Translational reconstruction of iconicity: a corpus-based cognitive stylistic study on the acoustic narration in the English translations of Can Xue’s fiction

Abstract As an important representative of contemporary Chinese avant-garde, Can Xue’s fiction has a unique language style. The use of onomatopoetic reduplications is one of the major linguistic means of her acoustic narration, which is often closely associated with sound-related metaphoric mappings, shifting of narrative viewpoints and so on in the fiction. By comparing various ways of construal and stylistic choices made by different English translators of Can Xue’s fiction based on the comparative and parallel corpus, it is found out that transliteration of onomatopoetic reduplications is an effective means of reconstructing iconicity in acoustic narrative, which can not only enrich foreignized sensory experiences of readers but also make them accept the language and culture of the “other” in a better way. This also reflects the translator’s creative and personalized cognitive style.

Restoration and Representation of Yoruba Culture in the Lion and the Jewel: A Stylistic Study

This study examines the stylistic restoration and representation of Yoruba culture in Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel, focusing on how linguistic choices serve as vehicles for cultural preservation and dramatic expression. Through detailed analysis of the play’s language, the study demonstrates how Soyinka creates a sophisticated dramatic idiom that successfully bridges traditional Yoruba cultural expression and modern theatrical conventions. The study identifies and analyses several key linguistic phenomena, including Yorubanised English, character-specific linguistic patterns, ritual language, and gender-linked discourse. The analysis reveals how different characters’ linguistic choices reflect their positions in the cultural conflict between tradition and modernity, with a particular emphasis on Lakunle’s affected modernism, Baroka’s traditional authority, and female characters’ strategic manipulation of linguistic forms. The study demonstrates how Soyinka’s stylistic choices create a “cultural-linguistic palimpsest” where multiple layers of meaning and cultural reference coexist within single utterances. Gender relations are shown to be mediated through sophisticated linguistic strategies. The findings indicate that successful cultural representation in drama requires the use of new dramatic idioms, which accommodate both traditional and modern modes of expression, and maintain artistic coherence. This study contributes to understanding how dramatic language can serve as a vehicle for cultural preservation while creating compelling theatrical experiences, suggesting new approaches to analysing the intersection of language, culture, and dramatic form in postcolonial contexts. A Critical Stylistic Study of Rhetorical Devices in Selected American Confessional Poems

خصصت هذه الدراسة لتحليل الأساليب البلاغية في مختارات من قصائد اعترافية أمريكية. تركز الدراسة على انواع الأدوات البلاغية التي استخدمت في أربع قصائد اعترافية مختارة للشاعرة آنا سيكستون. تهدف الدراسة إلى التعرف على أنواع الادوات البلاغية والسمات الأسلوبية لمثل هذه الأنواع من الادوات البلاغية. تعتمد هذه الدراسة على المنهج النوعي للتحليل وقد استخدمت نظريات ليج (1981) و ليج و شورت (2007) لتحليل البيانات المختارة التي تحتوي على أربع قصائد لآنا سيكستون. وبعد تحليل هذه القصائد أظهرت النتائج أن القصائد المختارة تحتوي على أشكال مختلفة من الادوات البلاغية مثل الاستعارة والسخرية والتشخيص والتشبيه التي تعتمد عليها الشاعرة في الاعتراف بعواطفها ورغباتها. ويلاحظ أن هذه الأدوات البلاغية المستخدمة في القصائد المختارة لها سمات أسلوبية محددة. وتشمل هذه السمات؛ استخدام فئات معجمية مختلفة مثل استخدام الأسماء والأفعال والصفات والضمائر وأشكال مختلفة من التراكيب النحوية بما في ذلك؛ الجمل البسيطة والمركبة والمعقدة والمركبة المعقدة. تتضمن هذه الأدوات البلاغية أيضًا استخدام ادوات التماسك النصي والترابط. وتشمل ادوات التماسك النصي استخدام الضمائر، وأدوات العطف، والتكرار، والضمائر والحذف

