Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric Determination of Aluminum in Pharmaceuticals

Abstract A simple, sensitive, and rapid atomic absorption spectrophotometric method for aluminum in pharmaceutical preparations is described. No interference from other ingredients has been experienced in utilizing this technique. The reproducibility of the method has been reported for a lotion containing lipid base. The results of the determination of aluminum in 3 different commercial products are presented. This method, because of its simplicity and sensitivity, provides a distinct advantage over methods previously reported in the literature.

Spectrophotometric Determination of Aluminum(III) by the Solvent Extraction

The extraction of aluminum(III)-Alizarin Red S(ARS)chelate with methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) in the presence of 1, 3-dibhenylguanidinium(DPG) salt has been investigated spectro-photometrically. The extracted species has an absorption maximum at abeut 525 nm, with a constant abserbance in the pH range from 5.5 to 5.9. For the absorbance of the association complex under the optimum conditions of pH, reagent concentrations and shaking time, Beer's gaw is obeyed up to 1.5 105 mo/1 aluminum in aqueous phase. The molar absorptivity is 2.90 104l/mol cm at 525 nm. lt is found that the 1:2 aluminum-ARS chelate anion formS ion association complex of 1:2 molar ratio with DPG cation, and the complex is extracted from aqueous phase into organic phase.

A spectrophotometric method is described for the microdetermination of aluminum in acidic medium (pH 5.0) with the title compound. Spectrophotometric studies show the formation of 1:1 (ligand:A1) water-soluble complex and the reaction is suitable for photometric determination of 0.5–3.5 ppm of aluminum. Beryllium does not react with this reagent and aluminum can be determined in the presence of 100-fold quantity of beryllium. The molar absorptivity of the complex at 375 mμ is ε ~ 12,700 and the apparent formation constant at pH 5.0 is of the order of 10 6. The interference due to a number of ions has been studied.

Spectrophotometric determination of aluminium in soil extracts with xylenol orange

A spectrophotometric method for determining aluminium in soil extracts with xylenol orange at pH 3·8 is described. Various extraction reagents can be used. Interference of iron(III) and iron(II) is eliminated with EDTA. Rectilinear calibration covers a range of 0 to 60 µg of aluminium. Typical results are shown for an iron-humus podzol. Recovery of added aluminium and levels of interference of anions and cations relevant to soil analysis are shown. The practicability of the method in contrast with “lake” methods is emphasised.

A comprehensive investigation of the spcctrophotometric determination of aluminium with chrome azurol S is described. No heating is required for colour formation, and the method is considerably more reproducible and selective than either the eriochrome cyanine R or aluminon methods. In the presence of suitable masking agents, only Be 2+, Zr 4+, and F-cause serious interference. A molar absorptivity of 21,500 at 567.5 mμ was found for the aluminium-chrome azurol S lake, with a relative standard deviation of ± 0.4% at the 20 μg Al level. Beer's law is obeyed from 0 to 1.2 mg Al/ml.

Abstract Methods have been developed for the determination of aluminum with ammonium aurintricarboxylate (Aluminon); iron with 2,4,6-tripyridyl-s-triazine (TPTZ); manganese by oxidation to permanganate with KI04; phosphorus by a heteropoly blue method; and titanium with disodium-1,2-dihydroxybenzene-3,5-disulfonate (Tiron), Detertested are carried out on the filtrate obtained in the AOAC perchloric acid method for silicon. Adequacy of the directions was established by “ruggedness tests,” and the procedures were used to analyze carbonate and silicate liming materials. It is recommended that the methods be studied collaboratively.

Abstract Aluminum reacts with xylenol orange in a slightly acidic solution to form two red complexes which are in equilibrium with each other. At pH 3.4±0.1, Beer’s law is obeyed up to an aluminum concentration of 1.0 p.p.m. in 1 cm. absorption cells. The absorbance was measured at the isosbestic point of 536 mμ. The molar extinction coefficient was found to be 21100. This method seems to be the most favorable one for aluminum determination if the aluminum is first separated from any interfering ions. The composition of the complexes has also been discussed.

キシリジルブルーII(XB-II)を用いて,金属テルル中のマグネシウムを定量する方法について検討した.従来,XB-II法ではすべてホウ砂緩衝液を用いてpH9.0で定量されているが,XB-II自身がpHおよびエタノール量によって吸収スペクトルが異なり,Mg-XB-IIの510mμでの吸光度もpH 9.0以上になるにつれて大きくなる.また,pH 9.0付近はMg-XB-IIの組成の変異点にもあたる.本法ではpH 10.2として定量した.主成分のテルルは,硝酸酸性のpH 4.5で二酸化テルルとして分離し,妨害イオンはシアン化カリウムおよびトリエタノールアミンによっていんぺいした.本法は精度として特によいとはいえないが,実際試料に応用して10%以内の再現性で満足すべき結果が得られた.

A procedure for the determination of aluminium in steel is described. Aluminium is separated from iron and interfering elements by ion exchange in concentrated hydrochloric acid solution, and finally determined spectrophotometrically with stilbazo.

The use of stilbazo as a spectrophotometric reagent for aluminium has been investigated. The reagent forms a stable coloured complex with aluminium showing an absorption maximum at 500 mμ. The system obeys Beer's law from 0.1–0.8 p.p.m. aluminium. The molar extinction coefficient and the stoichiometric composition of the coloured complex have been determined.

Spectrophotometric determination of aluminum and iron in calcium

A simple, rapid, and accurate method is described whereby micro amounts of aluminum and iron can be determined in calcium metal. The iron is determined spectrophotometrically by measuring the absorbency of the reddish-orange color of the tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II)ion, [(C 12H 8N 2) 3Fe] ++. This complex effectively removes the iron interference, and the aluminum is determined spectrophotometrically in the solution remaining from the iron determination by extracting it with a chloroform solution of 8-quinolinol and measuring the absorbency of the yellow color of the tris(8-quinolinolo)aluminum(III) in the chloroform solution.
