Effects of Store Music on Shopping Behavior

Describes an experiment conducted comparing the effects of background and foreground music on clothing store shoppers. Concludes that choosing to play store music solely to satisfy customers′ preferences may not be the optimal approach; instead music should be varied across areas of a store that appeal to different‐aged customers.

Change of Sub-Central Shopping Street after the Opening a Big Shopping Store

The purpose of this paper is to examine the changes in Shinbashi-Odori shopping street, a sub-central shopping street in the City of Kushiro since a big store has opened. The results are summarized as follows:1. In Shinbashi-Odori shopping street, after the big store opened, the percentage of convenience goods stores have decreased and the percentage of shopping goods stores, eating and drinking shops and personal services have increased. In this process, the independent retailers have declined rapidly and conversely the multiple retailers, that is an organization with two or more outlets and contractual chain stores, have increased.2. Shinbashi-Odori shopping street has increased its purchasing rates after the big store opened. However, nearly 80% of the shoppers visiting Shinbashi-Odori shopping street shopped at only the big store. In Shinbashi-Odori shopping street, the purpose of most visitors was onestop shopping to use the big store.

A framework for studying teleshopping versus store shopping

Transportation and geography studies of shopping behavior focus on destinatiion choice assuming a trip had to be made. New telecommunications technologies enable home-based “teleshopping” to substitute for store shopping. This paper develops a framework for studying the choice between modes of shopping. Shopping activity is defined as information acquisition that precedes purchasing. But, shopping seems to fulfill some psychological and recreational functions in addition to obtaining information. An integration of perspectives from different disciplines results in a conceptual structure which forms a basis for empirical studies of the impact of telecommunications technologies of human travel and activity patterns.

The demand for teleshopping: An application of discrete choice models

New telecommunications technologies have often been suggested to act as substitutes for travel. Teleshopping may be a substitute for traditional store shopping. This paper studies the determination of the demand for teleshopping. In general, the demand for telecommunications is derived from the demand for information. So we look at teleshopping as a form of information gathering. Agents can engage in various shopping activities, including teleshopping, which entail different time and monetary costs. Through a discrete choice model, we analyze the effect of costs on the choice of shopping activities. The model is estimated based on a pilot experiment in which individuals had to choose among information bundles when shopping for differentiated products. Implicit in the choice set were information items which can only be transmitted by specific media. Limitations of this preliminary work and suggestions for future research are discussed.

This paper presents the results of a study which examines the overall amount and types of risk consumers perceive when purchasing the same products by direct mail as compared to retail stores. The effect of prior catalog shopping experience on perceived risk is also examined. The results indicate that despite the gains achieved by the direct mail industry, consumers continue to perceive this shopping mode as being significantly more risky. Differences were also found with respect to the individual types of risk perceived. A significant relationship between perceived risk and the satisfaction/dissatisfaction derived from prior catalog purchase experience was also identified.

Consumer Acceptance of Vacuum Packaged Ground Beef as Influenced by Product Color and Educational Materials

ABSTRACTQuestionnaires were completed by 1750 grocery store shoppers to determine the effect of product color and educational materials on purchase intent for vacuum packaged (VP) ground beef. Consumers (74%) indicated that color was important in their product purchase intent decision. Half the consumers received product information (informed). Informed consumers were more likely (P<0.0001) to indicate a positive purchase intent for VP ground beef than uninformed consumers. Informed consumers were as likely to purchase the purplered VP product as the bright cherry red product they are accustomed to purchasing. It appears possible to effectively educate the consumer to accept the purple‐red color of VP ground beef.

Discovering and Correcting Problems in a Naval Stock Control System

An analysis aimed at evaluating the shop stores control system formulae at the Naval Ordnance Station in Louisville revealed inherent operational problems. Simple analysis procedures led to the discovery and evaluation of these problems. These procedures also aided in explaining the problems and suggesting corrective measures to management.

Effective information‐searching strategies without “perfect” indexing

AbstractComputer searching of an information file offers significant advantages over manual searching when it can utilize strategies that are impractical for a human searcher to use. This paper examines several existing strategies, and then suggests that increased emphasis be placed on one that is relatively tolerant of “imperfect” indexing. Since “perfect” indexing does not exist, such a strategy would have considerable value. The general procedure consists of counting the number of search‐matched index terms and then calculating a relevance factor for each item found, thus enabling the final search‐output listing to be prepared in order of probable relevance. This technique is essentially the same as the strategy used successfully in such diverse tasks as identifying criminal suspects by their modus operandi, selecting suitable gifts for department store shoppers, and locating misspelled names in an airlines reservation file.

Marketing in Finland

Many readers will be surprised to learn of the timely marketing practices and institutions which characterize the small nation of Finland. Its “Americana” marketing appearance, exemplified by planned shopping centers, television advertising, and self-service stores seems incongruous with a common border with the Soviet Union. Speech Differences along the Ontario-United States Border

Not long ago a Torontonian shopping in a large department store just across the border asked where he could find chesterfields. On following directions, he was somewhat dismayed to find himself at the cigar counter!Such experiences often occur in life along the border, as any Ontarioan who has tried to buy blinds or serviettes in New York or Michigan will know. When he has been across the line for some time, however, he discovers that most of his neighbours pull down their shades before retiring and tuck in their table napkins before eating spaghetti Italian style. The visitor from Ontario who stays with American friends just south of the line learns that they turn on faucets at the kitchen sink rather than taps and hold up their pants with suspenders, not braces (trousers is “elegant diction” for most men in both countries.)