The Treatment of Nature in Arabic Andalusian Poetry: A Stylistic Study of Selected Translated Poems

This stylistic study tackles the depiction of nature in Arabic Andalusian poetry during the Almohad, Almoravid, and Taifa kings periods in Al-Andalus. This study relies on the analytical and theoretical approaches of Russian Formalism that focus on studying the linguistic aspects of literary concepts and texts. The study’s significance stems from its purpose of introducing a stylistic study of some Andalusian poems that were composed in the standard Arabic language. These poets represent nature aesthetically, specifically in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain) in different poetic styles, such as muwashah, zajal, and malta…etc. these selected poets believe that being in nature is the ideal way to find peace and enjoyment. Furthermore, they highlight the fact that nature and humans are essentially suited to one another and that the human mind is a mirror that reflects the natural world happily.

A Critical Stylistic Analysis of Extremism in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus (2003)

This study conducts a critical –stylistic study of Adichie’s purple Hibiscus a Nigerian-American Novelist. It concentrates on portraying the concept of extremism by using a sophisticated linguistic frame work. Applying Jeffries’ textual conceptual model of analysis which includes ten tools of analysis .The study adopts ten extracts from the chosen novel that corresponds specifically the concept ideology of extremism .In this study, the researcher adopts a qualitative methodology of analysis of the selected extracts to uncover the implication of all ten tools of the model are applied with special emphasis on some devices such as contrasting ,representing ,states and actions .The effective use of language by Adichie which is indicated by the findings of the analysis. The analysis highlights the inherited contradictions in extremist ideologies focusing on destructive effects on individual and society.Adichie motivates the readers to critically engage by employing certain techniques such as describing, naming and negation in order to investigate the radical legitimacy of extremism. Finally the Purple Hibiscus addresses a deep critique of extremism and illustrating the effective role of language in shaping and uncovering hidden ideologies in narrative.

A Corpus Stylistic Study of Foregrounded Language Patterns in the Climate Fiction Novel The Overstory

This study investigates foregrounded language patterns of Richard Power’s climate fiction novel The Overstory through a corpus stylistic framework, employing Geoffrey Leech’s(2008) method for quantitative analysis and qualitative methodologies of Gibbons & whitely (2018)and Leech & Short (2007). The research focuses on the identification and interpretation of foregrounded linguistic patterns. These foregrounded patterns enhance climate fiction's aesthetic and rhetorical impact and serve as a narrative strategy to engage readers with ecological concerns. By bridging literary stylistics and climate discourse, this study contributes to understanding how cli-fi functions as a vehicle for environmental advocacy and climate communication. The findings suggest that foregrounding climate fiction can awaken awareness and empathy, making it a vital tool for addressing contemporary ecological and environmental challenges.

A Stylistic Study of Hyperbole, Voice, and Collocation Uses in Daily Mail and USA Today Newspapers: Climate Change as a Case

This study investigates the stylistic features of newspaper articles. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the stratified sampling method was used to collect four newspaper articles from two newspapers. Two articles from Daily Mail newspaper and two article from USA Today newspaper. It hypothesizes thatthe news language of USA Today newspaper relies on collocations, and hyperbolemore than the language of Daily Mail when reporting on Climate Change News. Moreover, the news language of Daily Mail newspaper is more reliant on the active voice than the language of USA Today Newspaper since it suits its affirmative tone when reporting on Climate Change News. The study aims to identifying the stylistic characteristics used in the news language of Daily Mail and USA Today newspapers on Climate Change, and Pointing out the stylistic similarities and differences in the news language of Daily Mail and USA Today newspapers. Both qualitative and quantitative were used for data analysis. Threemodels are adopted for the purpose of the analysis of the texts. The main findings drawn from the stylistic analysis of those two newspapers are presented at the end of the study, and they are followed by a list of references.

