead to prospective future research directions.

MODELING STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR SUSTAINABLE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

This paper proposes a knowledge-based customer-centric strategic model to respond to environmental challenges and achieve sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) in the supply chain management (SCM) context. The proposed model strives to leverage knowledge-based distinctive core competencies (DCCs) to improve customer satisfaction and achieve SCA. An exploratory research design has been adopted. The study undertook a systematic literature review approach with 36 articles or books published between 1970 and 2020 to construct the strategic planning model. The paper presents an integrated multi-dimensional model for SCM, including value chain activities, competitiveness strategies, business process re-engineering (BPR), and SCA. The practical result of the article is to develop a theoretical strategic planning model for SCM as a holistic framework for using the company’s DCCs and creating an SCA in a highly competitive and dynamic business environment. The proposed model comprehensively covers the supply chain (SC)’s competitive advantage strategy. For businesses that tend to adapt and triumph, the proposed model helps reduce order cycle times, reduce inventory levels, increase accuracy and efficiency, reduce costs, and improve customer service and satisfaction.

Exploring the potential of blockchain-enabled lean automation in supply chain management: a systematic literature review, classification taxonomy, and future research agenda

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how Blockchain Technology (BCT) can support the implementation of Lean Automation. We conducted a systematic literature review to understand how BCT is being implemented in the supply chain management (SCM) domain and to evaluate how this technology can be used to reduce inefficiencies in supply chains. Firstly, we developed a holistic taxonomy of wastes to identify the most common non-value activities. Then, both inductive and deductive content analyses were performed, the latter being coded using the taxonomy. Our findings identified the most common BCT-based application themes in SCM and ways that this technology can be used to support future implementation of Blockchain-enabled Lean Automation (B-eLA). Additionally, we proposed a future research agenda. The study provides important contributions at the intersection between BCT, lean production, and Industry 4.0 within the context of SCM and seeks to exploit BCT’s potential to improve businesses’ efficiency, effectiveness and productivity.

Potential effects of smart innovative solutions for supply chain performance

The study aimed at exploring the impact of three smart innovative solutions, i.e., Internet-of-Things, Big Data Analytics, and Cloud Computing on supply chain performance. Collecting data by questionnaires administered to a sample consists of supply chain managers of industrial firms. The results pointed out that these three smart solutions significantly and positively lift firms’ supply chain performance. That is, the hypotheses that Internet-of-Things, Big Data Analytics, and Cloud Computing have significant impacts on supply chain performance were supported. Therefore, the study concluded that for industrial firms to improve supply chain performance, such smart solutions should be assessed and applied. The study contributes to both academics and practitioners through providing empirical results on concurrent impacts of three advanced technologies in supply chain management context.

Stakeholder roles in sustainable supply chain management: a literature review

Since ecological deterioration and social discrepancy are intensifying, multiple stakeholders are driving companies to incorporate sustainability in their supply chains. Thus, integrating non-traditional supply chain stakeholders, such as non-governmental organizations and competitors, in supply chain practices is essential for achieving a more sustainable supply chain. Hence, this research aims to show how stakeholders and their roles are related to sustainable supply chain management practices. A systematic literature review including 78 peer-reviewed English journal articles published between 2000 and 2020 was conducted. The results suggest that multiple supply chain external and internal stakeholders drive, facilitate, or inspect the implementation of sustainable supply chain management practices. While governmental and non-governmental organizations are key drivers for implementing sustainable supply chain management practices, they can also support their implementation. Moreover, proactive engagement with external supply chain stakeholders facilitates the organizational learning process through capability development, increasing understanding and awareness of sustainability, and creating knowledge. This study strengthens the value of proactive and collaborative measurements to deal with stakeholder issues before putting pressure on a company, which can result in reputation and legitimacy loss. These insights enrich the theoretical debate while explaining stakeholders’ relevance and roles in the sustainable supply chain management context. However, the study has some limitations regarding the chosen sustainable supply chain management and stakeholder constructs and potential within-study bias, offering possibilities for further research.
