Orbital-angular-momentum-based optical clustering via nonlinear optics

Machine learning offers a convenient and intelligent tool for a variety of applications in the fields ranging from fundamental research to financial analysis. With the explosive growth of data streams, i.e., “big data,” optical machine learning with the inherent capacity for massive parallel processing is gradually attracting attention. Despite significant experimental and theoretical progress in this area, limited by the coherent manipulation of multibeams, high dimensional optical vector or matrix operation is still challenging. Here, by using the second harmonic generation of high dimensional orbital angular momentum superposition states, we present a compact and robust optical clustering machine, which is the crucial component in machine learning. In experiment, we conduct supervised clustering for classification of three- and eight-dimensional vectors and unsupervised clustering for text mining of 14-dimensional texts both with high accuracies. The presented optical clustering scheme could offer a pathway for constructing high speed and low energy consumption machine learning architectures.

Using molecules as a quantum interface to store ultrashort optical vortices

We exploit gas-phase molecules as light-matter interface to store an orbital angular momentum (OAM) or a superposition of OAM states (OAM-based photonic qubits) carried by ultrashort laser pulses. The interplay between spin angular momentum and OAM is exploited to encode the amplitude and spatial phase information of light beams into rotational coherences of molecules. This last is restored on-demand over tens of picoseconds with a reading beam by taking advantage of field-free molecular alignment. The underlying mechanism at the origin of the storage can be interpreted by the spatial structuring of the molecular sample induced by the field. The excitation indeed produces an inhomogeneous spatial distribution of molecular alignment (amplitude & orientation) whose periodical revivals associated with the quantum beatings of the rotational wavepacket enables to restore the spatial beam structure on-demand. The strategy is successfully demonstrated in CO2 molecules at room temperature. Besides applicability as storage medium with THz bandwidth application, the use of molecules as light-matter interface opens new functionalities in terms of optical processing and versatile control of OAM fields.

Orbital angular momentum superposition states in transmission electron microscopy and bichromatic multiphoton ionization

The coherent control of electron beams and ultrafast electron wave packet dynamics have attracted significant attention in electron microscopy as well as in atomic physics. In order to unify the conceptual pictures developed in both fields, we demonstrate the generation and manipulation of tailored electron orbital angular momentum (OAM) superposition states either by employing customized holographic diffraction masks in a transmission electron microscope or by atomic multiphoton ionization utilizing pulse-shaper generated carrier-envelope phase stable bichromatic ultrashort laser pulses. Both techniques follow similar physical mechanisms based on Fourier synthesis of quantum mechanical superposition states allowing the preparation of a broad set of electron states with uncommon symmetries. We describe both approaches in a unified picture based on an advanced spatial and spectral double slit and point out important analogies. In addition, we analyze the topological charge and discuss the control mechanisms of the free-electron OAM superposition states. Their generation and manipulation by phase tailoring in transmission electron microscopy and atomic multiphoton ionization is illustrated on a 7-fold rotationally symmetric electron density distribution.

Polarization controllable generation of flat superimposed OAM states based on metasurface.

In this paper, two kind of metasurface-based flat orbital angular momentum (OAM) superposition-state generators are proposed, which can generate OAM superposition states possessing tens of OAM modes being evenly spaced by topological charge number 1. The power spectra of the generated OAM superposition states are flat. The power variation of the OAM modes of the OAM superposition states from one generator is less than 3 dB, and the power variation of the OAM modes of the OAM superposition states from the other one is less than 0.3 dB. By controlling the left-handed and right-handed circular polarization states of the incident light, the OAM spectra of the OAM superposition states generated in the two polarization cases are separated from each other, therefore, the proposed generators are light polarization controllable. In addition, the two generators can operate efficiently on a wide wavelength region ranging from 635nm to 730nm. Our work may have some potential applications, such as used for OAM multicasting, OAM based optical manipulation, or manufacturing integrated OAM-superposition-state generators and OAM modulation devices.

Multichannel Metasurface for Simultaneous Control of Holograms and Twisted Light Beams

In terms of system integration and device miniaturization, a single optical device that can possess more tunable functionalities in multiple channels is desirable. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate such an ultrathin optical device that can simultaneously realize polarization-controllable hologram and superposition of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in multiple channels. By continuously controlling the polarization state of the incident light, the polarization-dependent holographic images in two channels along the horizontal direction and the continuous control of OAM superposition in two channels along the vertical direction are realized. The uniqueness of the device lies in that both the superpositions of OAM states and the holographic images are controlled at the same time. Generation of photonic orbital angular momentum superposition states using vortex beam emitters with superimposed gratings

An integrated approach to produce photonic orbital angular momentum (OAM) superposition states with arbitrary OAM spectrum has been demonstrated. Superposition states between two vector OAM modes have been achieved by integrating a superimposed angular grating in one silicon micro-ring resonator, with each mode having near equal weight. The topological charge difference between the two compositional OAM modes is determined by the difference between the numbers of elements in the two original gratings being superimposed, while the absolute values of the topological charge can be changed synchronously by switching WGM resonant wavelengths. This novel approach provides a scalable and flexible source for the OAM-based quantum information and optical manipulation applications.

Time-division multiplexing of the orbital angular momentum of light

We present an optical setup for generating a sequence of light pulses in which the orbital angular momentum (OAM) degree of freedom is correlated with the temporal one. The setup is based on a single q plate within a ring optical resonator. By this approach, we demonstrate the generation of a train of pulses carrying increasing values of OAM, or, alternatively, of a controlled temporal sequence of pulses having prescribed OAM superposition states. Finally, we exhibit an "OAM-to-time conversion" apparatus that divides different input OAM states into different time bins. The latter application provides a simple approach to digital spiral spectroscopy of pulsed light.

Measurement of the quantum superposition state of an imaging ensemble of photons prepared in orbital angular momentum states using a phase-diversity method

We propose the use of a phase-diversity technique to estimate the orbital angular momentum (OAM) superposition state of an ensemble of photons that passes through an optical system, proceeding from an extended object. The phase-diversity technique permits the estimation of the optical transfer function (OTF) of an imaging optical system. As the OTF is derived directly from the wave-front characteristics of the observed light, we redefine the phase-diversity technique in terms of a superposition of OAM states. We test this new technique experimentally and find coherent results among different tests, which gives us confidence in the estimation of the photon ensemble state. We find that this technique not only allows us to estimate the square of the amplitude of each OAM state, but also the relative phases among all states, thus providing complete information about the quantum state of the photons. This technique could be used to measure the OAM spectrum of extended objects in astronomy or in an optical communication scheme using OAM states. In this sense, the use of extended images could lead to new techniques in which the communication is further multiplexed along the field.