Personification Metaphors in Children’s Picturebooks about Nature: A Multimodal Cognitive Stylistic Study

This paper examines multimodal personification metaphors representing the natural world and human–nature relationships in three recent Caldecott award-winning picturebooks about nature – Outside In (2020), Wonder Walkers (2021), and Have You Ever Seen a Flower? (2021). It argues that verbal and pictorial metaphors collaboratively conceptualise inanimate and less perceivable entities in the natural world in terms of animate and more perceivable entities in the human world. The personifying and anthropomorphic metaphors in these picturebooks integrate the human and natural worlds and foster the development of ecological thinking and emotional connections in young readers. It concludes that multimodal personification metaphors build close human–nature connections and encourage children to explore ecological meaning by themselves.

This article provides an in-depth study of the role of ecological posters as powerful communicative tools in addressing the escalating environmental crisis in Ukraine. By examining the evolution of ecological posters, the authors highlight shifts in visual language, stylistic approaches, and conceptual frameworks that mirror sociocultural transformations and the growing demand for environmental consciousness in society. Through a detailed analysis of communicative functions–informative, mobilizing, and emotionally engaging — the study reveals the potential of ecological posters to raise awareness and influence public perception toward environmental responsibility. The purpose of the article is to provide insights into the cultural significance and communicative role of ecological posters in Ukraine. Through a focus on stylistic evolution and conceptual approaches, the article aims to inform artists, environmental activists, and cultural communicators about the potential of ecological posters to foster public engagement with environmental issues. The methodology involves a theoretical analysis of visual language changes in Ukrainian ecological posters, using comparative stylistic studies, case analysis, and review of environmental messaging techniques. This includes qualitative assessments of the informative, mobilizing, and emotional aspects of posters and their impact on public perception. The results reveal several critical findings: 1. Ukrainian ecological posters have evolved from idealized nature imagery to more realistic and emotionally evocative depictions, highlighting human impact on the environment; 2. Communicative func-tions such as raising awareness, mobilizing action, and shaping attitudes towards ecology are essential in enhancing public ecological consciousness; 3. There is a need to incorporate interactive and digital formats to better reach and engage diverse audiences, especially younger generations. The scientific novelty lies in the comprehensive analysis of ecological posters as a medium for cultural communication, particularly in Ukraine. By bridging artistic evolution with environmental messaging, the study offers a unique perspective on how visual art can contribute to public awareness and social responsibility for environmental issues. The practical significance of this article holds value for artists, cultural communicators, and environmental advocates. It provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the role of visual art in environmental communication and offers practical guidelines for creating impactful ecological posters that resonate with audiences. Recommendations include leveraging digital platforms and integrating interactive elements to increase engagement. Overall, this article presents a nuanced examination of ecological posters in Ukraine, emphasizing their potential as tools for public engagement and environmental advocacy. By analyzing both historical and contemporary approaches, the study equips readers with insights into the role of visual art in fostering ecological consciousness. This research serves as a valuable resource for artists, policymakers, and activists, enhancing understanding of ecological posters’ potential to influence public attitudes and behavior regarding environmental issues.

Backtracking Script in Agatha's Selected Crime Fiction: A Stylistic Study

Backtracking script is a mode of speech presentation, encompassing a domain of the text (sub)world where the writer manipulates receivers' (or readers') mind to handle the conceptual gaps he presumes for them, provoking a schematic structure to be recognized by readers. The present study tackles the backtracking script in Agatha's detective stories: "The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" And "The Mystery of the Spanish Chest". Agatha Christie was one of the most celebrated writers of the ‘Golden Age’ period of detective fiction in the years between the world wars. The propounded model for backtracking script is embodied in the following two hypotheses and to be applied to Agatha's two detective stories: first, backtracking script is a mode of speech presentation, mapping the lineaments of how matters are or should be; second, there are four main backtracking schemes for scripts applicable to the novellas in hand: informative, reasoning, inter-textual and inter-lexical backtracking. The data analysis validates the proposed model through applying it to the data in hand. The study comes out with conclusion that the writer in her manipulative strategies for constructing backtracking scripts accommodates receivers' information to an advanced schematic succession of events, actions and notions as a material text-world.

Metaphorical Expressions in Hausa Court Songs: A Study of Sa’idu Faru’s Waƙar Mamman Sarkin Kudu

Sa’idu Faru is one of the prominent court singers in Hausa land. He composed quite several songs and one of such is the one titled Waƙar Mamman Sarkin Kudu. This song, like many other songs, is characterized by different figures of speech. These figures of speech are normally employed to showcase one’s mastery of a language on one hand and to achieve a certain literary effect on the other. One of the prominent figures of speech is metaphor. This paper aims to extract metaphorical expressions in this song and examine the role they play in the performance of the song and in aiding to convey the message contained in the song to the audience. The version of the song used is the one in the appendix of a PhD thesis by Magaji Tsoho Yakawada (2002) and the analysis is a literary stylistic study. The analysis reveals that many metaphorical expressions are contained in the song and most of them are through a direct comparison of the person being praised (the patron) or his opponents with some animals in an attempt to reveal some special attributes of either the former or the latter as the case may be.

A Socio- Stylistic Study of the Role of Social Identity in Selected Feminist Texts

The current study explores the relationship between social identity and stylistic features in the context of contemporary feminism with reference to gender, race, and class variables. Although many studies have been conducted concerning the concept of feminist language, the relationship between social identity and linguistic features has not received enough attention, which is why the present study aims to identify the specific strategies that are used to address the goals of feminism. This research seeks to fill this gap through an analysis of twenty four contemporary Feminist texts in articles, speeches and social media posts. Employing socio-stylistic eclectic approach, the research analyses the patterns of stylistic elements in various media contexts and analyses how such elements work with the audience as well as embody different social roles. The results of the study advance the theoretical macro-socio-linguistic paradigm of socio-stylistics by identifying the link between language and social status. In addition, the study is helpful for the leaders of feminism to know how language can be utilized in a constructive manner to advance the cause of feminism.

A stylistic study of eulogic speeches on the death of Queen Elizabeth II

This is a quantitative-qualitative, descriptive study . It studies eulogic speeches on the death of Queen Elizabeth II from a stylistic perspective. The study tries to answer the following questions: what are the stylistic devices used and how are they realized ? what are the most prominent stylistic device used in the selected eulogic speeches ? In connection with the study questions, the study aims at : Revealing the stylistic devices that are utilized in the selected eulogic speeches and how they are realized linguistically. Showing the most prominent stylistic devices in the selected eulogic speeches. To achieve the aims of the study, the study follows these procedures : Reviewing the literature review stylistics, stylistic devices, and eulogy, analyzing how the stylistic devices are being employed in the selected eulogic speeches. The model of stylistic devices by Leech and short (2007) is an adapted model. On the basis of the analysis of the present study, the following conclusions are drawn: hyperbole is the most dominant stylistic device used in the selected data followed by metaphor respectively , the stylistic devices are used to create full positive picture about the Queen Elizabeth II in a way that literal meaning could never convey , the stylistic devices are realized in a systematic way to embellish and improve the texts.

A Stylistic Study of "The Windhover" by Gerard Manley Hopkins

Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) is the greatest religious poet and Jesuit priest of the Victorian age who was born in London in the rapidly changing time, fundamentals, visions and sights. He wrote many poems such as “The Windhover”, “The Wreck of the Deutschland”, “God’s Grandeur”, “Spelt from Sibyl’s Leaves”, “I Wake and feel the fell of dark, not day”, “Carrion Comfort”, “Pied Beauty”, “Felix Randal”, “Binsey Poplars” and “Thou art indeed just, Lord” but none of them was published in his life. when he decided to become a Jesuit, he burned all his literary works as he felt that they were against the principles of his Catholic religion. His friend, Robert Bridge kept a copy of his poems and published them in 1918. As a Jesuit priest, Hopkins infused his personal religious devotion into his poetry. The Windhover reflects his intense spiritual connection. For him The Windhover is “the best thing I ever wrote”. The Windhover is not the love poem which is addressed to any person, (even though “To Christ our Lord”), but to the life itself. The Windhover is the masterpiece of Hopkins style, imagery, in which he fuses the beauty of nature with the divine and religious believes. In order to reach his goal, Hopkins used figures of speech, sprung rhythm and different forms of sound patterning. This study is a stylistic analysis of The Windhover from the graphological, phonological, lexical, structural and semantic points of view. The Windhover stands out for its innovative style, vivid imagery, and seamless integration of nature and faith, a combination that distinguishes it from other religious poems. Evaluating the Effectiveness of Songs in Advertisements: A Cognitive Stylistic Study

Advertisements fulfil a significant role in social life by directing and guiding consumer actions and practices and shaping cultural norms. They not only support products and services but also reproduce and strengthen societal standards and norms. This paper explores the functionality of songs used in advertising within the field of cognitive stylistics. This field of research offers useful information into how cognitive processes and linguistic choices interact to form the interpretation and influence of discourses. The research questions are: (1) How do cognitive stylistic features enhance the influence of songs on advertising? (2) How do cognitive stylistic features shape customers' attitudes and behaviours? To examine the research questions, this paper uses a qualitative analysis method. The data is made up of a song used in advertisements, which will be investigated to detect cognitive stylistic elements and their influence on consumer viewpoints and behaviors. We hypothesize, through applying the mixed cognitive stylistics model, that the manifestation of cognitive stylistic aspects in songs enriches their functionality in grasping and captivating the intended audience. The findings have themes for advertisers, offering perspectives on how to successfully interact with their target audience through songs and how to evaluate the effectiveness of their advertising efforts.

KAJIAN STILISTIKA BERORIENTASI DIKSI YANG BERINDIKASI NILAI PENDIDIKAN KARAKTER PROFIL PELAJAR PANCASILA PADA KUMPULAN PUISI BULAN TERTUSUK LALANG KARYA D. ZAWAWI IMRON SEBAGAI ALTERNATIF BAHAN AJAR DI SMK

This research aims to describe how D. Zawawi Imron manipulates or utilizes diction that indicates the character education value of the Pancasila Student Profile as well as the effects caused by the use of this diction in the collection of poems Bulan Tertusuk Lalang and used as an alternative for Indonesian teaching material in vocational schools. This research applies a qualitative descriptive method using a stylistic approach. This research uses data from the poetry collection Bulan Tertusuk Lalang by D. Zawawi Imron and Indonesian language teaching materials at vocational schools. Data collection was carried out using library study techniques. The results of this research are, D. Zawawi Imron manipulates or utilizes language in ways, namely: (1) using words that contain denotational and connotative meanings through expressions (2) using word data with the Pancasila Student Profile as an indirect way of expressing reality. The effect of D. Zawawi Imron's use of diction in the collection of poems Bulan Tertusuk Lalang is that readers can find out the meaning and message of the collection of the poems as well as provide characteristics of the language used by D. Zawawi Imron. As an alternative Indonesian language teaching material in vocational schools because it meets the requirements and criteria for good teaching material or materials. Interestingly, apart from the meaning of connotation and denotation, in these poems we also find archaic diction (ancient words that are no longer commonly used).One of the functions of this archaic diction is as a means of generating visual images for readers and the value of character education with the Pancasila Student Profile. Apart from that, you can also find understanding related to the holy book Al-Quran, stories of the prophet, history of the Majapahit kingdom, and philosophical theories. The results of data analysis also show that this stylistic study can be used as teaching material for Indonesian language and literature in module form.
